I took my Joseph today for his first haircut. Brandon cut his hair. He did an outstanding job on his hair and was very good with kids. I was not sure how it was going to turn out but it was perfect. Well, I never thought I'd ever give 1 star to anyone in all my years of "yelping" but here I am, giving the lowest of the low. My 23 year old son went in to have a "trim." A trim means taking off the least amount of hair possible to make it look healthy again, right?? After just a few minutes in the chair, by his recount, Edward Scissorhands started chopping away. To put it in perspective, my son's hair was long-ish, covered his neck and the front came down to his chin. As this barber (18 yo kid) started hacking at my son's hair, he could see the frustration. My son alerted "Edward" that he was already taking too much off and could he please leave the length. As more confusion and lack of experience kicked in, the hair got exponentially shorter and uneven. Finally, another barber came to what was suppose to be the rescue and further exacerbated the hair situation by having to cut more. Not only did they cut more but they had to buzz the back of the head because it was so bad. The top was left long and un textured with no style whatsoever! WTH, JAKE's. What kind of outfit are you running leaving an inexperienced hacker to cut someone's long beautiful hair???? Granted, it was my son's bad for booking an appointment with a barber who could get him in same day and within 10 minutes of calling. That was a sure sign that no one was lining up out the door to get a haircut here. Even worse, they made him pay for a hack job he didn't expect. BAD BUSINESS!!! With that said, if you don't care much about your hair, this review has no bearing on you and you can go on with your buzz cut. However, if you value your locks, RUN, don't walk, in the other direction. Go see Saul at OC Barbers Parlor on Main. EXPERIENCE is what you'll get with him. He's worth the wait. I'm usually really chill at the barber and all I need is just a haircut and I move on with my life. Walked in, waited a little bit, asked if they have WiFi so I can finish someone in my laptop until they get to me and they said they do but they don't know the password. So I was like whatever I'll just wait then. They finally get to me, I show the guy a picture of me and I tell him I wanna being it back to this length. He says okay. I showed him couple more photos too to make sure and he agreed. He started cutting my hair, facing me away from the mirror -- which is fine but I didn't know how short he was getting my hair. He finally finished then I'm like this is way shorter than the picture I showed you! And he's like "yeah but it looks better." So I told him it's not what I wanted though but whatever. Worst experience at a barbershop I've ever had... ever! This place is unorganized, clicky, circus, hangout barborshop. If you want to go and wait for an hour to an hour 1/2 trying to get a poorly done haircut then I would go here. If you'd rather an organized professional run establishment ... go somewhere else. You wait hours for a haircut that I could do better myself. You will be passed over for buddies of the unprofessional barbors and friends of the shop. I will not ever be going back! Cannabis is freely passed and used at this establishment. I never honestly considered buying my own clippers and scissors to cut my own hair, rather do that to save more of my time and the extreme hassle this shop brings. My time is valuable and they have no consideration for anyone elses time but their own. Update 6/19/18 Just pissed! I've been coming here for some time. Jake wasn't here, but he should have been! No acknowledgment walking in. 2 guys getting haircuts. Taking forever. Hispanic guy (always arrogant barber) finishes. His buddy comes in and cuts right in on chair. No comment no mention he had appointment. Steven other barber takes 30 mins to cut guy who had a crew cut already! Almost an HOUR WAIT!!!! Then frustrated I get up and ASSHOLE MEXICAN BARBER. Says "OK..well one less lol" Almost 2 years coming here. Jake, your employees are shitbirds. First time here. Good location for me. Walked in was very welcoming. Few guys and the barbers were joking back and forth. Great atmosphere. Traditional barber shop like I want! Got a great haircut. Straight edge razor clean up, etc. Price is really reasonable. This is a no frills barber shop. If you're looking for the barbers to bend over backwards to make sure you feel warm and welcome and a hot towel massage like some of the people reviewing below I suggest a salon or a chain haircut place, Supercuts maybe? Try out the barbers find the one that works, in my case Steven is on point and perfect every time. A little bit of a wait but that's what you get for what it is. Once they cut your hair a couple of times and know you're a regular then you'll get the acknowledgement it seems so many people below me crave when they walk in the door. Jake's is definitely the BEST barber shop in HB! Been to just about all of them...almost lost hope on the barber shop scene here in HB. Coming from LA we're proper fades and cuts are a must, I couldn't find a barber who could actually do it. And then I found Boggie, yes... Boggie! Not to be confused with Gizmo (My mistake)..He has the cuts your looking for!! Taper Fades, comb over, proper men's cut...all him. Now I take my two sons to him as well and nobody else. If there's something to be said for the power of first impressions, then this tiny shop located at the far end of a strip mall made a pretty lousy one today. After pulling into the parking lot at 5 PM, I found myself greeted by locked doors and lights out. A peek through the front window revealed a pile of clipped brown hair strewn underneath the first red barber chair. I was visiting from out of town and took my grandson in for a much needed haircut. He was called up and I started to tell the barber how we wanted his hair cut. He said "who's we". He had no interest in what I was saying. He was so rude. I work in customer service and this guy could use a refresher course. Maybe he doesn't like women in the shop. This is a great shop that always gets the job done. If I ever go to another barber shop my wife will say, "you didn't go to Jakes, did you!?" Had jake cut my husband's hair several times and it was OK. Most recent experience was a total disaster. New guy, 'Bogar', cut his hair because Jake was busy. The neckline was cut almost out to his ears in back, big gaping chunks of hair missing on the sides, crooked uneven etc. grossly incompetent. Will take months to grow out.
