Last Thursday - Sunflour Baking Company I did avocado Panini, it was excellent just needed some sort of dipping sauce I think. To be honest, I didn't ask if they had anything so that's on me. But it was done on homemade sourdough. Tried a variety of sweet treats, one of which was gluten-free and vegan. The lemon donut! Not gonna lie my absolute favorite was a lemon poppyseed muffin. I could've eaten a whole loaf if they had one. Also tried the cheddar cheese biscuit and for me, it was great! I really really liked it. The pesto provolone roll was quite good. I was trying to figure out some of the flavors and I know it had to be herbs. The coconut macaroon was very good. It is sweet as was the lemon cupcake so be prepared! All in all, I will definitely be back and the young ladies working there were really hands-on and attentive. I did notice that there were people they are working on their computer or meeting - seemed like a pretty sweet deal. Yes, pun intended! Oh! My first time visiting this location was pleasant. My niece loves the place, so we ventured in to pick up lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was a tad busy, but the wait wasn't too long. The BLT was something special. I swapped out the standard bread for a croissant, which elevated it I'm sure. The Strawberry Lemon Fizz drink was amazing and refreshing, but it'll leave you wanting a bottle of water afterward. I don't think this place has enough exposure. i stumbled across it being new to the area and they are my new late Saturday "grabbing brunch" spot. the croissant was bacon egg and cheese but was huge. they also have other breakfast burritos, wrap, and other bread types. While waiting on the order I was able to watch other employees create, ice, and decorate cakes. they all looked like they were having so much fun. I was here kind of late in the morning, like right around noon, so they bakery options that I wanted were sold out. to me that just meant these baked goodie must be really good. While here I ordered coffee and that came out pretty quickly so i had to try not to sip on it too much before my sammie was done. Portions are great here and enough food for 2 to split. How do you not give this place five stars? The food and service are always great. The pasties are amazing! And don't sleep on their sandwiches. I highly recommend the sugar rolls. They are light and flaky with sugar that will make you want another one. Their muffins are some of the best in Charlotte. The blueberry is delicious, but I love the Snickerdoodle muffin! The hot sandwiches don't go light on ingredients, and the bread is toasted and crisp without being a hazard to the roof of your mouth. Their desserts are also wonderful. I knew I had to get a carrot cupcake, and it was worth the extra $4 - moist, plenty of icing without being overpowering, and the bottom of the cupcake was as good as the rest. That last one is especially hard to come by. The service isn't lightning fast, but it's no slower than most sit-down places. One negative (which I don't believe is viable to change) is while eating we saw the restaurant across the way pulling catering pans from a van and just hosing them down and leaving on the ground beside the restaurants trash cans. Noticed many high ratings at this multi-chain bakery, so had to check it out. Well, to start off, the place is cute, with a cheerful, sunny vibe. While this particular location wasn't really big, it used its space nicely...and I liked the outside patio area as well. As for the selection, not that big...and for me at least, not that great. Most of it seemed to be muffins or thick, bulky bread varieties, with very few light pastry options. Guess I'm more into French-style bakeries...this is definitely more of a Southern-American style bakery. I DID, however, manage to find something that was appealing...these mini cheesecakes (not so mini really...quite chunky, in fact!). There were 3 flavors (Pumpkin, Vanilla and Caramel) priced at over 5 bucks. I went with Caramel...which was really good. Still, I only ate half of it just because it tasted a bit too thick and fatty. To compensate for its fatty factor, I wished these were a tad smaller and cheaper. Still, I'm glad they carried these little treats. Overall, I liked but didn't love this bakery. They were out cinnamon rolls at 10:00 AM and they open up at 7 on Sunday. So why do you make more? It's not even fully though the day. Half the pastries were gone. No cupcakes, etc. They have a wide selection of various options of treats ranging from gluten free, vegan, etc. You can see the baker Making the treats in the back which is pretty cool. They have up to date technology for check out. No clear order to process. Person who checks you out makes the sandwiches coffee and gives you the treats. I was careful to watch them put on gloves but I can't say it's a typical for all persons who were working. Maybe one person makes the coffee, one person makes food, and one does cash. The persons working took order make items, etc for each order. The place appeared clean. They even have a bar seating area for your cafe. I had the blueberry muffin which was okay. I also had the Black Friday sandwich laster and it was okay as well. I had an opportunity to taste the chocolate chip coffee cake which was just okay too. I ordered on line today and it said "many flavors" so I ordered my usual plain cheescake (which has been MIA). On the way there they called and said they don't have plain cheesescake. Fine. When I got there I asked why they stopped making plain cheesecake. "People have been asking for flavors" "Okay, what flavors do you have?" "We have 2 flavors this morning. Oreo Cookie and Cookies and Cream." "That's really only 1 flavor since they both have the word COOKIE in them. Why don't you make 1 - Oreo Cookies and Cream and the other PLAIN CHEESECAKE?" " . . . and we can't give you a refund you have to go through your online choice for the money back." "I didn't make an online choice. Your system made it for me. Am I able to order on line through you directly?" "No." So every time you get something wrong I have to get my money back from someone else?" "Yes." The food and staff continue to be great. My only complaint is with ordering on line via Yelp. I stopped receiving email confirmations with my last to orders. As a result I reordered only to find out that both orders went thru so I was charged twice. When I contacted the bakery I was that they issued a credit thru Yelp. However 2 weeks later I still have seen the credit and the bakery told me that I would have contact Yelp to get refund. I am still awaiting on a response. I had been wanting to try this place, so when I saw a Groupon for it, I jumped on it. We went on a Saturday around 11 and it wasn't crowded at all. You order at the counter, find a table, and they bring your food out to you. We got the bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich on a cheddar biscuit, the frankly french toast (seasonal), and the black Friday panini. The french toast was my favorite. It had really good flavors. I also liked the bacon, egg, and cheddar sandwich. The cheddar biscuit was my favorite part. I thought the black Friday panini was just ok. I also got a chai tea latte which was really good. It was spicy and not too sweet. My husband got a dirty chai in a cone. He was not a fan. He thought the cone made the portions off. You also pay more for the cone but get less drink. Pinch me... If I haven't died and gone to heaven already, I'll probably be there by the end of the week, as a result of our favorite bakery, Sunflour Baking Company, moving into the Ballantyne area. My wife and I have frequented the location off of 7th Street for the past three years even though it's 25 minutes north of our Ballantyne home. This new location has the same wonderful pastries and sandwiches and coffee as the original location, but has a much more comfortable and sunny dining area. Quite frankly, it's fabulous. As the coffee bar to the left of checkout counter might suggest, the coffee here is not an afterthought like at some other places. The lattes are rich and creamy made with high quality beans. You can also find the some pastry samples here if you're lucky like we were. You can choose either breakfast or lunch sandwiches at any time of the day, both served on fresh bread. My wife and I typically split the Egg, Spinach and Warm Tomato on Toasted Fresh Rosemary bread as our meal, and for our "breakfast dessert" we split a Danish or two (or three.) I will probably have to quadruple my cholesterol and blood pressure meds as I will have a difficult time not stopping by everyday for the next couple of months. This past Thanksgiving I needed a pie for a Thanksgiving dinner and the only place that still had pies was Sunflour, weird but no pies were available anywhere else. I'm not sure what other bakeries were charging but a pumpkin pie at Sunflour was almost $35, that is insane! My sister who lives in NY paid $22 for a pie and she thought that was over priced. Keeping in mind that the cost of doing business in NY is way more than in Charlotte and all I can say is that Sunshine is over priced and bordering on pure greed! read more
