Stopped by on a recent visit to Chicago, and was relieved to find that the updated Janson's still makes a proper Chicago dog. The menu is smaller and a lot of the charm is gone from the scene behind the counter (well, I call it charm--you might call it funk, grunge, trashiness, scariness, or no-man's-land). As a southsider I always wondered when Jansons would come back. I heard about the legendary ketchup tacos, that friends swear by, no matter how disgusting that sounds. When it popped back up in town I was willing to give it a shot, sorry no tacos though. I had a burger which was great, nice egg bun and all the fixings. Fries good, service very fast, and cute inside decor. Second time I went back I got the chicken Capri sandwich. It sounded good in theory, fresh mozzarella, basil, but was a little sloppy. The sauce was soaking the sandwich and it was too much to enjoy. But I won't discount the place, il come back and try one of those awesome banana shakes. read more

3.5 I was saddened when it closed and seemed like it was never going to reopen. I finally made it in passing by while working. I ordered a cheeseburger with extra lettuce onion and tomato. (How I order my burgers and recommend you don't he same) it put a smile and was what I was looking for. I'm looking forward to returning and having the same, with a side of cheese fries and a strawberry shake. Looks like they opened a dining room nice so you don't need to sit in the car and eat. Give it a try, put a smile on your face. One issue that should be addressed is the use of Oscar Myer hot dogs, that needs to be stepped up. Go local: Chicago Red Hots, Vienna, or Scott Peterson. The banana shake didn't wow me as much as everyone says it should but it wasn't bad. I also really enjoyed my two tacos and how they slowly fell apart onto their wrapping on the picnic table outside and I loved eating everything that fell out of them. It's pretty far south but in warmer months it's definitely recommended and I anticipate a return trip. Cash only. read more

I like Janson's because it is one of the better cheesesteaks I have had in chicago. Not better than Philly's best (nothing in chicago is), but they get the soft bun/chopped steak aspect correct. they grill a solid polish and burger as well and the cheese fries were good. The cheese wiz they use is a little off putting at first cause it makes the fries stick together, but they taste good so who cares? Always good service and the prices are fair. Good place to go if you want some fast food and are trying to avoid the Wendy's/Mcdonalds/Burger King types. read more

There are better places that serve the same type of Chicago staple food at lesser prices and better taste. I had ordered 2 cheeseburger combo meals with cheese fries and while I was impressed with the fresh, golden buns I feel it was more of an attempt at copying Culver's than an original take on the food. 20 dollars for 2 combos is overpriced considering I could have had 5 Guys or Meatheads or Smashburger for the same price. Not to mention places like Nicky's on 116th, Rosie's on 103rd and Pappy's on 95th which serve Chicago food at way better prices. I won't be coming back anytime soon. read more

This place has a really good charbroiled chicken sandwich. The seasoning is good and the wheat bun that it comes on is great! The fries are pretty good too, but make sure you ask for fresh fries (I've gotten an old batch before that were no good). The thing that's kept me coming back, even when it was owned by the previous owners, is the pineapple milk shakes! These aren't your fancy "real ice cream" milk shakes, LOL, but they're good nonetheless. I've been coming to this place for over 10 years and I must say, whoever the new owners are have done a great job revamping the menu and updating the decor. read more

Do not order the Turkey Burger!!!! This rating is strictly for this sandwich...the meat was ridiculously bland and my bun was hard. By far the worse Turkey Burger I've ever had. Very nice place, fast service, and reasonable prices. Has a nice outdoor patio eating area, as well as an indoor dining room. I had the Char-Broiled Chicken sandwich. Had kind of a blackened "southern" type seasoning on it "super-tastey". Was served on a multi-grain bun with mayo, tomato, lettuce and red onion. With fries on the side. Everything was very good. I'm so excited for the reopening of Janson's. They have the BEST cheese, which also means the best cheese fries, and cheese dogs. Their tacos have the perfect amount of grease, and the strawberry banana shakes are a classic. I've been eating here since I was a fetus. As noted, banana shakes are the best in the metro area and the hot dogs are fantastic.

