We've been coming to Jan's ever since we moved to Upland. It's clean, has a huge variety, friendly staff, and lots of supplies to choose from. We've even brought sick fish here to be evaluated before choosing a treatment route. They helped us diagnose the fish and showed compassion. They use to be a good local fish store, now they have drastically changed since the last time. Went in there to drop off angelfish for credits but they didn't allow it, only donation, that's understandable. BUT, I tried calling earlier so I wouldn't waste gas coming, they then got annoyed of the phone ringing and actually disconnected it the phone. I went over and then saw the condition of the store too and it was getting sad, they have no stock, a good majority of the fish were sick or near death, if not then dead. They were rude to me when I was leaving too, staring at me like if I was stealing the whole time. WOW! What a turn around from my first two visits. The employees here have really started to pay attention to the reviews and change how they run their business. I was immediately greeted by two employees and asked if i needed assistance twice. The main problem last time was customer service. This trip made up for it ten fold. Every issue corrected and now i can enjoy the shop i am spending my money at. Facility: This was an exceptionally clean and well stocked store. They had many things to choose from between filters decor medications and more. I did not check pricing. The girls attitude speak for itself. We go there often for fish and other aquatic products as well. My boyfriend and I went there yesterday. She was extremely rude. Before we parked right in front, they were both on their phone. As soon as my boyfriend walked in there she starts speaking the language we do not understand. That's just extremely rude. And when you aggressively tear up receipts right in front of the customer, you've got a problem. My boyfriend gives measurements of glass tops, always wrong. When we tell the girl, she gets bothered like she doesnt want to deal with it. Well, you know what? No more measurements and you dont have to speak your language around us. Been here a couples times before... but have recently coming more often. The guy who works here is real good and very helpful. He knows his fish and corals. They stock allot of exotic clown fish and get new arrivals weekly. I like that they carry different varieties of frozen to ROE. Well organized fish store with both salt and fresh water. This is a really great place for fish lovers. They have a HUGE variety and the prices are good. They carry a couple dog, cat, bird items, but nothing I'd go out of my way to go here for (I didn't see any dog food). You can find plants, rock, and other aquarium items. Love our local fish store!! Julie is awesome and so is the rest of her family! It's a family run fish store, and I have special ordered salt water fish, sands, filters, parts, and mats. Never a problem getting them. They have a beautiful maroon clown fish is the front of the store in the counter and I asked them to find me one just like it. They found me one and also her husband. Love them. Very healthy fish, plants, and coral. This is where I buy all my fish now. Never an issue with any type of disease, fungal, bacterial or parasites. I'm so happy to have checked this place out. I have already been to 3 other fish stores and this is by far the best that I have been to. This place was really clean and well taken care of. Their fish looked healthy and their tanks were all clean. All the other places I've been to, I had not purchased any fish because of how the tanks looked. They also have a good variety of salt and fresh water fish. They also have a pretty good selection of coral. Unfortunately, though, they did not have the coral I was looking for at the time. They did say they get shipments every Wednesday, I believe. I know there were some negative reviews about their prices, but I can you tell from checking out other fish stores, Jan's prices on their fish, beat all their competitors. The customer service was good. The girl that helped me was very nice and helpful. I definitely recommend checking this place out for all your aquarium needs. read more

Just happened to be in the same shopping center (visiting Harbor Freight) after class this evening when I decided to drop in. I've heard about the store a few time on the fishkeeping forums, but there were conflicting reports of this place either closing down or moving. There were also so-so to bad reviews from searching on Google Maps, including one about a rude owner who admits she's rude. Outside, they have a nice frosted glass art of an aquatic motif. Bright signage. Inside, I was kindly greeted (asian man; I'm guessing he's not Jan) to a really clean, organized LFS. Surprisingly so, if I may say. Well lit...and here's the real kicker...it didn't smell like a fish store! They have both fresh and salt, including some plants. Their fw fish and plant stock were pricey, but most, if not all, were healthy. Lots and lots of dry goods and quality equipment. If you live in the area, I recommend dropping by. I'm a fan because of the way they run the store. They may be a little more expensive, but I think the quality makes up for it, especially if you compare to Fish City in Pomona, where the fish are cheap but the quality is hit or miss. read more

