Love the innovative drinks and delicious steak and shrimp here, however it is on the pricey side compared to somewhere like the Keg. The ambience is a nice mix you can sit up front where it feels like a Moxies, or you can sit in the back where it's more of a business meeting place with larger chairs and tables. It could be more upscale, however it does have a higher end feeling by the bar. The staff is friendly and welcoming, however watch out for the one waitress that expects large tips and will combine your dine in and takeout bills and then expect a tip for it all. I had dinner at Lux last night it was my first time and I will never go back . From first walking into the restaurant we we're met with confusion on where to go as they have the entrance to the restaurant blocked and after standing there for a few minutes the server called us in from where she was standing further in the restaurant and she laughed saying nobody knows where to go . The restaurant was completely empty ay 8:00pm except for my party of two and another party of six . The food was flavourful over priced and was very slow . The service was absolutely horrible and after asking our service repeatedly for our bill and told her I didn't want my receipt as we walked out she came at me very aggressively and throw my receipt at me I assume she was not happy with the tip . Completely disappointed and I don't recommend the Lux . If you're looking for a truly exceptional steak house try Barbacoa in Spruce Grove the best I've ever eaten. read more

Had a delicious Cosmo to start, bringing it back to early 2000 lol Ribeye was perfect! Mushrooms tasty. Brussel sprouts were the best I've had nationally. Our first bottle of Pinot Noir was great Baldacci, but I didn't enjoy our second bottle of Zinfandel (likely just my preference and palette). The third, a Cab Sauv, was much better! With chilled, romantic vibes and prices that aren't necessarily going to empty your wallet on a special night out, LUX STEAKHOUSE re-open after 19 months is reason enough for a visit. Really a 3.5. It wasn't as bad as a decent, but I am not sure if it should recieve 4 star review. So in general it was a really great night. The atmosphere is upscale and beautiful, and our service was amazing. The menu is focused on steaks, which I am not, but there was options for non steak people. Our cousin from the states wanted at steak experiece. And in general it was a 7 out of 10. It was decent, but I am not sure if rationalized the price. And they were out of a lot of stuff. My cousin is a craft beer person, and the the the first three beer options he asked for, they were out of stock in. Not the best start of the night. I had two cocktails and for the price point in comparision, was really good. They were the same price as many upscale chain restaurants but much better done. Loved the old fashion. We decided on a few appetizers. We decided that the beef tartar was one of the the better ones we had in Edmonton. Annoyed that they only had 3 oysters left, and for a high end dining place we had to split them. And also some of the craft beer was out. So if you are charing a 27 dollar steak (cheapest without sides ) you better have your act together for everything else. And they didn't. The two cheapest steaks were sold out. We had to pick a higher priced steak. He picked the 80 dollar steak. Which was super disappointing. The appetizers were the highlight of the evening. Everyone loved the truffle perogies. Dainty with a soft truffle filling. My husband said that the beef tartar was one of the best he had eaten. He likes it when the beef is the star and it isn't full of filler. It was really well done with high quality beef. However, the poutine was soggy and sad. We had one bite each and didn't touch it for the rest of the evening. The creamed spinach was good. Great texture and tasted fresh and bright. The steaks, which is why we were there were there, was okay as best. Bland. My cousin'ts steak wasn't done properly. I didn't order any but I tried my husband's. Not something I would pay for. It was ok but not worth the 40 plus bucks that we paid with A SIDE. NO SIDE INCUDED! My daughter and I had the mushroom ravoli. Wow. Great flavour, loved the truffle cream and it was a very generous portion. Beautiful atmosphere and really great service. However, I probably won't come here unless we are hosting someone that is really craving steak. read more

Been here many times and we've never had a bad meal. Went for a belated Christmas dinner with my partner. As to be expected post-Christmas, the restaurant was not too busy for a Saturday night. We were seated promptly and had some pre-dinner cocktails. For our meals, my partner had the beef ribs, i had a steak with prawns. My partner was concerned about portion size on the ribs but the server assured him they were sizeable. She wasn't lying as you can see in the photos. We were stuffed but managed to save room to share carrot cake. To the staff at Lux and in particular our server Rena, thank you for yet another excellent meal. We've never had a bad experience here and look forward to our next visit. read more

