My friends and I came for a late birthday dinner Saturday around 9:35pm. We came in a bit early and had to wait for a table so we went near by to the Iron Horse to have drinks while we wait. When we got back we were seated promptly for a party of 8. We ordered many dishes to try and share we were so hungry didn't get any pictures. Eggs & Caviar Seafood Soup Lamb Potatoes brava Gin & tonic oysters Chicken croquettes Quail Tomato bread and ham Moscow Mule Everything was delectable, a few day's before I went to the Arlington/Crystal City location for Jaleo's happy hour and I would have to say the DC location was better. This is one of my favorite hang out spots. I don't get to the dc location often, but visit the bethesda location as often as I can. By far, it's the greatest caipirinha in the area. The white sangria is lovely on a hot summer day. Thats just for starters, the codfish fritters and the gambas are to die for. I often ask for extra oil with the gambas so that I can just keep dipping bread. The lamb chops and skirt steak are really good - as is the potato salad with conserved tuna. Roasted asparagus and (if they have them in season) sugar snap peas are good sides. The last time we ordered the paella we were full long before it got to the table (it was taken home in doggie bags). In addition, I've never had a scallop so perfectly cooked as the ones I've had here. The restaurant can be a bit loud at it's busiest times - dont expect a quiet romantic dinner. But if you're hanging with friends and want a good place to have a few drinks and nosh...this spot is for you. read more

We were visiting DC (my husband for the 1st time) With our baby. Before entering the restaurant I asked the host if it was ok that we entered with a small baby and that we wanted to have lunch. A Caucasian host was extremely attentive and helpful and so was another of the host who was African American with long braids (wish I had their names) but got some really strange and judgmental looks from a 3rd host African American with a bun on her hair. I went outside and got my husband and the baby. When we came back inside the lady with the bun was the only one standing there. Again her very rude way of staring was what "greeted" us back. We did not look fancy at all, we had just driven 5 hours and were really tired and famished. She looked at me from head to toe (literally) and asked in a condescending tone "What do you need?" I politely replied that we had spoken with the other host about lunch. She then stared at the stroller and made a disgusted expression when she saw my 5 month old little baby. I was unable to enjoy my lunch, my husband spent the whole time telling me to let it go but I just couldn't. She seemed like she hated her job and gave us death glares every time we moved an inch or reached for our baby. I asked first because I really needed to enjoy my lunch after such a long drive with a small baby. Nonetheless we didn't and we paid 102$ for a delicious meal that unfortunately was tiny portioned. Honestly this place is pretty darn nice! The decor is visually appealing and the food is delicious! Really a place to bring friends or family and enjoy a nice dinner out. The place seems to be very busy and the staff seems to be on top of the flow quite nicely. My only possible critiques would be the flooring in the restroom is quite....unsettling. I felt like a bunch of people were excited for me to use the toilet. The staff is nice but the time it takes between seeing your waiter/waitress was rather lengthy. Hmm, over the years, I think I've been here maybe five times, always for lunch, sometimes on the weekends, sometimes during the week. It's a splurge for my budget, but the quality of the food, proximity to museums, and atmosphere make it worth it. A notch above La Tasca (and also more expensive), although I also like La Tasca very much. I've brought my mom and out of town guests here and they love it. It just feels a little more special than the museum eateries (with the exception of the Fountain court, which I love). I've had the tapas and the sandwiches. A tip: ask the waiter what dishes to order and what wine to drink. Here, I think I'd order wine by the glass, instead of sangria. If I were at La Tasca, I think I'd get sangria. But order one or two fewer than they recommend, unless you and your party are very hearty eaters, because the portions, especially for calamari, etc. are large and the food is quite rich. I actually preferred the calamari at La Tasca; a little lighter. But still quite good, just rich. Everything has quite a bit of olive oil in it, so if you're not accustomed to that, it might be rich for you. Eat a little bread with everything. Everything I had here was excellent. Two of us split the chorizo wrapped in potato, the tomato bread - one with jamon and one with manchego, the octopus, and one tuna belly special. Each one looked almost as good as it tasted. The service was good, it was a Saturday night so things were a bit rushed, but in this environment, it was expected. The room was also pretty loud, but again, I knew it would be, so that's no reflection on the experience, just a note about the ambiance. The prices were a bit high, I would assume because of the fact that Jose Andres is becoming a household name. Like I said, everything was delicious, but for menu items that only have four or five relatively cheap ingredients, I thought the prices were a little steep. Would I