Nice store, nice selection, slighty higher prices, no returns. Actually, with persistance I was able to do a return because of misinformation the owner gave me. They stated that I could have corals with the lightning I had just fine, but upon research they definitely misleaded me just for the sale. Ever since then, when I visit the owner is very pushy to have me leave the store. I'm still a customer and I still bought that day! Regardless, lost my business and be warned- before you buy do extensive research and do not trust the info they may give you. 1) Very Clean Facility- Well lit, NO dead fish floating around, NO mildew smell. 2) Very nice customer service- Helpful and attentive. 3) Easy to find: Just across from Montclair Plaza (in the shopping center with ROSS and Anna's Linens. 4) Nice Merchandise: Good Variety of Fresh and Saltwater Fish, Live Coral, Dry Coral, Driftwood, Decorations and hardware. Everything was neatly stocked and easy to find. They even have ready to use gravel (it has liquid treatment to de-chlorinate the water and not need to rinse. if you are looking for feeder fish, they have those too. ( SM and LG Goldfish and Tiny Guppies) When I came in a professor had a cluster of students teaching them about how this is a model of a niche business. I dropped by the other day. The store was clean and bright inside. They had a good selection of fish from South American, to Asian, to African, and lots of marine fish as well, including corals. I did not see many, if any, dead fish in the tanks. I did not notice sick fish, either. Overall, it looks like a good store that I would consider buying from. At the time, I was only looking. I noticed they had some otocinclus catfish which can be difficult to find sometimes. If I could have, I would have bought some. They also had some specialty fish like arrowanas, and some very expensive fish that are rare. Jan's is worth a look. If you like fish, you should consider this store. Note: another reviewer speculated that they lace their tanks with antibiotics so you won't notice the fish are diseased. He said his fish had ich after he got them home. There are several things wrong with this. First, fish can develop ich from the stress of being put into a new tank. Ich is a parasite, so antibiotics would have no impact on it. Also, all of the tanks are plumbed together. It would be cost prohibitive to "lace" all the tanks with medicines just to sell a few sick fish. I think it's irresponsible to speculate this way because your fish got sick. That's why you quarantine new fish. read more

I really enjoy coming here when my work takes me to the area. a.- really clean, well stocked, and organized b.- fair pricing c. great selection I find the fish to be really competitively priced, and really healthy, I've gotten some crabs, clown fish, and angel fish to test out my new tank, they're thriving where as my fish, snails, crabs and corals, from other places died within a couple of days. The store owner, Judy, I guess really appreciates patronage and makes sure I'm satisfied with my purchases, I even haggle a bit with her sometimes. Dry goods and corals are a bit expensive, but IMO worth a try. read more

This is one of the cleanest fish stores I've ever been to. There are no dirty wet floors or questionable smells. If you're a hobbyist who wants to introduce your hobby to a friend or significant other, this will be a good store to take them to. Some of my other favorite stores like CK Fish World or Global Aquatics have better selections and prices -- but they are also a bit dingy and dirty. They do not make good first impressions. Jan's on the other hand is a very well kept store. It is also in a nice shopping center next to a Petco and a sporting good store. (While some of the other fish stores I've been to are located next to liquor stores and tattoo parlors). The selection here is above average. All the fish seem to be healthy and well cared for. Many of the more expensive fish are listed as "no refunds" -- which doesn't really bother me because I rarely take the trouble of returning fish anyway. The staff seem pretty honest. I asked them if a bichir is good for my community tank and they informed me correctly that it is too aggressive and gets too big for a 60 gallon. I purchased a boesemani rainbowfish and he is doing great so far. read more
