Had another great experience at Japan Express! I was craving something different for lunch--something quick and easy since I work down the road now--and Japan Express immediately came to mind. Unagi sushi is one of my favorite types of sushi, and I noticed they had Unagi Kabayaki as a special that came with salad and an egg roll. To complete the meal, I added two brown eggs, which are hard-boiled eggs marinated in a soy sauce-based recipe. They were delicious! I ordered ahead for carryout, and it only took me about five minutes to drive there. My food was ready when I arrived, and the unagi was cooked perfectly--sweet and savory, with a great flavor that paired really well with the rice, salad, and egg roll. A hole in the wall that's been around for years! So good. I always get the 1A which is Teriyaki chicken except I sub fried rice for the steamed rice. Depending on my mood I'll get the spicy teriyaki sauce instead of the original but both are delicious. Today I tried gyoza for the first time in my life. I ordered the 10 piece but ate a few on the way home because I was starving and anxious to try it! You can get them steamed, pan-fried, or deep fried. I did pan fried and they are very good! I used to come here when I lived in Wichita. I come back to visit a couple times a year and it just taste the same anymore. I think it's okay value for money but not the greatest. I'm sure this is a very unpopular opinion. 3/5 Yakiudon with shrimp 3/5 Pot stickers 3/5 Fried rice Everything was just average. Stopped by for lunch today. First time in. The place has an old menu with a lot of different options. Plenty of seating and a lot of people coming in for takeout which means they have good food. Placed our order for the Tonkatsu pork, pork gyoza and Katsudon chicken. The portions are big enough to share and everything was great. I absolutely loved the gyoza which is seasoned well. We've been going here for a couple decades since they first opened. Tastes like my Japanese mom's food. Love everything on the menu. We usually stick to our favs. Chicken skewers with onions, green peppers and mushrooms. So satisfying and so so delicious. We usually order gyoza too. I've got to say it too is delicious. All meals are complete with everything you need on one plate. The owner is an amazing person and the kindest human on the planet. The last time we had our pic taken with her, my dad, friends and of course me too. No matter what you choose, you'll be satisfied and pleased as literally every dish is no less than amazing. This was one of my favorite places when I lived here years ago and, when possible, I visit this restaurant when I'm in town. However, they are SO incredibly rude. What has happened to courteous customer service??!! As I was recently attempting to place a phone order for pick up, the woman on the phone was astonishingly impatient, indicated that there were too many in-person customers, and abruptly ended the call (via a resounding hang-up) as I was mid sentence. Wow. I am absolutely stunned. I will NOT be returning and have urged my friends and family members to proceed likewise. Such a shame. Do better, please. You are not the only game in town. read more

I still remember the first time I ate at Japan Express. I was 15 and out and about with my brother shopping for back to school clothes. Of course my first time here I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken bowl haha. I slowly gravitated towards their other dishes as my visits became more frequent. I think I've tried every dish on their menu by now. This is place is so good, when I was in high school, I used to skip class and drive all the way from Derby to come eat here! This place is definitely a hidden treasure in Wichita. The decor is simple and the staff are very welcoming. You place your order at the front counter, wait for your number to be called, eat out of styrofoam box, and clean up after yourself. I don't mind this concept at all! It keeps costs down because they don't have to hire servers. I always try to stop by here at least once whenever I'm in town. My favorite dish to get is the Obento with double scoop of rice. I sometimes substitute the fried mushrooms with deep fried Gyoza. It's whatever I'm craving that day. Their teriyaki sauce is amazing here. Just the perfect amount of sweetness. I also love their spicy soy sauce! The tonkatsu pork is very crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I love drizzling the tonkatsu sauce all over it. I could go on and on about every dish here and write a novel, but I'll end it with that. If you're ever in Wichita, I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

