This relatively new place serves pretty standard American food: sandwiches, fries, meats. It's basically a less healthy version of Pluto's. I love this place. The food is spectacular each time I go. It's a little more expensive than other good places but the quality is there. For a decent price, you can get huge a custom salad with your choice of meat. They have a large selection of fresh toppings and dressings. The steak salad with balsamic vinaigrette is my favorite. It leaves me full without being heavy. All the sandwiches I've tried from the Bbq chicken to the tri-tip have been delicious. They are on a spicy bun. The pepper and pickle is a nice addition too. To be fair, I've only had their salads and urban fries (GET THE FRIES), but it has always been delicious! Their salad is always fresh, and I love the choice of toppings. This place is not good for several reasons. The main reason being the quality and price of the food, which is too much money for very little food that is not very good. The tri-tip is OK, you'll find better for the same price at Plutos. The salad I had once (buffalo blue cheese something or other with chicken) was overdressed, soggy, and a gross combination of flavors (owed to the addition of apple, which I normally love in salads). The potentially only redeeming sandwich is the blackened cajun chicken, which has never been dry the two times I ordered it (thankfully). The real kicker however is the service--one girl in particular. I have dealt with her both behind the register and serving my food and have equally disliked both interactions. She is rude, snotty, and could care less about her job or the people she is serving. I hate to be such a critical person, but as someone who is also in the business of customer service, her performance at work (in front of paying customers no less!) is truly astounding. She has also been terrible with other friends of mine who have gone on separate occasions from my own! This is a shame, since many of the other workers are genuinely nice and helpful. Definitely made of few people I know (including myself) not take their business there again. I've been here a handful of times now and won't be going back anytime soon. Pluto's ugly cousin. I'm sorry Jack's, but you're just not as good! Living in North Davis, and a fanatic fan of Pluto's I really really want to like Jack's, but I just can't. They don't make good sandwiches or salads, no matter what I try to add to it to spice it up. Their ONE saving grace are their garlic fries, some of the best I've ever had. They even rival the famed AT&T Park's garlic fries! Fries are the thin/crispy/oily variety - kind of like a McDonald's, which is a good thing in my book. They make sure to add loads of garlic to make your breathe tastes bad the rest of the night. The last time I went, I had a terrible experience though. I tried calling ahead, but after 2 attempts, no one answered. I walk over, and there's a gigantic line (should've expected this at dinner time on a weekend). I wait in like for like 15 minutes to order, just to get the fries immediately - kind of annoying. When I get home, I realize they didn't mix the garlic at all, and there's just a box of fries with a fat lump of garlic/butter/herb mix on top. I try my best to mix it all in the box (a la shake and bake!) but fail miserably. Wish they put in more effort on quality even when things get busy. read more

Let me be Frank and you can be whoever you want to be, but the reviews I read prior to going to Jack's made me a bit cautious about going here. I left my high expectations at home before finding my way to this restaurant, but would later find myself in for quite a surprise. The place has a nice modern looking interior and they also offer outside seating. I came here with a friend and she brought her dog so outside seating it was, for me. Ordering was simple you pick an item off the menu and you get to see it made it in front of you, like Subway. I looked at the menu and ordered the Sonoma Steak Sandwich which is a chargrilled tri-tip sandwich with crumbled blue cheese, sauteed mushrooms, grilled red onion and spring mix on a ciabatta roll. They had me at blue cheese, which mind you, is my favorite type of cheese. The tri tip was great and cooked just right, not dry, like others have experienced. The bread was a little chewy, but not to the point where it became a problem. They put just enough blue cheese so it didn't overpower the sandwich, though my breath smelled like sweaty gym socks after. They put just enough spring mix for me to enjoy it, as i prefer my steak sandwich to be composed mostly of steak, call me old fashioned.. The sauteed onions and grilled red onions were also a nice touch. Overall, very good the sandwich was $8.25 before tax. My damage wasn't done yet however. I also ordered the Urban Fries which has spicy chili oil, chili flakes and of course blue cheese. It was an interesting (the good kind of interesting) combination of ingredients and you could taste each of them, without one masking the other. I decided to order the family size because my friend egged me on and said I wouldn't be able to finish it, needless to say i won that bet, although by the end of the meal I didn't feel like such a winner. I'm giving this place a rating of three simply because of the great service we received when we placed our order. Our server was very polite, quick with a clean work area. The dining room was fairly clean, there must have been a lunch rush. We ordered two salads, Romaine with Caesar and extra items. The lettuce was bitter, obviously past its prime and we mentioned it to one of the staff busing the dining room, to which they responded that they would let the management know. We waited, and didn't see the manager. Lastly I told the lady who made our salad as well, and she said she would check the lettuce and let the manager know. At this point we had to leave, and never saw the manager. I'm sad to say this location does not measure up to the Jacks in Sacramento, which has very attentive staff who would most likely have replaced our salads. read more