go back though? FOOD: For the discerning and not-so-discerning coinsure of Spanish delights, Jaleo-Chinatown is an opportunity for mind-alteringly delicious tapas spanning the entire traditional Spanish universe- from tender, well-seasoned beef to salted fish croquettes. The food at Jaleo is picture perfect and knocks the socks off anything you can get at La Tasca. The owners have a very traditional menu with items that are rare imports and contain hard-to-find treats from the Iberian Peninsula. According to my rad-o-meter, these are the best tapas in DC. DRINKS Great bar staff serve up the usual alcoholic drinks with a Spanish flare. The sangria matches the food in authenticity and compliments the tapas nicely, even in winter. No complaints here. OVERALL The setting is modern without trying too hard. Tables are a bit sparse, and you don't get much privacy, but the space affords wall-to-wall windows and (in summer) an outdoor patio with great views of Chinatown/Penn Quarter. The ambiance is quiet, but not too quiet. Conversation always possible, and encouraged by a decent sound track and a not-too-rowdy bar area. Finally made it to the last Jose Andres restaurant on my list. Even though I'm not a huge fan of tapas, I like this place (certainly beats La Tasca up the street). I especially like the multi-colored hexagonal design on the walls/ceiling. It's a good spot for happy hour. We ordered the canelones (too meaty for my taste, though the right amount of cheese); fried bacon-wrapped dates (excellent! the best dish); warm oysters with potato (interesting choice, but I prefer cold oysters); braised rabbit with apricot sauce (boney little critters, but tasty); chocolate hazelnut cake with praline ice cream (cake was too rich); and rice pudding (very airy with a hint of lemon and rice krispies on top). For drinks I had the house sangria (better than at most places) and cosecha miel (honey wine, so think of a high end mead). Overall, everything was delicious. I actually like all 3 locations for different reasons -- downtown is cozy -- Crystal City and Bethesda are beautiful spaces -- and actually think the food is a little bit more consistently higher quality in Crystal City -- but I love going to Jaleo -- it would be a great place for a Yelp event! My wife used to go here when she lived in D.C., so we stopped by while in town over the weekend. Our server was pleasant, but largely absentee. Luckily, we didn't need her much as we ordered all of our food upfront, instead of in courses like I normally would. Despite the M.I.A. status of our server, the pacing of the four tapas was pretty good. We started with the bread dressed with tomatoes and Manchego cheese. It was good, but nothing amazing. We then had the fried fingerling potatoes with cheese and a red sauce (very tasty), the house-made chorizo wrapped in a potato chip (cravable) and the steak with piquillo peppers (pretty good). Like any tapas experience, it was a little overpriced. For a single glass of wine and four small plates, the meal was just north of $50 before tip. Still, it was an enjoyable experience. To be honest though, I wasn't thrilled with table we were given...it was squeezed in between two other couples. They're definitely packing the people in to make a buck, that's for sure. All in all though, I would return. But most likely, I'll probably try some of the other Andres restaurants before doing so. We split 5 small plates and each was delectable: a shrimp omelet, roasted onion, sauteed mushrooms with garlic, cod croquettes with a honey aiolo dipping sauce, and fried dates. Every dish was successful. The beer, wine, and sherry list is appealing. We had a domestic microbrew and a Spanish beer (and both found the domestic much richer) and sampled 2 sherries after dinner. I was so excited for this experience. I had heard such great things and I admire what Mr Andres does for feeding many disaster impacted areas. To be up front the food was pretty fantastic. The service, on the other hand, ruined my experience. I saved up all year to go with a friend of mine who visits once a year from out of town, we try to do this type of experience when he visits at places we could not otherwise frequent regularly. Our reservation was at 7 and we were promptly seated near the window. The window seating was very cold and drafty. After being seated and waiting 20 min for our server to acknowledge us, she asked if we'd like water and disappeared for another 10 min. After our water was poured we were able to order sangria and our chef tasting experience. My friend has a nut allergy, so we promptly informed our server. The first few dishes came out quickly and were well presented. It was a busy night and the large table next to us also got the tasting, so I understand she was running around a lot. But when we got to the sautéed spinach dish she threw our items onto the table, announced then, and then said "oh" and took the spinach back to the kitchen without explaining what was going on. Apparently, it had pine nuts. She didn't return with pine nut free spinach for at least another 30 mins, well after our meat and mushroom accompaniment was done. We asked that it just be boxed up at that point. At several points people (not our server) tried to clear our plates and ask if that was it for us. We had to repeat several times we were doing the tasting menu still. It felt like we were being rushed out. The tasting has 2 desserts and we received our flan, which was delicious. We got coffee to accompany. We finished the flan and awaited our second dessert. We got another cup of coffee and finished that. The table behind us had to go to the host stand and ask for their bill. Our waitress had disappeared. At least an hour later our waitress reappeared and we asked if we'd like anything else. We asked about the second dessert and she said oh we didn't put it in because it has hazelnuts, do you want to substitute it for something else? We said yes and to just box it up. We'd been in the restaurant for 3 hours at that point. At least 20 min later we had to venture up To the host stand to request our check and pay. After the dessert came out we grabbed our things and left around 10:30 when our reservations were at 7. read more