Don't come here if you're looking for sushi because there is none (well, they do have California rolls). If you're looking for other Japanese dishes (e.g. Tonkatsu, ramen, gyoza), this is the place to be at! I've been a regular since middle school and I can tell you they are very consistent when it comes to food. Located in the business center across from Bradley Fair, it was where my friends and I would go to for dinner after studying at Barnes & Noble. The food is cheap and delicious! Portion wise, I think it's on point. I usually have a bit of leftovers but that's just me (I get full easily, but also get hungry quick). My friends usually finish their food. The place is relatively small in size but it's bright and clean. You can probably come in with a group of friends and will be okay. There's a friendly lady behind the counter and you can go up to her and order. They have pictures of all of the food so you can look at those for ideas. Their menu is not very extensive, but believe me you don't want an extensive menu. This is perfect. I've tried almost everything and I would have to say I enjoy the tonkatsu (deep fried pork), curry puffs and their soy sauce eggs the most. Give Japan Express a try if you haven't already. Wow. Just amazing. The staff was very very nice. Food was delicious. I've never in my life had better crab Rangoons...these had flavor! Not just sugary, like a lot of others. The rice was so much better than anywhere I've ever eaten it. And it was just rice, not fried, but yum! It was all just too incredible. Just go there and try it, NOW! I highly doubt you'll be disappointed. It's not super expensive either. I can't bring myself to call it cheap, because that usually doesn't always mean good, and this was all so great. I ordered something, don't know the name, but the fried pork on special sauce and stir fried vegetables. Yummy. I could've ate it in two settings, but hey it was my first time and I just powered through the regular serving size with rice and salad (you can get two rice and no salad they ask). I was so stuffed. I love authenticity, and there's no doubt that Japan Express is from the hands of authentic Japanese people, though in this case the results were underwhelming. I'm not familiar with a lot of Japanese fast food, though I assume it exists - it's not like the people of Japan are eating sushi, hibachi, and ramen every day - and while the nice little ladies taking my order seemed definitely like first-generation imports from the Land of the Rising Sun, the bento box that was recommended to me was underwhelming. It's pictured here - the slices of chicken katsu weren't too bad, nor was the terriyaki chicken, though the latter one was dry and reminded me of what you might get in a supermarket like the Dillon's that's right down the street. Add in some heavily-breaded fried mushrooms and a couple of scoops of rice and you have yourself a meal. That the fast food of Japan is probably based on some simple flavors doesn't bother me, but the dry chicken was a concern. I'd still like to check out what other gems Japan Express has to offer, though the bento box is not something I would recommend. read more

One of Wichita's best hidden gems! I have been coming here for over a decade and the food is just as consistent and delicious as when I first came. They give you great portion sizes at shockingly low prices. My go to items here are the obento w/ double rice sub the mushrooms out for an egg roll and the pan fried dumplings. You will not find a better deal on dumplings here in town! This is one of my favorite spots in town and it never disappoints! Definitely one of my faves in Wichita! I thought I wrote a review before, but I guess I haven't yet. I go here regularly. My favorite thing to order here is the Yakiudon (ask for it spicy!). I have yet to find a restaurant that makes it as good as this place. I also love their Gyoza (Pan fried, of course). Sometimes I crave the Obento because I like the variety that it has (Chicken Teriyaki, Katsu, Fried Mushrooms). Once in awhile I order the dish that has the Chicken and Egg over Noodles (I always forget the name). When I was living in Newton, I use to love coming here to eat. Eventually I moved away to California. So I found myself back here in Wichita and wondered if the food was still good... it is still as awesome as ever. The same people work there. I went with my usual favorites: pan fried pot stickers (#13) and beef sukiyaki (#2). My wife had the chicken katsu. All of it was great. Her chicken katsu was also a crispy and crunchy as we'd remembered it. The portions are excellent, and the cost is cheap. For all of the above it cost us $22 roughly. Favorite Asian take-out restaurant in Wichita! This little mom-and-pop restaurants is my go-to for Japanese comfort food. The service is fast and friendly (if you forgive the cashier for being overextended in her job) and the quality of food never fails. Their portions are mighty and come packed with flavor. My favorites: Chicken Kastudon on top of eggs and veggies with rice on the side: fried chicken on top of sauteed veggies and scrambled eggs. Unagi kabayaki: Grilled teriyaki eel (the ever-famous "eel sauce" people love) on a bed of rice with pickled ginger and egg roll on the side. Green onion pancake: simple chewy, light Japanese pancake with green onions mixed in and you dip it in a thick, sweet soy sauce. Only $1.50! Score! The online menu is slightly outdated as some dishes they don't serve anymore, like the fish katsudon, or the prices may not match current prices, like the unagi kabayaki is not $9. This place is a true gem and I leave satisfied every time I eat here. I highly recommend this place for broke college students like me. read more
