The food is so good here the service is very fast and the ambience is great and the chefs and waiters and waitresses are very nice

Very disappointed....... We've been coming to Ruby of Siam in Highland Park for years and always love it, but today was really disappointing. The place was almost empty during peak lunch hours, kind of surprising. Then, out of nowhere, the server tells us we can't take home leftovers from the lunch specials. Saying that it's four boxes each to take when we literally had one box each. No explanation, just a flat-out "no." We even offered to pay for the to-go boxes, but they still wouldn't let us. It just didn't make sense, especially since we've eaten here so many times, ordered from both the lunch and regular menu, and never had a problem before. It's not like we only come for the specials! We've always talked highly about this place, but this experience just left a bad taste. Not sure if this is a new rule or just something the server decided on, but it felt really unwelcoming. It's sad to see a place we've supported for so long make us feel this way. read more

Very nice dinning experience. Cozy and nicely decorated. Had the lunch special, pad thai, tum yum soup and a veggie spring roll, all very good! My date had curry chicken with rice which I got a taste off and it was excellent. Service was prompt and friendly. Bill was very reasonable. Will go back again! read more

I've been going here for years. One of my favorite dishes is the papaya salad with tomatoes and peanuts. I didn't recognize the person at the front desk when I walked in, maybe this place is under new ownership? Anyway the salad was awful. Dressing tasted very water down. I counted four peanuts total. And the price was $14. Take a look at the photo, I did take two bites but you can see how small it is. Was great to have a good Thai restaurant down the road. So I called them and was very friendly. I know mistakes happen. All I asked for was a gift certificate for the cost of the salad and I'd be happy to try it again. They said they would call the manager and call me back. Well it's two days later and I have not heard back. So bad food and bad customer service equals one star. I'll be going to a different Thai place from now on, sadly. read more

I can only speak for DoorDash orders since we haven't dined in yet, but we've ordered from Ruby of Siam multiple times and have never been disappointed. The portions are always generous, and we especially love the Pad Thai, Red Curry, and Lime Chicken. Our kids are huge fans of the Fried Rice! I also love that you can adjust the spice level on all the entrees--perfect for picky eaters. The menu is really extensive, so there's something for everyone. The only downside is that extra protein options like shrimp are a bit pricey ($5 extra), but the basics like beef, chicken, veggies, and tofu are included. I think they're pretty consistent regarding the food itself. But a major concern for them is the service. I've eaten here in person and ordered takeout. I can't recall any instances where the food didn't meet or exceed my expectations! I'll get the grumbling out of the way first. Its service is interminably slow when it gets busy. This might be true for anywhere, to an extent, but it's especially notable here. We went here on a Sunday night with two young kids - they were actually patient and enjoying the night, so that was great. But we were shocked by how slow it was. It took almost 20 minutes for someone to even take our order. Other tables that got seated before us got their order taken. The food came out in waves, which is fine, but the entrees took awhile. Multiple people at our table were frustrated by how long everything took, even though we wanted to be as fair as possible and definitely communicated our gratitude to our server throughout. I think there was one server for the whole restaurant! We would try to make eye contact with someone who worked there, anyone, and people would just walk by without acknowledging most of the tables or all of them - that is, when someone appeared in the dining area at all. You could also notice, quite easily, how slow the service was due to the massive amount of people waiting for takeout orders. People were staying there for 15-30 minutes, and that's after some sort of indication that their food was ready. All of this is to say that, if you go there or order aside from a Sunday night or perhaps Saturday, the concerns from the above paragraphs don't get in the way of things too much. This is because the food is consistently great! It is kid-friendly, too, and the variety ensures that many different people can enjoy the menu. I love the tom yum soup. This time, I got it medium spicy, and it was more mild, so I hope they messed up instead of the spice levels being altered! Despite this, it was still so delicious, bursting with lemongrass flavor. I'm a big fan of Ruby of Siam and everything was on point tonight. The Tom Yum soup was hot and slightly spicy, filled with mushrooms, cilantro and chicken. I was feeling a little under the weather this evening and this was exactly what I needed. The sampler plate with lime chicken, Ruby crab legs and potstickers were a little of everything, and it was a kind of best of the best--small portions of popular appetizers and it was exactly enough. The mango smoothie was thick and lush with perfect chewy boba. I pretty much do grubhub delivery most of the time and their deliveries are fast and the food arrives tasting quite good however dining in the restaurant was just so much better. Duh. The food seemed to have more depth of flavor than take out or delivery. We had the chicken Tom ka soup which is the coconut milk soup. Pad Thai was good not great. This place has some of the best Thai food anywhere on the North Shore, period. The dishes and flavors are authentic. If you look at the bad reviews on here it's all people complaining about bad service. I've been eating here over a year and have never had an issue. This place is a true Thai food gem. read more

