I have frequented this place over the years since its inception, in the beginning it was great , the food was good, the price was right and the service was respectable. Moving the time frame to the present and oh how things have changed over the years and unfortunately not for the better or even trying to retain the status quo. If you are going to trouble yourself in eating at this establishment,I recommend that you DO NOT under ANY circumstances order for pick up/take out. The order is ALWAYS WRONG. In the past,we thought it was just a fluke and that it was a one time occasion. SADLY, this now the norm for this place. Burgers prepared wrong all the time now. If you ask for medium rare, you get well done. It doesn't matter what type of cheese you ask for you're lucky if you get it at all and if you do it won't be the type you asked for. We literally have to open the bag and check the order every time before we walk out because we know it's going to be wrong is some way now EVERY SINGLE TIME. The cooking staff will give you hateful looks while you do this but I have gone through this too many times where I got home, opened the containers and found something not right and then have to call and complain. This really doesn't matter because it keeps on happening. Orders of fries left out, burgers cooked wrong, little to no condiments, no buns on the burgers and the list goes on and on. The fries here are simply inedible greasy and limp or crunchy and burnt. We don't order them any more and pick fries up from a different establishment. I'm not sure where the process goes wrong from the taking of the order to the making of it. Most of the cooking staff apparently speaks little to no English, which still is no excuse. We are talking about food here, not an act of engineering. If you can't follow simple orders and get said order prepared right for your customers and then look at your customers with disdain or talk to them condescendingly because YOUR fellow employees can't not follow directions, then maybe you shouldn't be in business. If you simply can't be bothered to get the order right and your more concerned with the money I'm handing you than the order I didn't receive, then from now on I won't be ordering or coming to your establishment ever again. Been here about three times and realized I've never written a review. This place is great for a group. The wait time isn't too long, the service is quick and the food is wonderful and at a decent price. I've only tried two things, a burger and their chicken fried steak and I definitely fell in love w/the steak. It's HUGE and omg sooooo delicious! Wow. I'm really sad to give a bad review, but this was pretty terrible. I ordered the West Texas burger (bacon cheeseburger) and didn't even eat half of it. One of my favorite spots to pick up lunch during the week. They have great lunch specials. I have enjoyed all of the entrees I've tried so far but, my favorite is the combo fajita salad with the jalapeno ranch and the fajita nachos with guacamole. Beware it's a pretty popular place for lunch so you might want to call ahead and place your order if you are in a bit of a time crunch. Really need to try and make it out for dinner. My son and I stopped in for dinner with his service dog. The people at the counter could not comprehend the service dog and asked us to leave. We did speak with the manager and had to produce the paperwork for the dog so we could stay. We sat outside on the patio. My son's fettuccini was ok but the sauce was reminiscent of a creamy ragu. The dinner roll was the highlight. My salad was tasty and fresh. I was suspicious of the dressing that came on the side but it was incredible! Wish I had that recipe! If you love fried, hearty foods, then you've found it! Came here for a quick business lunch and it was packed. The menu has something for everyone! I had the seafood platter ($20) and it was delicious but I couldn't finish it after awhile. The fried shrimp I definitely devoured but the fried catfish was a challenge. Imagine a more convenient, better tasting, less expensive version of your typical Chili's and you've got Jax Grill. However, recently I have noticed an increase in price across the board. I'd say there's been close to a 20% price increase, which is directly reflected in my rating. The menu can be a little overwhelming and they also have rotating specials that add even more to the already extensive menu. However, there are a few items that I would suggest, and I've been here way too many times to not give a few pointers. The have an amazing menu that includes delicious hamburgers, salads with meat choices that include homemade salad dressings to die for. Each day they have a special menu with 8-10 daily specials that are from soup of the day, care of the day grilled fish, and many other choices. Flavor is King at Jax Grill! Maybe it's because the menu is just so huge, but for the price you're paying it all is kind of meh in the end. 2. The parking lot is a hassle. I have been to the Heights location often but never to this one. It's just as good. I love the food here. Had lunch here on a recent trip to Houston. I had the fried chicken sandwich, onion rings and a piece of chocolate cake. The chicken sandwich was pretty good but the onion rings were not. The onion rings were homemade but not very good. They weren't crispy at all. They were kinda chewy. Very disappointing. My coworker had a piece of cheescake that he sid was good so I tried their chocolate cake. $10 for a piece of cake and pint of milk. So disappointing and over priced. I could have gotten that same piece of cake from a store bought cake at Walmart. Didn't even eat half of it. We sat near the section of the restaurant where the self serve drinks and utensils are. The entire time we were there one after another kitchen worker came out to get a drink. Some also hung out in that area talking on their cell phones and reading a newspaper. Love this place. My office regularly gets lunch here and it's been consistently good each time. It is a nice place to stop in if you're looking to have lunch in the Bellaire area. They have an outside patio with plenty of shade but inside dining area can get pretty cramped. Some of my favorite menu items are the mesquite fajita salad (the meat is always tender) the shrimp on a skewer with rice pilaf, the quesadillas with grilled chicken, buffalo burger and man, i can go on. lol The typical price per plate is pretty norm, around $8-$10 bucks but they do give you a good portion and the food is always fresh. If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend their turtle cheesecake or if you want, the plain cheesecake is DELISH too. Service is fast, if you place an order over the phone, they can have you taken care of in about 10 minutes but be aware that lunch gets ridiculously busy and the lines to order have been to the door sometimes, BUT they do have a separate line where you can go if you're just picking up an order. They have a private lot on the side but if it's full, you're pretty much stuck having to find a spot at the businesses next door or in the front (but it can get pretty nasty during peak hours). I would definitely pick this location over the S. Shepherd location ANY DAY, the service at this one is better and faster. read more

