We finally stopped by the bakery in Duarte to sample their signature beverage and pan dulce. Their…read morecafe de olla, was served hot, a nice blend of cinnamon and sweetness. We bought an elote, tortuga and can't recall the third piece of pan, and alfajores. The elote was delicious, I love that you can see little specs of cinnamon, soft and tender and vanilla scent. The tortuga was a bit more spongy, fragrant, and nice balanced of sweetness. The alfajores were buttery, crisp and smeared with dulce de leche. I needed a bday cake and decided to order the strawberry shortcake, because it looked so pretty. The cake was a hit with the family. The frosting was super light, the filling is one layer of custard and the other of light whipped cream and berries. The sponge is moist, the cake is not sweet, but decadent in its creamy texture. The inside of the store is aesthetically appealing, traditional glass cases showcase the pan. I'm so glad to have a nearby bakery and cake shop!

While I am very…read morehappy about this (I love Cafe de Olla in Monrovia), getting coffee and a pastry post-workout might very well become my routine if I don't exercise enough self-control! Like some of the reviews already mentioned, this location is more of a "grab and go" type of place. They have a solid selection of cakes, pastries, and drinks. If you are looking for their full breakfast menu, the Monrovia location down the street is where you would want to go! When I visited, they were celebrating their 1-year anniversary with an outside table of samplers. They had a balloon arch outside to signal to the community that they are celebrating something special as well. The lady out front shared with me what they had to offer, and she also mentioned that they do catering! I like my coffee strong but also on the sweet side. When I asked for the stronger option, I was recommended to get the cappucino rather than the latte and they can make the caffeine a little bit more concentrated without sacrificing the flavor. The cookies were a little dry for my taste but maybe it was because the samplers were sitting outside for a little too long. I would go back just to try the breakfast sandwich, but the experience of grabbing food was pretty fast and the food was flavorful enough! Excited to have a closer Cafe de Olla to me and wishing them so much success!

Their Dream Cloud is soft serve surrounded by a ring of cotton candy - this is such a fun treat for kids. I ordered the Dubai Chocolate Pistachio ice cream and my kids got ice cream cones with their choice of ice cream. The texture was creamy, and the pistachio flavor in mine was light without being overpowering. Overall, our family enjoyed our sweet treats and the playful atmosphere.

Ninja was more decadent than sweet, me and my partner both agreed that it could use more pop rocks--which gave a pretty pleasant and fun texture to work with alongside ice cream! As for the red bean and taro, both the red bean and taro components were less sweet than I preferred, but the plain milk ice cream was so rich and had a perfect texture. I do wish the corn flakes were also on the top of the ice cream as well. They added the sweetness I was looking for! We got soda too after, grapefruit and the rose lychee one I believe? Which we both agreed were better than the ice cream. The atmosphere is cute and trendy, although a little bit more barren the deeper you get into the store. Service was fine, quite fast even! I'd like to come back and try new things next time and hopefully find a favorite!

It was awesome that there were some samples to try and that definitely helped in my decision for my daughter's birthday cake in a couple months. For the 2 birthday cakes, we got the rainbow cake and Basque cheesecake. And for father's day we had the banana cream pie. From sampling the available cakes, my favorite is the Vietnamese Tres Leshes and Ube Hopia cake. Instead of the Basque Cheesecake, we should have grabbed the Sesame Basque Cheesecake. It tasted better, for our taste at least. For the most part everything we tried was delicious. Definitely coming back for some single serve desserts.

I've already been a fan of Wild Whisk, but they just became my very favorite bakery today…read morebecause... they now sell my favorite tamales from Tamale Alberto in Echo Park!! I used to live much closer to Echo Park and Alberto was my go-to tamale purveyor. I'd stack frozen tamales in my freezer because my kids love them and could heat them up for breakfast even when they were very young. I live in SGV now so going to Alberto's is a bit of a trek and we don't get to have their tamales often. Well, not anymore! Apparently the owner also loves Alberto's tamales and asked to co-sell them in her bakery. They've been selling these tamales since Christmas... and I just now discovered this! No more long treks to get these tasties! And of course all of Wild Whisk's fancy baked goods will make excellent desserts after your tamale meal! Spread the word! Best baked goods AND tamales in the 'hood!!
