I absolutely love Java Girl! The selection of coffee is amazing! They are very much an international coffee shop with coffee selections from all over the world! My usual here is an oatmeal smoothie and almond croissant. I have also tried the chicken salad, lentil soup, chicken roll, and iced hot cocoa with an expresso shot! Everything here is amazing and I love how cozy it feels. I'm such a regular that when I walk in they start making my order without even asking! Love that type of customer service! A charming little spot in a neighborhood sorely in need of coffee establishments with character. The seating arrangement provides multiple cosy nooks and corners, as well as my personal favorite, the 4 wicker chairs outside facing the street. People-watcher's delight. The chalkboard menu offers a good selection of hot and cold coffees and teas. Surprisingly, this otherwise hipsteresque establishment serves all of it in paper cups, even for the to-stay crowd. While I would recommend this place for decent coffee and more than decent ambiance, they lose a star for lack of wifi and another for a $10 credit card minimum. read more

No wi-fi, and there's a sign requesting that phone calls be taken outside, leaving the atmosphere nice and slow. Coffee: Their self-serve coffee is very good, with two regular options (French/strong and a varietal roast), decaf, and a flavored. Don't know how often they brew the regulars, but they always tastes fresh and robust. Prices (for coffee) are very reasonable - $2.20 for a large. Know nothing about their food and teas, though they look tempting. More places like this please - people above Midtown on the east side need (good) coffee too! read more

An Upper East side joint that feels like an East Village transplant. Very cute bohemian vibe. The only place like it in the neighborhood. Tables are fairly close together and there's no wifi... so it's a good place to unplug and read a book or just relax for a bit and think about life, maybe even talk to an actual stranger. The staff are always attitude-free, and there's a vast tea selection, sweets and snacks. Coffee is good enough, and they also sell bags of their special blends. In warmer weather more seats are on the street, where people linger with their pooches. FYI: the place is pretty small, so if you are planning to meet a friend, you may not find a seat. read more

I've been to Java girl at least a dozen times now and my experience has been mixed. I'm torn by the fact that I love the little shop feeling, decor, and friendly staff, but more often than not my latte drinks are poorly made -- often atypically bitter and burnt. I noticed some staff seem to be better than others when making espresso drinks. I'd like to come more often but at this point, I'm afraid to gamble with quality of drinks. read more

Coffee shop on the UES. I had some time to kill waiting for my hotel check in so I figured I'd get some work done. The place smells like coffee which I loved. A few scattered table with benches along the walls made it a quaint little place. Got an iced coffee that was pretty good but I'm not a picky coffee drinker so can't rate it. There was a constant flow of people coming in and out. They place coffee shop music in the background that makes for a nice ambiance but might distract someone trying to study as I had ear plugs in and could still hear it. The one bad thing was that the benches along the wall were pretty uncomfortable. There are pillows but not something that was suitable to sit on. Overall a nice little shop with its own authentic feel. I'd recommend some cushions for the benches along the walls and a bit less volume on the music but I'd come back if I was in the neighborhood. read more

