The Jaguar is a no-frills joint that feels very authentic and homey, with reasonable prices (not SUPER cheap for Mexican food, but won't break the bank). I tried huaraches here for the first time, which I felt like was a piece of yummy dough (kinda like pita bread) with taco fillings on top. I enjoyed the carne asada, and my roomies got the tortas sandwiches, which were large and delicious! Highly recommend the al pastor tortas!! I don't understand why the overall rating for Jaguar is less than at least four stars. The food is really good quality, flavorful and they serve you very reasonable portions. My only "complaint" could be that the enchiladas verdes were a little too spicy for me, but still so delicious I ate all of it! Literally just ordered more food about five minutes ago. We've passed by this restaurant for years, and just never got around to trying it. I had a delicious chicken burrito; my husband had some kind of steak platter. We were both very pleased with the food and will be going back. The prices are reasonable. Only negative....if you have issues communicating in "not perfect English" you may have a problem. read more

I've lived near Jaguar most of my life and never tried it until yesterday. I saw good reviews for NY Restaurant Week. I decided to try the chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce from the regular menu. The food was delicious! The chicken was nicely seasoned and the sauce had just the right spicy kick. The lady was friendly and inviting both over the phone and in person. I will definitely visit again. read more

Ordered a chicken quesadilla on door dash. Unfortunately the quesadilla wasn't filled with much cheese. The chicken itself was kind of dry and not much flavor. There could be more love put into this dish. The tortilla looks like it wasn't on the grill for very long either. Because I can see the fresh ingredients I believe this could have been better. FOOD POISONING!!! At a first glance, this restaurant has the aesthetic appeal of hole-in-the-wall dining. Unfortunately, the "B" health grade was an all too accurate marker. While a commendable passing grade in school - hardly the case here. Maybe it's my fault for ignoring Bloomberg's health system. I still took basic precautions, though. No chicken, no raw meat. It was a chorizo torta. I'm willing to bet that the meat I ate had, at best, been sitting in the food danger zone since the restaurant opened that day. My non-meat-eating girlfriend who accompanied me felt totally fine, solidifying this assumption. It's a shame, because the meal was delicious, and the service was friendly. Typically, Jaguar would be the kind of place that I'm all in for. And I was - until I woke up from intense stomach pains. There are a few other Mexican eateries within a 10 minute walk - go there instead! read more

They aren't closed! Seems like a family-run business with the matriarch overseeing everything. My veggie burrito was massive and really inexpensive for the amount and quality. They were also able to whip up an aqua fresca for me which I appreciated. It did feel like one of those western movies - I walked in to a mostly empty and dark space, and everyone turned to look at me, but a simple "are you open? can I order something?" was returned with smiles and an eagerness to serve. This place was a pleasant stroll from Central Park - my husband and I were looking for food, and there was The Jaguar, in all its glory! Okay, so there's not a lot of explicit glory - we had to walk by twice before we were sure it was open, because the lights were very low. Prices were more than reasonable, and the food was delicious. My husband maintains he had the best torta he's ever eaten. The meat was seasoned very well, and the bread was toasted but not soggy. We also ordered tostadas, which were very good. On the downside was a painfully loud jukebox. This thing was intense. In the future, I think we'd investigate take-out options, considering the proximity of the park and the sheer volume of that machine. read more

A very cute, small restaurant that feels very Mexican inside, with the virgin Guadalupe watching over you as you eat your (delicious) chile relleno to the sound of Telemundo on the TV. The dim lighting and juke-box give the place a very casual vibe. There were a few guys having some beers one table over, so I suppose you could also swing by if you only wanted some drinks. My friend ordered a burrito and I had chlle relleno, and we were both happy with our food and the prices. There are many options for Mexican food in this neighborhood so it's really hard to say with any authority which is better than the others, but I was certainly happy with my meal here. read more