I hit this place up about 11:30 on a friday. The food was really good. I had the #6. A gyros with fries. The tots were the best around. But the one door in and the same door out was very annoying. They had the garbage can blocking the second exit? I was trying to eat at the counter, Not stools, No room. Fergedaboutit. I had people standing on top of me waiting for their food. And it wasn't busy yet. I did not want to bring the sack in my car. It would take a week to get the smell out. As I was looking around the counter , I wondered if the health inspector ever made it this side of the tracks? Probably Not. I'll stick to Dukes. They at least have a mop. read more

In the nine years I have lived in the Beverly area I have visited Jansons three times. Twice for a milkshake and once for the "chilli" dog. Twice I have been disappointed. The first time, they forgot to put the banana in my banana shake. Why else do you stop at a place that advertises "Fresh Fruit" milkshakes but to get a milkshake with fruit. The last time, and probably the final time, was last week to satisfy my craving for a chilli dog. I knew something was up when I saw the beans overflowing the bun. I guess my definition of chilli is different than Jansons. I did not see one piece of ground beef and I did not taste anything spicy. So, go for the shakes (maybe) but leave the food alone. read more

I do a lot of shopping for wine making supplies at Bev-Art at 105th. and Western and pass by Jansons all the time. It looked like my kind of place for fast food as it looks like it's been around forever. We finally decided to stop in for a beef sandwich - Big Mistake ! Absolutely the worst beef in Chicago. This was our my fiancé and I first time going there. We were really excited to go since just moving into the area. However the experience changed once we walked in. We weren't greeted like the other customers. The young man Tim was very rude even after us telling him it was our first time. Instead of telling us about the menu options or something as simple as how to get to the dine in part , he simply gave me a menu of the gyro "deals" that they had. He was so rude and ignorant. When we asked him questions about menu items he rolled his eyes and he seemed annoyed that he had to answer a question. He wasn't helpful he didn't smile. As when we sat back we saw him greeting people who seem like customers who come in all the time, which is cool, but why treat the new ones like crap? The young lady was equally as rude. Didn't want to greet us, didn't want to smile. When we asked for condiments she had a complete attitude when handing them. Milkshakes are the best! Nothing else compares... Burgers, dogs and (cheese) fries are the best. Stay away from the tuna melt. It's served cold and the tuna isn't the freshest. This spot is definitely a gut-buster so if you go here normally, I hope you have a gym membership-unless you're pushing for experiencing a heart-attack or diabetes. Enjoy! read more

Oh Janson's how I love thee! I am so glad you are back! I grew up with Janson's back in the 70s when I lived on 103rd and Claremont. At 16 when I first got my license I would roll up in my '68 Ford station wagon with my 8 Track blaring loaded with friends. I especially came for their chili cheese dogs and their Chicago Style dogs. At 25 I left to seek fame and fortune travelling to many places in the US and internationally and finally settled near Olympia Washington where no matter how hard I try, cannot find a good Chicago dog. When visiting family in Chicago I always stop by Jansen's for some fare. I was recently back in July of 2016 and was pleasantly surprised by the remodelling that had taken place by the new owners. I had a simple Chicago style dog, onion rings and a chocolate shake. It was as good as I remembered it, even better with the new counter and dining area that replaced the hot dog vending space. I will be back again to relish eating your bright green relish! read more

after watching chicago's best? i convinced my wife and son to try the italian beef and the shakes. bigggg disapointment-----it was more hot and mild peppers on the 6"bread than beef 6oz with 2" of peppers only on the end of the bread. called spoke with brie? a manager who appologized and asked if i ate the sandwich if not bring them back for a credit,and try the bigg beef - i think not. $30 gone!!! read more

New Janson's has really improved upon everything that was wrong with the original restaurant. The food is delicious, staff is friendly, and there is actually a dining area inside! A little more expensive than say, Nicky's down the street. But also tastier. I recommend the Avocado Bacon Chicken sandwich and a chocolate shake! read more
