The "light" version of the Nutty Mixed Up salad at Jason's Deli has been a favorite of mine for a long time. The ingredients do remind one of squirrel food. Field greens, chicken, red grapes, raisins, cranberries, almonds, walnuts, pepitas, apples and bleu cheese are tossed together creating a healthy and sensational salad. The salty bleu cheese is a terrific combination with the fruit while the balsamic dressing is a perfect balance of tart and sweet. While here, I saw the cutest senior couple sitting in a booth together. They shared a sandwich and both went back for the free soft serve ice cream cone. Twice. Decided to come here the other evening as the easy solution to the consistent agreeing where to eat dilemma. Yup, it's a Jason's Deli... and is sort of conveniently located to my casa. I had a Spud Au Broc (minus the chives and bacon), partner had a soup with unlimited salad bar. I also ordered a fruit cup with some of that yummy, yummy sauce that comes with it. Sadly, there were only 3 measely pieces of broccoli on my potato and my fruit cup consisted of 3 (I guess it's the magic number) strawberries and a bunch of cantaloupe (ew). Steve grabbed some apples and grapes for me from the salad bar on subsequent trips back, though... which was nice of him. (esp. because it was my turn to pay). Potato was awesome and HUGE (it's actually 3/4 of two potatoes), I thought I'd have to bring half home for lunch the next day, but I polished that mofo off! Next time, I'll order a half. I've never been disappointed by Jason's... I know I can go anytime and get my broccoli and cheese soup that I love so much. And, another reason to dig them now, is that they're eliminating high fructose corn syrup, starting with their beverages! I love me some Jason's Deli for lunch. We used to order here all the time for crunch food at work, and I could never get sick of it. I could probably eat here every day for a week and not hate life. As it is, I eat the same thing each time I go in - a build your own turkey with jalapeno pepperjack cheese on the french roll with mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and chopped up pickle. Heaven! While I would like to try other things, I don't think I could pass up any opportunity to get this sandwich, ever. They also have fantastic soups. Haven't tried one I haven't liked, and now you can skip your chips and get a soup instead for 1.50 (before they gave you the chips and charged you full price). Their chicken caesar salad is the best, their fruit salad has dip that will make you fruitgasm, and they are one of the best delivery restaurants in town (ordering for 30+ people, you get to know who has things down and who never to order from again). Why not 5 stars? My inner healthy person objects. Well, while I absolutely appreciate everything on the menu having nutritional information on the website, the counts on what they serve is shocking. Yes, they have a whole bunch of healthy choices, but the majority of their menu is approaching or way over 1000 calories. For a restaurant that's trying to pimp such a healthy image, it's a little embarrassing to see them offering a 2291 calorie POTATO (the full plain jane), with 145 grams of fat, 63 of them saturated. If you take into account the average human not on a diet should take in 2000 calories a day, approximately 60 grams of fat, and as little saturated fat as possible...yikes. Off my soapbox now. That is literally my one beef with them, but since it doesn't affect my yummy delicious 500 calorie sammich, I can't knock them too much. So, I'd never been to a Jason's Deli before. On my way to buy cheap corn at Sprout's, I stopped here so that I wouldn't leave the grocery store with four pies or something. I wish I had just dared to go into Sprout's hungry. I ordered a Turkey Panini with bacon. There were a number of things wrong. 1) My order, which I ordered with a friend, did not come with my friends. 2) When my order did come, a few minutes later, it was cold. See a panini is a hot pressed sandwich so it should have been HOT, at least the bread. 3) Speaking of the bread, it was hard. Very hard. I bit into it and was showered with crumbs. 4) Oh and that bacon? There was one piece of it and it was limp and cold. For 7 dollars I can make my own sandwich and not have to sit at a dirty table eating a bland sandwich that a few hours later left my stomach very very sad. Damn, Jason.. you are nasty. read more

