I have been here several times. Well Valentine's Day we have a tradition I go out with my boys and the hubby takes out our daughter. We came to James Joyce because the boys wanted broccoli popper and wings. To start I had to go ask someone to come to our table as I was watching them talking behind the bar. I ordered a glass of wine which the glass was dirty with lipstick on it!!! I asked for a new glass and she Poured the same wine into a different glass so again I got up to ask for all new one all together. There is no one here but the service is as slow as can be and the waitress is not attentive at all!! My sons burger was a hockey puck that he couldn't even eat it!!!! I asked for a grilled cheese and that even took 15mins as he was crying because he was starving. I asked for the bill and was ignored I had to get up and go to the hostess to pay. AVOID!! There's so many places in patchogue that won't charge you for items you didn't get!! I want to start this off by saying I've been to this place many times pre COVID, ans have never had any complaints. Because of that and the fact that the food is actually decent, I'm giving this two stars. So I came with a group of 5 people, and we were there for a good time. We had all ordered food, and plenty of drinks. My one complaint about the food was that we ordered 3 pretzels, one plate of wings and a poutine, and one of the pretzels came out ice cold. We told the waitress and they fixed it right away. We each had a bunch of drinks throughout the night and probably spent a total of 6-7 hours here. The bill came, and to make it easier instead of splitting the bill right there, I just gave my card and would Venmo everyone later(like the tru millennial I am lol) Well I'm mad at myself because the next morning when I looked at the recent we were charged for almost $100 more than we ordered. There were random food orders that weren't even ordered, and drinks that we didn't order. I wanted to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt, so I called and explained the situation. They said I hs to email them so the manager could get back to me. Okay perfect. So I emailed and the following day I was emailed that they were looking into. I figured they would check security cameras to make sure they could check I was telling the truth(I'm not dumb, I know a business isn't just going to refund $100 because I said I didn't get items) and I gave them a few days. After a few days of silence, I emailed again. No response for 2 days and then I was again replied to saying it was being looked into. Again a few more days goes by and at this point it's been a week since I was overcharged. So I called and was told the manager was in a meeting but that she would be out in an hour and I could call back. So I called back in 90 minutes and was told that the manager was too busy because the restaurant was busy. I said that I gave them a chance to rectify but at this point I needed to reach out to my credit card company to dispute the charges as I gave a week and no one could give me answers. The hostess advised me that it was probably best that I do that.. which leads me to believe that they are continually doing this and she was trying to let me know I wouldn't get my money back. The following day I was emailed by the manager who said they would credit me... it was $20 less than what I was disputing but at that point I just wanted any of it back. She told me to call so she could run my card for the credit. When I called, the manager was extremely cold, never apologized, and didn't even acknowledge the fact that I was calling for an issue. Just said card #? Ok I'll run and you'll see the credit bye. Overall really disappointed in my experience because I really thought I found a place I liked. There's so many other places in patchogue. Don't pay in big bills the bartenders will steal your money. The very first round I bought I paid with a $100 bill and the bartender pretended she never served me as soon as I got the drinks and then threatened to call the bouncer while my money was sticking out of her pocket. This has happened to multiple people and the bartenders will continue to do it knowing if you ask for your money back they can just call the bouncers to kick you out. read more

James Joyce has a real problem. I was out last night with friends having a good time minding my own business and when the night was coming to an end, I was on my way out the front door when a bouncer physically removed me from the bar. He grabbed me and dragged me through the bar and out the back door when I was already by the front door. Pushing and shoving me the entire way. No warning. No reason. This is the first time it has happened to me, but it is definitely a recurring theme. I have heard multiple instances where bouncers, specifically at James Joyce on weekends, used physical force to remove patrons. The only way a bouncer should ever physically put their hands on a paying customer is if there is a physical altercation they are trying to deescalate. There was absolutely NO reason why that bouncer should of ever put his hands on me. In the process of being physically removed, my phone screen was damaged to a point where it was difficult to use. Completely unacceptable. When I asked why I was being removed, they had no answer. If I was a manager at James Joyce, I would be completely embarrassed. The way they run their bar and manage their security staff is horrible. I wonder how hard they looked into their security staff before hiring them. I can't imagine it was thorough. As a bar, you would think that would be an important thing to get right. Anyone that took an intro business class in school would know that. I guess they think otherwise. Short bouncer with the patchy beard definitely let's the "power" of being a bouncer at a subpar bar on Long Island get to his head. Didn't let my friend in because his pull over had a hood. Then when we left and came back with a jacket for him, he didn't let me in because my jeans had 3 rips in them after I had gotten in the first time. Disappointing. read more

