Decided to come back here as a recently retired colleague who worked for one of our suppliers recently moved from Hawaii to SOCAL. Food was great along with the Hula Pie which brought back fond Hawaii memories for her. Great service by our Server Jordan and scored a great table with beach views. Along with Allen who was our Valet. Not quite Hawaii beach vibes but none the less almost as good. Probably the coolest bar in Southern California. Upscale but comfortable with views on the ocean and nice tabletop seating around an "L" shaped bar. Exposed wood beams and roof - very cool interior. Riley was rocking the bar like a pro, exceptional service, quick witted and quick with the drinks. In all my years attending the races I've only been here twice... great spot to watch the races with two flat screens. Went Strawberry & Candied Walnut Salad with the Pan Roasted Chicken entree. I celebrated my husband's birthday at Jake's in Del Mar! We've eaten at their sister restaurants in Malibu (Duke's) and Kauai (Keoki's) and were excited to try Jake's! I thoroughly enjoyed the Surfing Steak, which came with sirloin, jumbo shrimp, whipped potatoes, roasted cauliflower, and chimichurri sauce. The sirloin was cooked to a nice medium rare and very tender and flavorful--it didn't need the chimichurri. I loved how juicy and succulent the shrimp were, and the potatoes were very creamy! However, the star of the dinner was their famous Hula Pie. This is what keeps us coming back to their sister restaurants. It's a heavenly dessert with macadamia nut ice cream, a chocolate cookie crust, hot fudge, toasted mac nuts, and whipped cream. I'd come back to Jake's for the Hula Pie alone because it's that good. I wish there was a way to rate a 4.5. I can't give Jake's a 5 because there are a few clunkers, but it is closer to 5 than a 4. It is a beautiful restaurant with a lovely view. The service is close to great. The food is for the most part excellent. A few items were not special. We ordered the crispy calamari 5/5, jumbo lump crab cake 5/5, heirloom tomato salad 2/5, watermelon & cucumber salad 3/5, lemon garlic roasted fish 5/5, grilled shrimp 4/5, pan roasted chicken 3.5/5, surfing steak 4/5 (horseradish potatoes too harsh), hula pie 4/5, and chocolate peanut butter torte 5/5 (might have been my best dessert ever). Can't beat the location of this restaurant. Right on the beautiful beach at Del Mar. It was a beautiful day when my friend and I met up for lunch. We had reservations and that's highly recommended. Everyone was seated on their enclosed and shaded patio or just inside to take advantage of the view. That's why we are there after all. Parking is a bit tricky in the area. Best to do the $8 valet parking at the restaurant. Street parking is limited to 2 hours nearby. The residential street parking is free and further away. About a 10 mins walk. There are metered and a paid public parking lot across the street for $4/hr on most days. The service was good with a very attentive staff. I got the vegan ramen for lunch because it sounded different so I wanted to give it a try. It fell a little short on flavor and the ramen was falling apart. But it was full of vegetables. My friend ordered the turkey sandwich. The portions were big. She ate half and said it was delicious. She ended up taking the other half home for dinner. The homemade potato chips looked good but I was told too vinegary for her taste. read more

If you are Del Mar stop here! Beautiful views of the ocean, tasty drinks and food that melts in your mouth. I tried their Espresso Martini with a Baileys float on top.. superb! He opted for a Paloma which had a kick to it and was great! We opted to share the Ahi Tostada for an appetizer which was on point. The ahi was fresh, the onions, whipped avocado, pickled papaya slaw and sesame soy dressing was phenomenal. This place was awesome! Came here to celebrate a birthday and the atmosphere and staff were awesome. Right from when we stepped in, the hostess asked whose birthday it was, and there was even a handwritten card and little shell on the table when we got there. Several other staff members came over to say happy birthday too! The view was also amazing - though it was a cloudy day, it was still beautiful but I can only imagine how beautiful it must be on a sunny day. The food was also very tasty. I got scallops and the bbq ribs as an appetizer. The scallops were seared perfectly and the risotto was super yummy, though felt just a little salty by the end. We walked in on a week day and although we still had a view, there were 2 rows of tables in front of us. This place has a small menu with the typical seafood items: - Ceviche (2/5): lacked flavor. Used cooked fish instead of shrimp - Mai Tai (2/5 for flavor, 5/5 if youre just trying to get drunk!) I was with my wife who had three back surgeries and an Army Veteran who lost one leg serving our country. Obviously, he can no longer walk on his own without the help of his wheelchair. Both my wife and friend had their handicap placards with them, but guess what? Jake's restaurant will not let us park on the Handicap spot if we don't pay $8.00. What???!!! Is that even legal? This is our families undisputed favorite restaurant in North County. Great spot for birthday, celebration, anniversary, etc. We've never had a bad experience at Jake's. The ambiance is amazing, you're right on the beach, the service has always been exceptional and friendly - all the staff are professionals and have been working in the service industry for decades. The important stuff: cocktails are amazing, get the Dukes mai tai or Paloma; the ceviche and ahi tostadas are not to be missed. For main entrees I don't know what to tell you, I've tried every single one of them and I love them all equally. If it's your first time at Jake's you MUST get the Hula Pie! read more

