Saturday afternoon south of everywhere and I can get a regular drip coffee? came across an outburst of modern life as I was running out of coffee and figured I should while I could so I did and got a cannoli along with... really would have been satisfied with open and today's coffee so even in the middle of pre-closing side work this was way way better. coffee was recent and good but needed a little reheat which meant blasting my traveler with the frother-steamy thing from the cappuccino-ator... and that was the absolute crazy thing for the month. SO. COOL!!! ...other than that it's a nice enough spot for a cup of goodness and a bite in what will soon be a sea of humanity but for now is still a stone's throw off :-) pleasant, helpful help, comfortable surroundings, and open on Saturday afternoon. read more

Believe me when I say... this place has THE BEST Muffins. They are baked fresh, and chances are when you walk in, they'll be putting some fresh pastries into the case. I've been visiting for the last 2 years, and recently, there seems to have been an ownership change. I assure you, they still serve up the same delicious high-qaulity baked goods. It's always an amazing customer experience and we end up picking up way too many pastries! The spinach pastry, as well as the strawberry and cheese are highly recommended. Flaky, crusty, perfection. The Grinch May Have Stolen Christmas but he sure was super moist and flavorful from Java's Brewing Bakery. No seriously! This cake was a hit at our Ugly Sweater gathering and our guests are still singing the baker's praise. As every baker knows, its hard to find a cake that looks good and taste good - usually one suffers for the other however not my Grinch cake - It looked and tasted yummy! Its was perfectly topped with the right amount of frosting and accomodated all my 25 guests with leftovers for the following week. The service here is suberb! I have driven past this place for sometime wanting to check it out. I went there hoping to find a cake or a piece of cake to celebrate a special day. I did not see any cakes. Upon walking up to the counter, a worker (male) came from seating down at the main dining area to behind the counter. I do have to say he did not go and wash his hands. I purchased three muffins (French toast, cranberry and another flavor). I also purchased a feta and spinach pastry. A young lady who seemed to be in training came from the back and completed my purchase. My husband said the feta and spinach pastry was really good. He said the muffins were dense. I did try all three muffins and agreed they were dense. They were flavorful though. When paying I was asked if I was paying by cash or credit card, I asked what difference that would make in terms of pricing. At that moment I saw the sign on the counter. No discount was given, I was told I would save on not paying the service fees. Time will tell if I go back. read more

Good iced mocha and the coffee cake muffin was fresh and not dry. The decor is very cool and there is plenty of space to do a little work or just relaxing. The owner is super friendly and helpful. There are many great baked goods and a good selection of breakfast and lunch items. It's not my favorite place for coffee or baked goods but it is open on Monday. read more

I don't know what happened, but this place has gone downhill fast. A previous visit, the service was strange and terrible. We gave it another try. Granted, we went in 25 minutes before closing. The young gal behind the counter was not happy we were there. No greeting and all lights were turned off in displays. They had items available, but we couldn't see them. It was awkwardly obvious our later arrival wasn't appreciated. We won't be back. Such a sad shame. We used to come nearly every week. We were always greeted warmly, no matter when we arrived. Folks working there genuinely took pride in their job and the establishment. Now it is in the hands of people JUST doing their job, looking at their watch in anticipation of leaving. In fairness, I decided to give this popular little coffee joint a second try after a lackluster first visit. This time around, service was friendlier and coffee was better; however, the "fresh-baked daily" bakery items still left us shaking our heads as the muffins we tried were dry and unspectacular. Idk, Maybe our standards were set too high after visits to two great local French bakeries - the Sunflour Baking Co and Renaissance Patisserie - the prior two days. The lounging and dining area has both couches and chairs which are very comfortable and encourage lingering. The obligatory widescreen TV also looks down from on high. A hodgepodge of other items are also offered for sale throughout the store. Three stars might be a little too generous, if allowed I'd rate it much closer to 2.5. Still, a lot of people seem to like it. So try it out for your self. I'd try it again myself for coffee only. read more

