I want to like this place - I really do. I've been 3x with different people/social scenarios. The service has been a tad snooty/aloof. The food is just overpriced for slightly above taco bell food. The tables have been dirty each time, the salsa quite watery, and you may be parched for a long time. Fill those drinks/waters please! Always have a good experience when we come here. You'll get chips and salsa until your heart's content and decent food that is moderately priced. Although I like some of their food I was disappointed to see the extra charges on my receipt after leaving with my to go order. I feel they should make customers aware of these charges. So they can make the decision on wether or not they would like to order. I know it's not a lot of money but don't feel paying over 20.00 for one meal is worth it. It does say on the bottom of the receipt that the extra charges are due to the recent pandemic and I get that. Just think they should let customers aware of these extra charges before they order. Worst Mexican food ever? Pretty close if not. Started off with chicken wings appetizer that were supposed to be flavored with pineapple and chipotle salsa - wings were decent but didn't even taste at all different from just a standard wing. The chimichanga that one of us had was okay, but nothing to write home about and they charged extra for more sour cream ($1.50) - and then we noticed we could have gotten it for free off of the salsa table. I had chile verde which was awful, I mean, really awful and other than being green it wasn't like any chile verde I have ever had and I've had a lot. Third person had three street tacos - the al pastor didn't taste at all like it should, maybe they ran out of pineapples for the wings and the pastor? Shrimp taco was tasteless and rubbery and they use those cheap, tiny shrimp - ugh. Carne asada taco was ok. Finally we got some chile con queso to try and make the stuff taste better but that didn't work. I ended up leaving most of the chile verde. Even the rice and beans were bad - how they heck can you make refried beans tasteless? Well, they managed it. Service was not bad but not great - we won't be back. read more

Such a fun spot! Much smaller than the place downtown, but we didn't head up stairs. There is plenty of bar space if you are dining without minors. We had a fantastic experience, and they were very accommodating in regard to our little one. We split a fiesta platter, which was the perfect size for us. It came with a burrito, taco, half a quesadilla, and a flauta style thing (I am not sure exactly what it was). Everything was seasoned well, and there was plenty of flavor outside of salt. That is my least favorite thing about most Mexican dining things can be far too salty! Service was prompt, and we were left alone for most of the time, which is exactly how we like it. But, our water glasses were never empty and there was lots of chips and salsa. We are very much looking forward to going back. We like Jalapenos, and this is by far the best location. read more

Oh dear... where to start. Well, I've definitely been to worse restaurants but Jalapeno's is certainly a place in which I have no intention of ever going back. Their service runs like a drunken game of musical chairs; (which is probably fun at home but not when I'm hungry) their food is way over-priced for what I received and people that came in after me were being served first. I can get passed all that if the food is good, in which... it wasn't. My Chili Relleno resembled more of over cooked spinach with melted cheese than any Chili Relleno I ever remember having. If my really sub-par food came with a cheaper price, then I would rate this place average but the absolutely ridiculous pricing of their entree's and drinks should demand at least a little better quality. Not really much to say about the place, their servers were nice and the chips/salsa were better than a lot of other Mexican restaurants. But... that's really all I can give them credit for. After coming here for about a year, I have to say that I'm growing less satisfied with Barkley Jalapenos. From when they opened, everything started off great... There used to be a guy that worked there. I don't know if he was the manager or what his role was, but he was always there when we'd come in. He even remembered what we'd order and he was a really nice, personable guy. Around the time we noticed he wasn't there anymore, things really went downhill and the food quality isn't like it used to be. This may just be a coincidence. The portions are smaller, things are missing that used to be on our plate (such as sour cream), and I can't help but notice that prices are higher than they were less than a year ago. By comparison, the children's menu from another local Mexican restaurant had similar entrees, but were at least $2 per dinner less. If the owner is reading this (and I hope you are because we would love to see things improve) please look at your food quality. We've gotten enchiladas with un-melted cheese in the center. Meals seem really inconsistent, and whoever is cooking the majority of the time isn't doing a good job. And sadly, we used to have great waitress service. We still love our servers but it seems like we don't get checked on much during our meal because there's only one person in the entire non-bar half of the restaurant. It's been consistently this way for a while now. On the flip side, we have friendly and helpful waitresses. All interaction with staff is excellent. They always bring my kids ice cream cones, even if they didn't buy a kid's meal. I hope things improve because this has been our favorite restaurant. read more