I met a friend for a festive lunch and we made reservations in advance. They get pretty busy before Christmas so next time I know to make a reservation at least a few weeks in advance. We were able to get a table for 2 at 1PM but it was still busy with people arriving when we did at the hostess stand in the restaurant part. We didn't have to wait too long for them to clear a table and we were seated in a booth in the restaurant part. I prefer this part rather than the lounge area with high tables that's closer to the Commerce Place entrance. Our server was decent but tried a little too hard to be funny. But he got us drinks, food, and cutlery when needed to he did his job. The lunch menu had a good variety of sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. I couldn't decide between the open face chicken sandwich or a salad but ordered the sandwich with a side market salad ($17). There were an item or two not available as they were sold out but my friend was in luck as she ordered the last beef sandwich. It didn't take long for the food to arrive at our table. The open faced sandwich was a pesto topped on a grilled chicken breast on top of cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and avocado on a multigrain bread. It's a good thing they provided a larger knife as I needed it to cut through the vegetables and bread. The side salad was delicious with green, mandarin oranges, walnuts, and vinaigrette. The salad would be tasty with chicken or shrimp. The food tasted fresh and I liked all the vegetables on the sandwich. When it was time to pay our bill, our server let us know there was a survey if we wanted to complete and be entered to win a draw for a gift card (I think $100). We paid our bill and didn't feel rushed to leave. Although the prices were a little high, I enjoyed the atmosphere and food and would come back for lunch again. read more

The Century Hospitality Group has always been a prominent player in the Edmonton culinary scene. The group runs multiple restaurants throughout the city (MKT, Delux Burger Bar, etc.), and even has further expansion plans this Fall. There has been a lot of movement in the Century Hospitality Group over the past few years, with chefs moving around and concepts being changed, so I was looking forward to trying out some of the fresh new dishes on the menu at LUX. Chef Tony Le has been with the Century Hospitality Group since 2006 and took on the role as Executive Chef for the group over the last few years. Out of all the restaurants, LUX has always been a staple for people working in the downtown business core. Located within Commerce Place, it's easy to walk to and caters to both the lunch and dinner crowd. The dining room has more of an upscale feel, while the lounge is more relaxed. Our night started off with a selection of small bites and shareable appetizers, and first to the table was the Kale Salad ($9/$13). Kale tends to be a love it or hate it ingredient, but I found that this salad with honey lemon vinaigrette, shaved Sylvan Star Gouda, ground pancetta, and walnuts to be well balanced, light, and really fresh with the citrus notes. Pork Belly fans at the table were happy to see the next dish come to the table. The 24 Hour Bacon ($14) features a slab of bacon that is braised for 24 hours before being cut and seared. Each piece was fatty and seared crispy, pairing well with the acidity from the mustard and pesto served on top. The Lobster Croquettes ($19) were crisp, decadent morsels perfect for sharing between two or three people. With a combination of Atlantic Lobster, mascarpone cheese, and Yukon Gold potatoes, the croquettes were rich but not overly dense. The exterior was fried golden and topped with crisp herbs and truffle aioli, adding an additional dimension of flavour. Next up came the Spicy PEI Mussels ($17) cooked in a sauce of Sriracha pesto, leeks, white wine, parsley and shallots, and served with a side of grilled bread. The mussels were plump and fresh, and the sauce was seasoned well so as not to overpower the natural flavour of the mussels. Last but not least was the Bone Marrow Stk Tartare ($17) with it's unique presentation right in the bone itself. Unfortunately, unconventional presentation made the tartare difficult to mix as the bone below didn't have the marrow roasted out of it. Using AAA Alberta beef, dijon mustard, capers, herbs, roasted garlic, and crispy shallots, the tartare was fragrant but could have used a bit more salt for seasoning. Main courses served family style is new to LUX, but Chef Tony wanted to incorporate some dishes that encouraged sharing amongst the table. One of the boards is a classic Surf + Turf ($115) featuring a 24oz lollipop ribeye topped with sautéed langoustine, a generous side of lobster mac & cheese, grilled rapini, roasted fingerling potatoes, and classic bernaise sauce. The ribeye was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the mac & cheese was rich and creamy, as expected. The potatoes may look like a filler, but well seasoned fingerlings are a great accompaniment to any steak, if you ask me. Based solely on the price point you may be looking for more food, but don't be fooled as this surf + turf can easily fill 2-3 bellies. You could hear everyone's amazement when the Crispy Corn Meal Snapper ($69) made it to the table. I never expected to see a whole deep fried fish staring at me outside of a Chinese restaurant, so I was excited for this one! This whole Pacific Snapper was served on a bed of crispy chickpeas and cabbage and accompanied by a board of iceberg lettuce, thinly sliced radishes, grilled avocado, cilantro, and salsa verde. The hands-on eating was fun and interactive as we worked on building our own crispy 'fish tacos'. Now if you're not a fan of looking your food in the eye, the kitchen is happy to serve the snapper with the head off. It's been a few years since my last visit to LUX and I was pleasantly surprised by our meal that evening. While LUX is branded as a steakhouse I like that there are modern twists and unexpected surprises on the menu. There are some premium prices that would prevent it from being your go-to restaurant, but it's a great spot downtown for your next special occasion or celebratory meal. read more

