Definitely our worst experience so far in SML and I got food positioning from a different restaurant earlier this week. The host (was it Jake?!) was incredibly rude and unfriendly. It baffles me when people like that decide to work in hospitality. Having someone with that type of sour demeanor as your customer's first point of contact is truly just a bad business decision. We turned around and left, so can't even comment on the food. We were just visiting SML during this week, so if you're like us and looking for some good food and kind people, Alessandro's has been one of our favorite places at SML - for takeout and dine-in. read more

My sister and brother-in-law spent their honeymoon on Smith Mountain Lake and I wanted to treat them to dinner @ Jake's Place. Being out of town I contacted the General Manager 'Mike Gordon'. He was extremely responsive to each FB message I sent, took my payment information and made their dinner experience enjoyable. Their feedback back was the Seared Ahi Tuna, the Coconut Shrimp and the Pan Seared Scallops along with a few ice cold beers and cocktails made for a delicious and enjoyable night out! Jake's Place was near my hotel, so I visited once during my quick weekend trip to SML. We sat outside on the patio which had a great view of the lake. I ordered the Philly Steak Sub which was really good and some cocktails. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast taco meal. The taco was good, he wasn't crazy about the home fries that came with it. My family and I frequent Jake's when we are in SML, especially in the summer. We love the atmosphere and it's my daughter's favorite restaurant on the lake. We hadn't been able to get to the lake for awhile so we were pleasantly surprised with the new menu this time. We all got different varieties of their pizza and everyone loved their meal. Margarita was also super tasty. No sour mix! Yay! Being the Mac and cheese lover that I am, I absolutely had to try the bacon Mac and cheese pizza. It did not disappoint! There is always a wait at Jake's but it is well worth it, especially if you sit out on the patio/deck on nice days.. The menu is extensive, a little bit pricey, but the food is worth it. If you're feeling a little adventurous the drink specials will not leave you wanting. Jakes is a family friendly and very pet friendly restaurant if you're looking for a laid back place to enjoy the lake. read more

They recently got a new chef and the food is great. Was with a big group of people and we got the seared tuna as an appetizer. They also have a descent beer selection. They also have good mixed drinks. I recommend the Strawberry Mojiito the strawberries taste fresh. I was really impressed with everything on the menu. Every selection on the menu sounded good. I had a hard time decideing on the seafood options. The bacon Mac and cheese pizza is good never had pizza like that. read more

My in laws live at SML so we've been around .. jakes is a 45 minute drive for us but I'd say we will be back. Let's do the good.. good lake presence.. good beers and the best fries I've had around SML. Also note worthy were the burger and cheese steak... oh and the chicken fingers for the kids are definitely above average. I would say the pizza is nothing to get excited about but did the job. And for st Patrick's day weekend they had Rueben egg rolls that were also very above average read more

My wife and I had a great night at Jake's! We each had the NY Strip, which was a perfect cut of meat cooked to perfection. The baked potatoes were also cooked just right. The staff was at double-time pace taking care of the customers, but still friendly and attentive. And then we got the Milky Way cake.. wow! Dense creamy ice cream, moist chocolate cake, Milky Way flavored toppings, and real whipped cream (to go). Delicious. We highly recommend Jake's! read more

Bourbon chicken sandwich with mushrooms was decent. Sit on water. Just a casual place. Nothing to write home about.

Food and service was really good. We were lucky to have arrived right after they opened otherwise we wouldn't have gotten as nice of seating as we did. The food is mediocre and way overpriced! The tension between the staff as well as the owner made the atmosphere extremely uncomfortable. They way the bartender ran over the servers and treated them like children instead of employees was disgraceful. The owner's constant micromanaging was blatant. WORST DINING EXPERIENCE IN THE LAKE AREA!!!! I know everyone has a bad day so I gave them several opportunities to prove themselves. They failed miserably every time! I give up!!! Good food when the restaurant is actually open. We stay at Halesford Harbor Resort multiple times per year and I could count on one hand how many times the restaurant was open. We have showed up to eat on a Sunday afternoon at 2 pm and have been turned away by wait staff because they have decided to close early. Visited for the first time a couple weeks ago. Very friendly staff. Sanitizer provided & enforced upon entry. Entry to outside seating area is blocked off & monitored in order to maintain capacity. They had a good system going. We sat outside with a decent amount of space. Things may have changed by now, since we were in phase 2 then, but this was my experience. Rude front GATE staff, including the manager who came down to help host staff. He was rude to everyone. 2 hostesses were arguing with patrons. The only reason they are getting a two star is because of the nice view of the lake. Went there this morning and our waitress was RUDE from the moment we sat down. We asked about mimosas and she said everything was already premixed. Then out came our food. It was mediocre at best. The chicken and waffles were terrible. The waffles were light and fluffy but the chicken tasted like fish. When the waitress didn't come back to check on us our friend got up and found her. Then when asking about the chicken being fried in the same fryer as the fish she replied, "IDK" with attitude. I then asked to order something different and she acted like it was a bother. Second order was better. Waitress was not engaged and seemed to be hung over. Very poor service with mediocre food at best. Don't waist your money here! read more

