Step back in time in this hometown diner! Friendly greetings upon entering make you feel comfortable and invited. The food is fresh and filling with huge portions! The coffee is life! The cook is super efficient! Definitely recommend checking these guys out for breakfast but bring your appetite! They also serve lunch and dinner on certain days.

I love a diner and we walked in and waited 5 minutes !!!! Everyone was so pleasant and the place is packed with townies. I ask the server what to get and they steered me away from the obligatory steak & eggs and said her this omelette with Cacoila is a pork meat and it comes with a sweet au jus !! The grilled English muffins was a nice touch ! Shelly was the best and got both orders quick and the coffee is ok and Shelly has a great smile and kept us happy My buddy got a regular omelette and both breakfasts were 20 bucks ..... so affordable and good

Traditional diner atmosphere with a very good looking menu! Lots of options! We got the Portuguese Benny and Hash and Roll Benny with a single crepe. Very tasty but the potatoes could be cooked a little more, that's the ONLY reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Waitress was very friendly and enlightened us when we inquired about the age of the diner. It's been here since the 80's!

Very good place for breakfast! The diner has plenty of seating, clean and nostalgic. I had the hungry man special and it was good. Service was fantastic. She was very nice! Prices are comparable for breakfast food in the area.

South Street Diner - Patty Melt and Fries

PATTY MELT REVIEW…read more Iconic diner on the edge of Chinatown, a couple blocks east of the Expressway. It's been around for decades and it's open 24/7. More of an authentic this-place-has-aged feel than the typical diner attempt to evoke an earlier era. Went in the morning and went for a patty melt-- because I could. It's too elusive these days, so being able to not only find one but have it at breakfast, a double win. Double patty is standard, not an add-on, and fries (probably frozen, but lengthy, crisp and fluffy) are included. No onions, no rye, but lettuce and tomato-- a non-traditional configuration. Nicely browned patties that had juiciness. The ingredients weren't anything to write home about, but the execution was great all around and so was the cheerful service from a seasoned veteran. Sure, I've had better with the proper rye, griddled onions, and higher quality beef, but an easy 4 stars for the execution, value, vibe, and being able to even order a patty melt before 10 in the morning. Bonus points for a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle that was slightly warm. Breakfast items (eggs, crispy home fries, and pancakes) on a neighboring table looked good.

South Street Diner was one of the few places open that early, so I decided to give it a try. Parking was easy at that hour, and I thought it was kind of cool seeing a classic diner tucked in among all the large office buildings downtown. I was in the mood for pancakes and ended up ordering the diner special with eggs over medium, home fries, corned beef hash, bacon, and pancakes. Unfortunately, the food was mostly average to below average. The eggs were a little underdone, the home fries were slightly overcooked in spots, and the toast was pretty standard diner fare. The homemade salsa was actually a nice touch and added some flavor to the potatoes. The biggest disappointment was the corned beef hash. I was hoping for something homemade, but it reminded me of the canned version I grew up eating. The texture and flavor just weren't for me, and I ended up leaving most of it behind. The pancakes were okay but a little dense and doughy, nothing particularly memorable. On the positive side, the coffee was decent, the service was fine, and being open early is definitely a plus for travelers. Overall, I'd put this one close to 3 stars. It's convenient if you need breakfast before sunrise, but the food didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for.