Finally had a chance to try this downtown staple for a business lunch this week. While the overall decor said business, there were patrons eating who were dressed casually, so I felt that perhaps they were more relaxed over the lunch hour. Regardless, the service (waiter, hostess, etc) were all incredibly attentive, which should be the trademark of an upscale restaurant. I tried the STK salad: romaine, green beans, fingerling potato, 3 oz or so of steak prepared rare and tossed in an oil and mustard based vinaigrette. Overall, it was an absolutely delicious but the portion was a little light. For the price, I was expecting an entree-sized portion, but I think it was closer to a side salad (in regards to calories, etc.). For anyone watching their calorie intake while dining out, this would be an excellent go-to. Overall, LUX did not disappoint and I would eat here for lunch again in a heartbeat! read more

This is one of my go-to standbys. If you need a place to take guests, you shouldn't be disappointed. This is an allergy aware restaurant - they'll bend over backwards to accommodate. If you have special needs, be sure to call ahead, make a reservation and speak to the chef if you have complex needs - 24 hours is preferable so they can make something safe for you. FYI - they also have a dedicated gluten-free fryer so you can eat fried anything safely! We ordered the Crab & Artichoke dip to start. Chef offered to make it as a lobster and artichoke dip, (we think we had it as a special item last time we were in) - but decided to try the crab...and it was good. This time it came out of the kitchen screaming hot - it was just a-bubbling away. Might have been a tiny bit over-fired, the dip was broken (crowd goes ohhh) with a little oil on top, but I can't stop eating it - it's delicious! We elected to share two dishes, a main meaty dish, and a salad. Our server kindly brought an extra plate so we could dish as we liked. Portion size... half chicken is _half_ a chicken! comes with a few potatoes and some lovely beets. For the regulars (aka not gluten free diners) there is a great gravy as well as a beer glaze that I'm told is like the best waffle sauce and tasted great on the chicken. We always have extra to take-home. I don't know why I don't remember to bring containers. It's great to have lunch (for TWO) for the next day! If you want more sides, order more sides - the bacon creamed corn is one of my favourites. The Cobb Salad - it's loaded. And thankfully, not overdressed - I usually order my dressing on the side because most restaurants drench the greens... I forgot this last visit, and I was pleasantly surprised. Perfectly dressed. If it's not enough, they'll happily bring you more. Haven't had a bad wine recommendation yet. The special promotion wines have been on the money so far. Our server Kaitlyn is great. Considering it's difficult to find good/quality serving/kitchen staff these days, it's nice to see familiar faces when I return. There are menu specials - but they're popular and limited, so get there early! Reservations are best. You can order in the lounge, but I prefer the ambiance and service of the restaurant. The booths are my favourite. Dessert... oh the Chocolate Decadence, of course! GLUTEN FREE FOLKS! Prepared with care in the area of the kitchen least possible to expose you to cross-contamination. And it's a sharing size. Really. It's enormous slice of chocolatey, ganachey, goodness served with some delicious, lovely coulis/fruity swirl, and with a strawberry and some whipped cream, Was a wee bit disappointed that the lights were turned down in an already dim restaurant while we were there. We arrived shortly after 5, and left around 7:30. Sometime in-between, the lights were dimmed further... used the candle at the table to read the wine listing. Dinner for 2, appetizer & shared dessert... $70 plus tax & gratuity. And two additional portions for lunch tomorrow to boot. Wine... is extra of course. I've only to LUX three times for special events (usually Edmonton Geek Girl Dinners), and to the bar for dinner/drinks once but I've mostly had an excellent time. Only one of these events had inadequate food (the other ones, last night especially, the food has been marvelous!)... and the food has ALWAYS been delicious! The chefs are so friendly and personable, and this place had a great Twitter presence too! Probably my favourite food item is the lobster mac 'n' cheese. But the other food options are also so delicious. And I know better than to just order the lobster mac 'n' cheese by itself (too rich without something to accompany it). The serving staff are mixed in their attentiveness and serving style but generally very good too. I'm also pleased that they make a decent blueberry tea (though it isn't my favourite of the restaurant versions of this drink). I would definitely recommend visiting here if you want a good fancy-looking place for a food and/or drinks. read more