What used to be a reliable safe choice for a meal is no longer. Tonight ruined that option. We started out with a sullen employee taking our order at an exceptionally slow pace. Mom observed that her gumbo had hardly any rice in it and it was very thin with virtually no vegetables or seafood. To add to her gumbo woes, the cup was overfilled and running over, with no saucer beneath the cup to catch the mess. Her sandwich was just as substandard -- the staff having forgotten to add bacon and toast the bread. The cheese on top of my pasta was melted in parts and just shredded in others. Combine that with the toast being barely toasted, but stale. To top it off, even the free ice cream was a runny mess. It was very obvious that there was no management present. Free soft serve. That's right, FREE (with your meal). I almost didn't write a review of Jason's because, as far as I know, the menu hasn't changed in the past 15 years, so you probably know if you like the place. But I don't actually look at the menu, I always just get the "California Club"--which happens to be my favorite sandwich ever. Swiss cheese, lots of turkey, guacamole, bean sprouts, and a little mayo, all on a toasted croissant. Delicious. The club can be served with chips, fruit or veggies, and I go for the fruit, not to be healthy, just to get the fruit dip. In my opinion, cantaloupe is disgusting, but even that fruit is tolerable when made a vessel for Jason's fruit dip. Yum. This particular store seemed fairly well managed. I showed up at 9:30 (they close at 10pm), and everybody was sitting outside on break Everybody. But the manager opened the door for me, went to the counter and took my order, then proceeded to make my food himself. I'm on the never-ending quest for a go-to place for my lunchtime needs. When it's 12:01 and my blood sugar is plummeting faster than Bush's approval rating, I need a place that I can drive to on autopilot. I avoided trying out Jason's because several past reviewers commented on the wait times during the lunch rush, and not to even try to fit this in to an hour lunch break. Today I decided to screw it, as I felt entitled to a longer than normal lunch break. Yes, it was very busy, and the line looked long. But I ordered, paid, found my seat, was served food, and out of there in just over a half hour. And, no, I didn't stuff my face. I'm a lady. I chewed each bite slowly and even had time to catch up on some lunchtime reading. Oh, and the food was good too. Can you say "Holy Meat, Batman!" Let's just say that they don't skimp on the deli-meat servings. Good for those who are on a protein heavy diet. I'll go back. The tiled walls and floors made me feel like I was in a brick oven meant for pooping. -Ambiance: I could hear the muffled echoes of the lunchtime crowd trying to pierce through the walls. The presence of music in the bathroom helped drown that out a little. Ms. Lauryn Hill's smash hit "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" masked both the sound outside and my gentle drops of joy. -Cons: The one-ply toilet paper left much to be desired. It makes sense for a chain restaurant to have that, but I was hoping for something a little more. I was also disappointed there was no toilet seat paper. I had to place toilet paper on the seat. The gaps underneath the stall and around the bathroom door had me worried about my privacy. Someone might try to sneak a glance given the opportunity. -Overall: The bathrooms at Jason's Deli (Arboretum) are good, just not great. I'd recommend it to someone in a lax mood. Never heard of Jason's Deli before last week when I was in VA and the vendor I was visiting ordered lunch from there. Had a great sandwich with a side of fresh fruit so when I got home and realized there was a location close to my place I decided I wanted to stop by. Glad I did! Went in for lunch to go today. Great service! Nice selection of sandwiches, soups, salads, and more. Food was fresh and nicely made. Prices were reasonable for the quality of food. Even thought I was ordering to go, they offered me free ice cream which is included if you dine in. Also offered me something to drink while I waited. Just an overall quality experience. Since my new office is near Jason's Deli, my husband and I have been meeting here for lunch often. I have always loved Jason's Deli and really appreciate their commitment to serving food without high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. Their salad bar is one of my favorites with everything you could want for your salad. The greens always look fresh and I've yet to encounter anything wilted. They also have free mini gingerbread muffins and mini cornbread muffins that are the bomb! I am particularly fond of their sandwiches and the soups are always tasty. My husband loves getting half a baked potato and a cup of gumbo every time we go. Yes, it's crowded at lunch and a bit chaotic. However, the service is quick, there are usually tables to be found, and the food is good. Plus, they are great for to-go orders if you just don't have time to stay. Jason's Deli is the perfect place to go when you want a healthier meal, but be careful and realistic about portion sizes. I had the misfortune/fortune of reading the nutritional information online. Jason's Deli is one of my favorite chain restaurants. They are not a huge chain, but there are many locations in Texas. I do have to agree with others that going during lunch can be a problem if you are pressed for