Burger this. Burger that. Thats what i kept hearing about Jax's. It seemed like the right place for an American hamburger. I joined a two friends for a "welcome back to the US" type of dinner to catch up him up to the latest words on the street while he was gone (about 2 years). My friends ordered the regular o' Jax burger since it's their specialty i suppose with a side of fries. They scarfed their meal down without any real comments of "wow!" or "this is amazing!" I would have expected at least some enthusiastic reaction, but no. I guess it was just ok. Since they got burgers, i got the catfish platter (plus i was in a fried fish kind of mood). Now that was some good fried fish. Before i ordered my meal, i asked the girl taking orders if she recommended it. She said yes. Then the other guy taking orders said..."Duh. Of course she's going to say yea it's good." Then i asked the other order taker, and he said "Yeah it's good." I got it. I vowed to myself that if it wasn't...i'd make some sarcastica and smart-alicky remark to them before i left. I didn't need to. The catfish was great. It might not have the street cred that the burgers do...but i think it should. I wish i brought my camera that night to photograph it. One mistake some fish fry places do is cooking fish too long. My filleted catfish was one huge piece shaped like a football, I expected the regular old long tubular sticks. Glad i was wrong. It was cooked perfectly. Soft, flaky, juicy, flavorful non-cornmeal breaded are some words to describe it. The tartar sauce and cocktail sauce helped to cool down the hot fish. The meal also included a ton of fries, two hushpuppies (good) and a serving spoon full of fried okra (okra is gross, but frying it up makes it edible). Maybe next time i'll get a burger to confirm what my friends ate, but for those who feel like fried fish...try it here. You wont be dissapointed. read more

The Bad Jax. I have attempted to eat at this location of Jax several times with a dismal set of concerns and issues. - They are so busy at Lunch that they treat you with an air of near contempt if you don't move at their speed. - The last time I met a client there they did not follow a simple request on a meal. Instead they served it with out concern for my request. When I brought it to the attention of the lady slapping the plates together..... !!! She had little to no concern with my request and took a significant amount of time to even recognize my presence and then even more time to ask someone to accommodate my original order. My group of five was almost completely finished with their meal by the time I had a fixed meal. Just to add to the absurdity of the situation, all I was asking for was a leaf of lettuce and a slice of tomato for my burger that had not been pre-made with onions! - We are setting up a new office literally within walking distance of this restaurant and I am sure I will not be making the walk any time soon. My recommendation is to avoid the disrespectful staff at this Jax and venture a short drive to the other Jax location for a warm friendly environment. I jus know i didn't want another breakout of the whole "winggate" incident that happened on one of our other nites out in DC where there was mystery involving suspicious charges and missing orders. I don't know why it was so packed, maybe everyone wanted to come to get outta the rain, but you can still find seat. you walk up place your order and pay, get a number, seat yourself and pick it up. casual dining supreme. The food was okay, not mind blowing (i had nachos) but everyone else seemed satisfied. The addition of a few brews and some march madness basketball made everything a lil better. Your local neighborhood burger joint with a huge menu of random items. They sell a lot more than burgers - salads, sandwiches, plates / platters, etc. They also have additional specials, as if the menu wasn't big enough. Great place for a quick bite (although there's a long line during busy hours on the weekends) or for large groups. For the burgers, patties are flame-broiled so has a crust on it, but still is pretty juicy. I wouldn't say they are gourmet burgers, more along the Fuddruckers style. Fries are delicious! read more

I have gotten the special 3 times and thought that each time it was good but forgettable. Positives: -Big selection. If I dont feel like a burger, or I want to be semi-healthy, Jax has a big selection of meals to choose from -Quick. 30 minutes for a lunch even with a line. -Prices. We will still go occasionally because we have small kids and it's a great place to bring them. The new ownership needs to step it up a bit. Also, not a fan of the people checking you out. Smile! Jax Grill is a case of "wrong place wrong time." Their main clientele is, to put it bluntly, seniors. The food here is fantastic, fast, and affordable - everything young people love! Unfortunately it's location limits advertisement to word-of-mouth as it is not easily visible nor accessible from the main streets. I always get the burgers here since they're so cheap and I constantly have cravings. They are freshly made, and never lack flavor. The in-house made ranches are AMAZING. I wish I could buy them in bulk. Jalapeno ranch, avocado ranch, etc etc etc mmmmm. The fries are great, too. Light and crispy, heavy in seasoning flavor, and in major abundance. Houston! This is your typical neighborhood restaurant that serves a large variety of things from American food (burgers, salads, sandwiches), to Cajun food, Italian food, Mexican food, etc. During the prime hours, this place can get very packed. But today I was slightly disappointed since my onion rings were a little heavily battered from the other times I've been here.. I do like that they had Jalapeño Ketchup and Katz brewed ice tea. I ordered the west Texas burger with jalapeños (they give it to you on the side and it's .25 extra btw). The burger I ordered was okay today.. LOTS of crumbly buttery graham crackery crust with the perfect, not too sweet, fluffy, dense, cream cheese filling. It was pricey at $6/slice but I would gladly reorder! So I went here with three older women... that alone made this an interesting experience. The only rings were quite good, but having to pay $1.50 up charge to get a whole six onion rings seemed kind of insulting. My mom had a friend oyster po-boy and seemed to like it. My grandmother had a burger and had no complaints. Thought it didn't look overly impressive to me. Our family friend had a salad, which did look quite nice and was size-able. It was nice that dinner for 4 ended up being only about $10 a person. So you get what you pay for, a decent meal for a decent price with no frills. I'd probably give this place another go in the future. The highlight of my meal was the one girl my age who walked in over the course of 2 hours to get take out wearing yoga pants and then had to come back to get her phone.