Lux for lunch. All I had was soup but it hit the spot. Some kinda beef. Wasn't soup of the day so it's there every day. A working mans soup. Good broth. My companion had a chicken burrito thing that he said was good too. I've been back lately for supper and after work cocktails. Everything is still Good. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Lux is short for luxury. Everything from the lights and red carpet outside the entrance, to the curtains and dark mahogany furniture inside painted the image of sheer luxury. The restaurant consists of two spaces, the dining area and the lounge. The floors are covered in plush carpet, and there are big black curtains draped from the ceiling. The table candles are fake (light bulbs) as I discovered when our waitress accidentally knocked ours over (I freaked out because I thought the menus were going to burn). On the walls, they have large abstract paintings and framed hockey jerseys. Former Oilers captain Ryan Smyth owns 40% of the shares for the restaurant, so that explains the jerseys.The music is a combination of techno and house, but they play it very low so it doesn't kill the cozy atmosphere. Most people came a bit dressed up, but there were a few people in casual denim. I usually just like to order drinks and dessert when I go to a fancy place like this, skipping the pricey entrees altogether. So I was disappointed when my lychee martini was pure vodka. For $9, I expected my drink to at least taste remotely like its name. We ordered the homemade tomato tortillas with spinach and artichoke dip, and this made me feel a bit better. The dip was warm, thick and creamy, with chunks of tomatoes, onions, and artichokes and strings of spinach. For dessert we had the Lux parfait and pomegranate cheesecake. The parfait had caramelized bananas, coconut, and candied pecans. It also had some kind of spice in it (cinnamon?) that left a strange tingly sensation on my tongue. I'm not sure if I liked the spice in my dessert, it was different, that's for sure. My friend ended up finishing almost all her cheesecake. I had a taste of it, and it was pretty good; sweet and not too rich. Another friend had the creme brulee which came with banana ice cream .The ice cream was nice, but he said the creme brulee was a bit too sweet. The Lux experience wasn't all I thought it would be, but I'm glad we went that night, because now my curiosity has been quelled. It's definitely a plush place to go on a weekend night, if you're willing to dish out some big bucks. But overall, it's just another (majorly) over-priced restaurant with too much focus on ambiance, and not enough on food. As one of Edmonton's best steakhouse or so I perceived I had some high expectations. I love steak and I know how exactly I want it. Big juicy ribeye. Dry aged minimum 28 days. Nice, broiled crust on the outside. Medium rare. Juicy and tender. It ended up being a 21d dry aged steak, barely a crust. Under seasoned. No aromatics like rosemary or garlic butter. Medium. Had to work the knife like crazy through some parts. 21d does barely anything to the meat, and honestly I even doubt that here based on the moisture and tenderness of the meat. Unsure about prime grade either. So dry, I almost had to dip my steak in the black peppercorn sauce just to get it down which in turn overwhelmed the meat. This could be due to it being a solid medium when I'm used to medium rare but oh well. Let's go back to the appetizers. We got calamari and dry short ribs. Both underseasoned. Unfortunate. Dessert sort of redeemed itself. Well, not mine, the chocolate cake came out impressive but was honestly average for taste. The coconut cake though was truly delicious. The salted caramel creme brulee came out with too little custard, too much sugar, and most of all, burnt on top. Should be nice and orange and light brown. It was more like.... Dark espresso brown. Service was great. Guy was super nice and attentive. He even waived my colleagues burnt creme brulee. (expected though). Quite frankly to sum it all up, an underwhelming meal. Oh well. read more

CHG restaurants are not my favorite spots to eat as the food is normally bland or inedible and the service left to be desired. On the couple of occasions I have attended LUX, the experience has been much better. They now have a host who comes around to ask if you need anything, grab your coat, etc and supplements the service provided by your server. It is a nice touch and I suppose adds to the lux nature. The prices are a little bit higher than are warranted and having to find parking can be an annoyance, including having to pay so validation would be nice, but generally our experience is good here. The calamari appetizer is nice, I would get it again. I had Chef Matt's special sriracha fried chicken with corn and fries that was off menu and it was wonderful. The corn needs to be added to the everyday menu. The side of mushrooms is always a treat as well and the desserts, especially the carrot cake are both well worth it. All in all Lux is a good experience on the higher end of price and service is typically fine. Check it out. read more

There aren't enough good words to describe my experience at LUX. If there is no other reason to visit Edmonton, LUX is all the reason you'd need. To start, the appetizers were phenomenal. Who knew Canada had not only delicious steak, but great seafood even this far inland? Our seafood platter was done perfectly with beautiful presentation. The charcuterie board was possibly my favorite. A variety of high end meats (the prosciutto was the BEST I've ever tasted) and delicious cheeses was impressive. The homemade pickles were equally notable. But the main course was not to be outdone. My steak was cooked to perfection. The sides were equally as tasteful. Lobster mac and cheese, fingerling potatoes, mushrooms, asparagus - it was all so delicious. With food this good, you know the service was excellent. The waitstaff clearly took pride in their offerings, as they should. We were delighted when the chef came out with the largest hunk of steak I have seen in my life to show us their very own challenge. He told us only two have ever attempted to eat more than 190 ounces of steak, a pound of lobster mac and cheese, a pound of asparagus, and a slice of chocolate cake. (Possibly more of the sides, I can't quite remember.) It's too bad Adam isn't doing the restaurant food challenges, because I would bet money not even he could complete that crazy challenge! read more

