I found myself rather disappointed with this coffee/sandwich shop. First of all, it attempts to evoke a relaxed, homey feeling what with the random chairs and pillows and magazines, but instead gives off a messy and unkempt vibe. The people behind the counter are a bit odd too; I did not order a drink with my sandwich and the cashier kept on asking me if I was sure...of course I'm sure. I don't know..it's a minor detail but it annoyed the hell out of me. Secondly, after my friend and I ordered, it took forever for the sandwiches to come. One was a pressed sandwich, but there are plenty of other establishments who can do it in a quarter of the time, and the place wasn't even crowded. No matter. My sandwich with swiss and a bunch of vegetables and balsamic dressing on wheat bread was good though boring at times. My friend's turkey, mozarella, and pesto sandwich, girlled, was much better. The bathroom is another curiosity. The door, despite the presence of a hook, does not close all the way, leaving a large crack open for all customers to watch one piss. Furthermore, there is a huge wooden box of sorts hovering over the sink, making it next to impossible for one to reach their hands under, turn on the sink, and wash his hands with the soap coming from the empty sauce bottle up top. I live in the neighborhood and have passed by often, so I was very excited to visit. I finally had a chance to stop by today. What a cute little coffee shop! The interior was warm and inviting, from the cozy-looking seating area, to the decorations left over from Christmas, to the fragrant bins of coffee beans lining the walls. I picked up a cafe mocha to drink at home, and as I walked out of the shop, I noticed how light my cup felt. When I got home and opened the lid to the cup, I was sorely disappointed to find that the cup was only 2/3 full! The drink itself was not bad. As much as I wanted to like this place and as much as I want to support small businesses like this, I'm not sure if I'll be going out of my way to come back here. read more

In a world of starbucks and dunkin donuts on every other corner this place is a breath of fresh air people! Funky little shop with a few tables crammed in and a couple of lounge chairs outside. The iced coffee is perfect, as is the blackberry iced tea. The hot coffee is self serve and they have an assortment, I go for the strongest. The pastries are nice, in particular the pear or apple. The croissants are flakey and buttery. I often will buy a plain croissant and a container of their very delish chicken salad and make myself a sandwich ;) The ladies who own the place are so nice and they take pride in their shop, it's so cute. They giftwrap really nicely if you want to make a gift of coffee or tea. Be forewarned credit minimum is $10. Since I frequent the place (and rarely carry cash) I bought myself a gift card and refill it via my credit or debit card. ;) read more