A favorite of mine, that I love going to! Starting any dinner with a big mama is the way to go, one of my very favorite drinks in Bellingham. I started writing this review a couple weeks ago after a in person visit but erased it because I hate giving 1 star reviews. Today I ordered to go for a meeting I had scheduled and that too was a cluster. Both times we had a server by the name of Melinda and I really hope its an employee issue and not a whole restaurant issue because I used to order from here all the time and its going to be a shame to have to take my business elsewhere since my office is right around the corner, but after todays massive ball drop and embarrassing moment where I didn't have food for my catered meeting I dont think I have a choice. In person my service was also terrible. I took my family in for dinner and ordered something I had ordered a few days prior to go but Melinda said it wasnt on their menu and she would order it all ala cart. Well that cost me $26 where I had paid 18 the time before. When asked why the discrepancy she said she didnt know what I was talking about and that they've never had an option like that on the menu. At that point I was so annoyed and my kids didnt want me to push the issues so I didnt but that was only 1 of the issues. We were seated and forgotten about. Other tables were ordering although we were there first. She never re-filled drinks and she cursed dropping the F bomb at the table behind us when kids are everywhere in the restaurant. I know she saw my expression and know I wasn't happy about her. Overall it was a very bad experience. I hope Barkley Jalapenos can get it together. read more

Maybe it's just my bias but... First off, either they were very busy when I went there last or it's just me but it took awhile for them to get my family and I seated. The salsa, including the pico, is a bit on the spicy side so be warned. What took the most stars out of this were the tortillas; either they messed up and gave us corn tortillas, which I hate, or they gave us flour tortillas that tasted almost exactly like corn tortillas. Overall this is a decent place for a quick and basic lunch in the Barkley district. The lunch specials are a decent value and the food is served quick but also fresh. The chips and salsa are provided upon seating and are top quality. The ice water is served without ice which is odd. The service is personable and servers are attentive. This is not five star dining by any means but is a step down from traditional sit down dinning and a step up from a place like Chipotle. Probably some people will say this can't be a four star restaurant but I evaluate a restaurant for its food and service and this I would say the rating should be based on the food, which was excellent and the service, which was good, although they had our large party waiting way too long despite the fact that we called almost an hour earlier and they had plenty of tables empty - all they had to do was push them together. I had a chicken chimichanga (pictured) which I would rate as outstanding. A fellow diner had tacos (pictured), which he described as crispy, creamy and elegant. Good American-style Mexican food. The people are friendly, and they have an interesting menu. The pricing is a bit high compared to some of the other Mexican in the area, but the food is good and the portions are large. I'd recommend sticking to the more unusual plates (avoid the "combo plates") such as the Paella and other less common dishes, as they're much more interesting. read more

Stopped in for lunch today thought I'd try the place. Service was very slow even though it was not that busy. I always get a sense of the place by the chips and salsa. The chips were not warm, the salsa was decent. Ordered taco combo, took 20 minutes to come to my table. Food was lacking in flavor, very bland. Waited over 10 minutes for my check. I arrived at 11:45 and during the time I was there, they made about 8 giant margaritas with what looked like 4 ounces of tequila each. So, I guess it's a good place to get giant margaritas. Went here on CASH day (your entire bill is cut in half if you pay cash). Otherwise the pricing seemed a little high but the portions were huge! My granddaughter and I could have easily ordered one meal and split it. We had lots of leftovers to take home. I have been there several times to dine in and take out. Great food, ok service. The reason for my low rating is that my tip amount has been changed twice when I have gotten take out. I don't tip much for take out but at least I tip. I am on a fixed income and count every dime so this is (to me) poor taste. I took a picture of my last purchase in which I tipped $1.00 (because of an earlier change made by them) and they added another $3.00! I will find another mexican restaurant to eat at. I likely never would've come here if I had checked the ratings first, but we had a great experience so I guess we lucked out. The guy (owner?) who greeted us at the door was friendly, and our server was just adorable. We came for happy hour, which helps as I agree the menu prices are a touch high, especially for Bellingham (although they're pretty much right in line with Seattle prices). But for not very much money, we got a giant platter of a dip trio and chips, street tacos - and the carnitas was to die for - and a chicken quesadilla that completely filled us up, especially when topped off with a giant margarita that looked bigger than my head. Was it authentic Mexican food? No, but Washington is hardly known for its authentic Mexican food in the first place, and especially not near the Canadian border.