After the huge issues that I had below, I was contacted by the management team of Lux, and invited back on their dime. The experience was a good one, our server was attentive to us and the other 2 tables that were in the restaurant at the time. The sparkling wine was a nice touch. My dietary concerns were taken into consideration and the food was good. The bone marrow steak tartare was excellent, something I always love to eat. My steak was also done to perfection. My only complaint about the meal was the bone marrow that I had as a side tasted "off". The previous visit it was awesome, this time not so much. Thank you for the re-do Lux! read more

Steak very good and would go for steaks here if I had the $$$$$$, the pasta not so much a fan really overdid it on garlic in the thick/or is it a little too little sauce and the lobster was nothing special but a large portion of perfectly al dente noodles. This place is very expensive but if money was no object I would still not be pleased with the pasta and have steaks. Rumored Gordon Ramsey ate here as the place to be/try with celebs. I've been for lunch here twice in the past few weeks and both times I was quite satisfied. The first time, I had the "where's the beef" lunch entree, which included several arancini with wild mushroom, and some veggies in the side. I enjoyed this dish immensely and thought it was a creative lunch time offering. The second time I had the lobster truffle mac and cheese. It was okay, but not as good as I've had elsewhere. The service on both occasions was attentive and professional, and very quick. Lux is a great lunch spot for a quick but higher end experience. You can choose to sit in either the bar or dining room. The bar would be better for a casual lunch and the dining room is great for business lunches. read more

Had lunch there Jan 16, 2020. I ordered the steak sandwich medium rare. First time got it medium well. Steak was less than a half inch thick. Send it back for a do over, by the time I got it back my tablemates were done eating and this time it was at best medium, still only about a half inch thick. Fries both times were kind of a dark brown and on the greasy side. Not very impressive for a top end Steak House. Ate it anyhow because we had been there well over an hour already. My two companions had the steak and salad. Their steaks were done spot on medium rare and, were nice and thick, and reasonably tender. Salad and the small roasted potatoes were very good. Service was decent but certainly not exceptional. Prices are quite high without being reflected in the quality of the meat or service. All round, this place misses the mark in its efforts to be a top tier restaurant. Great décor but everything else is closer to Denny's, wouldn't say they even meet the Keg standards and I am not a Keg fan at all. read more

This Lounge was very high-class, and reminded me of a lounge right out of Sex and The City. The ambiance was very sexy, romantic and intimate. great for a date night! I had an absolutely amazing Martini (Chocolate Covered Cherry) and then bottles of wine were half price on Saturday (you didn't have to tell me twice)! The appetizers and main courses were to die for! I tried some of the Bison Gyoza, Crab and Shrimp Cocktail and finished my meal with the Market Salad. Everything was done to perfection and presented very elegantly. It's a little pricey, but definitely worth it. The only complaint I had was that the service was extremely slow, however our server was new and we didn't have anywhere to be. read more

This is my go to place now when I want a nice dinner and I want it done right. The customer service here is fantastic, as many of the servers have been here for years. The servers and hostesses do their best to learn customer names, their usual drinks, and a few tidbits about you, so everytime you come back you get personalized service. Ed in particular is fantastic at this, and Jill, the manager, always makes an effort to visit each table to check up on their customers. The chefs and sous chefs also try to make appearances throughout the night to ensure the food is to your liking. If you want a quick meal, it's always best to go Monday to Thursday as the dining room is fairly quiet and you can get in and out in just over an hour. Lunches are usually doable in under in a hour if you don't go on a Friday and let them know you're in a rush. I always wind up leaving here with delicious leftovers to eat the next day. read more