I have had the bar food and the sandwiches and they are all awesome I highly recommend this place if you are in town. Last night we had dinner at James Joyce in Patchogue. Sorry to say it was a bad experience. We had reservations for a table for four. They put us in the upstairs area at a table that was in the middle of two other tables. Not social distanced at all. The table behind us had nobody sitting at it, so we stayed. Two out of the four drinks we ordered were incorrectly made. One of us got the French Onion soup and it was inedible due to the salt content. As we were finishing our apps, the table next to us arrived. Party of 12 young kids. (The signs on the doors all state no parties over 10). They were literally back to back with us, chairs touching. The wait staff could not walk between the back to back chairs because they were practically touching. We asked to be switched to a different table and they told us we could move to a vacant table, but that party was arriving in a half hour and they would have to move us again. We spoke with the manager who was actually kind of snippy. We explained that after they sat that large group, there was no longer any kind of distance between our tables. She said, "I'm not going to argue with you." We were not argumentative at all. Our complaint was legit and she made it worse by being combative with us. At that point we just asked for our check and passed on dinner. Will not be back. Will add that our waitress was very nice, and we kind of felt bad because you could tell by her eyes that she knew. read more

Worst dining experience ever. Arrived at 5:00 on Sunday 9/3 and the place was empty. At 5:30 the music was turned up so loud that I could not have a conversation with any of my guests. I asked the server if the volume could be turned down. He said ok and it never happened. I asked a second time he said ok and it never happened. I went to the bar and asked to see the manager and was told that there was no manager there. I asked the bartender to lower the volume, he said ok and it never happened. My party of six was miserable with the lack of concern for a customer so I told the server to take our dinners and shove it and we all left without eating. The lack of concern for a customer trying to enjoy dinner with relatives was appalling and completely not acceptable. I will never return to this place and will tell this story to all of my friends and relatives. I hope that they enjoyed dumping the six meals that we left behind. read more

Can only speak for the nightlife here as I haven't been for food, but cool spot for a Saturday night! The interior is beautiful with high ceilings, loft areas at the front and the back of the space, and large lighting structures with hanging Edison lights. DJ was great- not obnoxious and played a wide selection of music that wasn't overly loud. The place is massive, so even when it is crowded, you have space. Decent beer selection, but really slow and inattentive bartenders. read more

Both times my mashed potatoes were cold and dry. And there were only two vegetable choices: broccoli and brussel sprouts, which were both undercooked. Beautiful ambience, mediocre food The greatest thing about this place is the decor. The art work of James Joyce is spectacular. In full confession, I am a vegetarian of Irish descent. That said I don't go to Irish pubs expecting more than fries. They have one option only "The Impossibly Vegan " burger. Yuk. It is exactly what meat eaters think vegetarians want , a chewy, greasy hunk of something that was supposed to be meat. Like i said, I get it. It's not designed for vegetarians. Glacial service and an uninspired menu. Waited 20 minutes for a table on a Monday night. OK, hostess was pleasant and seemed on top of things. Took 10 minutes for a waiter to appear. Then another 15 to reappear with drinks. Eventually came back and took our order. We ordered an appetizer and our meals at the same time. The appetizer was brought out by someone other than our waiter (kitchen staff? manager?) and the waited was still MIA. Drinks were empty by this time. Appetizer finished, cleared by waiter, no offer to refill drinks. Dinner appears courtesy of the same person other than our waiter. Still no sign of waiter or drink refills. Nearly done with dinner, waiter appears asking if we'd like refills. The meal was OK, but nothing to write home about. The staff needs to get their act together because the level of service is quite poor. Won't be going back. Many other good choices nearby in Patchogue. read more

