I had the worst experience in a salon from which I had high expectations, I wanted a balayage in which they basically gave me the same color that I had before for a value of $355 usd, according to her because of my dark color I must pay 3 sessions to have the brightest color clear. Is it possible to pay almost $1000 usd for a balayage? the assistant burned my head with hot water, trying to comb my hair after washing it was complete torture and on top of that sending the client home with wet hair because according to them that hair drying service is not included, even when I was willing to pay for it. terrible service. Tina, the owner, called me to apologize without offering any other solution, admitting that I have to take 3 sessions, that is, pay almost $1000 USD to be able to have a balayage, and about the "burn issue" she said that she was very sorry that her assistant burned my head, I don't really felt their empathy and offer to meet customer satisfaction. read more

The stylists here have completely transformed how I style and take care of my hair. I first saw AJ who is no longer at the salon and moved on to Raz who obviously is just as great. I came here for a rescue from a long mane of hair that had not been cut in a long time and they did a wonderful job. So good that I came back to have my hair styled for a few weddings and parties and then, finally, my own wedding. They were always happy to experiment with my hair (I trust stylists and never really have any input on what a style should look like for a formal event). I have also used the spa for nails and love their work - fast and friendly but not awkward. I've been going to JAS religiously for about 2.5 years... starting with chopping off my long wedding hair and it's been a wonderful experience every step of the way. From check in to check out, great staff and assistants. Fantastic head massage while you're getting your hair washed. Well kept salon, even when it's super busy in there! Also, Megan is a miracle worker with color... I was always hesitant to do color, but she's really taken me to the next level. I'm a full on blonde now which I never thought could happen! I've been coming to James Anthony for about two years now. Unfortunately I'm moving so I have to leave my amazing stylist Jenna. Before Jenna, I had a stylist I could count on for about 10+ years in NC, but since it's crazy/impractical to fly back for haircuts, I knew I had to find someone in Oak Park! I get pretty nervous about people cutting my hair because Asian hair texture is so different, so i went to Chinatown a few times when I first moved here, but the last time I went I had some weirdly short pieces that stuck straight out of the top of my head! Thank goodness I found Jenna. I started off just trying to get back to the same cut I had before, but soon enough I just asked her what ideas she had. Her custom hair color is also amazing. I'm constantly receiving compliments on my cut and color. She even convinced me to grow out my bangs, which I haven't done in years! As a result of less layers and longer bangs, I can finally curl my bob-length hair! I never thought the day would come that I could do this on my own, but Jenna took the time to show me how. The Experience is also something I always look forward to. On average, I probably get a massage less than once per year because I know each time I come to get my haircut I'll be treated to a relaxing and spa-like experience while getting my hair washed. I have been going to this salon- seeing Tina- for about 20 years. My hair color is constantly being praised by family and strangers alike. I have always been treated with courtesy and professionalism. About a year ago I put my dog down just before my appointment with Tina. I cried for the entire 2hours, and Tina was the best- handed me a box of Kleenex and became a shoulder for me to lean on. You can't find this type of care just anywhere! You haven't lived until you're tried "an experience" from James Anthony. I've been a client for just over 4 years and my hair had never been healthier. Each visit is a learning process, so I can take better care myself and have easier, great hair days. I wish I knew all this decades ago! Usually, I see Victoria for a cut, Raz or Lacy for a blow out and Lauren or Lindsay for color. Destiny gives massages you'll dream about. All the staff are incredible professional, talented and have an ability to make each client look their absolute best. You will be truly be delighted and others, you wouldn't think notice hair, will notice your lovely locks. We host guests who can't believe we offer Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner in our shower, and with seasonal sales it's quite reasonable. Even our puppies have tea tree refreshing spray and shampooch which make their coats silky and continually smelling nice. For a real treat, add on a hair mask or deep conditioning treatment. read more

I had my hair done there yesterday first time client. Had a wonderful experience from shampoo bowl to final cut. I was quite pleased with the end result. I have thin sparse hair but she made it look great I walked out with a smile on my face. I feel bad because I don't remember the stylist that did my hair. But she was great I think she thought I was a nut because I don't like any products on my hair. I'm just a wash an air dry type of person. But she sold me something called purple shampoo which they used while I was there and it gave my gray hair a shine and a look I loved!!! Will definitely be going back!! That was not my experience and I feel like I provided a fair review. I gave praise to 2 members of their team but provided feedback regarding my not so great scheduling experience. Based on the owners response, It looks like my feedback from my personal experience has turned into an internal investigation to try and prove me wrong?I'm not really sure how reviewing camera footage of my arrival proves that the manager didn't mess up an appointment booking that was made over the phone? The logic there does not make sense... The more concerning thing is of the owner's response to my post which which I feel is patronizing and combative. I'm not a business owner, but I would think that the initial reaction when it comes to responding to critical feedback from customers should not be defensive. She picked apart every bit of my review that she didn't agree with to try and "prove" me wrong and then added one sentence at the end stating that if they did miscommunicate they apologize... yikes. Next time, try taking the high road and contact customers directly to resolve issues instead of escalating them online. I love to support small businesses especially during these uncertain times, and I will continue to do so. But I cannot support a business with an owner and manager that I feel let their pride and ego get in the way of resolving such a simple customer service issue. It's baffling and absurd... read more