time, but the reason they are packed is that the food is great and the prices are good too. I like their Reubens more than Katzs, and they are a lot cheaper. They have huge stuffed baked potatoes also that are reasonably priced. In fact, all of their portions sizes are good and reasonably priced. Jason's Deli has gone out of their way to accommodate the very small portion of Austinites who can't eat gluten but still constantly crave sandwiches. (A.D.I.D.A.S.) Not terribly impressed with Jason's Deli - especially for the price and what was ultimately delivered, I feel a little annoyed shelling out so much dough for such a mid to low range place. I was stuck at a client's house while their kitchen was being redone so there was no way I could leave to grab some food. Having tried Jimmy John's and not seeing anything too promising I closed my eyes and picked Jason's. I feel entitled to write my review because I was *starving* and ordered a little bit of everything. I was able to get some fruits and veggies and a bit of a sandwich, I was satisfied but uninspired. A caesar salad, a create my own boring ham and cheese sandwich which earned Jason's their two stars, a fruit cup, french onion soup and the carrot cake. Everything was decent for the chain type food I was expecting but my french onion soup was disgusting. I'm pretty sure someone dumped the entire salt container in the broth and figured they would cover it up with an extra helping of burnt onions and cheese. I think there was a piece of bread in there too but I didn't get past the 4th bite. Other then that my only other complaint was the delivery. My delivery took an HOUR. Had I ordered 15 complicated different sandwiches, all built custom, I might have had pity but my ham/cheese/mayo cold sandwich was the most complicated item on in my order. I was warned that it might take 45 minutes but I was still hopeful, since my order wasn't complicated, that it would show up before then. That said, my adorable foreign delivery man got a nice tip from me regardless. And the $5.00 delivery fee... really? Really. Pretty predictable if you're starving, trapped and that's the only option. I was told I had no order placed, explained it was a later time order to Chelsea which to a while to get explained, then told couldn't be done without my ticket, then told couldn't write it down to do when order came through, then told couldn't she'd write it down but probably wouldn't be done cause they may or may not remember. Asked to speak to manager and came back and said he was busy and couldn't talk. Finally got with manager said he'd take care of it. Got Oder and soup was literally watery like water had been put in it. Pickle I called to ask for (never get if I don't) left off and bread was hard as a rock literally. Was afraid to eat the rest and chunked it. Management seems like an issue from other reviews. Jason's Deli on Research gets ridiculously crowded during weekday lunch, so if you only have an hour, don't bother! The wait in line and securing a table take forever. Come back for dinner instead. It's hard to go wrong at Jason's. The only hiccup besides the line today was waiting on the good ole ranch dressing to be refilled. I had a very standard salad bar and water. At this Jason's location I have never seen produce that appears to be anything but tip top. (I'm looking at you Hancock Center) Ate here with a friend today. She had a turkey sandwich with fruit. I must admit, I envied the red strawberries and yogurt-type dip. Everything was tasty, but not over-the-top-to-die-for... Admittedly, I would have a tough time giving any deli/self-serve/buffett style place 5 stars, simply because there isn't really much service that goes into it. It's all standard and while requiring good management of inventory and selection, it doesn't require an expert cook. All in all this is a great standard and I eat there at least once a week. I miss the old Jasons deli at Williams center from years past. I dislike the setup this one has for the place where I order the food. It's unfriendly and I do not get good service, as the soup menu is on the other side and all is hard to read. So, I finally used up my remaining gift cards and said this is it., No more. A former employer used to order their sandwich platters for lunch often. This is where they lose stars. The veggie sandwiches were often soggy, and also hard to identify because they weren't separated from the meat sandwiches or really labeled in any way. However, the enormous baked potato platters were good, and the times that I have gotten to pick out my own food from their menu have been good, too. Just so-so, but I guess that's what you are expecting from Jason's. You should not go there to be blown away with amazing sandwiches or salads. You're just going to Jason's for a regular so-so meal to fill your gut and move on with the rest of your day. It's not awesome, but also not bad. If I could give half stars, I would give this place 2.5. Usually I will get the Reuben. I wish they had fries, but they don't, only chips. The salad bar is OK, nothing special but they have whole boiled eggs, so if you need your protein, you can pile them onto your salad. I like the fact they have self-serve ice cream, although just like the rest of this place, it's not awesome, it just does the job of giving you something cold and sweet at the end of your meal. When someone really wants to go to Jason's, I don't have a problem acquiescing, but on my own, I probably would go to someplace like Mannyhattan's which is just south of Jason's. read more

