Another great find, thanks to Yelp! What a cool place... It's like an old log cabin, complete with a giant moose head on the wall. The food is excellent & the portions are absolutely massive! Seriously, share something! I can eat a lot and I barely finished half of my breakfast burrito and didn't even get to the re-fried beans. I was really impressed when we were seated that a plastic plate of finely sliced melon arrived at the table for our toddler immediately. They really know how to impress parents & keep toddlers happy ;-) I ordered a peppermint mocha coffee drink, which I had to remind the server I ordered after waiting 10 minutes. Luckily it was awesome so that made up for it almost getting forgotten by our server. It was also HUGE! I only drank about half of it. As I said, I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon, eggs, & cheese... It was heavenly & massive! The salsa to dip it in was delicious as well. Unfortunately, the server forgot our toddler's food & the milk I ordered for her... It was late enough in the meal I just decided to forget about getting her the milk & asked another server to check on her food. The original server ended up bringing out her food after another server brought it out 1st. So who knows what the heck happened there. My husband ordered the pancakes which again, were massive! He could only finish 1 1/2 of the 3. He said they were delicious. So, I would give this place 5 stars for food, but since we had some issues with the service, I thought 4 stars was more fitting. Very good cafe with good portions and I really like the cozy ambience. I do have a warning that they have a split plate charge which I find rude for restaurants. I am small and if I would like to share my food do not charge me for that. It isn't my fault I am not obese. :) I usually tip a lot if I share so don't force me to pay for it. Stopped by this hidden gem on a whim while driving through Alpine with my dad and my daughter on our way to the farm stand up the road a bit. It was a Sunday afternoon and there was a pretty steady stream of people coming in. We were seated right away. I had not intended on eating breakfast for lunch but the gentleman at the table across from us had a plate sized Belgian waffle with strawberries and whipped cream that looked so good that it changed my mind. My daughter and I both ordered the strawberry waffle and I got scrambled eggs and bacon with mine. The waffles were really delicious, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Sweet but not TOO sweet. They used real fresh strawberries, too, not those slimy pieces swimming in sugary juice. Just delicious. Even something as simple and plain as scrambled eggs were so good. They brought out this little cup of salsa along with some syrup. The salsa was amazing! I asked if they made it in house and they said yes and I asked if they sold it to take home and I was told they could if I wanted. So I bought a cup of their salsa. I don't even regret it! My dad had the Sunday Special, chipped beef and gravy over biscuits with home fries. He was very satisfied with his meal, as well, and he also really liked the salsa. We went here for breakfast before heading out to another activity we had planned for our day. Got there around 10ish, and we were told for our party of 5 adults and 2 kids it would be a 20-25 minute way for inside, slightly shorter for outside. We told the hostess to seat us wherever opened up first, and walked across the parking lot to the little shops to browse around while we waited. Spent less than 10 minutes doing so before we headed back over to grab our table outside. Seating is open air, on a deck that overlooks a small brook/pond with lots of pretty greenery. They also had heaters outside to keep guests warm which was nice because it was a little cold and misting. Now onto the food and wait staff, the staff was very friendly and really attentive. We ordered some food for my 3 year old and because it came out before the rest of our food was ready, our waitress was kind enough to bring it out to him to help keep him settled. He got a waffle and a side of fries and my god, if that's what you consider a side, I've been getting gypped my whole life. It was an entire plate of steak styled fries! Our food came out shortly after that and everyone agreed, the portions were giant and the food was so good. Even my husband commented "finally a place who has someone who knows how to make a real omelette!" I had pecan waffle and it took up the whole plate and had a hefty helping of pecans on top of it. We have a tendency to stop in the town every time we take a trip to San Diego. We driven by multiple times, always saying, "we should stop here next time." So we finally stopped. We have missed out too many times. A rustic little treasure. It was a lovely afternoon, so we sat on the patio. The food was delicious, with plenty to share. The desserts, to die for!! My husband and I love to have breakfast at Janet's Montana Café. The food is always fresh and the service is always friendly. We usually get the Waffle Combo/Special. My favorite part is that they use fresh fruit, not the syrupy stuff. We haven't tried it for lunch or dinner, but breakfast is always a winner. A little bit of a wait on Saturday or Sunday morning, but that is to be expected. We have never had to wait more than 20 minutes. read more