I have lived in this neighborhood for 20 years and can honestly say that this wonderful little coffee house, which replaced a long-time coffee store about 8 or 9 years ago, has brought so many people together. It has a wide variety of people that come in--students, sanitation workers (very funny guys), musicians, scientists and doctors, parents with their children, and not a few original characters. A huge assortment of coffees and teas (loose and bagged). The daily coffee-by-the-cup selections are two flavored coffees (which change) and two unflavored, strong and medium. I have the strong every day and it's excellent. In additiion there are a myriad of coffee specialty drinks. Although I typically do not get the coffee specialty drinks because I just drink my cups of joe, I have had them and the repeat customers who have been coming here for years and ordering those drinks tells me that they also are excellent. I do know that the owner will not allow new employees to make those drinks until they have consistently passed her stringent taste test. The food consists of homemade sandwiches, soups and salads, all of which I have had and love. The prices are very reasonable. Pastries are mostly from one bakery and are good as well--typically an assortment of croissants, muffins amd fruit pastries. Ocassionally some other baked goods from other local bakers are available and those are always great. The decor is sort of anti-slick. A mixed assortment of chairs and tables, with many throw pillows. Chalkboards and homemade menus. Many wonderful and varied gifts items. It does get crowded but, assuming the weather isn't too bad, there is plenty of room to sit outside and many people do every day. There is something about the layout of the place and the informal atmosphere that encourages conversations with those around you. So that in part is why it has become a great meeting place and introduced so many neighbors to each other. One of the best things about Java Girl is the great and unique gift baskets. stockings and specialty bags that they have on hand or will create. There are plenty of already prepared items that can be grabbed on the go for a party or dinner gift. Or, better yet, they will create a unique gift basket, etc., from the many great items in the shop--coffees, teas, mugs, chocolates, and so many other unique items. And the preparation and wrapping of the gifts is done with a personal touch, care and attention to detail that makes every one seem specially designed--because it really is. They will ship them anywhere. I Java Girl baskets for clients and I never fail to get a note commenting on how beautiful the gift was. Finally, the staff. I am biased because I go there every day and really consider each person on the staff a friend. But, I can say that one phrase that describes them is that they care about the customers that come in. Karina, Yulio, Jair, Gerry, Magdalena, Vanessa and Linda are "real" people, not a revolving door of clerks just doing a job. Simply put, it is a home away from home for a lot of people and a wonderful find for many others passing through the neighborhood. I did not give 5 stars only because it is not perfect--but what is? Great coffee and a nice, cozy informal atmospherewith a few seats outside for people watching. The staff is always friendly to me and I don't understand the problems that others mention. Coffee here is the deal. Fresh, hot and there are usually two kinds of regular hot, plus several flavored. Food however is a bit pricey for what it is. I won't recommend it for sandwiches or candy (one small 1.5" square of toffey is $2.50). There's not a lot of love -or food- put into the food. There's no wi-fi, and no power outlets that I could see. The place is small and often crowded -quite reasonably, I think, they don't want people staying and studying all day. So, as another reviewer noted, it's not always conducive to doing work. Still it's a unique coffee-and-chat spot and worth checking out. read more

Java Girl is my favorite coffee shop on the Upper East Side. I have been searching for a while, so stumbling upon it was quite the treat. There are wonderful, cozy window seats that are filled with beautiful pillows and light by quirky chandeliers made of tea bags. The entire place is unique in decor, and very cozy. I have written numerous papers in that window seat. There are signs asking patrons to take phone calls outside, collages of polaroids and customers, and sweet little doodles on the wooden tables. Everything is very homey, while still maintaining this cool "chic" vibe that is present in most Manhattan cafes. The coffee isn't in-you-face fancy, but it doesn't need to be because it is just good. Regular coffee? Free refills. They even put the pots out in the way that starbucks puts out sugar and milk; you can just go and help yourself. Again, this contributes the the whole "home-y" thing. The lattes don't have any intricate designs made of foam, but they are sweet and strong and do the trick. All in all, this place is great and serves every purpose that a coffee shop should: a place to sit, a cup to sip, and someone to help you get there (kind baristas!) Upper East Siders now have their own little nook to retreat to, too. read more

Here's the thing: Java Girl doesn't really have good coffee. There are four pots sitting on burners: one "medium" variety, one "strong" one, something flavored, and a decaf. Their selection of teas is more impressive than their coffee, and their rice pudding is delicious and very cinnamon-y, but that's as far as my praises go. Now let's do some maths. A small coffee at JG is $1.70. That's 70% more than a medium coffee at the cart on 66th and 2nd (review TK). If you want soy milk -- and I don't mean a soy milk based latte, just a tablespoon in your regular drip coffee -- they charge you an additional $0.50... which is about 30% the cost of the coffee itself. (Since when did the soybean, one of the most ridiculously widely grown crops in the US, become such a commodity? That will have to be another review...) If I were to stop at JG each morning before work for a small sub-par coffee with non-moo, I'd spend $66 in 6 weeks, and I'd have bought a total of 240 fluid oz. If I were to get the same coffee at the cart guy (who is much friendlier than the folks at JG, by the way), I'd pay $30 for 300 fluid oz. Even with some boxes of soymilk thrown in (say, another $6.00 over 6 weeks), I'm paying about half as much for more coffee and a nicer experience. Which would you choose? read more