Java Girl is a small and cozy coffee shop more appropriately described as hipster than not. They have a good assortment of caffeinated drinks, including several iced tea options. If you like croissants, oh my goodness, you must try theirs. It's perfectly flaky on the outside without being too crispy. The inside is buttery, doughy goodness. Just the way I like it. I'm drooling as I write this. I am no expert on coffee, so I can't speak to their coffee quality, but their mocha iced coffee was yummy, and my friend said her hibiscus iced tea was quite good. I wouldn't recommend Java Girl as a study spot. It's too noisy for that. Patrons converse freely in normal speaking volumes in a small space. But it is very comfortable for a date or for catching up with friends. There are large comfy cushions on bench seats and a scatter of about 4 regular cafe tables with chair pairs. They also have outdoor seating. I believe they have a $10 credit card minimum. They sell a variety of coffee beans in big burlap sacks (so granola!) and the entire coffee shop smells like coffee bean heaven. On a residential block of East 66th Street sits a neighborhood institution since 1998, Java Girl. It is unassuming on the outside yet warm and charming on the inside. The entrance is lined with barrels of coffee beans, bags of cookies, and gifts, while the walls are stocked with tea leaves and coffee mugs aplenty. Mismatched antique-y chairs, pillow laden window seats, photo collages on the walls, and creaky wooden floors make for the quintessential quaint coffee shop experience. Java Girl is small and cozy so there is not much room for indoor seating. There are about 5 or 6 small tables placed very closely together and while wi-fi is free, electrical outlets are not plentiful. Weather permitting there is also limited outdoor seating. Flavored brewed coffees are self-serve and the espresso bar prepares a standard array of beverages. (FYI Soy drinks are pleasantly made with vanilla silk!) A refrigerated case of soups, salads, sandwiches and fresh juices is stationed in front alongside large glass jars of chocolate covered goodies. Charming, cozy, warm = cramped. For the sake of courtesy, stay away if you have just eaten a monster burrito or hit up an unlimited brunch, because the tables and chairs barely fit, let alone the people. After downing several cups of tea, I was dying for a bathroom but there just didn't seem to be enough space for one. Barista was a bit stiff and seemed to have a problem explaining what loose tea leaf was, but maybe I was just having problems digesting my monster carnitas burrito and couldn't understand basic English. Also, do not get the egg salad sandwich with dill on croissant. Utterly flavorless. The dill was nowhere to be found. I know cilantro gets a bad rep because certain members of the populace think it tastes like bitter soap, but on the whole, spices are our friends! I have just had a weekend of "meh" places and this was one of them. I don't mean this place was bad necessarily, but just read my review. I always drove past this place on my way back from New Jersey and it seemed so cool that I had to try it. The inside does look pretty cool - it's decorated with their wide variety of teas, coffee, and random photographs. I was also super excited to see their coffee/espresso beverage menu because it was a little more than just the standard stuff. My boyfriend got a mint mocha and I had a regular mocha. Both, unfortunately, were very bland. I could barely taste any mocha and he could barely taste any mint or mocha. The espresso itself was ok I think, but the barista also over steamed the milk. I couldn't believe how bland it was considering I had such high expectations. They also had some goodies (pastries, chocolate confections, etc.). We bought these chocolate covered blueberries which were awesome and probably the saving grace of this place. As I mentioned, I really liked the atmosphere and wouldn't have mind hanging out there for a bit if we could have. Well, as you should do when visiting a new place, we tried things Java Girl was known for - mocha, chai, and a good ole cup of coffee. All satisfied as good as anything and then some. Not to mention the croissants/pastries were great and the mood and decor of the place is awesome. Tips - if you are used to more classic versions of chai, Java Girl's are sweet, so ask for less vanilla/sweetener if you're going to try a chai creme. Cute little local coffee shop with a quirky vintage/antique-shop-like vibe. I grabbed a small coffee for about $3, and their flavor of the day was Chocolate Pretzel. I really enjoyed the flavor; it wasn't too strong like some flavored coffees, just had a subtle chocolate flavor with a hint of salt. They do pretty latte art as well. The drinks are pricier than Dunkin, but about the same as Starbucks. The downside is that even though it's such a cute shop with a great vibe, it's super small and crowded inside and each table could only fit one laptop with no room for books. There weren't even any tables available at all when I was there. It looks inviting, but realistically, it would be really difficult to stay for a while and work. I keep stumbling across this small coffee cafe on 66th St. between 1st & 2nd Ave. This morning my girlfriend & I decided to pop in and treat ourselves for a morning cup o' joe. In the corner you find a small seating, mismatched chairs, pillow throws, 2 breakfast nooks along with a few wobbly tables. Definitely small but charming for sure. We ordered 2 coffees, A Vanilla Chai Latte for me, while my girlfriend ordered a Vanilla Creme Cocoa. The coffee barista wasn't overly warm but she was friendly enough. The Vanilla Chai Latte was a little sweeter than usual, and just not enough Chai spice. The Vanilla Creame Cocoa was softer on the palate and you were able to appreciate the vanilla creme & cocoa flavors distinctly. My small Chai & her Large Vanilla Creame totaled $7.00. Just about what I expect to pay for coffee on the Upper East Side. Looking around the cafe you could appreciate just how much they tried to pack in such a small area. They had prepacked soups & desserts. A Barrels of Coffee & Teas. Also a few French Presses, Tea pots & coffee novelties. I also spotted some Java Girl branded items. However, I was very disappointed with my drink and the transaction process. I paid with my credit card and as the barista moved to return my credit card, I reached out to take it from her, but instead she just slapped it on the counter. That was so weird. Is it a cultural thing? On to the drink. She prepared my shots of espresso and once they'd finished, she went to get the milk, then came back to stream it. The shots sat for a couple minutes before she added the milk. The result was a very bitter flat white. And the dairy tasted like butter, but not in a pleasant way. I walked past this cafe at least 50 times before I decided to go in. I was always intrigued by it because of all the people that would sit outside the cafe to chat and sip on coffee. It also just looked like a cute and intriguing rustic cafe. I decided to pop in one day, and the second I walked in I was cast into this coffee scent cloud. The amazing coffee smell was coming from the bags of coffee beans on one side of the cafe. I was overwhelmed with the number of choices and decided to go with the drink that was featured on the chalkboard in front of the cafe. It was a coconut almond latte and it was so delicious. I had my coworkers all try it and they went later on in the day for their own cups. I would definitely want to go back for a cup of their coffee to go back to the basics so that I can appreciate their coffee. read more