I am reviewing this as someone who has only been to Jaleo for happy hour. I will write another review if I try them for dinner. Pros: Happy hour wine. It is $3.50/glass and you really cant beat that for Spanish wine. I am not sure if the happy hour is M-Th or M-F, but get there early as there isn't too much seating at the bar! Cons: Tapas are kind of expensive for what they give you. I don't mind spending money on good tapas, but at Jaleo, the quality of their products (Jamon, Queso, etc.) seems to be just mediocre and the portions are smaller than normal. (Note: I say this as someone who also lived in Spain, so I'm not just saying that as an American who is expecting a plate to be full!). The pros + cons make this place a happy hour spot I would return to. Mainly due to Jaleo's proximity to where I work, however, as well as the happy hour wine. read more

We were 10 minutes late, and not only was our reservation cancelled, she was downright rude about it. C'mon, its not like I was late for a surgery. 10 minutes isn't a big deal, I've easily waited that much with a reservation on multiple occasions. 3.5 stars really. I lithe service was excellent but I wasn't blown away by the food. There are a few things on the menu that I can make better at home and I am not Spanish or a professional chef, mainly the rossejat and sangria. I'd skip the cheeses too. If you have a good cheese shop or market, save the cheese for something you don't have to cook at home. The accoutrements that went with them weren't all that special. The ambiance here is wonderful, the wait is somewhat reasonable for the variety and space you are located in. The service is friendly and prompt. My only dig is that for dietary restrictions, you may have to just order somethings to go for your own good. I went here on a Friday night with some friends and found myself being more cognizant of what everyone else was ordering and trying to share more so than focusing on what I wanted to eat. I thoroughly enjoyed the beet salad, sharing the red bell pepper stuffed with cheese, and some saute'd mushrooms, and the Mojito that was freshly made. What I didn't like is the asking what was in this and that to make sure there was or wasn't meat in any of the dishes. This is great place for people who don't have any restrictions about what they want to eat but the Q&A required to get the others may not be worth the squeeze on this fruit. Okay Jaleo, review time. I love this restaurant. It's not a place I go very often because it does get pricey very fast, but I always have a great time. There's something about trying a bunch of different dishes and sharing that creates a very festive, happy mood. I have never had a bad experience at this restaurant. The hard part is remembering what all you tried so you can get it next time! On this particular visit, we had (for brunch, which has an additional small menu with egg dishes): Fried egg on bread with smoked salmon and goat cheese - definitely the best savory dish we ordered. Fantastic. I tried to recreate at home and it was good but nothing like this. Some kind of eggy apple french toast with vanilla ice cream (brunch menu) - this was amazing. Fried piquillo peppers - delicious Goat cheese and sausage croquettes - these were just ok. Sausage flavor wasn't pronounced and they were sitting in a pool of mayo. Tuna salad - Excellent. Pancakes with olive oil - they really are just pancakes. Don't pay $7 for them. Garlic chicken - yummy, but not the most exciting dish. Some kind of fried egg with tomato on rice (brunch menu) - delicious, more so than it sounds. I've tried plenty of other stuff here and there really are very few dishes that fall flat. read more

Walking and shopping around in the freezing cold in DC wasn't one of our brightest ideas, so when we saw this restaurant opened on a Sunday morning, we immediately ran in for the warmth and of course, for food! Our friendly waiter recommend we order more than 2 plates to share, so we ordered the Huevo pochado con Idiazábal, jamón y espinacas (poached egg on brioche with cheese, ham and spinach), Tortilla de patatas al momento (spanish omelet with potato and onions), the Chorizo Palacios (pork sausage), and ah, for dessert, the Espuma de chocolate negro con bizcocho de cacao y helado de avellana (Dark chocolate mousse with a cocoa sponge cake and hazelnut ice cream). All the dishes were fantastic, but my favorites were the Huevo pochado and the dessert. I recommend leaving room for dessert because the chocolate mousse was definitely worth it. I have nothing but great things to say about this place. Every tapas we had was delicious. And you watch the Sangria being made