I went to get a haircut from Claudia and halfway through it she told me how much she hates the hairstyle i'm getting, and how it disgusts her. My first visit today was fantastic. The front desk staff were friendly and welcoming. There is a sign that had the names of all first time clients. Very nice touch. My appointment was with Tina for just a root touch up as my regular stylist at another salon could not accommodate my schedule. She matched my color perfectly. The shampoo room is an experience like none I'd had before. Then Tina and one of the assistants both did my blow dry. She explained the products used, but did not pressure any purchase. Run, don't walk, to get your color done by Stephanie. My hair is incredible with multifaceted color and I get compliments all the time. It's strong and healthy too despite regular coloring. They also now have Dazzle Dry manicures which Last so long but aren't thick and heavy and nail destroying like a no chip-it's vegan polish! Love this place! So, my husband turned me on to this salon and so glad he did. Let's start with the hair wash - best experience! Very quiet and zen like with great relaxing music, but the best is the scalp and shoulder massage! The whole thing lasts about 10 minutes. I could sit there all day!!! As for my cut - love my stylist Lacey. I have curly, crazy hair and she does a great job. Very precise. This past week I was asking her if I should start coloring my hair (starting the see more grays than I want to). Instead of pushing me to get it colored, which I really didn't want to do, she suggested a tinted conditioner that she mixed to match my color. It works awesome! And it was $30 and will probably last me 18 months. Prices are very reasonable and on par with other salons. Love James Anthony! read more

I'm biracial (black and white). I get tons of questions about it but mostly: "Do you have white people hair or black people hair?" Um... I don't know. It's long, fine and curly (but usually appears to be wavy). "Well, what sort of salon do you go to?" With the exception of a few Groupon deals, a wedding detour to Mario Tricoci in downtown Chicago, Team Blonde in Forest Park, and an Egyptian place, I've gone exclusively James Anthony Salon for over ten years. I love them! Jenna has been my stylist for most of that time and my only complaint is her success! She was recently promoted to Master Stylist and her rates went up. In some ways Jenna and I have opposite hair. Hers is thick (some might say course) strands of straight hair. Both of our hair can be challenging to control and need lots of moisture. I love the way Jenna listens to me. Every time I go to other salons I tell them that I almost always wear my hair in a single braid so it's important for it to be cut in a straight line so that there aren't odd ends poking out. Stylists at other salons never seem to listen to me. They see curly hair and they want to thin it out and cut layers. Jenna takes it a step further and straightens my hair before cutting it to make sure that all of the ends are the same length. I've seen a couple other stylists when Jenna wasn't available and they've been awesome too. What I like about them is that I've seen many of them as Rising Stars who later became stylists. A Rising Star is someone who's already gone to beauty school and is proving themselves first. They're knowledgeable and eager to help. I greatly appreciate that everybody at James Anthony Salon is committed to on-going education and measured results. The icing on the cake is "The Experience" at James Anthony. "The Experience" is the shampoo, shoulder massage and (sometimes) aroma therapy. It takes place in a dimly lit room with soothing music. It's amazing and definitely sets James Anthony Salon apart from the rest. Anyway, I wanted to write a new review of James Anthony Salon because I understand the special challenges of having curly hair and I feel well cared for at this place. Furthermore, I never see other clients of color at this place, but I know that they're welcome and would love it as much as I do. Lastly, I love the nail technicians at James Anthony - particularly Stella. She is such a dear. I never get my nails done, but I went to Stella every week for about a month before my wedding. I knew that my nails would need time to grow and have some TLC in order to be in wedding shape. Stella (at no extra charge) massages my hands and forearms and wraps them in warm towels. I walked n with a full head of soft, feminine curls, said I wanted a soft, layered, tapered cut. She took INCHES off my hair, she cut the back and sides so short I look like a man. I am crushed and mortified, it will take two months before my hair looks normal again. I'm ashamed to go out in public looking like this. Made a last minute appointment the day of for a Sunday afternoon trim since most other salons in the area were closed on Sundays. I was about 15 minutes early for my appointment and expected to wait, but I was only sitting there a moment or two before my stylist came to introduce herself and take me back. Mia, my stylist, was great. I have long hair and only wanted a trim, but during the cut she noticed that I had a face of fear when I thought she had gone too short. She picked up on my body language and immediately reassured me that it was not as short as I thought. I appreciate that she was so attentive throughout the cut and the end product was much better than I had expected. Completely trust Mia and I will be returning to see her there again! I do recommend browsing their travel size basket for products as most of the expensive regular size bottles of product (which are pricey) can be found in mini, much less expensive bottle. At least this way you can try the products out for a little while, making sure you like them before spending a lot of money on the full size. read more

