I'm a fan! Found this coffee shop through a Yelp Elite event. I went back and met with my book club twice here. It is a great location to sit and work, people-watch, read or just enjoy a good cuppa and a bite. I took a friend yesterday for a pre-flight meal and beverage. He liked the place too. We both ordered breakfast. I had the steamed breakfast and he ordered the breakfast sandwich. We both raved about our meals. The man who was working the counter yesterday was lovely. He was swamped with customers and I think most of us ordered breakfast. He was cool and calm and reassured us he would get our beverages and food out to us in a timely fashion and he did. I initially chose Subterranean based off of the sandwich menu. My daughter is pescatarian and there are several vegetarian options as well as tuna salad. The turkey and Brie sandwich sounded very good. When we got there I was a little surprised by how dark it was inside but it is called subterranean so maybe that's why. The people working behind the counter greeted us and took our orders. We found a seat but had to wipe off the table ourselves and switch out a broken chair with another vacant table. I was surprised at how dirty and messy the place was. There was no line before or after us and the employees were chatting the whole time while leaning on the counter. Are there no brooms? Crumbs were literally crushed under my sandals. Once we sat they called our name for our order. This is when I wish I had not tipped earlier. Tips are for service. If you're not serving you don't require a tip. My sandwich was fine. I enjoyed it. My daughter ordered the tuna melt. The description says pumpernickel bread and mozzarella cheese it was served open faced on white bread with Swiss that never fully melted. The most odd thing was the large chunks of carrots in the tuna salad. Very off putting to bite onto a sandwich that you think will be soft and there are large bits of hard carrots in it. The drinks weren't great. About half of the tables were single people on devices with no food or drinks on their table except for one guy. One guy sat at the couch and took off his shoes. The staff stayed behind the counter chatting the whole time. When we were done my daughter asked if we should bus our table. I couldn't see a station but she asked and they pointed to it and said it would be great if we bussed the table ourselves. I expected something different, clean at least. read more

I feel like this is one of those places that only like their regulars. I came during the weekend around 9 or 10. Parking is horrible even in the morning. There were people sitting inside but no one at the counter ordering. I came with my mom and I got a strawberry lemonade. My mom had questions and looking for recommendations but the girl was not kind and pretty much said "yea it's good" to everything. She ended up getting a matcha, but I wasn't feeling it and told her we could eat somewhere else. On the bright side our drinks were delicious. I'm not really a lemonade person but this lemonade was so good! Made fresh and I can't describe it but it was like frosty/ blended. No ice. My mom loved her matcha. Despite the vibes and the parking, I actually would come back for the lemonade. Unfortunately all my pictures are gone but hopefully I go back soon to take some more. read more

This place has a lot of character. It's huge for a coffee shop. They have lots of food too. People were playing chess on the fee chess tables. It definitely fits the neighborhood. I rarely write a negative review. Also want to preface that maybe it was the wrong time I went in. A Sunday, in North Park, right after lunch. Waited more than 40 min for a smoothie. Had to ask the workers if maybe we got skipped? There was definitely a slow long line when we got in there so again maybe we just got there at the wrong time? Was hoping to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere but my friend and I stood at the counter just waiting for which seemed like forever. Maybe next time the staff can do a better job at asking what we ordered instead of us standing there awkwardly. Nice to see my friend though! Maybe I'll give it another chance since I live in the area, but unfortunately there are a ton of coffee spots and my espresso machine at home so I can grab some local coffee to go. There was an evening function here, here's how my experience went. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking, metered parking, garage parking. You got choices but it's gets pretty packed in (NO)rth (PARK). Seating: Inside seating, generally plenty of room, generally for 40 people. Vibes: North Park is a gem, one of the many wonderful pockets of San Diego - from the good eats and activities. The spot itself is pretty nice and spacious. I dig the mix of local and eclectic art. Great place to study or catch up with a friend. FOOD: Strawberry Matcha (Recommend) Deeelicious. Matcha is usually earthy and bitter but the strawberry concentration gives it a nice sweet mix. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Gene was great. He was friendly and knowledge about the menu. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Fantastic. Great choices, delicious drinks, reasonable prices, and a pleasant experience. Though I came here during a non-regular time/experience, I still felt like I got a good pulse of it. I do have a lowkey soft spot for this spot as they do got some Filipino flavors here. Yes there are numerous coffee shops in SD but this ranks pretty high on my list. This place is always busy and I've never felt the "local" service or vibe if that makes sense, but I decided to come back to order a sandwich and the lovely young man behind the counter was the sweetest, most helpful person ever (gen z kid with dark hair). He recommended me a drink that I absolutely loved, and the sandwich (which he himself made) was great. Stopped in here for coffee & food on a Sunday. I ordered the spinach and cheese quiche, which came with a spicy red sauce. My boyfriend had a sandwich. Overall, I thought my quiche was really good & high quality. The sauce was great. My Ube drink was good. The sandwich was apparently okay, but nothing too special. I would say the prices are honestly kind of steep. There were no prices on the menu which was annoying. My small quiche was like $11?!? Really should've been like $7 or $8 for how small it was. The cashier at the front was a girl who wasn't very smiley or cheerful. She was kind of monotone, and we were still annoyed that there weren't any prices depicted on the menu besides add-ons before we ordered. I would knock a star down for just service. The place is still pretty big, and I like that there are spots to work from your computer. The tables had chess boards which were a nice touch. Very hipster north park vibe. The ground and venue was kind of dirty and old though & I think they should do some renovations relatively soon. I really enjoyed my lunch here. The cashier was very patient as we ordered. We took a pretty long time deciding what to order but again she was patient and accommodated any substitutions or additions we had for our order. Once we ordered, there were plenty of clean tables available for us to sit and enjoy our food at. The food came out pretty quick; about less than 10 minutes and one of the employees brought it out to us. When it came out it was hot and delicious. My sandwich had lots of veggies and was loaded with turkey that I added to it. It had a little drizzle of olive oil and I think oregano on top of the bread which were not listed on the menu, but added the perfect touch of flavor without making the bread soggy or greasy. If you don't mind the extra calories and healthy fats, definitely do not tell them to leave it out! I also loved the atmosphere in the café. It was very chill and laid-back. I appreciated the fact that they had lots of different board games and fun card games there for you to play. My family and I had a great time trying out a new card game and now have a new game to add to our family game night. The vibes inside this cafe are super chill. It's def a place you can grab a coffee and chat with friends or study. They offer pastries and sandwiches here too! When I arrived, the place looked spacious but it was mostly empty, maybe it was because it was the day before Thanksgiving. I had tried other nearby places and they had line at the door so this was a bit telling. The decor didn't help either, it's dark, with red-painted walls, mismatched furniture, and minimal natural light. Or at least it's not my vibe. Some might like it. The real disappointment and main reason for my review was the food and cleanliness (refer to pictures). I ordered a breakfast burrito, and it was one of the worst I've had. The bacon wasn't fully cooked, and the salsa tasted like it came from a can, with big chunks of tomato and a poor ratio. To make matters worse, when I asked for a fork, I was given one that clearly hadn't been cleaned, it had chocolate or some kind of residue on the back, which was a major red flag for their hygiene standards. This completely threw me off, and I ended up leaving reminder of the food untouched. The only good part was the nice cashier who took my order, which is why I'm giving this place two stars instead of one. I hope they take feedback like this seriously specially around kitchen hygiene as this is absolutely not acceptable to pass dirty dishes to your customer. This coffee shop is super cute. I loved the merchandise they were selling in the front of the store. I was excited to try this place but when I came in there was no one around at all. I waited about ten mins and even called them before someone finally appeared from the back. My drink was delicious but way too hot! I had to wait a long time and still burned my mouth. I stopped by around 1 PM on a Saturday after finding this spot through the Walkabout app, which offers local perks with a monthly subscription. With it, I got a complimentary Ube coffee--and it was seriously delicious. The space is super cute inside and a nice escape from the heat. There's plenty of seating, including tables with chess boards, which was a fun touch. The staff was incredibly friendly and made me feel welcome right away. Parking can be tricky, but that's just North Park. I'll definitely be back. read more