It was a wonderful day, and I was out celebrating the news of my recent marriage with a dear friend. We enjoy meeting at Lux and have done so many times. I arrived via the restaurant and was displeased to find out there were in fact, no reservations under either of our names, and the dining room was full. I was told I could relocate to a booth in the lounge, however was uprooted once seated after being told it was actually reserved and I had to go find a table to sit at on my own. Not a fantastic start. I dislike being seated and then told to stand up. I was grumpy. Thanks to Maddie who was my server in the lounge that day, my experience at Lux was saved and my apologies for taking such an inordinate amount of time in posting this review Maddie - however, here it is as promised. Maddie was accommodating, polite and prompt. My tea was brought out within minutes of ordering it (yes, I had tea in a lounge!) and she kept my hot water full without having to ask. My friend and I started with their prawn appetizer - delicious and the prawns were obscenely large in size. I joked that we were still waiting for them, because we ate them so fast by the time Maddie came to see how we liked them, they were gone. I had a sandwich - I think it was a bacon club (nice reviewing Ingrid!) but I recall the fries were awesome, and the portion again, very generous, so much that I actually took half the sandwich and half the fries home for later. They brought out a chipotle garlic mayo that I dipped my fries in - exquisite! Definitely worth trying! Before we left I thanked Maddie for being awesome and promised I would post a review. I also had a chance to meet Jillian Domes, who is the Manager and shared my kudos with her as well. OK so maybe I just had some super bad luck here but I just tried this place for the first time and although I give it points for effort, the best part of the experience was the fact that I didn't have to pay. Decor: Really nice - definitely a romantic feel to it - dark, contemporary, comfortable. Tables in the dinning room are well spaced so there's no overwhelmingly busy feeling at all. Points for effort come in here. Food: Now here's where I think my bad luck came into play a little but everything I consumed at this place was a disappointment. Drink - hurricane - I don't know what was up here but it tasted FUNNY...I don't know how else to describe it but hurricanes are pretty standard drinks so I'm not sure what happened there but it did not taste like fruit?? Appetizer - Seafood & Artichoke dip - the dip was super runny minus the gigantic chunks of artichoke that were a little much for a small tortilla chip (flavor was ok-ish but not super classy restaurant OK - I like Montana's dip better!). Entree - Salmon (as I am not huge steak fan - maybe this was my first mistake??) - Salmon was good minus being CAKED with way too much seasoning and the mushroom risotto was mushy - ummmmm, edible I guess. That all being said, my friend had a steak and said it was delicious! He tried the mac & cheese with his entree so I tired a bite - way too rich for me. Nonetheless, he seemed to really enjoy his meal - which worked out as he was the one paying haha!! So maybe it was too classy for me?? Maybe I should have just had steak but in my opinion this place is way over priced in relation to the quality of the meal. I have a lot of steak loving friends and have been to steakhouses many times and ordered something other than steak and really enjoyed it. When it comes to Lux - if your not planning on having steak then don't plan on eating here and enjoying it. read more

It's been soooo long since I've done a review on Yelp. This won't happen again, as I've made it a goal to write regular reviews! Walking into LUX, I felt comfortable right away. They offer a very relaxing dinner experience and this made my meal that more enjoyable. From the moment I walked into the door, the customer service experience was first class. When eating at a restaurant, I feel that great customer service completes a wonderful dinner. Servers are sales people for the restaurant, I've been preaching this for years to all my staff and friends. My server at LUX was very knowlegable of the menu, specials and drinks. For this he was able to upsale us like crazy on our bill, so alone I would give them 5 stars on Services. I've already experienced a great evening before I got my food, I was excited to start eating. 'People eat with their eyes' should be a staple quote for all restaurants, and LUX exceeded those expectations. When my food arrived I was even more excited to eat. The plating and design of these dishes are amazing! For the wonderful meal alone, I'm giving 5 stars. I really love what LUX has to offer, from a huge wine menu, delicious menu and high standard in customer service. I would recommended coming here to anybody I know. I hold great respect to the Century Group for the high standards they keep with their brand. Good job! read more

This steakhouse was recommended to me on a business trip and since I like to treat myself to a steak at the end of a week's work out of town, I tried this on my last night in Edmonton. Overall, I found this to be a disappointment. I find that a lot of restaurants in Edmonton have gorgeous decor, are very trendy-looking, and have a pretty cool vibe to them. This one was no different. However. That's where my good impression of LUX ends. As a person dining alone, I often sit at the bar so as not to take up a full table by myself, and have something to occupy my time (the tvs behind the bar). The bartender was not overly busy yet not very attentive. I was greeted quickly and once I ordered my wine and steak, the bartender stood behind the bar and chatted with another gentleman next to me. Since they were right next to me, I could hear their conversation - a rousing discussion about how idiotic Americans are. And here I sit, an American, right next to them. Just because they didn't know this doesn't mean it wasn't a bit rude. You never know who's sitting at your bar. This left me with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth to begin with. When my steak arrived, I had to remind the bartender about the wine I ordered, as he had stood there the entire time until my food arrived chatting away. It was apparent he had forgotten and so he gave me a "larger pour since I forgot". The food itself was mediocre. The steak was decent, but certainly not worth $30 for the small 6oz portion I received. I ordered my steak medium, and it definitely came medium well. Also, the $30 steak price includes a pile of garnish, half a piece of cauliflower, and a single carrot. Really? No side dishes? For $30 all I get is a small steak?!! I've never known a steakhouse to not deliver sides as part of the dish when the price was over $20. All in all, this place was a disappointment: subpar waitstaff, mediocre food, and way too much money for what you receive. There are better places to go. read more

