My sister attempted to order a beef patty with coco bread and cheese and was told, "We don't have cheese because it's dairy and we're vegan." That was confusing, considering the restaurant serves beef, chicken, oxtail, and other non-vegan items. The explanation made no sense and left us wondering whether the staff understood the menu. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the confusion. The dishes lacked the bold, authentic Jamaican flavor I was expecting and tasted bland compared to traditional Jamaican cooking. The seasoning, depth of flavor, and overall execution just weren't there. Between the confusing customer service and underwhelming food, this wasn't the experience I hoped for. Well let's start by saying the food is affordable. I rate it 5 out 10 for flavor and portion. Im a foodie and all about the flavors it's lacking the authentic flavors. They aren't stingy with the rice but they are with the peas. Maybe this is a fusion spot and that's the goal with flavors. I ordered take-out here and thought the food tasted pretty good. I tried the vegan fish ($10) and jerk drumsticks ($12) which tasted flavorful with the sauce that came with it. The rice and veggies were just pure salty but it balanced well with the protein. Only downside was I had also ordered a Shepherds pie, but it was missing in the order. Turns out they had run out of it though it was only 4pm on a Saturday. At least they were nice about offering to make something else. An unlikely find in Orlando....a Jamaican/English fusion restaurant! However, it left a lot to be desired. The ambiance was difficult. The staff weren't welcoming or friendly. I thought this was just their way until a couple of regulars came in. This was when I saw the front staff actually smile and engage with customers. For us, he just would say there were things not on available as he walked by and disappeared to do another task. The decor is in need of renovations as it is dark and grubby in the restaurant. There are menus available, however most of the things we wanted to eat were unavailable and there was no signage indicating that there were missing items or that the menu was limited. On to the food. The vegan chicken was only available in their jerk flavor. The jerk flavor wasn't very jerk tasting. It was very much like an odd barbecue sauce. The sandwich was ok. The coco bread was pleasant, however the sandwich was super dry. It needed more sauce or something to moisten it. There were cucumbers on the sandwich which were fairly large in comparison to the rest of the veggies. The sandwich could've used more tomatoes and the addition of sliced onions would've been welcome. The rice and peas were oddly dry and peppery but needed more flavor and moisture. The hero of the food today were the patties. Flaky, fresh, well seasoned and delicious, the patties are what saved this from being a single star review. If you are looking for a restaurant where you will be welcomed by a warm experience with great food and customer service, this is not the space for you. I've tried several dishes to go because of COVID-19, and always had a huge pile of food ahead of me each time as Jam-Eng is generous with their platter portions. Their brown stew chicken is good, but the jerk chicken with rice+peas and cabbage is what I would recommend. I'm usually hesitant regarding cabbage, but it's a good choice for a side here. The jerk chicken sandwich is another good option when you want to change it up as well. Places like Jam Eng are the reason why I can rarely be bothered to sit in chain restaurants anymore. When you know there are excellent one-offs like this, slinging delicious food via speedy service, and at more than decent prices, why would you go sit in a freaking Chili's for an hour? Absolutely delicious jerk chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage with carrots. I will definitely return for the Sheppard's Pie and jerk shrimp and more. Do not be fooled by outer appearances - the inside is actually quite spacious and airy as the doors remain open. Seating is available inside and outside. NOTE: they are currently hiring and I can see why as they get pretty busy around lunch hour. While Southerners love their BBQ, they also adore their jerk chicken and Jam Eng does it good and tasty.