I'll start by saying it's a shame to see how downhill the service and value at Jake's has gone in recent years. My family and I have frequented this terrific location and remember great service and good food quality. Unfortunately, it seems that management and ownership are addicted to shrinkflation and never returned to standards. Serving expensive entrees is expected with a waterfront location. But, serving product that was clearly frozen is unacceptable. Reheating food in a microwave that was left to go cold because of no runners is unacceptable. Also, it's clear that they need to rethink their hiring. With such competition for entry-level, bartending and serving their must be, how on earth can they hire people who don't seem to really value their job. It's often the Gen-Z gaze off (no eye contact), the "what now" vibe when needing to request something they actually forgot. I've heard many similar stories from friends. It's a shame. I guess we'll see how long Jakes can hang on by the kindness of unwitting tourists, and how much the ownership keeps exploiting it. There's many other great choices right nearby... try them. The view is fantastic as is the food. I started with the seafood chowder which was piping hot and absolutely delicious. I loved the little bits of corn added. I followed that with the fresh fish Caesar which featured seared tuna. Tuna cooked nicely rare and Caesar had nice big shavings of Parmesan cheese. Hula pie for dessert. It really hit the spot and you have to share it with a group. No one could eat the entire piece. Went for a celebration with six people. Started w a very generous and tasty crab cake (we shared and it was ample!) followed by a crisp and delish Ceasar salad and hubby had the chowder (it was "okay") and then our entrees...soooo good...I had the halibut and it was flaky and fab...hubby had the crusted ahi which he thoroughly enjoyed! 3.5 stars, rounding to 4. I came here for a work event a year ago and was looking forward to coming back. However, I was a little bit let down, and I don't think I'll be a frequent customer at Jake's. My partner and I stopped by at noon on a Saturday and asked for a table near the water. The greeters were incredible and accommodating; we were sat at our table with the view within 10 minutes. The best thing about Jake's is the proximity to and beautiful views of the ocean. Such an incredible experience dining with a view. We got the calamari which were large and juicy yet lacked some flavor. My partner got the fish plate which she absolutely loved; the squid ink and the tender, flaky filet made the fish. I had the fish tacos and while they were tasty, the corn tortillas were disappointing. They were stale, "wannabe" crispy, with a cardboard-like taste. For dessert, we shared the famous hula pie which was absolutely delicious if it weren't for a piece of saran wrap my partner found inside... We nicely notified the water about the incident, but his response was not on par. He said sorry, but laughed it off with "Mistakes have been made I guess." We still had to pay for the pie. Total for lunch being $100 may not be worth it with the inconveniences we experienced. Go for the view and the food will be hit or miss or maybe saran wrap lol read more

Let me start by saying that we love Jake's and the food is always on point. we had a reservation today at 4 o'clock and decided to come in early. They said we could sit in the bar, but there were tables in the bar that were open and they said we could not sit at them because they weren't seating until 4 o'clock. As much as I understand that while we have sat here, they are seating people in the bar at those tables. When I asked the hostesses were kind but kind of put off by me asking if we could sit at this one table and now there is a party 15 minutes later sitting at that table. It was my parents' anniversary yesterday so made reservations for them here since they hadn't had a date alone in years. I called beforehand to put my card on file and spoke to Dean the manager. He was super nice and helpful. He asked me their names, and how long they have been married. When they arrived and got situated he greeted them personally and congratulated them on their long marriage (33 years). He made sure they had a good time which is special coming from the manager. My parents said they loved the food and the atmosphere. I really appreciated the manager going the extra mile to guarantee a good experience. I'll be coming here for my anniversary also. I love having dinner at Jake's. My husband and I went there on January first to celebrate New Year's. We were sitting in a very nice spot facing the ocean and having a great time ourselves. For dinner, salads first and then entrees. The salads were great, entrees hmmmm not so much. Mine was tasting like perfume and Patrick's entree was only truffle oil taste, like super strong. But what really disappointed us was the service. The waitress was working like a "road runner" she would just pass by, most of the time running. We went to Duke's the previous night, but we honestly didn't know what to do for dinner and have a picky eater, so hubs ended up making reservations here with less than a couple hours notice. We did valet since parking is super difficult in the area and they definitely tetris the cars in the lot. We didn't sit right by the windows but still got a great view. And I noticed a signed card placed at our table when we had sat down. They do notice the notes in the Opentable reservation notes! :) Our waiter was super sweet and told us how he started off at Duke's in Hawaii but that his wife got transferred out to SD. Well he definitely brought the Island hospitality to us! We shared the grilled prawns appetizer, ordered the kiddo chicken tender, hubs had the passionfruit soy shortribs, and I ordered the kid's fish and chips since I wasn't very hungry. Thank you Duke's for letting me order of the kid's menu! I ordered a cucumber mocktail which was super refreshing, and the hubs had a beer. We really enjoyed the grilled prawns wrapped with prosciutto, and served with diced melon. The kids fish and chips was the perfect portion for me, pretty standard but hit the spot. He enjoyed his passionfruit soy short ribs, there was some drier parts of the short rib but for the most part it was a moist and tender hunk of beef on top of mashed potato purée, served alongside bok choy. Last but definitely not least, our sweet waiter told us that because we were celebrating our anniversary, we could choose any dessert on the house. We were pretty full, but asked if it would be possible to find a smaller piece of their famous hula pie. Omgg get this. It's a huge slice of macadamia nut ice cream on top of a chocolate cookie crust, then drizzled with fudge and toasted macadamia nuts. It's divine, and not overly sweet tbh.
