Stopped at Lahaina's for lunch and had a nice experience. My hubby ordered the special--clam chowder in a bread bowl--and I went with the grilled chicken BBQ ranch wrap. The wrap was tasty and very saucy, which I enjoyed, though for the price I was a bit surprised it didn't come with a side. The clam chowder was served piping hot and was really flavorful. The cashier was friendly and happy to offer suggestions, which we appreciated. Since it was such a nice day, we ate at the outdoor tables, but there were plenty of tables inside too. To see the original owner back yesterday and we hope that the tradition continues. We have our favorite places in Morro Bay, but since we're in our mid 80s, we can't always get out there. I was very excited when the reviews said that this was the best place for fish and chips and that it's a must stop for SLO. It was my first time at Lahaina's, but it's always intrigued me as it's in the trader joes parking lot. Upon entering it was very warm in the store which i thought would be fine, but honestly it was slightly unbearable. Besides that, the customer service was nice and quick, no problems there. The positives: tartar sauce by itself was actually pretty good! It's on the higher end of other tartar sauces i've tried. Their fries were absolutely delicious, I love that their house fries are crinkle cut and they were nice and hot and crispy as soon as they came out. The fish however, although very nice and hot, just tasted rubbery. It had a frozen fish stick texture to it that i would simply not expect from a place where fish and chips are rated so highly. It was also sort of, bland? I felt as if the breading had no salt and was in desperate need of some seasoning. Sorry, but yesterday my family and I tried the four pieces of fish and fish combo. The fish is made in a flour only coating which did not give a lot of taste. The only taste on the fish was old oil on the French bread, fries, and fish. The clam chowder tasted like flour, it did not give you the taste of cream. Honestly don't recommend we spent over forty dollar it went into the trash at the restaurant. I want to complement this place after eating hereabout five times. I pop in after shopping at Trader Joes. The food is always excellent in terms of quality ingredients, freshness and preparation. I usually order fish and chips which is better than in any place in Morro Bay in my opinion. Yesterday I had a "cuban plate" --rice sauteed fish and cole slaw. Really, I like this place. I think the owner cares about his business and his customers. I had concerns in the change in the fish of the fish and chips platter. He explained they are now cutting the fish so the center line is gone. Right there, just cutting your fish tells you how fresh it is. My friend had the Hawaiian sandwich. It was very large and yummy. Grilled chicken breast with pineapple and teriyaki. Staff takes care to keep the place clean, wiping down the self serve soda machine. There is a good variety of bottled beers, including Big Wave. Awful. Top to bottom. Bad ingredients. The brand new cashier completely botched my order(I'm not lowering the score due to this). 30 minute wait when it wasn't busy at all. This is the 3rd time I've been. I keep trying different things and hoping but its just wishful thinking. Shame on me at this point. Also the prices are awful. I was not feeling well and ordered some food for the kiddos. I figured since it's close by it would at least be hot. I think tartar sauce is part of a fish and chip meal but apparently around here it gets forgotten...a lot. I had just been talking with my friend about how disappointed I've been with the fish and chips in the area, which I don't think should be the case since I live smack dab in the middle of a bunch of coastal towns. The breading is nice and light and the fish pieces nice and big! The staff was very friendly and I was lucky enough to overhear a conversation between the owner and another customer regarding his chili rellenos (not on the menu). So I ordered some of those for next day. Literally the best rellenos I've ever had. He uses two different kinds of chilis, one more a spicy than the other. Not a lot of breading in these bad boys. Well, the fish tacos are good, but not as good as The Custom House in Avila Beach. This is my and my wife's opinion. That being said, the fish is nicely flackey and not over cooked. The problem is that the taco is mainly slaw and not enough fish. The salsa tastes as though it came out of a jar and it is mild. read more

Been there three or four times now. Every time the owner was doing the cooking. Burgers have a generous size beef patty and were very good. The last time I went I ordered the fish and chips.