This looked like a cute, funky little coffee shop, an we made the mistake of going for breakfast, not wanting to fall back on Starbucks. Bad move. - their coffee is prepared diner-style and left on burners for customers to pour themselves. Naturally, it tastes burned and gross, like bad diner coffee, or old Dunkin' Donuts brew. - the "fresh-squeezed" juice was not fresh; in fact it had turned, and tasted like turpentine. I alerted the owner, who shrugged and gave me a bottled juice. - the muffins, while served from a case as though made on the premises, were obviously bought at a grocery-store, or maybe Dunkin Donuts. - the servers were none too friendly, but given the bad food, I can understand the low morale. Okay, we've got to set a few things straight. I don't ever weigh in on my visits to places. I'm not really a yelper at all. That said, I have to stand up and defend Java Girl against some ridiculous reviews. As to some of the previous reviews: it's a coffee shop, folks. That's all. To live up to it's name, it only must have coffee and sell it. #1: no, it's not Starbucks, and thank god for that. It's independently owned and operated. No global domination here, and thank god for THAT. #2: What's with the complaints about seating? When did coffee shops become your personal living room? Yes Starbucks has the resources to support your every function for an entire day, but these people aren't a transnational corporation, so give em a break. There are complaints that hospital employees occupy the limited number of seats. Who do you think is their most regular customer? You, the squakwing Yelper who poo-poo's the minutiae of your every moment there? No. Their regulars are folks in the surrounding blocks and a lunch crowd. And if the small number of seats is a problem for you, might I welcome you to Manhattan? If it's still a problem because Starbucks can do it, might I suggest you move to Long Island? #3: If you are a hardcore Dunkin' Donuts fan, you probably won't prefer this place, no. If you prefer a store that feels like a truck stop to a store that feels like a, well, store, it's not your cup of tea (or java). The Dunkin across the street has horrible harsh lighting, laminate-plastic seating, sells Baskin Robbins ice cream 24 hours a day, and houses the homeless population of the entire East side for at least half of that. Apples v. Oranges! The owner is there very, very frequently; she knows the regulars and greets them warmly. She makes a point to employ people who know a LOT about coffee. If you want a $1 cup of coffee, go to DD. If you want a $6 coffee with a global impact, go to Starbucks. If you want an outlet for dissatisfaction with every detail of life, go to Yelp (oh you did), well maybe go to a therapist. If you want to buy your own beans, go to Java Girl. If you want to support a local business, go to Java Girl. If you want to meet new people who live in the area, go to Java Girl. If you want to ask about the differences between a Kona and an Arabica, go to Java Girl. Yes, the employees take forever to make the sandwiches, but that's because they actually MAKE them from fresh food. Your Starbucks employee gets it to you faster because it was made three weeks ago. Your DD employees can only offer you the Rainbow Sherbet. The place is cute. The employees know their stuff. This place helps create a community of neighbors amongst the anonymity of the city. It doesn't exist to satisfy your every whim; it DOES sell decent coffee at an okay price from a knowledgeable staff, without contributing to the horrible corporate culture of America. And the chairs are wood. It's of value. Back off. No wonder they call you Yelpers. Jeez. read more

Honestly the best coffee I've had in New York. The only downside is that it's a $10 minimum for credit cards, which I understand, but I'll only go here if I have cash so I don't go all the time. They rotate their drip coffees and have a different rotating flavor - which is unique and awesome in my opinion. The decor is adorable and you really get an authentic coffee shop feel. First they yell at me because their door doesn't close on it's own & I'm last in line, then they make me get a $10 gift card to pay for my coffee bc it's under $10 charge, then they won't let me sit & eat my bagel bc it's "outside food." Well they don't sell bagels so I cudnt get it there. They're basically screaming at me to leave, trying to loose a customer. Like even if they do have an outside food policy, don't u think after the other two predicaments they shud let me off the hook I mean jeez, fuck that place. What I know is that there fresh ground coffee selection is awesome. You can take whole beans or have it ground for you. So if your in the neighboorhood and looking for coffee go on in. I go to Hunter so I'm always looking for coffee shops other then cookie cutter Starbucks. So, my cousin & I decided to stop by Java Girl. It looks like a little hole in the wall with gems inside. Starting out with the positives, cute little place in an unexpected area; mixed matched decor. I didn't try their food because it looks really "bland" but I tried their chocolate covered items by the register. I had a 1/4 pound ($3.75) mix of chocolate covered cherries/blueberries/pistachios & they were great! Def. a must have. Now the bad, the workers looked bored and as if they didn't want to be there. I ordered a Cafe Au Lait & I've definitely had better. There was too much foam on top for something that's half steamed and the coffee tasted a little watered down & burnt. My cousin ordered a Chai Latte & it tasted like a watered down apple cinnamon drink. She didn't finish it which I don't blame her for. If I passed by again I would stop by for some chocolate covered goodies but nothing I would go out of the way for. read more