I stopped at Java's after I tried to find a table at Starbucks in Blakeney but discovered it was super tiny and full. It had been a while since I had been in Java's, but it was what I remembered: Quaint, lots of decor, and a large menu in general. I had an egg and cheese sandwich and a normal cup of coffee. Something I like better about this place versus Starbucks is that the coffee is actually good - Starbucks over-roasts their beans to get consistency across their stores, but it makes it bitter (bitter does not equal flavor people!). The coffee at Java's was plain, but smooth and well balanced like a cup of coffee should be. I have had a chai latte here as well and it was good, but those just aren't my cup of tea (get it!). There is a nice little play area if you have small kids and want to get a cup of coffee and have your kid leave you alone for a few minutes. The seating is OK, a nice couch area and a few round tables spread out, with a couple of square tables that are a decent size for setting up a laptop and some notes. I came to study, and the wifi was shoddy - I eventually just logged into the TimeWarner cable WiFi AP to keep a steady signal. It's still better than most Starbucks for working, and the food selection is actually very large - I mean for breakfast and lunch, I saw two ladies eating grilled chicken salads that looked pretty good. The breakfast sandwich was a typical Egg and cheese sandwich, and the pastries, cakes, cookies, etc. are decent - nothing to go out of your way for, but if you are close and want a cup of joe, a snack, and a quick break - it's a good place to setup. I enjoy studying or catching up on work here as it's not too loud, but I wish the WiFi was better to make it a better experience. read more

This is a fantastic place to stop for something sweet. You will not regret stopping by. The owner makes everything fresh. From the baked goods to the gelato. We ordered an egg salad sandwich, Eastern European sandwich, turtle brownie and cream horn. Everything was great! He offered to heat up my brownie and later offered to add vanilla gelato for free. The cream horn was the last one so without asking he made a fresh one while we ate our lunch. We will Definitely be supporting this small business again. read more

The BEST muffins anywhere in Charlotte. The coffee is great, as are the sandwiches and cookies, but my favorite thing about Java's is that I can always count on getting the most delicious and unique flavors of muffins. With all these positive reviews, I'm sorry to have to go against the grain. First, the positives - the coffee is on par with the big chains, and there are places to sit inside. On the flip side: - It feels bizarrely unfriendly (signs everywhere about what NOT to do inside the store, like not to put feet on furniture, restrooms for customers only, credit/debit card transactions have to be above $5, etc - one would think that in this type of establishment the signs are not needed, but even if they are, the capital letters and exclamation points all over them come off as especially unfriendly). If you like the opposite of a "warm, locally-owned small business" feeling, then this is your place. - Their wifi hasn't worked in months - if you bring it up, they'll tell you it is working and that something must be wrong with your computer, and that it works for other customers. Knowing my laptop wifi is fine, I also did a poll of other customers and it turns out they were all connecting from iPhone hotspots they created, and they agreed that the wifi doesn't work. When you're a coffee shop advertising free wifi and it doesn't work, it's a little annoying. Not to mention they're missing out on business from work-from-homers who like spending time and money at coffee shops (yours truly). So if you like wifi that doesn't work when they advertise that it's free, then this is your place. - Last time I was in there, I bought a coffee and sandwich. The total came to about 6 bucks. The previous time I paid with a debit card when the total was about that much, and received an eye roll in return, since I was barely above their "limit" for credit/debit cards. So this time, I paid with a twenty, and the lady proceeded to give me all ones in return, explaining that "my bill was a little large". What? I didn't have a ten, and twenties are much more common and what I happened to have. So if you like general unfriendliness while you are trying to pay a merchant, this is your place. - I ordered an iced coffee a month or so ago, and made the apparently terrible mistake of asking for it with splenda. The lady gruffly pointed to the counter where I could prepare it myself (hello, if you're trying to be the "friendly, locally owned" alternative to Starbucks, it's too bad that even Starbucks does this with iced coffee). So if you like being told to fix the @#$ coffee yourself, this is your place. I like supporting locally owned business, having owned some myself. I've given this place many chances and always end up disappointed. I'd rather spend my dough, and time with my laptop, at Starbucks. I feel dirty saying that, but as small businesses go, this one can't compete - simply because of service. read more

