I wish I could give a negative star. First off we are loyal customers and enjoy the food here but they will NEVER receive our business ever again. This is my first yelp review and only writing because I just cannot believe how we were treated tonight. I walked in to place our usual order-- chicken teriyaki no noodles and extra rice instead. The nice cashier was ringing in our order when one of the cooks said 'no special orders tonight we are too busy'. I told him my husband is gluten free and cannot eat the noodles and always gets extra rice. I further explained he had an allergy thinking maybe he misunderstood me. Then he the shouted 'no special orders can't you see we are too busy' and pointing at his line of orders. So I turned around and walked out and then asked if that was the manager-- and she said yes. My husband went in to see what was going on and the manager approached him angrily shouting 'no special orders can't you see I am too busy??' and then threw his towel on the counter!!! read more

4 stars for fast and convenient "hibachi" at a reasonable price! As a preface, I really enjoy hibachi. It's one of my favorite types of food. As such, I tend to be a bit lenient. However, this restaurant, while obviously not a good as a sit-down hibachi place, serves up a solid dish. For around $10 at dinner, you can get a giant pile of rice, noodles and vegetables (with a ginger salad AND a soup) with the meat of your choice. They even let me switch to "all vegetables" for no extra charge! Also, it's actually served as quickly as a standard drive-thru. I was suspicious that it would be fast, but they took practically no time at all! They also serve various types of sushi (which I haven't tried) along with smaller hibachi "bowls". These don't come with vegetables, but they are cheaper than the hibachi dinner meal. Overall, this is a solid stop when you want something large and reasonably healthy served up fast. read more

Had dinner here but left feeling a bit unimpressed and don't let that takeout window fool you! This place adds up if you don't pay attention! This was obviously a fast food restaurant once upon a time so they are making do with what they have. It is pretty cool that you can order hibachi style meals and sushi via drive thru and I'm sure this is a hit with the college students that live in close proximity. We decided to dine inside. The menu is a mix between hibachi style dinners and several choices of sushi. I went with the shrimp dinner while my husband had the steak and chicken dinner. All dinners comes with noodles, rice, soup and salad. Also ordered an order of the spicy tuna and volcano rolls. And 2 drinks. Order came up to $34. Yikes. Higher than I expected for "fast food". Found a seat in the dining area which was surprisingly busy. The silverware and plating confused me. They had actual real silverware but only for spoons . And plastic forks?! I wish it was the opposite as my husband and I both commented on how hard it was to eat with a flimsy, plastic fork! Our food was brought out to us on actual real plates. In the middle of our tray was a gigantic squeeze bottle. We had to ask the girl working and she told us it was "white sauce". The meal itself was fine but mediocre. The rice was mehh. No substance . Essentially just rice cooked on a flattop with maybe some soy sauce? The noodles were odd as they weren't the thick, authentic egg or lo mein noodle that you are used to eating. They were thinner and broke off easily not to mention difficult to eat with the plastic fork. On the bright side, my husband commented that the steak was good quality meat. Sad to say but the sushi wasn't to my standards. The spicy tiny was tuna wrapped in the rice and seaweed with a drop of sriracha topped on each piece. The volcano roll was essentially rolls with topping on it. I found it to be uninspired and hard to eat. Tasted lukewarm when I expected the topping to be somewhat hot. There is no actual service in the dining room. There seemed to be minimal coverage . There were 2 people cooking and 2 taking orders and clearing tables. We placed our plates on the trash can after clearing. They may want to think about putting some sort of bin on top of the trash so it will be easier to transport dirty dishes to the back. Overall, not sure we would come back. The concept of quick takeout is cool though and it seems to work for most since this place was consistently busy while we were there especially for take out orders. But for the amount of money we paid, we could've went to Fuji Sushi and been much happier. I hope they work out those kinks and get some real forks in the dining room! Ha! read more

