This is truly a lovely homy place and we enjoyed everything at James' place. Will definitely come back if we visit Springfield again. We were on a trip home after watching the eclipse and decided to have a meal here. That was the best decision ever! The food was great. We had the Korean style ribs and the Texas brisket, and tried the Pow-wow pulled pork, all of them were delicious and highly recommended. Wish we had room for more. Pricey but decent portions. Sides are small unless you get the fried Mac n cheese balls!! Be careful thought, we understood you could sub those for 2 sides...instead they charged us nearly $6 extra and still paid full price for main dinner without sides. How nice are the owners, huh? I called in a to-go order and I got the brisket, some wings and I believe it was a number two. Whatever it was it was delicious. The owners were really helpful over the phone and extremely pleasant in person. Once I arrived to pick up my order, the staff brought my order out from the kitchen. They showed me my food to confirm that my order was correct, which it was. I was not the biggest fan of the brisket because it was kind of fatty. Whatever the number two was, some sweet chili chicken, it was wonderful but the main star of the show were those wings. They were heavenly. Like no wing I've had before. Serious folks doing amazing things with food. The menu is limited and thats ok, i know that what i order is going to be hot, tasty, and prepared exactly the way it is described. James and his lovely wife do an amazing job at making you feel like friends everytime we stop in. Listen folks you have to try the Honey Spiced Chicken and the Beef Bogogi. Rather than just making me another one they tried to give me something else, some beef dish and I rarely eat beef so that was unacceptable for me. Unlike any other restaurant I have been to. You may come for the good food, but you stay because Of the warm hospitality of Chef James and his wife who run this mom and pop restaurant. My favorites here are the honey spicy chicken and the chicken wings. They give a free crab Rangoon and small chicken wing appetizer with every meal. That's because I truly did feel like I was eating at a long time friends house! It was a slower night due to it being Halloween. Not only did James himself spend time just chatting with me (dining alone) but when he learned about my love for BBQ he went into specific detail about how he makes his brisket. Who does that?! He also told me a little bit about his Taiwanese / Texas heritage that made my first question possible. I learned that at 56 years old this is James's first restaurant and he still works a full time day job. Where in the world does he find the energy? I got an answer to that too... Passion. He truly loves what he does and it shows. I had questions on the Pork Belly and Mustard Greens and even though I ordered something else, he brought me a sample to insist I try it as it was his mother's recipe and he still sources the greens from Taiwan for an unduplicatable authentic taste. But you deserve the best. James will come out and talk to each table take a gander to what you're looking for and then make the food. By gauging what each person at the table wants he can cater the tastes if so desired and determine what each person would like. If you want authenticate Taiwanese beef noodle soup you can find it here. His wife also makes egg rolls by hand, there's a limited number each night and it's never frozen. We had to try this place a couple times before reviewing. Hands down, great place to eat. Highly recommend the steamed fish, but give them a minimum 20 minutes heads up. They need to to prepare. The fish is to die for. I also recommend the brisket. Takes James minimum 10 hours to make and you don't need a knife. Nothing is artificial or comes from a can or box. As a traveling doctor, when I venture out from Mattoon to Quincy, I will typically stop in Springfield for dinner. What a blessing that I landed on this diamond of a restaurant! It was an incredible experience from start to finish. Upon entering the door, I was immediately greeted by a smiling chef in an apron and was swiftly seated at a table of my choosing. The interior was clean, warm, and inviting with wood accents. Chef James delicately illustrated his menu with a detailed description of the particulars of how he prepares his food. I felt like Guy Ferretti interviewing a chef on DDD and was finding it difficult to contain my salivary glands as everything sounded amazing. I first enjoyed the crab rangoon/chicken wing appetizer that came with your meal. The crab rangoon had a crisp tasty shell with sweet creamy interior but the sweet and savory sesame BBQ sauce on the chicken wing was tantalizing. I was next introduced to the house made egg roll that contained crisp freshly chopped cabbage, real scrambled egg, and thinly sliced pork tenderloin. What a delight! Best egg roll that I have ever enjoyed. For my entrée, I was treated to the Bulgogi Beef. The Angus flank steak was marinated to perfection and the tenderness was incredible! The combination of sautéed onions, green onions, and red chili peppers delivered the right amount of heat and sweetness. A generous helping of perfectly-cooked basmati rice and crispy white noodles accompanied the dish. I savored every bite and took almost half home. I also wanted to mention that I was served water with crushed ice and infused with fresh fruit. The taste was subtle and I really appreciated not having to drink plain tap water with my meal. Chef James has created an amazing experience and I am blessed to have enjoyed my first but definitely not last meal at his kitchen. Very interesting place, James is a very kind inviting person who explained everything about the menu and restaurant. The chicken wing and crab Rangoon you get with your entree were really good. We ordered egg rolls, #1 and #2 a chicken and a beef dish, unfortunately I didn't like the same texture of the sauces that was on our chicken wing and both these dishes.