Wow this place has so many mixed reviews, definitely a tough one to rate. I've been here a few times now and have ordered different things each time. Most recently, I went in a large group and were seated in the private dining room. The service was really slow... Got there at 11:45 but didn't get our food until 1pm (this is the main reason the rating went down). I ordered the beef dip sandwich. It was a great sandwich with lots of flavor. The fries on the side were a huge disappointment though (I love my fries). They were kind of soggy and the dipping sauce it came with didn't have the right flavors to match the seasoning on the fries. I'm sure I'll be back again but hopefully it's a better experience. I always want time for dessert and coffee but I missed out this time! read more

Alberta beef is supposed to be the best, so being from Toronto, I sought out the best steak houses in downtown Edmonton. Well, to my disappointment, LUX is very average, and over-priced for what you actually get. I ordered the strip steak, which is supposed to be a very nice meaty tasting steak. I asked for it "Chicago style", which is a bit crisped on the outside, but was told that the chef would not recommend that, because it would ruin the taste of the steak. So I accepted and told them to do it the way they think is best. The steak arrives and it's quite colourless, under seasoned, and very bland tasting. I've had Alberta beef from Costco on a backyard BBQ that was way better tasting than this. It was just very disappointing to be overcharged for a steak that didn't taste half as good as grilling it at home. I would recommend to pass on this steak house. read more

I went for dinner on my anniversary was supposed to be a beautiful fancy dinner. What we got was very awful calamari they remade it but it was just as gross it tasted like pure flour and cornstarch. The perogies tasted much better. I then ordered the aged New York it was over cooked and tasted awful. They sent it back but by the time it was done my partners dinner was over. So I ate alone. Finally dessert. It was coconut cream pie I swear I could boomerang the crust across the room and filling was so thick. Betty Crocker frozen pies tasted better. I phoned the manager and emailed her pics of the night she said she would re do the dinner now that email address doesn't even work. Awful customer service. This place ruined my anniversary and should be ashamed to call themselves a fine dinning establishment. If I could give less then 1 star I would. read more

The place is nice. The service was excellent. However the food was just ok. It got a New York steak. Asked for medium, it was definitely overcooked, but not too much. It came with a ridiculously small side of vegetables and fried potatoes. The vegetables were not enough cooked. The LUX sauce was good, but nothing incredible either. Stopped in on Monday evening for a quick supper. Sat at the bar. The good: Absolutely delicious 8-oz striploin, nicely plated with somewhat unusual garnish vegetables, cooked exactly as ordered, and everything *perfectly* seasoned. 10.0 straight across, even from the Russian Judge. Topnotch caesar salad. Generous portion. Better-than-average tasting Tanqueray 10 martini. Cold, sufficient vermouth. Half-decent light over the bar. Nice room. The meh: No amount of olives is ever going to make a four-ounce martini in an eight-ounce cocktail glass a right and proper thing. It's not about the size of the pour; it's about how it looks. At New York City martini prices, I expect proper presentation as well as proper fabrication. I mean, I do them right in flip-flops and underpants in our coldwater shack by the lake, and I don't even get chest hair in 'em. There's no excuse for a short fill by a bow-tied pro in a swanky steak house in Glitzville. To the executive chef: Either adjust the dosages, or buy a bunch of five-ounce cocktail glasses at Ikea. And. Football? Dafuq? Everybody at the bar, and behind it, was glued to and talking about the football on the television. Two big flat screens blazing with it, over the bar. Thankfully the sound was off. Yeah, freedom of worship, fine, but it felt a lot like a sports bar, at times. Not exactly the vibe I'd expected. And doesn't anybody want to talk about girls and guns and human slavery and the wheat board and the brassiere ads in the Sears catalogue and overthrowing the government any more? I guess I'd go back; hell, I would *definitely* go back for the meat. Just maybe not on a Monday night. read more

