A cozy, family-friendly establishment at the south end of Serra Mesa as you take the hill down toward Friar's Road. I came by for the first time with my dad this morning to try it out. We were met with a warm welcome and a friendly ask to be patient, as it was quite busy when we showed up. The service and atmosphere are top-tier for a one-off coffee spot, with candy dispensers, a print machine, counter seating, a nice floral wall design, and friendly service. For me, ratings, while they do account for service and atmosphere, do tend to ultimately rely mostly on the quality of the product or service. I'm going to give Java Garden 4/5 stars while acknowledging their high standards of customer service. I landed at 4/5 because we tried the drip coffee, americano, cold brew, and plain latte. I think the latte was the best of the bunch. The americano and cold brew were both decent, but the espresso was a bit less smooth than I've found at comparable shops like The Keep, The Forum, and Finjan. Such a cute and cozy café! They offer homemade pastries made by a local baker, along with light bites, breakfast options, and of course -- coffee. I ordered an iced vanilla breve latte ($9) and a gingerbread latte ($8). Both were really good, though the breve felt a bit pricey. Coffee: Honestly one of my favorite cafes in San Diego. Extremely unassuming, given its hole-in-the-wall location. David's Roasting is served here, and all their coffee is freshly brewed and delicious. Recommend the cafe au lait. Food: Egg & Cheese Croissant Panini was so good I actually went back the day after to get it again. Solid breakfast choice on the way to work. Service: Kari is the best! Goes out of her way to provide outstanding service. Also very friendly and gets to know regular customers by name (she remembered mine a week or so after only telling her once, despite the many regulars). Military discounts are honored. I love this small business coffee shop. I recently returned and, for the first 6, their match latte. I usually have their terrific cortado. I had the match latte with and cranberry orange scone by "Live, Love, Laugh." The match latte was great. I had it hot with a warmed up scone. The matcha flavor was great. They use a quality, non sweetened ceremonial grade matcha. I had them add a touch of honey and make it with whole milk. The creaminess was just right, and the matcha was not bitter in any way. It's a well-balanced matcha latte. The scone was great, too. It offered that perfect density and flavor. It came with little bits of orange and dried cranberries, which were great. I can't wait to try the vanilla scone. You have to be impressed with a small family run business like this one. Everyone is always very friendly and very welcoming! Horrible customer service!! I went 10 minutes before closing to get a drink and a pastry. The Brista with "green hair" full filled my order and my drink was 1/3 full. I stopped by and got a delicious matcha latte. Their matcha powder is delicious and does not come pre filled with sugar but they do offer to add their homemade syrup to sweeten if you'd like. My friends girlfriend started working at the Blonden Salon and the owner stated that we should definitely try this place out, so we decided to give it a shot and see what they had to offer. Once I walked in the atmosphere was amazing! They had a garden theme and plants everywhere. It gave off a warm and homey vibe. The have alternative milk options (almond, oat). The flavor is great. They carry Crumbs pastries. My family is a fan of the lemon bar. I've gone multiple times and the service has been consistently great - warm, friendly, patient. There are a few tables inside and some outdoor on the patio. If I could choose zero stars I would! I went in earlier with my sister to try this new place. Soon as we walk in everyone stares us down, including the barista. There's an old white man sitting that seems like a regular and he proceeds to make a slick racist joke (insinuating we live in the ghetto) and the barista laughs. I also laugh because I'm not sure how to react. I've never experienced this before. After that he proceeds to say to the barista, "we have a new language due to YOU KNOW WHO". Found this by accident when my usual coffee shop was closed unexpectedly, and glad I did! It's really cute - small, maybe 10 tables between the inside & back patio. This is great for me because it's quiet so I can work. They have free wifi for customers. The back patio is great - cute string lights, a comfortable long bench seat, good for working. Good size drink menu, the usual coffee shop options. I got a dirty Chai latte & asked for it spiced vs sweet, and they nailed it. I got almond milk, they have a few other dairy free options. Small food menu, bagel with cream cheese & a couple breakfast sandwiches, plus some cute pastries. I got the havarti & egg breakfast panini, it's on a croissant and really tasty. The service is sweet & helpful without being overbearing, feels very easy to just hang quietly & work without it feeling awkward when it's not busy. Will absolutely be coming back. read more
