The most tasteless beef tataki i ever tasted .
    Audrey-Eve A.

I am writing this as I'm still sitting at my table with my husband . Last time we came here Japanese village had a nice sushi menu with nice fresh raw fish and decent rolls. Tonight we didn't want the hype of the cooking show just wanted a nice Japanese supper. We sat in the lounge and read the " lounge" menu which has not much on it .. some tempura... One roll ( deep fried with salmon and tuna so it said) some sashimi.. tuna, salmon and yellowtail . And bento boxes and udon noodle bowls and rice bowls (???????) we got the vegetable tempura, shrimp tempura , assorted sashimi , salmon sashimi , some grilled shrimp skewer ( no S here ) the one and only roll listed on their menu . First received was the tempura ( and seriously the only good thing that we ate) fresh and delicious but for the vegetable tempura it only had zucchini, yam and onions) omg and then we got the sashimi ( fucking just nasty shit out there ) come on now JAPANESE village ... 14$ for 6 tiny pieces of salmon sashimi and I got assorted for 16$ for 3 pieces of tuna , 3 pieces of salmon 3 pieces of WHITE coloured yellowtail . It was FULL on white... I have never EVER had a piece of WHITE ( not see through ... just WHITE) yellowtail sashimi . It tasted not like any yellowtail I have ever had . I finished the whole thing because at the point I was starving . So big disappointment right there as me and my husband love fresh raw fish ( sashimi) after my husband almost puked his salmon out.. The one and only roll listed on he menu came to our table . I had a few pieces and wondered what the hell was inside ( on the menu it said tuna and salmon) I opened it up and then it was over cooked white fish... salmon cooked isn't white by the way . Asked the waitress and she said it's a blend (more question mark now ????) full on disappointment . Oh and I almost forgot the review the beef tataki . DO NOT SPEND 17$ on that Tasteless beef tataki. It's suposed to be with ponzu sauce ... I shoved my face to the bottom of my plate ... Okay like literally licked it TRYING for dear lord to try to Taste that 'ponzu ' sauce . Nope .. didn't taste like anything ! Maybe a little like onion water for the people reading this I am not a picky eater . I am usually a easy pleased costumer with food... But this time around I couldn't just bend down and take it . Overpriced disappointment . I guess they let go of their sushi part and just went on full cooking show ( teppan ) . The waitress seemed apologetic because we havnt been here in a bit ... still 175$ after tip for a sub par meal its unacceptable.. we did order a lot of booze to drown our sorrow which is why the two stars ... one star for the good tempura and one star for the yummy drinks and the poor waitress that had to deal with my long face

I've never been more stressed out over a dining experience than I was at Japanese Village. It's very cool watching your food cooked in front of you, and our chef was very friendly. But knife tricks? I don't want knife tricks! Maybe I'm just a huge fraidy cat, but I spent entire evening going like this: . (OK, I realize you can't see what I'm doing right now, but just imagine me covering my eyes and cowering in the corner. Yup, just like that.) But all scariness aside, the food here is outstanding. The prices are a little high, but your meal includes rice, veggies, shrimp, mushrooms and bean sprouts on top of your order. I had the teriyaki beef which was definitely worth the price! We came here on a Tuesday night on a total whim, and the place was still hopping with lots of hip, downtown urbanites. I was impressed for sure. Make sure to make a reservation if you want dinner plus the show on a Friday or Saturday night!

This was the disappointing steak. Poor cut.

This was another place on my wish list that I had such high hopes for. So many people told me about how entertainIng it was for a dinner. Basically dinner and a show for the price of dinner. Well I've been lied to. The chef was clumsy and not entertaining at all, sadly I couldn't hear a word he said over the fan. He spoke so softly it made it difficult to even hear how I wanted my steak cut. I ordered steak and shrimp. The steak was a terrible cut of meat, full of gristle and fat. When you only have chop sticks it makes it very difficult to enjoy and kind of meat if there is fat or gristle in it. The shrimp was tiny and tough because the chef over cooked it. He put the mushrooms on the plate to pair with the steak and literally it was two slices of mushrooms. Again so disappointing! My fiancée ordered teriyaki steak which less than half the cost of my steak and shrimp. Sadly she received double the food that I did. The bill shows up and it's $125! My goodness here I am with the bill that was so over priced it was stupid and then I'm still hungry. Plus I have a stomach ache from all the fat that my body ingested. I would never go back. Perhaps if the chef was entertaining the price may have been worth it but this sadly was not the case.

We had the duck with risotto, truffle fries, pan seared salmon, and the homemade mac & cheese with chicken breast. All were excellent. Our server recommended a couples drink combo which consisted of the following: For him - Maple Old Fashioned: Bearface Triple Oak Canadian whisky, maple syrup, and Angostura bitters. For her - A savory-sweet mix of Ojo de Tigre Mezcal, passion fruit liqueur, blood orange syrup, lime juice, and a black salt rim. It was awesome. The hotel had an amazing gym facility and pool. I easily spent two hours in the gym as there was a variety of activities. Also, the decor was absolutely divine. Gorgeous lighting, and panelling throughout with a big open kitchen where you can see the magic happen. We would definitely stay the night again!

We got seated at our table and then we waited...and waited...and waited... So the manager came by and asked us if we need anything and I replied, "Yeah a server." Apparently there was a mix up with communication and whose table was whose. It is gorgeous inside. Very sexy. Plush benches, silver tones, and blue lights. This would be a great place to be seen after a hockey game or something. Finally with our fixed menu in hand and some water. The manager asked us if we would like the wine paring for no extra charge. What a fabulous gift! We started out with the black truffle and brie aranchini. This is super rich and flavourful. Great texture on the outside and creamy goodness on the inside. My husband and I got one of each of the salads - Wedge and Ceasar. The portions were massive, so I am glad I got the wedge. I could pack it up and it was fresh and crisp the next day. Dressings on both of them were excellent I got the black sesame ahi tuna and my husband got the petite filet. Both were excellent but if I wanted to finish dessert I would have to get this packed for home. Finaly onto dessert my husband got the chocolate peanut butter bar, while I went with the strawberry pavlova. Both were fine, but the peanut butter bar was super rich. The wine pairings were excellent. Great place, even better when you have a super deal.

It was a bit too much for me, but we can't all like the same things. I think the staff might have recommended we not order two mashed potatoes, but otherwise service was sufficient and relatively attentive. Attention was given to my gf dietary needs, but no attempt at a gluten free bread was made, as has been done a similar high end establishments. Our waitress nearly gave our meal to another table, but fortunately was intercepted by another server. We arrived at 5:30 and got our meals at about 7:00. The ambiance was reminiscent of a high end pizza place- large marble topped tables to shout across. My lamb was a bit under done, but that was okay since I had allowed for that. I've had better lamb in my own home, but I admit I'm not a fan of char as the main flavour. It was very attractively plated and I liked most of the vegetables that shared the plate, excepting perhaps, one or two pieces of bitter greens. My two companions enjoyed their meals, both having ordered filet. The three of us wound up spending about $300.00, tip included.

We split a bunch of menu items - steelhead crudo with Thai basil, citrus, chili, olive oil, apple bison tartare with tamari ginger vinaigrette, sesame, dashi cracker beets with goat cheese custard, pears, pistachio, tarragon vinaigrette tagliatelle, lamb sausage, smoked tomato, rapini polenta the posset and the chocolate dessert We also enjoyed a bottle of Merlot Food was excellent. The stand outs were the steelhead crudo and the beet salad. The steelhead crudo was beautiful and shining like jewels on the plate. And the beet salad was the same.