Let me start with saying staff was very nice and efficient and this seems like a great place to hangout as it's spacious with plenty of seating. I haven't tried the food so maybe that's helpful to the experience as well, but for coffee lovers... it's disappointing. I came here years ago and got an iced lavender latte, it wasn't good and I never planned to come back but it was nearby and I needed a fix. Recently, I got a flavored latte and an espresso shot, both were bad. Maybe it's old coffee, or maybe it's not properly grinded/ pulled but it tasted just like I remembered years ago: stale. The syrup is also sad and didn't do much to improve the experience- maybe making in house syrups would improve the experience (if not done already)! I think a little more care in crafting their coffee is needed- especially with so many other great coffee shops nearby. read more

I visited this place today to try something new and was disappointed. I went with 3 other people and was surprised when my total was $100 for 4 drinks and 4 breakfast items. It was a few items so I was not expecting it to be very cheap but the quality of the food and drinks definitely made me regret spending the $100. The food portions were very small and the drinks were not that good. The photos on yelp really had us excited about the ambiance but did not match upon arrival. The restrooms were very dirty and not stocked up with any paper. I am sad about this experience but I hope others have a better one! :) read more

I love the vibe of this coffee shop retro/vintage feel. Its super nostalgic with the decor setup, it's awesome and they have a pinball machine that I can play with. I'm always trying something new here. I got their matcha iced and it was super strong in caffeine content. It was really tasty. One of my favorite iced coffee is their white blackberry mocha, it's so good. One time I got really hungry and I order the Baja club sandwich, I was not disappointed. I thought the first drink sounded so strange!! But it was SO GOOD. really unique flavor. Both coffees were extremely flavorful, none of that watered down bs from a lot of places. We went with an iced coconut explosion, an iced white blackberry mocha, and two veggie bagels. It took nearly twenty minutes for our order to be completed, but we were in no rush. Though while we waited, we noticed that almost all of the tables and chair were either sticky or dirty. When we got our order, the drinks were lukewarm and somewhat underwhelming (possibly due to the temperature of the iced drinks). That aside, the bagels were great! read more

Cool ambience and definitely deserves more than a 3 star for ambience.... But the coffee (cafe au lait) was a little watery. Service was awful. 3 young girls worked and after we ordered, it's like they forgot what they were there for. We waited 45 minutes for two drinks while they talked about big problems behind the counter ... and they only started to make our order AFTER my husband went up and asked about them. Someone who came in way later than us ordered the same drink as my husband. When one of the girls called out the order, she failed to mention it was decaffeinated. Since we arrived and ordered before the other customer, my husband assumed it was his. Turns out it was the other customer's decaffeinated order so she had to make his order all over again. Always passed by this local coffee shop but today I was hungry and wanted to grab a bite and a coffee. I ordered a breakfast burrito and an espresso. The coffee was fine. Nothing to write home about but not overly bittet either. However the burrito was one of the worst burritos i have ever paid for in my life. Well the eggs inside were hot....the tortilla and everything else was cold. It felt like it just came out of the fridge. Very plain and not much taste.