Tucked away in one of this city's myriad strip malls is this wonderful little cafe that serves up gorgeous and delectable macaroons, bottoms dipped in chocolate. One of the best I've had in a long time, the owners make them fresh daily. They have that toasted coconut crunch on the outside and sweet moistness on the inside. No dryness, no super syrupy sugary aftertaste, no need to gulp down coffee or water immediately after. And absolutely no desire to share because they are just too good. The owner Zev was very friendly and readily shared info about his pastries and how he tried to cater to the customer base. We also tried the lemon and lime tarts. I have to admit, I was turned off initially by the colors, I am just not into neon colored food, but apparently they are not the result of food coloring, simply the rind of the actual lemons and limes. Bottom line, these tarts were delicious. Flaky, perfect crust and the right tangy to sweet ratio on the filling. I was really pleasantly surprised. We are ordering a large number of the macaroons and tarts, which Zed graciously offered to make half-half (lemon-lime). He also gave us a great little discount and said it was no problem at all to make even a thousand of his fresh macaroons for us. I like him, I like his baked goods, I like this cafe. Go check this place out! Oh wait, caution on the cherry almond tarts, I wasn't a huge fan, too dense and I didn't like the flavor, but to each their own taste. read more

First off props for being one of the only coffee shops open till 9 pm! That alone makes this place good in my book. The place It is located in a little shopping center you can see it from the road. Inside they have a nice coffee shop feel. They have a TV and even toys for kids to play so if you decide to go for coffee and want to bring your kids. They have some really cool mugs for sale to check out while you are the there. The coffee I ordered the Iced Almond Roca latte which was very good. It had great flavor with a good balance of sweet yet able to taste the coffee. They also have a nice selection of desserts. I trusted the guy and went with a the Turtle brownie and my wife had the lemon butter tart. Both had great flavor were good choices. If you are looking for a great non Starbucks coffee shop that you can bring your kids and has great hours you need to check this place out! read more

We love their food and drinks. So many great options to choose from and we've never had something we didn't like. Customer service is another story. Very rude service here. I don't think asking one single question about a menu item deserves a huff and puff out of annoyance that someone wanted to know something about their menu. I didn't even receive a verbal answer. The woman pointed across the room to something to answer my question and seemed annoyed I even asked. I never understand service like this. I would give them a pass if it were the first time, but I have been in there 5 times now and received the same service each time. Absolutely love this place. The owner makes the desserts and bakery items himself. And boy are they good. Such a large selection, the only issue is what will you decide on. Premium coffee and specialty drinks are great - but those desserts are to die for. We had the key lime pie - very good. The zest of the lime and the crust make this awesome. But hands down, the winner of all winners is the cannoli. The best we ever had. My wife was speechless. We ended up getting a couple to go! If I had a complaint, it would be that I have to go home and hit the norditrack elliptical hard! Inside is very quaint - few spots to lounge - it could use some updating and lighter color scheme. Java's is simply amazing. My husband and I go there regularly, as we live nearby. Their coffee is outstanding, the pastries are outstanding (the red velvet cake is my favorite so far), the bagels are very good, and even their sandwiches are amazing (I tried the chicken sandwich with pesto-YUM)! The atmosphere is nice and cozy, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Service can be a tad slow during rushes, as they don't have tons of staff, but it's always well worth the wait! Love that it's not a chain establishment! I'll have to order a cake some time, as I heard they're amazing. :-) read more

Right off of Providence Rd. you will find this place nestled in the corner in Newtown Commons. Parking right outside is convenient. This place, however, is not a Starbucks but they seem to be doing great business. I spoke with the owner when I went in for a Chilly Turtle (a MUST-have) and a chocolate torte cake. The cake was just ok, lacking in the sweetness that I was expecting. It had a rich chocolate flavor but had no real pizzazz to the quality that I've experienced at other places. However, I could rave all day about the Chilly Turtle! Its a magical blend of ice, chocolate, caramel, and espresso. The flavors ignite something in your mouth almost impossible to describe. I know its just a drink but I find it to be GOLD! haha. Walking up to the building, I was sort of confused on which side I should enter, but take either door and it will open up into a homelike feeling that you come to expect from coffee shops. The family friendly radio (new life 91.9) playing in the background makes this a place that all are welcome. Very relaxed atmosphere. Take the time and talk with the staff, they will talk to you about anything and everything. Overall my experience was a good one.