I have been to this location several times before. The service was okay then. But my latest visit was not an enjoyable one. The service was mediocre. The food itself did not taste as good as the other times I have gone. It's going downhill. My sandwich had very chewy bread even though it was toasted. I am pretty sure they gave me stale bread. Even my cousin commented on it when she tried it and when I tried her sandwich, the bread was a lot more fresh. Toasty on the outside and soft on the inside. The meat and fillings of the sandwich was very disappointing. I go here mainly for the sandwiches. Less dry than the sandwiches I've had at Plutos and never disappointing. My personal favorites are the Sonoma Steak Sandwich, California Cheese Steak and the BBQ Tri-Tip. Okay, that's pretty much anything with steak on the menu. The fries are pretty good too. They are classic fries, not the curly kind. If you get regular fries with your sandwich you get a deal. If you upgrade to garlic or anything else you may as well order them as a side. Kind of lame since the garlic can't cost them much, but I like the regular fries best anyway. Although the garlic fries are generously smothered in garlic goodness. I'm always tempted to order a family sized portion for myself and then I end up stuffed and with leftovers. A side of fries is plenty with a sandwich. They also have Urban Fries, which are smothered in melted blue cheese, chili oil and chili flakes. I thought it would be crumbled blue cheese so I gave them a go but the fries arrived hidden under a mass of what looked like a sea of mayo. The first few were good but frankly it was overkill. If you're sensitive to grease, don't torture yourself. I wouldn't order them again myself. They didn't destroy my stomach like they did my boyfriend's but they were just too heavy. read more

I LOVE this place! Their Urban fries are so good, and have a spicy sauce with blue cheese on top. Their mac n cheese is really good, as well as their Chinese chicken salad and their turkey club sandwich. I have tried many things on the menu, and while it is delicious, it is quite unhealthy. I'm sure the sandwiches are well over 500 calories. So I usually only come here occasionally, or when I want some good comfort food. This place is also quite expensive for a lunch place. However, if the food was bad, I wouldn't give it a second thought. Yet I love the food and think it's delicious, so it's worth the money! They also don't take Discover which bummed me out, but it's no big deal. The employees are always super friendly and helpful, I always feel welcome. I also like how big and spacious the place is. A tritip bbq sandwich, a customized salad, and a side of urban fries is the default order. It's a little pricey for what it is, but the quality of their meat is presentable and their food is great. Not to mention, their location is by the freeway, in a shopping center, with lots of parking. The inside is fairly clean and the employees were nice. Overall experience was good. If you're from the San Jose area, you would know the best place for sandwiches would be Ike's Lair. Having just moved to Sacramento, I didn't really know where good sandwich spots were, so I just settled for Subway & Togo's. It wasn't until today that a friend of mine decided that we should eat at Jack's. He had been wanting to go for a while, and since we were both in the mood for sandwiches, I decided why not. To be honest, I was a little skeptical of the restaurant. Being an Ike's lover for years, I was used to their 15+ variety of sandwiches. When I saw Jack's menu, I was kind of put a back since there was less than 10 choices. I decided on getting the Cajun Chicken sandwich, my friend got the BBQ Tri Tip sandwich, and we also split an order of garlic fries. Initially, when I got my order, I wasn't too impressed. The serving was really small! However, when I took a bite of the sandwich...ermahgosh. It was so good. The chicken was extremely tender, and the mango salsa & chipotle mayo complimented each other so well. And despite the small size of the sandwich, I couldn't finish it! And the garlic fries? OMG. It was BOMB-DIGGITY. Rivals the garlic fries I'm used to getting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival! I'd say this place deserves a rave review. Good food at a fairly good price. This place is very similar to Pluto's in downtown Davis. I had the build your own salad and they offer some things that Pluto's doesn't have such as kale, quinoa, and artichokes. The base of my salad was with kale but they didn't cut up the kale so it was really difficult to eat. I had it with a balsamic vinaigrette but it was very acidic and they put a lot in my salad so in the end it was difficult to finish and my tongue was in pain. You can only add in 6 items for the salad while at Pluto's you can do 7. They put really little in my salad because I could barely find the items I asked for when I was eating the salad. This place is nice with pretty interiors and lots of food options. The restaurant style is very similar to Plutos from the way you order to the different types of food they offer, and because of that, I would probably choose Pluto's over this. read more

Came back to Jack's on Sunday and just was not impressed. The service was terrible, the person that took my order and the cashier were rude and clearly did not want to be there. I had the Spicy Buffalo salad and it was just bad. The romaine lettuce was primarily the crunchy ribs with very little leaf. The blue cheese dressing was wayyy watered down, I am guessing the lettuce was wet. The toppings were good and generous compared to the tiny amount of lettuce, but there were only two tiny! pieces of chicken, seriously the length of my index finger and twice as wide. Ridiculous for a ten dollar salad. Also shared the urban fries and they were really lacking on toppings and the fries were room temperature. I might go back to Jack's in Sac or Roseville but definitely not returning to this location. read more