Management actually argued with me and was beyond rude even though I was very polite with him! It was difficult to even get him to come to our table! Food quality was disappointing, especially with regards to the price. We were practically the only ones sitting down eating in the restaurant yet the food was subpar. The crab and corn fritters was way overseasoned (too much old bay?) and all else was just ok. My husband ordered the avocado and crab panini and they didn't have avocado (but instead of saying that, they just made it without the avocado)...they were gracious enough to bring him something else after we raised the issue though. Overall, nothing really stood out to us as great...maybe the cole slaw? I suppose the location and atmosphere on the water is the real selling point here...don't think we'll ever be back. read more

Service was bad this visit. Not sure what the massive problems were but service was just awful. Very pleasant sitting outside in a warm sunny day. Huge "grass" umbrellas to offer a bit of shade. Food was fantastic! We had the Nella (best chicken sandwich in a long time!), Chicken tenders (oh, so tender!), and the Mac 'n cheese burger. We have been going to Jake's for years (about 2013 or 2014). We started with their calzone. Over the years we have seen the menu and flavors evolve. There are several standouts on the menu. The ribs are not a regular but when they are offered they aredefinitely worth getting. I really love the burger makeover they have had since summer 2018. I like a thick, juicy burger that is very flavorful. This IS the place to beat in the area for burgers. I realize that people have different tastes, BUT if you like a thick and juicy burger you need to try it. The Jacked Up Burger (phased out now) was my favorite last summer. We had 7 family members, annual reunion. First, several people ordered the crab legs, when they came, COLD! Several others had the baked potato as a side-- on the third attempt to bring a decent potato ( the potatoes were dark brown each time, or had black spots ) the manager was called--his explanation, " we don't look at the baked potatoes before they come to the customer"!! Overall, the one lb. crab legs for $24.00 was disappointing to say the least, even after they were warmed up. No offer by management to adjust the bill for all of the inconvenience, the only nice part of the evening was the server, she was most apologetic. Too bad, not a pleasant evening. The website says they are open until 9 but that is a lie. We pulled up at 8:45 to go in and have dinner and the manager met us on the dock and said that the kitchen closes at 8:45 and it has been that way for years. Their website did not say that. We have gone to Jake's Place many times since they opend and it has been average at best, but it is a nice location and a pleasant atmosphere. Unfortunately, we probably will not return based on the reception we got this evening. We are from Roanoke and have a vacation home here at the Lake and frequent all of the restaurants that you can reach by water. I would be surprised if Jake's Place stays open much longer if that is how they treat their customers. If your website states you are open until 9, that should mean the kitchen is open until 9 unless otherwise stated. read more

Tried to stop here for a quick lunch with a large group. We waited in line and when we got to the front the man working said it would be a while. We asked what a while meant and the man was rudely adamant that it would be a long time but refused to give us any more details. My company chose Jakes Place as our dining option for our staff retreat. We read a few reviews and had some reservations but after our experience it was clear the other reviewers who wrote negative things were either clueless as to great dining or had some other ulterior motives. Our experience was top notch from start to finish. The appetizers we ordered were a huge hit with all of group. We had the boiled shrimp, wings and pretzel bites! Absolutely delicious. We then moved onto the entrees, which included grilled BBQ chicken breast, filets, prime rib and tuna steaks. All of the entrees were excellent and all proteins were cooked to perfection. Our group also tried the different array of specialty drinks and they too were great. The management was extremely attentive and the servers were equally as good! I can't say enough about how great this place was. Just as a side note I recently moved to the area from Charleston, SC, which is widely considered the food Capitol of the south. I would put Jakes place up there with almost any of these great dining options in Charleston. Great job all and we will be back again next time we have an outing at SML! read more

We pulled up to the place in our boat and ate outside. That was nice, except for the crying baby. The beer was cold. My wife got the seafood platter. I got the Jerk Chicken Sandwich. It was ok. They always try to accommodate any number of parties and it gets a little hairy sometimes in the summer (as to be expected anywhere on the lake) but all in all, my family and I have always had a great time and enjoyed our meals.
