Seriously great food, I couldn't resist and got jerk chicken, fried chicken, curry chicken, collards, sweet potato, black-eyed peas and plantains. Best by far was the jerk chicken. I also loved the sweet potato, although it is very sweet! I thought it was a good contrast to the spiciness. Every type of chicken was really well prepared, falling off the bone and juicy. The jerk chicken stood out for great complexity and spice. If I go back I would focus on this one. And I will probably go back. The meal I described was too much for me to eat in one sitting, and cost about 12$, if I had just got one or two peices of chicken and slightly more moderate portions of everything else I would have had a generous meal for around 6-7 dollars. Yum. They also have a nice salad bar but it's hard to say no to all the hot buffet options which are beautiful and smell amazing. I went after 8 pm and the food was ok. The door was open so I felt like it made it difficult to keep the food warm. The BBQ wings were good. My husband enjoyed the yams but his chicken was dry and so was his red velvet cake that he didn't even finish. I also had a plate of green beans that tasted gritty and the cabbage and mac&cheese had to much butter. The fruit and salad bar looked pretty tasty. Love this place. It's right around the corner but I would travel for it and that's impressive because I'm sure the meat is delicious but I'm a pescetarian and there are plenty of options for me. Okra, baked salmon, spicy pickles, homemade mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, carrot cake. All so on point and so cheap ($5 something a lb)- you can get a literal feast for under $10. They also have seating until 9:15 pm and are open until 10, sometimes live music. Not sure what else to add except- highly recommend! Don't forget your hot sauce! read more

I've been to both locations and LOVE them both equally. This one has more dining space and larger tables. The guys behind the register are very friendly and welcoming. I visit this location maybe once or twice a month. This place has saved me from many hungry nights. The nights I would come back from a long day at school and work craving something close to homemade food, I would stop at Jacobs for a meal. They have a lot of options there to fill your carton so I find it hard to believe that someone would walk in there and not find at least one thing appetizing . I usually go for the yellow rice and the oxtails (they rock!) , along with the cold macaroni and tuna salad and a little corner of fruit. Delicious! Not a lot of things to say about this place except for its simple and no frills but the food is amazing. Its a buffet place. You walk in and grab your styrofoam box and then you walk up and down the two stations of food. One is all entrees and the other is mostly salad, fruits and desserts. The food is paid for by weight. I dont remember it being terribly pricey. Its great for dinner or lunch or whenever. Great simple and well done american and caribbean style food. A must do when you are in the area. read more

I've loved everything I've tried here and I've tried a lot. Ready?: Red velvet cake and coconut layer cake slices are huge and only $3. Amazingly fluffy and moist. Really better than any other red velvet/coconut layer cake I've ever had. I would like to marry the baker. :) Barbecue chicken, hot wings, cabbage, sweet potatoes, Jamaican rice and beans, plantains - all perfectly done and delicious. After one bite of the jerk chicken, I knew I would be spoiled for life. This is what it is supposed to taste like! I can never go back to inauthentic jerk chicken. The spices had depth. The short ribs were sooo tender and really flavorful. The oxtail is on my list of things to try. This is amazing soul food and Jamaican food. The cashiers are friendly. Prices are fair. I've only taken things to go. This is one of the highlights of the area. I will probably happily gain 10 pounds this year frequenting this place. read more

I had a church meeting the other night i ordered the crispy fried chicken, I got to the church the chicken looked burnt as if the oil was not changed during the frying, the chicken was not crispy but rubbery, as if it was cook early and left in the oven. I went into this store on a rainy Monday night, granted it was almost closing time. But that is NO excuse for why ALL of their food down to the salad section look days old, the customer service was as bad as the food looked. The workers does not greet you when you first walk in, they just stare as if there's something on your face. I walked out after taking a walk around to see if there was anything in there even worth tasting and I found NOTHING. The store is very small, no elbow room if there was a lunch rush you would be bumping into other customers. The way the food looked also explains why I was the only customer in there. I was so hungry but I rather eat food from a food truck outside then eat that crap, which is exactly what I did. I can honestly say I will never go back in there. That was my first and last time. This location doesn't deserve one star. I will most likely visit other locations but this exact location I will continue to walk by. I was very disappointed. read more

I have lived 3 stops away from this GEM for 4 years and I only just discovered it and that saddens me. The food is phenomenal, the staff is friendly and helpful. As an African American woman I rarely eat soul food outside of the home simply because I can make it myself. It's a strange world out there. You can move to Harlem, visit buffet after buffet in search of the motherload, discover it at Jacob Restaurant on Frederick Douglas (8th Ave) and 141st St and fall madly in love with their perfectly cooked collard greens, their juicy chicken, the mouth-watering ribs, the savory okra and go back whenever you can to try something new. But when a friend comes to town, a self-proclaimed soul food expect (whereas I am a mere enthusiast), you just may, as I did, talk Jacob's up to the heavens of soul food but find yourselves while out shopping one day, closer to the Jacob's on Lenox and 131st. And that joint turns out to be so bad that you lose all culinary credibility with the said friend/soul food expert. Until you beg said expert to give the Jacob's you were originally referring to a chance, the one on 8th Ave & 141st St. And you would once again gain the respect of your foodie friend. Because the Frederick Douglas Blvd Jacob's boasts some of the best food I've had not in the neighborhood but in the city at large. Yeah, I'll go there. It's delicious. But upon signing onto Yelp this morning to make this distinction I've discovered that the stars for the Lenox Ave Jacob's outweigh the stars awarded by Yelpers to my beloved 8th Ave Jacob's . So consider my weight, all 5 stars if it, thrown behind this Jacob's. It's a delight to live so close to them. read more

If you come at the right time (we showed up at 11am) everything has JUST come out of the kitchen and is as fresh as it will get. Don't get too much rice or things with bones cause you pay by weight. I have been going to Jacobs for about 3 years now. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE their food. I go thier on a REGULAR BASIS. If you are VEGITARIAN......GO THERE.....If you like SOUL FOOD....GO THERE...if you like A VERY NICE ATMOSPHERE AND FRIENDLY FOLKS.....GO THERE! I can't say more people....I NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS PLACE! 2 train to 125 and walk a few blocks...they have the absolutely HOTTEST JERK CHICKEN you would ever wanna try and all sorts of other yummy surprises. Awesome all around. The owner helps the community and often donates to the poor. The food is exceptionally tasty. The place is a bit small and the prices are slightly high, but it's worth the investment knowing that the owner gives so much food and money back to the community. I encourage my business colleagues and friends/family to buy food there. I hope he's able to expand into larger facility, and gets some better prices on his wholesale purchases. I also hope his community-friendly business model spreads to some of the nearby snob-filled spots that have moved into Harlem. read more