fresh, fruits peeled right in front of us! I agree with Jennifer S. on the recommendation as a great date spot. It was super crowded here when we arrived so we waited at the bar and stayed after several rather insistent bartenders convinced us to sit there for dinner. The menu is extensive. Some of the descriptions of the food don't do it justice but once it arrived- everything really was great so I'm convinced you can't go wrong with whatever you order. The salad was the biggest portioned tapas out of everything. The frozen ice molded tennis shoe with neon orange laces in which hush puppies (?) were served to people sitting on both sides of us at the bar was the the biggest attraction and unlike anything I've ever seen. Check out The Old Navy-esque large photos of people around the place. It may weird you out that they have large as life photo stickers of the people even on the bathroom floor with their hands up and who may appear to be looking at you as you sit on the potty! read more

Disappointed. I was really looking forward to this. We went on a Saturday night and really wanted tapas. I had not been to a Jose Andres location and was expecting something along the lines of Boqueria or Tertulia. Unfortunately it feel flat the moment we walked in the door. Cafeteria Hall Atmosphere: The restaurant was run down. I have to give credit for the colorfully and odd-looking bull head on the wall, but the tile floor and bench seating just gave a lunchroom vibe. Tables were scratched or dented and menus were all torn / beat-up (think ripped cardboard). Fried Food: The food was ok I guess overall. We got the last razor clams order and they were good, although pricey for the portion size. He doesn't serve shishito peppers anymore as a result of spice level we were told, and the datiles (bacon wrapped dates) were deep fried. That is an interesting twist, but the bacon wasn't crispy as a result and we found the dish to fall flat. Croquetas were also incredibly greasy, and ok. Would give some credit to the pan con tomate, if you order with jamon. Also iced tea was good and only $2.50 with refills! Service: Was fine but seemed rushed at all times. They give you an ipad to remember your items (I guess), since they never use it for relaying to kitchen. Was a bit odd. We were in a back corner somewhat isolated from most of the dining but they were still fairly attentive. I LEFT WANTING TAPAS! Sadly, from boqueria or tertulia. It seems that Jose Andres provided his name to this now chain and walked away. We had 10 plates for three people. The best in order were:flaunts iberico, pimientos, Cordero papas, shrimp, sops pescado, hamburuesa. The soft cheese was also good. The rest was ok. Came here with a colleague and her adult son during a recent business trip. Honestly, the more people that you have in your group, the more fun and more delicious a meal you can experience here. A selection of three wonderful Spanish cheeses, bacon wrapped dates, chorizo wrapped in crispy potato, calamari with squid ink, fried potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce and aioli, garlic shrimp, and garlic chicken just to name a few! Stopped in for happy hour with some friends and had more than a great time. We had excellent and attentive bar service. For drinks, we had Josè's Choice gin & tonics and then a pitcher of sangria. Both were extremely refreshing and light. We ordered a few bites to snack on and the two that stood out was the Gambas A Ajllo (shrimp dish)and Pan De Cristal Con Tomate (warm bread with a fresh tomato spread). I ate here with my girlfriend. The food and drinks: We had the Pan de cristal con tomate as an appetizer, which is bread brushed with tomato. While it was pretty good, it was worth half the cost. We also had the Patatas bravas which was fried potatoes and tomato cause with alioli. It was decent, but not worth the cost. We also had the 'Rossejat' which was paella of toasted pasta with shrimp and calamari. This was definitely interesting, though probably the worst paella I've ever had. Worth a fraction of the price. We also had a glass of sangria which was full of ice. It would have taken nearly 5-10 of these to feel any alcohol. Should have just snuck in a Hi-C instead. Definitely worth just a fraction of the price. The service: The bread was brought out to us mid meal, need I say more? Besides that though, the service was decent. The server was pretty knowledgeable. Overall: everything is overpriced and some things are unsavory, occasionally mediocre, and rarely delicious, I will not come back here even if everything was 50% off. Maybe 75% off. Made it to the restaurant week dinner. Loved the patatas bravas, the stuffed portobello and the flan. We ordered a pitcher separately- The sangria was not too sweet but I've had better. The salmon was well done and came with good flavors/sauce. Loved the shrimps in garlic sauce, although would have loved an accompaniment with it. This was the first of José Andrés restaurants I've been too, and it was incredible. I started with the London Dry Gin & Tonic, which was delicious and had a beautiful presentation. I started with the "Liquid Olive" this was a unique food creation and very tasty. The sautéed cauliflower with dates & olives came next, simultaneously sweet and salty. I ended with vegan paella which was delicious and beautifully presented. If you're vegetarian or vegan you can definitely find some delicious options here! read more