James Joyce bouncers are ridiculous. Tonight I (a male) was denied entry because I was wearing ripped jeans, mind you there were 2 "rips" in my jeans and they were for design purposes only and you couldn't see any actual skin. Myself and my girlfriend were in a big group and my girlfriend got her bag checked and entered before me. She did not realize i got denied until a few minutes later when another friend of ours made her aware of the situation. So my girlfriend walked outside to ask the bouncer (who was checking bags) what the rules were for attire/ripped jeans and asked if women were only allowed in ripped jeans because clearly there were multiple individuals inside the establishment already wearing ripped jeans. She made sure to wait to ask this question until after the bouncer who was checking IDs was having an issue with someone else and was discussing the issue with the bouncer checking the bags. The bouncer who was checking bags replied telling her that "men aren't allowed to wear ripped jeans"....which is very strange considering previous comments on this app have management stating rules needed be followed by "everyone", so what does the word "everyone" actually mean? Anyways, she was clearly disappointed with that response and replied with "that stinks and is a little unfair, now I have to figure out what to do". The bouncer replied in some variation of "I understand it puts you in tough spot but are you going to waste your time here looking for him and complaining about it and be in our way, or are you going to go back inside?"...immediately the Boucher proceeded to repeat himself while moving towards her and she couldn't get a word in other then saying "it was just a question, sorry"....again she couldn't get any other words in but this cause he started to continually repeat the same sentence. He then put his hand on her arm and shoved her towards the exit while they continued to exchange words. If being asked a question on rules is that problematic for that bouncer where he feels the need to put his hand on a women who is literally just talking to him, maybe he shouldn't be at the door. Turning away someone for ripped jeans but letting others in with ripped jeans is an issue on your end as an establishment as well. read more

I came here on a Saturday night. It was extremely loud and crowded which isn't really surprising given the day/time. It took about 10 minutes for our party of 4 to be seated. I was almost surprised we got seated rather quickly however once we were led to our table, I understood why. It seems like they threw an extra table in wherever they could fit it (I.e. right in front of the kitchen). I'm not talking off to the side or just nearby, but literally right in front of the doors. It really was an extremely poor location and that pretty much set the tone for the night. We ordered cocktails which weren't impressive and we were also collectively disappointed by the lack of irish incorporated into the menus. I think there was like two whiskey options on the drink menu. I ordered a dinner plate which clearly says it comes with a potato and vegetable but then I was informed that my dinner doesn't come with any sides even though this wasn't noted anywhere. I got a chicken pot pie and it was okay but not impressive for $20. Overall I was really disappointed since I had heard a lot of good things about this place. We were all ready to eat and drink, some were interested in the numerous specials some were on there own. Theses bartenders could not be bothered with the 15 hungry thirsty group in the corner. I was at a table of 14 people for brunch. Heather our server was amazing and could not have been more courteous to the group. The brunch states on website 2hrs bottomless mimosas and we sat at table waiting over an hour for food and then was told that the brunch special ends at 2pm. No where on the website does it state that and when I spoke to the Manager Stephanie who was down right disrespectful and rude and insulted me. Basically said she doesn't care what site reads it ends at 2pm. At this point we still dont have food and now she just ruined the mood at the table. Food was horrible and felt very uncomfortable being here. i would never give to this establishment again. You should have mangers on your staff that know how to deal with customers in a polite way. Came in on a Sunday night around 6:30 and it was surprisingly, pretty empty. They have decent tap and cocktail selection which I liked. I had the wings and a chopped salad which were as okay as a chopped iceberg salad and fried wings could be. I like my wings with a little more meat on them than what I was served, these were on the smaller side. My partner got the fried chicken sandwich with fries. Unfortunately she had to send her meal back as the chicken was ice cold in the center (seems as if they do a massive cook of them early in the day and then just fry them to heat them up when served). The fries were also cold and soggy, indicating those too were not cooked enough. Her meal also came out much later than mine even though we indicated we'd like everything served at once, she ended up opting to not have a replacement sandwich sent out. (The meal was bad enough that she opted to leave hungry). Other than the food our waitress was very polite, apologetic and attentive. I was really looking forward to trying this place but I'm not sure we'll be back anytime soon. read more