It took me years to find a salon that had both great service and would LISTEN to and do what I actually wanted instead of getting crazy scissor happy on my long, boring hair. I finally found this hidden gem near my old college. Simply put, Jenna is AWESOME and knows what she's doing. I'm not a big fan of their color services, but I have never walked out dissatisfied with a haircut. The entire staff is professional, friendly, and cool. They will offer their input but ultimately listen to what the client wants, and this is something many other salons could learn from.. I don't even care that they mention Paul Mitchell every fifteen minutes. The products are quality. Minus one star because I was never too impressed with their spa services. I went to this salon for a year before deciding to go somewhere closer to home (and a bit cheaper). The service has always been very good with the exception of the Asian girl who works at the front desk. Dumb as a rock. (Best moment was when she told me to wait because "We weren't expecting you for another 6 minutes" and then forgot about me. 20 minutes later, I made eye contact with the other receptionist and heard her whisper something to the first one. She came around and said, "Have you checked in?" What?? I told her that I had checked in with her and she had told me to wait. She looked confused, disappeared for a sec, and then came back and brought me back to get my hair washed. Wasted a lot of my time.) I'll miss the "Lather Lounge Experience," I looked forward to that more than the haircut! My stylist (Erika) assessed my hair like a doctor would, seriously, she came up with the cause for my styling issue, a plan of care, and an estimated time it would take! My hair was always cut very nice. I have medium-long hair of normal texture and it cost me $50. One thing I didn't appreciate was the sales pitch at the end of every. single. haircut. I don't want to have to explain that I don't need more styling products everytime I come in. I took a break from going to them because when you're in college with a job that pays minimum wage and you have a car payment, you can't really afford it. Now that I'm financially stable, I treat my locks to some TLC and head to James Anthony where Mandy the Magician does wonders with my hair. I took the dive and had her cut about 6 inches off my hair and give me a new style that I am very happy with. What I love about her is that if she doesn't think it will look right on me, she'll tell me. She doesn't tell me what I want to hear, she offers me her opinion and, frankly, who am I not to trust the one that actually went to school for this stuff?? The massage therapist gets 5 stars - great massage & great price! But I have to take a star for the pricing of some of the other treatments, since this review goes to the whole salon. $60 for a pedi is just ridiculous. Thankfully, deals are sometimes posted on their facebook page. As for the massage, I was lucky enough to get a last minute appointment with Nicole the other night. I had had a horrible headache all day, and she did something with my sinuses that made it all go away! When I left, I could turn my head again and my shoulders and back just felt sooo much better! This is revised from 10/6/2012 - I'm still very frustrated and disappointed with this salon, and I would like the Yelp world to know why. The staff's personalities here are great! Michelle was my stylist when I needed something new for my hair. My haircut looked great, especially the Victoria's Secret waves that Michelle styled it into, and immediately made another appointment 6 weeks down the road. That second appointment made me think... WHAT JUST HAPPENED? My appointment was a little later in the day, and included color. Everything was fine until after I had my hair washed. As I sat in the chair, getting my hair cut, my stylist was pulled away to another customer (with many apologies) and what I assume to be a stylist-in-training took care of my hair by blow-drying. Except in this case, care means frying the living bejeezus out of my hair, consistently getting too close to my scalp and burning me a few times. At this point, I'm already getting frustrated and impatient and my relaxing salon day was pretty much ruined. When my stylist came back, she had to convene with another stylist about my hair color, as it didn't come out right. That's not really a problem, no one can predict how a chemical can work on a particular hair color/texture/what have you. I've never been trendy with my hair, and I wanted so badly to have that really cute ombre look I've been seeing all over Pinterest. She let me know that it'll take a day for the color to really come out, so I took her word for it and paid nearly $300 for my hair. What a waste of my hard-earned money. My color was a half-effort ombre, with maybe an inch of my roots showing. I looked like I was growing out a bad blonde hair color rather than having an ombre look. The products they suggested for me were fine in the shower, but the moment my hair was dry, I could see all the hair she missed that had split ends. The frizz and the split ends forced me to wear my hair up every day from that day forth. I had a stylist friend (recently graduated from beauty school) fix my hair because I was tired of being so frustrated with it everyday. This is what she told me: Paul Mitchell products have a lot of sodium in them, and that's what's causing my hair to dry out like crazy. My color was more color blocks than it was ombre, and my layers were absolutely, positively uneven. For $50, my friend fixed my hair color, shape, and cut and it looks better than ever. The light fixture in the center is beautifully lit and it's dimmed light enough to be completely relaxed while getting a nice scalp message. Hey the haircut and color was nice too!