It was snowing outside, so we started with some warm Jasmine Tea and a delicious Tom Ka with tofu, its a coconut milk soup with lemongrass and mushrooms, delicately sweet and warm. The crab sticks were their take on crab rangoons, standard flavor but different in texture. Now one of the best items I've tried of that evening was the lime chicken. It was juicy, deep fried and flaky toppe with an insanely delicious zesty lime sauce. That chicken is a must order if you're here, but then we move onto their local favorites like the crispy panang noodles, these are reduced pananang curry stir-fried crispy flat noodles, and were also warm and comforting, the local favorites are actually inspired by the customers, I thought that was unique. Somehting that caught my eye even more was Pad See Iew dish but it has a crying tiger steak in there adding another juicy flavor that paired surprisignly very welll with the flat noodles and sweet soy sauce based dish. Their spring rolls are small and made from scratch, I always appreciate the made from scratch aspect, and the food is good so it shows that hard work does pay off. I ordered their half roasted crispy half duck, and it was honestly the crispiest duck I've ever had. Served with a sweet plum sauce that was perfect for dipping the duck in there. The duck was fatty and juicy and paired with veggies and fried rice. Highly recommend ordering that duck, I know there's too many good items on the menu. For dessert, we had the classic mango sticky rice, and the mango is the buttery manila mango that is in season until December and then they use a different mango until they're in season again. the sticky rice was sweet, lightly milky and overall this is a great spot. read more

Ruby of Siam introduced me to Thai food when I was about twelve years old... I had never tried it before and had no idea that it was one of the best foods ever. I've been obsessed ever since. My introduction to Thai food from Ruby of Siam came in the form of the lime chicken and Pad Thai (and maybe the fried rice?). These were so delicious, and now decades later, having tried Thai food all over the country and world, Ruby of Siam remains my absolute favorite #1 Thai food restaurant! Ordered to-go from here for an outing with some childhood friends, and hadn't had Ruby of Siam in well over ten years. I've had soooo many Thai places recently, and even the really good ones don't compare to Ruby of Siam. I don't think I ever knew how amazing this place was in comparison to all others, but I sure do now. You have to try this place. We ordered all of our favorite things -- Chicken Pad Thai (no bean sprouts), Chicken Fried Rice, and Lime Chicken plus a suggested pot stickers by the restaurant (seriously also some of the best I've had). Everything was amazing, and you absolutely need to check this place out in person or through to-go orders. They have a way of packing in delicious flavor with a light and fluffy feeling that isn't overwhelming or too sauce-heavy. Just perfection. If you're disappointed, you're wrong. read more