Clearly went on an "off" night. Great service from the bartenders, but dirty glassware turned us off a bit. The bar had sticky red, (maybe grenadine?) all over it. Stayed for dinner and the filet sandwich was not good. Steak was rubbery and not seared, slightly over cooked. We come here often. Matt and Zack are phenomenal bartenders. Very attentitive. Recently we have been coming dofferent days to find two female bartenders, Lauren and Nadine. Lauren is also very attentive and holds up to standards of a bar scene. The same does not go for Nadine. She is the polar opposite of everyone else we have encountered here. She is very spacey and inattentive. She often leaves us waiting for more than 10mins aftwr placing drink orders. One time we arrived to find only Nadine she did not acknowledge us for over 10mins and the bar was empty. Lauren came on shift and helped out right away. And turned what had started off as a poor service night into a night that got us to come back. If you ask me one bartender can leave a bad taste and to be honest if we see only her working we walk out. Management should be looking at the staff more closely. read more

Been here 3 times, And for what it's worth here's my evaluation. 1) Decor and size of place is outstanding. Music great! #2 Had one appetizer one night & two meals the other occasions. Food is great! 3) Would of given 5 stars but Bartender Felecia is horrid! Plan on waiting an excessive amount of time if she's working. Completely oblivious to customers at bar, spends all her time in the corner by the kitchen entry just chatting with other staff. You mean to tell me the manager hasn't noticed this? Now on a better note bartender Nicole, is so on point, Very welcoming, attentive and watchful of when a drink is empty etc etc. girl is wiping off the bar between serving, wiping off bottles etc. Better hope I never open a bar because first thing I'd do is come in there to offer her a job at my place lol. Great decor but not Irish by any means (dozens of Jameson Bottles behind the bar and a mural of James Joyce does not cut it.) 2nd visit. 1st was good considering recent opening and working out kinks. Was planing on returning to try Dinner. Not now! Had beer and appetizer at bar. 4 - 5 bartenders, light traffic. My empty pint glass sat on bar in front of me for at least 30 min. A bartender cleared my appetizer plate and 2 bartenders mixed drinks right in front of me and no offer to re-fill. No Thank-you when I paid tab. Never got another beer. No excuse for this type of dis-service. When are managers/owners going to instruct servers that we have many choices (especially in Patchogue) and there is no reason for us to give repeated tries after sub-standard fare or especially service. 1 maybe 2 tries and you've lost a customer if you don't at least try to do it right. read more

Now yes I understand this is covid time but my friend was harmless following what the other people doing. I thought this was a great place to be at but do not go here if you want to have fun. Probably the most spectacular addition to the restaurant scene on Long Island in many years. This cavernous gem with 25 foot ceilings and two party balconies, happens to have some of the best artwork displayed in what will inevitably be a landmark for generations. Long Island has been waiting for this. Something above and way beyond the ordinary. This is literally Europe at it's best in Patchogue. From the decor to the amazing food, to the outstanding drink selections, but most importantly for that magic that very few can create - the atmosphere. Go there any night and I challenge you to find anything that beats it. Plus, they just got recognized for being at the forefront of the "going green" revolution, and on top of everything else, the owners from Ireland are just good hard working guys. What more could you ask for :) ( PS; I just saw some of the negative reviews mentioning bias. The only explanation is that there was some misunderstanding there. I know these guys for decades and anyone who knows them knows they are the most unbiased and welcoming guys you will ever meet to EVERYONE. Literally. If you feel wronged, give them the opportunity to make it right. Go back and have a conversation. You will be very surprised. And I bet, you will leave with a friend for life ) read more