Owner is very unhappy person she was talking with customer loudly and my phone rang-it was my dr. Coffee place is near Sloan's Kettering. She should just keep her mouth shut talking about me to her customers. I wasn't even on phone that long she kept pointing to no cell phone sign. Is it really fair for people to talk to each other and I take a call and speak very low ? You tell me. I have bought several gift cards. Coffee is ok, lattes are terrible she must use the cheapest espresso on the market. Place is empty it's a 110 degree day, however I had to stop in for a ice tea it's not bad. I stayed for a while and bought 2 drinks and a light lunch of tuna (was ok) and chips. My mocha was nearly cold and the staff could've been a little warmer so this prevented the 5th. But all else was really good. I really like the variety of things to nibble on from tuna salad, egg salad, pastry, even soups and other quick and ready items that I assume will heat up for you. Great coffee spot on the Upper East Eide near Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Will grind coffee beans for you from a variety of flavors, or you can order a hot or cold coffee beverage. Also, cookies and other treats available to buy at counter. I went with simple iced coffee with skim milk and found it very, very good. Not bitter. Inside, the decor is rustic and a bit small. Java Girl is a small cafe tucked between 1st and 2nd avenue. I used to come for my morning coffee all the time and the occasional pastry. Their iced coffee is strong and well-brewed and the wide selection of teas is great for a lighter drink. It seems like a very neighborhood-homey place and the photos of the owner and different patrons through the years is endearing and unique. However, the cafe is a little more on the cozier end than I generally prefer, especially with the kitschy decor. It's a great place to quietly catch up with a friend for a bit of time but there can sometimes be a less than harmonious mix between patrons there who seem to want silent reading time and those who want a more relaxed atmosphere. In such a small space, it can get very uncomfortable very quickly. Needless to say, I wouldn't be coming here to camp out and churn out some work. Depending on who you get, the baristas have been a mix of friendly, abrupt, and deer-in-headlights but I have yet to have a bad drink. There's no wifi and AC is sometimes weak in the summer. There is a 10 dollar minimum for credit cards but if you work/live in the area, you can get around this by purchasing a giftcard. The upfront cost is a dollar for the card but if you add $20 on the card, they credit you the cost of one small coffee so it does negate out. The only downside is you have to finish off your card eventually. read more

Their coffee is strong enough to wake me up (there is a strong and a mild option for the cafe au lait), and their chai is on the spicier side. The seats along the windows are lined with cushions, and provide a perfect place to while away the hours with a hot beverage and a stroopwafel or a biscotti, and to "unwittingly" overhear your neighbors' conversations. They have a $10 minimum for credit card payment (VISA, MC and AMEX), but will accept credit cards for a lower amount if you agree to a $1 surcharge. They also offer a Java Girl prepaid card, which you can use for your purchases here; and if you put $20 on the card upon initial purchase, you get a free coffee. read more

I got a hot chai today without first looking at the sizes of the cups. I had only done so after ordering and thought to myself, "Oh, FIGS." At $3.40 for a small and $4.00 for a large chai, with the large being MORE than twice as big as the small cup, the large is definitely more cost effective. (No comments from the Peanut Gallery about how expensive the chai is in general. Nothing wrong with a little indulgence now and then...) Pro: PHENOMENAL chai. I got their cold chai a few weeks back when the air in NYC was a thick, moisture-rich smog soup, but now that the cold, autumnal air took over this little island with a snap of the fingers, seemingly, their hot chai was on my mind today, and it was a treat! This place is very cute! Just went in for the 2nd time. I can see it anywhere in the world (upstate NY, California, Paris, Japan...). It's a hoppin' place with 4 comfy looking mesh outdoor chairs outside facing the street which patrons were lounging on, and a cozy, romantically lit interior. And they have a couple of GLUTEN-FREE treats! Their warm CHAI is da bomb, and as Allison C. mentioned (shout out!) get the large. Today I got their ICED MOCHA! ($4.50?, size similar to a Starbuck's Grande) Wow is it sweet, but I transformed it into a hearty blended drink. How, you ask? There selection of what they would call fresh brewed coffee is limited to 2 or so pots on burners. I am not a big fan of foofy flavored coffee of which one of the two usually is. People seem to love this place ..."it's so cute"..."oh look at the Central American decor"...as they are snuggled up to their little ity bitty cutesy table drinking what they think is really good coffee. Well the coffee is OK and the service is sub par. I get a sense the Java Girl staff think they are better then they really are. Bottom line on Java Girl is it's overrated and overpriced. read more

The coffee wasnt bad and the Tates chocolate chip cookie was a treat, but when you feel like your inconviniencing the barista when your the only customer in line suddenly Tates doesnt look as tasty. A lovely local coffee shop in Upper East. I used to go to a local place in Hell's Kitchen . Since I moved to the east side, it has been a struggle to find a reliable coffee shop. Java Girl is exactly what I need. It's not as commercial as Starbucks and they have a variety of beans available for purchase. They can grind the beans for me since I use Keurig. The prices are not bad either. I will definitely go back for more delicious coffee beans. read more