Ate here twice while visiting from out of town if I lived in San Diego I'd drive up just to eat here- it's just that good! Mouthwatering entrees, crispy but not greasy onions rings and steak fries are all to die for. Half a sandwich was as big as any full sandwich in any other restaurant with the Rueben, French Dip and patty melt being six star quality. Service is perfect and food comes up quickly. All the salads are yummy and easily could be split between two people. If you order a lunch special, save room for the dessert that comes with it. Lemon raspberry creme cake was moist, perfectly fluffy cake with tart and tangy raspberry filling and puffy whipped creme frosting. My mouth is watering just recalling it! There can be a wait during busy weekend meal times. Hang out, have some free coffee and admire the scenery. Patio seating has lovely view of babbling brook and greenery. read more

This is the second time going to Janet's Montana Café and was not disappointed again. They have a huge menu and I had a hard time deciding what to eat. First time we went there I ordered a half tuna melt sandwich and a bowl of vegetable soup. The melt was very generous and awesome tasting. The soup was very hearty and a huge bowl. Today I ordered the turkey melt...delicious! My husband ordered the French toast which he said was great and our friends ordered the spinach omelet with the biscuits and gravy...they love it! The portions are very generous and the service is 5*. The waiter last time (Jordan) and the waitress this time (?) were very attentive and always smiling and pleasant. The place is in Alpine and very rustic feeling with deer heads on the wall and lights with deer antlers. Love the rustic, cozy feel of this place. When the weather gets warmer we will definitely sit outside on their deck patio. For a 25 minute drive to Alpine from Del Cerro it is well worth it. Really takes you out into the countryside the way it used to be years ago and still is now, Love this place! There is a little soap shop right next door too. First visit, Sunday late morning. Arrived around 11am, so morning crowd was winding down. Stood at hostess podium for almost 5 minutes (with employee at podium), completely ignored. When I asked if this is where I check in, all she asked me was my name and how many in my party. Took a while to get greeted by a server. Drink orders, asked for water. Never came, asked same employee, he brought only 3 waters for a party of 5. Had to ask for water TWICE. Looking around for someone to ask for help with waters, it struck me that not ONE employee had a smile on their face. They walked around, almost angry looking. Food was good, nothing spectacular, restaurant is BEAUTIFUL, and cozy, but I won't waste my time or money on this place again. Get out of craziness of the city. This place is amazing! The service and food was delicious. You ought to see the pies. I passed through on my way back to Arizona and so glad I got off the highway for the peace and food of this wonderful little place. The patio was so pretty and it's all tucked away in the trees with greenery all around. Such a nice retreat. I had the special - omelet with 2 cheeses, small pieces of sausage, tomatoes and avocado on top with buttery crisp hash browns and a huge biscuit I could barely eat 1/2 of it. The person that lives near by and doesn't like Janet's has had to have lost their taste buds. We have been going to Janet's for years and have had nothing but very good food and service. Over the years we have taken our children and then their children. Our children and grand children still ask to go to Janet's. We will be there at least twice this month with two sets of acquaintances. I ate here because of the reviews. It was three of us and we were told there was a 20 min. wait. A party of 5 arrived after us and were called before us. They thought they had 4 so they went ahead and called us. They then got their food before us even though they were seated 5 min. after us. We saw our waiter 4 times, when he took our drink order, when he brought our food/water and check. He didn't refill our drinks or check on us and didn't bring my mom more ice after she asked when he first brought the drinks. I got a cheese enchilada plate. The rice was fat from being overcooked. The enchiladas were basically tomato flavored greece. The rice also had too much tomato flavor. My husband had a dry burger. My moms food was the best tasting but nothing worth the $16 it was. She had a chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes. I can not figure why this place was packed with people or the reviews were rated well. On our way to Julian we stopped off in Alpine for lunch. We checked out YELP for some recommendations and decided to try this cafe. The food was good and the service friendly and attentive. I ordered the 1/2 sandwich combo with soup and fresh fruit. The soup tasted homemade and portions were substantial. The only reason I wrote 4 stars out of 5 is that prices seemed high for lunch. They could easily cut the portion size for most meals to justify lower prices. read more

The ONLY reason I did not give 5 stars is because of the price, I'm on a budget and to eat here is definitely a treat I need to save up for, but with that being said the food is DELICIOUS, and so worth it! I had probably the best bacon cheeseburger I've ever had in my LIFE and the portions are pretty decent, I had to take some home and I'm a BIG eater.