Went in today and tried out their "Amy's Turkey-O - Toasted onion bun with turkey breast, sliced avocado, jalapeno pepper jack, red onions, roma tomatoes, lettuce, organic stone ground mustard. Served with chips and pickle" I typically get the deli club, but this sandwich looked good and I decided to try it out. It was delicious -- just the right mix of every ingredient. I loved me some Plain Jane potato from Jason's Deli back when they were in the Arboretum. Went to the one-off burn it yesterday. Ordered Plain Jane with chopped beef on top. Got chopped beef in cup and I am not joking, it was literally the texture of chewing through a dish sponge that was chewable. Nothing like brisket I have ever had in my life. Potato look like Godzilla had stepped on it and I made a u-turn in traffic. Show the manager a picture from their website and what I got and asked him to make it the same. If you're eating out there aren't many options if you want to eat pretty healthy and not spend a ton of cash. I'm so glad I have the option of Jason's Deli. First off, MINI MUFFINS! Oh wow, mini muffins. You wouldn't think you would get this excited about that but they are pretty darn good! For a restaurant where you have to wait in a long line (at this Jason's, at lunch, you're gonna wait in a long line) then wait for your food to arrive (I see this as a perk knowing its freshly made) it's nice that you can go right up to the salad bar and get yourself some pickles, cornbread mini muffins and gingerbread mini muffins (the later being my absolute favorite). Their turkey wrap is great! Something about the bean sprouts really speaks to me. I also enjoy their Mediterranean wrap with the kalamata olives. Yum! The light items part of the menu is nice because you have so many options for your sides. Their steamed veggies are great and so is their fresh fruit (but avoid the yogurt dip if your watching your cal/fat intake!). I enjoy the Manager's Special even though I think it is definitely misnamed. It isn't a special as it will cost you more than a whole sandwich will. BUT! You get to have half of ANY sandwich on the menu plus a cup of soup or side salad or fresh fruit. If I'm going to shell out the extra cash it's because I want a sandwich and soup but can't decide which I want more. If I'm looking for something a little less healthy I really enjoy the beefeater. Piles of roast beef and au jus. Wonderful! Plus, if you want to eat healthier and the people you are dining with don't, Jason's Deli is the perfect option. If you have a child who has a difficult time eating their entire meal they might be persuaded to eat it all for the free soft-serve ice cream offered. I have never had bad service at this Jason's. The staff is always nice and professional. Many have gone out of their way to make my dining experience worthwhile. The only downsides I can see to Jason's is the fact that the menu often makes it sound as though a menu item is rather healthy but if you read the nutrition you will realize it isn't. The downside I can see to this Jason's Deli is at lunch time the seating fills up and often you are left standing around waiting for other patrons to leave. read more

I only said three stars because Jason's deli isn't my favorite place but just ok. My daughter and I went because we were seeing a moving last night and it was the closest. I had the salad bar and soup ( which the chicken tortilla was really good, should of just had that)..... The salad bar is your basic salad bar. Now back in the day when I ate cheese and arch then it was good...... Now I'm dairy free and used to having my vegan cheese at home when I eat salad.. So a salad w only veggies and Italian dressing seems lacking.... Not Jason's deli's fault that they don't have vegan cheese and gluten free croutons or crackers.. Hint.. Hint! My daughter had the grilled cheese sandwich and apples, which was good. She really loved the bread, was wheat with seeds in it. The price for everything was $13.07 ... Which is quite affordable. The staff was really nice and very helpful...but, the bathroom wasn't clean. My daughter said there was dried pee on the floor (which I confirmed and waited myself to use the restroom at the theatre). If I was back in the area for a movie I would eat here again... I at least have gf bread to choose from for a sandwich. read more