After 20 mins. waiting for order to be fixed and served, we just left. Communicating with servers is difficult and can cause wrong dishes served. Have had take out from this place before. Food is good. Restaurant service is bad, really bad. We were there on a Saturday night. They had a long line of customers waiting for carry out both ahead of us and behind us. Only one host that was taking orders over the phone as the long line waiting kept on waiting. We waited 10 minutes to get up to the host who sat us without a menu and told us he was not our server. We waiting 10 minutes and no server. Only two other tables were dining in and they were waiting for their bills. Went downstairs into the kitchen and asked for a server. The owner came out and saw our table and said to us "You can't sit there. You need to move". We told her that is where we were seated and where shall we go. She kept on saying "You can't sit there" and ushered us to the front door. She refused to seat us at another table, no idea why. Never had an experience like that before. We left through a line of people waiting for their pick up orders and knew we would not return. We will not return to Ruby of Siam. read more

Ruby of Siam has stood up to some EXCELLENT competition in the neighborhood, to become my current (early 2022) favorite restaurant in Downtown Highland Park. There are some awesome restaurants within the confines of the downtown area, and Ruby of Siam managed to beat them by figurative inches. It's not too dissimilar to the Skokie location, where there are a lot of other solid competitors. The family who own the restaurants seem to really know their stuff! So, lemme preface this part of my review by saying, I've had a LOT of Thai and Thai-fusion food in my life... I mean, probably a literal ton, over the decades. It's one of my favorite world cuisines. I'm by no means a picky eater - I enjoy Thai food across the spectrum, from fast food to fancy dinners - but I can definitely tell when food is prepared with fresh ingredients and care. Both Ruby of Siam locations excel in this regard. Their vegetables were super-fresh, and cooked perfectly... with a reverence only someone who loves and respects veggies would provide. I've under-prepared and over-cooked enough phak kat hongte, phak kat khao, thua ngok, and other veggies to understand the attention they need to get juuuuust right. Their proteins were all done nicely, and their sauces / broths / seasonings were expertly balanced. Having eaten from both locations a number of times, I also know what spice balance to ask for to suit my tastes. Consistently, they nail it at Ruby of Siam. The Highland Park restaurant has a very nice dining room, that feels cozy and smells great. The location is pretty good for Downtown Highland Park (mostly street parking, but there are public lots and two public garages within walking distance), with several 15-minute carry out spots nearby for convenience. Their prices are pretty reasonable for a casual sit-down restaurant the neighborhood, and - IMHO - a bargain for the consistent quality I've experienced from Ruby of Siam. Their staff are all friendly, and good at their job. They were even kind enough to sell us frozen galangal root slices at discount price, for when we make Thai food at home. The kitchen and staff can get a little overwhelmed during peak dinner hours, so I've since been ordering earlier or later in the day. All of these experiences, and great eats, add up to my current favorite food experience in downtown Highland Park. There's good competition who may yet usurp their spot, but I know I'll always get a good Thai lunch or dinner from Ruby of Siam. read more

This review is primarily for the food because we actually dined there. The service was poor and irrelevant. It took 15 minutes for us to be seated even though there was only one table of customers seated. This was 6 pm one evening. Then after we were seated it took 20 minutes for someone to take our order. Then they got it wrong, and the food had to be sent back and re-ordered. It was sort of a disaster. But once the curry arrived, it was tasty and good. Perhaps a take-out the next time, but we have no intentions to return to the dining room. It was very unpleasant. read more

Phenomenal Thai lunch. For the quality, absolutely worth the prices. I've been chasing the perfect pad-see-iew since I left the west coast, and I found it here. The tom ka was amazing, with a choice of mild, medium, or hot spice level. The fried baby egg rolls were fantastic, I really liked both the chicken and the vegetable. The pad Thai was, as my partner said, his "favorite authentic pad Thai". I was genuinely impressed with how tender the chicken was. I have had Ruby of Siam in Skokie but this was my first at the Highland Park location. Very friendly and quick service. My friend and I shared their Basil Chicken with rice.It was a seriously huge portion with tons & tons of protein. It was so filling even with the two of us sharing it. Flavor was fine but I wouldn't call it delicious. We also both had a Thai Iced Coffee and they were well priced and very delicious!