The mashed potatoes are pretty tasty as well. When I come here, I always order a build-your-own salad. There's a bunch of items to choose from but you are only allowed to choose 6, which is fewer than Pluto's. - THE PRICES Jack's is definitely NOT cheap. If you want to add meat to a salad, it's $3-4 more, which makes a salad around $12-13, a bit on the expensive side. I finally got around to trying Jack's today after living 5 min away from it for two years, hah. It has a sizable lunch hour crowd; I got there right when it opened and there was already a line. Ordering process seemed strangely inefficient so it was a bit of a wait, but not bad. I got the tri-tip plate with mac and cheese instead of mashed potatoes. The mac and cheese was impressive! It tasted fresh instead of "just a side dish" and it wasn't overwhelmingly creamy, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the tri-tip fell flat. I don't eat BBQ on a regular basis but I've eaten enough to know it just wasn't good. It was tough/chewy and difficult to cut with a knife. There was almost no flavor, although their BBQ sauce helps with that. Overall with a fountain drink my total came out to around $17.50 (!) My experience wasn't terrible, thanks to the mac and cheese and the nice atmosphere overall. But I wish I didn't pay $17 just for mac and cheese, very subpar tri-tip, and a nice place to sit. And the food is just a go down the line place so it's just sitting under heat lamps all day and isn't very fresh. I brought 9 of my friends here to celebrate a few birthdays. I was nervous at first since they do not accept reservations. However, after speaking with the assistant manager, they were more than happy to let me come in 30 minutes before my event and set up a couple tables for dinner. They even stored my birthday cake in the frig and provided plates. The food is amazing and service was awesome. This results in long lines. First the good - garlic fries, sandwiches, and mashed potatoes. The bad - Salmon was overdone and dry. The mac and cheese was lukewarm and broccoli cheddar was cold. I had such a bad experience at this place. I heard that it's rating was average but I still wanted to give it a go. In the beginning the worker who took my order seem nice and I asked her what she would recommend, of course she said everything is good. I decided to try the Reuben but I'm not a huge fan of sauerkraut so I asked her if she could exclude that. She stared at me funny cause Reuben's usually have sauerkraut I'm guessing. But she said that's fine. After the 15 to 20 minute wait, they came out with my order . The food looked like a simple straight forward sandwich but I took a bite and it was straight sauerkraut , I opened the sandwich and the amount of sauerkraut that was in there overpowered the whole sandwich. I'm not a customer who likes to bother their server with little things but the sauerkraut was just too much after my first bite. I reached out for a waitress and she seemed busy so I waited. Once she came over I told her that I ordered this meal without sauerkraut , she gave me a confused and this really awkward answer like "Oh, well it comes with the sandwich." Even after I told her I ordered it without sauerkraut. Then it became an awkward minute of her looking like she doesn't know what to do. So I say never mind it's fine, I'll just take it out myself. I love Bacon. I love BLTs and Cobb Salads and Club Sandwiches. Jacks doesn't have a cobb salad to order but you can sure make one. And that's what I did. I created a half size salad (starts at $6.95) with 1/2 mixed greens and 1/2 romaine, chicken (add $2), hard boiled egg, tomatoes, cucumbers, bleu cheese, croutons, onions (you get to pick 6 toppings) and add that bacon! Sure it' s 75cents extra but ...c'mon it's bacon! Drizzled with Balsamic Vinaigrette and "muah!" a delicious salad. My husband and I ordered a little bowl of Mac and Cheese to share and dined outdoors. I've previously been to Jacks in Sac and they made the bacon but made sure to tell me not to order bacon anymore for my salads. Glad the Davis Jacks made a better effort to accompany me. We decided to stop in because we wanted to try something new, and left pretty disappointed. I opted for the California Cheesesteak and fries. I had an overwhelming amount of fat instead of meat and whatever went on the sandwich masked any flavor that the meat might have had. The one piece of meat I found that wasn't a chunk of fat was actually pretty decent OUT of the sandwich. It's become sort of a tradition for me to come here after hiking Stebbins Cold Canyon Loop (5 miles) at Lake Berryessa. Food tastes good and fresh, staff is friendly, and service is fast. The lettuce was green, but I think had a healthy sprinkling of some kind of preservatives. No flavor. Too much dressing. My companions had sandwiches--lots of bread, didn't look very good. Freezing cold inside (you might think this is a good thing in the summer). The chili was inedible. My stomach was upset after dinner, which is rare. Great salads and would have given a 4* review but they got rid of the bike rack outside. Apparently if you want to eat healthy you gotta drive there. Besides the counter person being seemly confused by a simple order, a paid for order of sweet potato fries was not put into the bag with my other items. The phone voicemail box at this site is full so I cannot ask for this to be addressed without driving back to the site, which I should not have to do. And placing a phone order is not possible. Sent an email to the site requesting a resolution. There has been no response to my email. Poor service. Don't recommend. read more
