Before reading this review, I want to clarify that my review is on the Jasper Building and Management (Managed by Greystar). This review is not direct what-so-ever towards the day-to-day operation staff at Jasper (Valets, Concierge, Mailroom, Maintenance, etc...), as they are all AMAZING and are the ONLY ONES that make the resident experience better. This review is for Greystar Management and Jasper's Leasing Office Management.
I've been a resident at Jasper since early 2019 when it was managed by Crescent Heights. I moved into a room of a unit with years of tenure. It had great amenities - daily cleaning (always smelled fresh), nice decorations, scents at the door when you walk in, offered paid 3rd party services like dog walking, car maintenance, car detail, laundry, etc... Since being sold and Greystar taking over in mid 2019 as the Property Manager, amenities started to go away... Hallways smelled less and less clean (noticeably) and the aforementioned services basically discontinued. It seems that our security staff have downsized as well - I don't believe we have a dedicated security guard anymore. Overall, the luxury, service, care, and value of the building was not the same as when I first moved in in early 2019. For example, the day before Thanksgiving 2019, the heat in the building went out, leaving everyone without heat. It took almost a week to offer Residents a temporary source of heating (space heaters) to a dwelling unit!
When COVID-19 started to directly impact San Francisco, other residential buildings started to put prevention protocol in place - hand sanitizers, door stoppers, signs, etc... To my surprise, Jasper didn't do anything. In early March, I sent an email to Jasper Management (Greystar Staff) notifying them of what I've seen around town and to offer a friendly recommendation to provide wipes or hand sanitizers at the doors and elevators for the safety of the staff and residents. I even offered to help research/purchase given a budget. When I casually ran into the Property Manager (at the time) in the elevator one day, I was told there was no legal obligation to do anything for COVID-19 precaution/prevention. I explained briefly my email and asked her to review my proposal. To the day this review was submitted, there has been no email response. I do believe that a Landlord and Property Manager should do what is reasonable to protect their staff and residents from harm, including this pandemic.
Additionally, I would like to share my personal experience during my Lease Renewal. Prior to signing my lease, I looked online and saw that Jasper rent prices had decreased, I'm assuming due to the start of COVID globally. I should have screenshot and emailed management, but I decided to go downstairs and ask to quickly resolve the situation, as I wanted my rent price matched to the current market. Long story short, I was rudely told it was a typo on the website and that those OBVIOUSLY were not the prices at Jasper. Therefore, I signed the Lease Renewal in good faith. I have recently come to find that Residents have been offered those rent prices and there are people that have recently moved in at floors a lot higher than mine at a lower prices. When I recently brought this issue up to new Apartment Management, I was basically told "tough luck."
My experience at Jasper started out amazing, but quickly started going downhill when they transitioned from Crescent Heights to Greystar as the Property Manager. In my opinion, the prior Property Manager, who recently left Jasper for another project, let a lot fall through the cracks during the Greystar transition and it now seems like a lot more units are moving out than in. Personally, for me, I renewed at Jasper because it wasn't "that bad" yet, but if I would have known that our luxury apartment building would do pretty much nothing to help take precaution for the residents and staff, I would have not renewed. For the amount of rent that is paid, I completely understand shutting down common area amenities, but I think to have provided minimal prevention precaution at a building with 320 units is not doing what is reasonable to protect residents and staff from the harm of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After a lot of complaints, around early April, they finally put up a couple signs, taped the floor, and provided all staff PPE (Valets, Concierge, etc...). It wasn't until mid April that they installed ONE hand sanitizer machine for the entire building of 320 units.
Don't get me wrong... when I first moved into Jasper, the first few months, I was raving! I know that it can get back there, but unfortunately, for now, in my opinion, I have the complete opposite feeling as when I first moved in. Again, As I mentioned in the beginning of my post, day-to-day operation staff at Jasper (Valets, Concierge, Maintenance, etc.) are AMAZING and they are the only ones that actually provide 5+ Star service with a 0 Star Building/Management. read more
