wow.... if you haven't tried this place yet you're missing out!! Different than most Asian restaurants in Springfield. Pot stickers were AMAZING and honey spicy chicken was so good too!! Lightly breaded so it wasn't really heavy- perfect. Everything is cooked FRESH To top it off, the Chef went over all the food I ordered and made sure everything was right and perfect (I got it to go). He even added the tasty wings they have. He said "let me know if there's anything wrong". I have NEVER heard an owner of a restaurant tell me that!! Good hospitality definitely makes the food taste better(; Thanks Chef!!! Excellent local new restaurant you need to try! Food was amazing - cooked to order and well worth a short wait. Crab Rangoon and chicken wing with every meal. Fried chicken dinner was awesome and gluten free. Honey spicy chicken with rice was tasty and enough that I took some home. Very nice remodel - clean and fresh inside. Decided to check this place out with my partner, and was very pleasantly surprised! The food was absolutely delicious -- I never thought I would be so impressed with egg rolls, but they were incredible! The egg rolls and the crab rangoon are made in the restaurant, and are leagues apart from what you'd be served at a typical Chinese takeout place. Definitely give both a try! I got the "bulgogi," which really seems to be more of a Mongolian beef dish rather than Korean BBQ, and it was wonderfully delicious. Portion sizes are quite generous as well. The interior is a bit odd and kind of feels like a church; the lighting is a little excessive (at least in my restaurant ambience lighting preferences), but the food more than makes up for it. Also, the couple who own this place also serve the food, and the husband comes around to chat with people and make sure everything tastes good -- both of them were very friendly and pleasant. I love when Springfield gets new, locally owned restaurants and always like to try them out. I'll also give local-owned places a break when they first open. After all it takes awhile to get staff and cooks trained. That said I would highly suggest not going to James' Homestyle Restaurant on Chatham. If the 1 hr 50 mins wait to get our food wasnt bad enough with 3 kids, each plate came out 10 mins apart... The kids chicken fingers the last. They had run out of fries so gave them rice. And while I am patient for amazing food, this was sub par. It was very disappointing. And while the staff did apologize for the huge delay it can't make up for the entirely bad experience. read more

On our second visit, we called to bring a party a of 8 in 10 minutes- no hassle. We were warmly greeted, amazing service by James and his wife, exceptional quality of ingredients, homemade dumplings, crisp crab Rangoon, wings in a sweet sesame sauce, huge butterfly Panko encrusted shrimp with a fusion horseradish sauce, brisket, slow cooked for 11 hours dry rubbed with mustard plus tons of spice, beef and ginger all served with Taiwanese beer, draft Sam Adams seasonal, whole leaf Taiwanese oolong tea in big cups, did I mention the ribs again? Man they were amazing! James adjusted portions to fit our party perfectly. And one of the surprises was the basmati fried rice with cabbage, egg, scallions and a bit of pork. This place is a Springfield gem. The food is amazing. Each entree comes with one crab Rangoon and a chicken wing. Juuust enough to tease you. The wings are delicious. The ratio of the wonton wrapper (I think) to the filling of the crab Rangoon is PERFECT. You must try the bulgogi beef and the honey spicy chicken - delicious. The chef also let us sample some pork belly. SO GOOD. Not only will the food bring me back but the outstanding customer service will too. Chef James is passionate about his food. James homestyle bbq is actually the best food I've ever tasted in my entire life. I found myself passing through Springfield on a fine Friday night, and I just happened to notice James home kitchen. What a dime piece! their complementary egg roll really suits my fancy. in my opinion, their chicken and rice could be cooked just a tad bit longer, but thats just my opinion. All in all, James is GOD TIER. I LOVE this place! We went there with friends a couple of weeks ago and were completely blown over by the atmosphere, the staff and the food! I had the chicken dish (wish I could remember its name, but it's No. 2 on the menu) - all white meat, virtually no coating, and a fantastically tasty sauce - not too spicy, not too sweet. Wonderful Basmati rice. My husband had the brisket - yes James Home Kitchen serves Korean, Taiwan, and TEXAS BBQ. James came out and explained the entire menu to us and then returned to make sure we liked it and had everything we needed. My friend had the dumplings - stuffed to bursting with his own filling, made in house. Her husband had the pork tenderloin. His plate, along with my husband's was practically licked clean. I was anxious to try this restaurant as it had received good reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was not the same. We arrived around 7PM. They were not full; about seven tables already seated most already with their meals. My party and I we greet and seated fairly quickly but it took several minutes for someone to take our drink order and several more minutes for some to return to take our dinner order. The menu is very limited. I ordered the smoked beef brisket with mashed potatoes and broccoli for, I believe, $14.99. Another 15 minutes after taking our order we each received a small plate with a sesame chicken wing and a crab Rangoon. These items were actually hit a quite good. We were assured several times our meals should be out shortly but, it took more than an hour to receive our food. As the plates arrived we were in formed that they were out of mashed potatoes and instead of offering us options for substitutions we were given French fries. The beef brisket is just strips of beef that seemed to have been heated in oil and some smoked seasoning and the beef was very tough to cut and chewy. The best part of the meal was the steamed broccoli. Others in my party ordered chicken with vegetables and another brisket. No one was satisfied with their meals. The chicken and vegetables were described as very bland and the other brisket was the same as mine, oily and tough. It was a $50 lesson and I will not be back. read more

We were greeted and seated by James who asked if it was our first time and then proceeded to tell us about himself and the restaurant. He took the time to walk us thru the menu. His passion for cooking was evident. The food was outstanding. The homemade egg rolls were great. Very interesting combination of authentic Texas BBQ and Asian fusion. Go to this restaurant! The chef/owner is passionate about Taiwanese cuisine and it comes through in every dish. The preparation that goes into each dish is extensive and the flavors and textures are complex, but also homey and accessible. Plus, forget what you know about egg rolls and try these. The menu isn't huge and there's some things that could be improved on (menu format) but the service was so amazing and the food came out very quickly. An appetizer of a crab Rangoon, an egg roll and wing (which I don't normally like but was super delicious) for $2.50 blows my mind; great quality food and cheaper than Panda Express. If you have any questions the chef is always willing to talk and the people who run this restaurant are so nice. I got the Honey Spicy Chicken, amazing and a better quality rice than most Asian places in Springfield. The wine pour was also very generous and a good wine for the price. My family got the beef bulgogi and the chicken veggie dish, both very good. Tried the wife and kids plates as well and was disappointed with nothing. Next time we will try the bbq. The only thing is, don't go if you are in a hurry. We were not so I didn't care that it took a while. Even though service was a tad slow the food was so good (and tasted fresh) that I am still giving it 5 stars. Wow!!! Previous Yelp reviewers definitely pointed us in the right direction! James. the Chef, and his lovely wife made us feel like family immediately. Our experience on the evening of Black Friday was extra special because for the first hour that we were there we were the only guests. Everyone was out shopping and started flocking in to enjoy the delicious food. My husband ordered the steamed fish which happened to be flounder. Truly "a melt in your mouth experience," he said. I had the honey spice chicken and was equally impressed by this flavorful delight. Before the entrees we devoured the chicken wing and crab Rangoon appetizer. We were also treated to freaky made pot stickers which were a first for me. They were so yummy. We also enjoyed two hand rolled egg rolls that were the best EVER!!! When James' wife heard we were traveling to Branson MO the next day she packed us up some fresh oranges and plums to take with us. What a blessing this couple is!!! We are definitely going out of our way on our return trip just to stop in for another meal and reconnect with our new brother & sister! read more