Lux was SeXy. You get that atmosphere when you walk in - lux fabrics, low light and beautiful people. I was dining alone so I was expecting to get the "forgotten table in the corner" but I was surprised to be tucked in at a cozy corner where I had good view of the bustling restaurant. Service was attentive and polished - though I don't know if I classify myself as a "madame" yet - maybe I am. I had the tomato salad to start and found it alright. I make one at home and aside from the seXy presentation, it tasted much like mine. The tomatoes weren't ripe enough in my estimation. I wanted more to match the LUXury. My main came - salmon filet on truffle infused risotto. This was great! The light salmon flavour against the woodsy truffle was really nice. As I left through the bar and doors at Commerce Place, I see why it is a young professional hang-out. It's "upwardly mobile" central. If that's you, get there - you'll enjoy it! read more

Great place to be on Thursdays...it's their Martoonie Thursday night, where martinis are on special for under $3 (they used to be $2 but regulations change). They place modern dance beats that make the place sound like a club, yet it's still a restaurant. As this is in city center, it attracts a lot of people right after quitting time, and it can get really busy from about 5-8. It can also be difficult to get service here too as it is busy, so I would advise getting multiple drinks at once...the server will probably take a while to get back to you again. One thing about Lux is that if you do not come here dressed in any casual clothing, you really feel like you do not belong. There are always people around in suit and ties (as they probably just got out of work). There is also a premium feel in the restaurant as all the furniture, utensils, and even washroom stalls feel high end. The food here is not too bad, but it can get quite expensive quite quickly. They offer some unique combinations like vegetarian studel and bison gyoza. The dim lighting creates a very intimate atmosphere while the music in the background is not too intruding. You could also go to any one of the Century Hospitality Group (Lux, Hundred, DeLux, Century Grill) restaurants and get similar drinks and food as well. read more

I've now been to Lux three times, with different groups (because it's in an adjoining building to my work). My First two times might have earned at least a four star rating, but my most recent two star experience pulled down my rating to three at best overall. For a business lunch, in the dining room, the service was great. It was quiet, comfortable, and ideal for a meeting. The Mac and Cheese dish was very tasty, though a bit more al dente than I would have liked and it didn't "WOW" me. On my second visit on a weeknight for supper with my husband, the cocktails were okay and the burger was good, but again, not blowing me away. On my third visit with a group of co-workers, I wouldn't call it a terrible experience, but it was far from great. The server was "attentive", but maybe also new. She seemed a bit unsure and like everything was very unnatural. She was polite and I wouldn't put our entire experience on her shoulders. I feel like a place of this class should just bring everyone waters, not ask people if they want waters or if they want their water refilled throughout the meal. Just do it anyway, it's water. For 5-6 people at a table, a second drink menu would speed things up so we are not waiting for everyone to share one book. It took unnecessary time for everyone to peruse the options, causing our server to return twice to see if we were ready. The Lux Nachos are a great choice to share. We all enjoyed them. The calamari was tender with a light breading. The two items were enough for 5 people to snack on. We did ask for more chips to go with the dip - which was easily obliged. My first rather odd experience was when I still had about 1/4 of my first drink left (with ice), as several did my colleagues (beer or wine). Rather than asking me, "are you done, can I take this" which made me feel awkward, especially to say no in front of colleagues, simply asking if I'm ready for another would give me a better way to say "I' still nursing this one" or "I'm good with this one, but maybe in a few". When I was taking some of the remaining calamari from our share plate (that we were all still passing around and nibbling on) there were some pieces that were stuck together making it hard to take a modest portion. Before I could try to set the tray down to figure out a way to deal with it, and with there still being several pieces that my colleagues wanted to nibble at, our server wanted to take it and almost joked that I should take the last few bites. I rushed and pulled the whole clump and let her take it away. At least let us set the tray down and see if anyone goes for it after a few mins befor offering to remove it. My second drink, a berry bramble (lemonade type), had globs of sugary stuff at the bottom that was unpleasant to drink. The chocolate moose cake (not 100% on the name) was delicious! We all felt a bit rushed. We finally learned when we asked for the bill, then decided to have a third drink (in less than 2 hours) that our server was finishing her shift. That might explain the awkward push to move us along. We would rather her have said, when she was getting close, that her shift was ending and she would need us to cash out or finalize our bill and another server can work with us going forward. I appreciate that everyone has commitments beyond work - just be honest with your patrons and they will understand. It's better than making us uncomfortable and affecting our experience. We were glad to see management help the server to finish up so she could leave her shift on time. The bathroom stalls are very uncomfortable, with stall door slats that are falling apart and the base is way too high. The paper towel dispenser did not want to work easily. It was otherwise clean and well kept. The music was at a good decibel and tempo for the atmosphere, which was modern and slightly upscale. The seating and decor were in good shape and the tables were cleaner than most other bar tables (no stickiness). Overall, I would go here again if it was a quick lunch or an invite, but Lux would not be on my own list of recommendations. read more