I walked in after lunch. It was very dirty and I saw a few flies. I decided immediately not to order sushi and ordered the grilled shrimp with vegetables. (It came with rice and a salad for about $8.) The salad dressing didn't taste anything similar to a Japanese dressing. The main dish came quickly. There were a lot of shrimp and they were very tender. The cook put too much sauce on the fish that tasted like a Korean sauce-tangy. I seldom rate restaurants a one OR a five because they HAVE to be that bad or that good. Every time I drive pass this place it confused me... until I finally walked in and was completely confused. It's a fast food Japanese place run by Chinese. The menu was what caught me by surprise. A pleasant surprise! Hibachi! I love hibachi food even better they have sushi as well... They have steak and chicken for the light of heart that are scared but they also have scallops and shrimp. You can mix and match and the food portions are huge. I got the steak and scallops, it was accompanied with soup, salad, a heaping pile of rice, and noodles and veggies. Let's just say if I wasn't starving I would have had enough to cut the meal in half and eat it for work the next day. I won't be leaving my local hibachi places anytime soon but this food was QUICK! From ordering to sitting down it took about 10 minutes. How can you go wrong! This place looked so dingy on the outside. Luckily we went through the drive thru because I'd be afraid to see what it looked like inside. I ordered the shrimp hibachi dinner which came with fried rice, shrimp, veggies, and lo mein. On the side I was given a small salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. I've been keen on the idea of a healthy fast food drive-thru for a long time and Japan Express comes close with...drum roll please... Drive Thru Sushi! Sound like an abomination?! Actually it was alright, fresh and flavorful enough, especially given the time constraint (although I think they probably pre-made the sushi). The bad: The lady at the drive-thru speaker didn't seem particularly happy to have a customer...I mean more cranky than a Wendy's, for example. The drive-thru window is very awkward. It doesn't open completely so the window lady had to shove food and receipts through the small opening. Lastly, I paid for soup but didn't receive it. All in all, if you want average service and fast, inexpensive asian food, Japan Express fits its moniker. I don't think I'd spend the time or money to go back though. I should have taken the other reviews into account ... but it is so close to my house that I could not resist. I did not get sushi so this is just for their hibachi menu. The hibachi lunch was 6.95$ which I thought would be a good deal until I got my food :(. They do get two stars because drive thru was incredibly quick and efficient. Can't really judge them on service, but they were curt and efficient -- no frills. I didn't think that there was enough food -- I am not the biggest person nor the biggest eater. It was less than a typical chinese food take out lunch special (which I advice you drive a mile up the road for). The hibachi just sits in sauce with veggies (veggies are not separated which from the drive thru description I thought they were), but sit in a brown sauce that is all too salty and makes everything very mushy. Texture of... canned soup veggies. Can't think of a better description. It came with a side salad which was enough dressing, but FOUR pieces of iceberg lettuce. I counted. Nothing else. One positive is that they did include a lot of sauces -- two white sauce which was ok and one incredibly sticky sauce which I avoided. It wasn't until my roommate assured it wasn't "as sketchy as it looks" and that I should give it a shot. And hey, I was pleasantly surprised! The food is very rich, BUT if you're looking for something fresh, filling, and healthy---well friends, this is not the place. But if you're looking for tasty, savory, and fills you till you'll pop with Japanese take out goodness then you've arrived at your destination. This is one of those restaurants I'd go to if you're just in the mood for crappy (and by crappy, I mean delicious but whoa if I ate this every week I'd be big as a side of barn!) food. I've had hibachi cooked in front of me at restaurants before so I'm a seasoned hibachi eater and for a place that's considered "fast food" asian food it's pretty legit. I got the steak lunch special and it came with fried rice and a salad. The salad was just whatever but the steak was awesome quality meat and the sauce it was cooked in was amazing. I walked in and it looks like a cheap not well cleaned old fast food restaurant. I ordered 2 sushi rolls and I felt robed. Only 6 skinny pieces per roll where the rice tasted only like rice vinegar and the overall look of the sushi was not appealing. I ate and I regret it instantly. Went through the drive though because my child was very hungry. I had tried this place probably 5 years ago and it was awful then, but I thought oh well, its still here so maybe its improved. The teriyaki chicken bowl had rubbery chicken in it that seemed of very low low quality. Perhaps the chicken comes prechopped, precooked out of a can, then they sauteed it in teriyaki sauce , and obviously, that product & preparation is considered acceptable to this establishment. They are not misrepresenting the"Express" in their naming of their operation. We were treated hastily at the drive through and the "order taker" along with their audio system was garbled and pretty unintelligible. I would have ordered a few more items , but since this was kind of quick fix for my 12 yr old and I had had a bad experience yrs ago and the female worker was "on edge" (why , I am not sure as there was only one car that appeared later behind me) . It's cultural sometimes too where this is really a Chinese run operation selling Japanese styled food. Authentic Japanese food is not served EVER with "fried Rice" and Japanese culturally are not impatient and gruff to their patrons. This is a full fledged Japanese restaurant with sushi right there on the drive-thru menu. I ordered the chicken teriyaki dinner and a tuna roll. It came out to a little under 14 bucks and the dinner was huge. It came with the chicken, veggies, rice, noodles, soup and a salad. They even knew to add two sides of that yummy white sauce. I can't stop recommending this place to people. It's not that it's amazing food; it's that Americans have been sold on the delusion that sushi and hibachi are top dollar items. While there are master sushi chefs in Japan that elevate it to an art, it's also sold at corner stores and is about as "fancy" as a sandwich. After going once for lunch to sample the sushi I am sure that I will be back. Most people seemed to be ordering the hibachi lunch specials, all of which came out fast. We waited about 15 minutes on the sushi, which they prepared fresh. I highly recommend the Samurai and Godzilla rolls because I like fried rolls and their special sauce mixed with spicy or eel sauce is a tasty combination. Ok ya'll so it is what it is... Fast food hibachi and sushi... I DO NOT recommend the sushi, tried it twice and it made me sick twice. However, I really can't complain about the hibachi I get the veggie or shrimp combos bc I don't trust the chicken or other meats but they are actually quite good and a big portion. I think the fact that they even bother giving a salad is silly, they out maybe 10 shreds of lettuce in a small cellophane bowl and the wanton soup is pretty sub par as well, very very salty. But the entree is surprisingly pretty tasty and big. Next thing I want to touch on in the service, again: it is what it is; fast food so the service quite honestly sucks! The girl who is always there (I have been a solid number of times), is the most unfriendly and unemotional person she appears to hate her job and does not leave you feeling welcome for coming.
