I have been a customer at Jay Jewelers in excess of 16 years. It was always been very convenient to drop off jewelry for repair and to be able to purchase jewelry at reasonable prices - without leaving the building at which I worked. What began as a simple convenience has since resulted in my being a loyal customer to Jay and his staff - even after my job moved from L'Enfant Plaza. I have had no reason to purchase quality jewelry from any place else! I was surprised to read of the watch troubles in other reviews, as I have not only purchased watches, but have also had batteries replaced, links adjusted, and even brought friends' items in for repair. I have never experienced any of the problems described in these reviews. While writing this review, I can easily think of at least 6 friends who, upon my suggestion, have become as loyal customers as I. My engagement ring is vintage and irregularly shaped. I first had Jay resize it for me in May 2018. He did it in 30 minutes and gave me the extra piece of gold that he had removed in case I ever needed it to be sized up again. Then in June 2019 I asked him to make a custom band to match the engagement ring. We talked about what I wanted- tiny diamonds to resemble the diamonds already on the engagement ring. He did an incredible job! My engagement ring is not quite symmetric and he made it to match the side he felt looked best. It fits EXACTLY with no space between the two rings. It's just what I wanted. Now of course I had to let them have my engagement ring so they could make a wax mold from it but all this was documented and I have insurance on the ring just in case. If I didn't need such an exact match that would not have been necessary. To top it off, Jay and his wife couldn't be nicer people. What a pleasure to work with them. read more

I bought a souvenir piece from myrtle beach a few years back and the rope necklace broke :-( I went to Jay to see if he could help me out. His wife and Jay both consulted and suggested drilling a hole, adding a gold bail which I thought was an amazing idea! I left my piece and within 2 hours he had finished the project. This team was so nice, I asked them to take out links in my new watch and they did, but noticed it closed way to tightly. I walked away and said that it was fine and not to worry. I left and went to pay for a croissant, but couldn't turn my wrist to get into my wallet. I walked back and they not only smiled and fixed it with no issue, they didn't even say "told you so" which makes them all types of awesome in my book. I highly recommend them for repairs and restoration. When I took an art deco diamond ring there to be resized, the jeweler showed me how the white gold had worn off and suggested replating to restore its luster. I did not feel like I was being "upsold" but rather, given additional information to consider. I had the ring replated as well as resized, and the results were beautiful. The work was completed ahead of the time promised, within hours; and the cost was only a couple hundred dollars. I needed some jewelry cleaner, and the staff was very helpful explaining options and letting me know my polishing cloth did not need to be replaced yet based on its condition. I will trust Jay Jewelers with more family pieces for quality, price, and honest advice. read more

What ever you do, do not take your jewelry here to be serviced. I brought my less than 1 year old wedding rings into be rodium plated and specifically asked to have the stones checked. After I picked up the ring I noticed one of the prongs, which were fine when they were dropped off, had broken. I went back the next day and the jeweler denied having anything to do with it and would not offer to repair or provide any refund. I now have to pay another reputable jeweler to do his job and have it fixed. read more

Jay Jewelers is a small jewelry shop in the L'Enfant Plaza underground mall. In my 3-4 visits there, it is my experience that they have imperfect understanding of spoken English and can be quite belligerent in their treatment of customers. Last week, I dropped off a 15-year old watch that was showing signs of battery failure. When I picked it up the following day, I was told that the entire quartz mechanism has failed, could not be fixed, and must be replaced. The price they quoted was $89. I refused the offer, and took the watch to a neighborhood watch repair shop in DC the next day. The technician there replaced the battery, replaced the missing dust gasket, and returned the watch to me in perfect operating condition for $20.00. He explained that the battery in there was not thick enough, and the dust gasket was missing. When I confronted Jay Jewelers with the news that the problem was the battery and that the quartz mechanism was fine, they shouted at me and refused to admit that their diagnosis was wrong, predicting that the watch would soon stop working. That was a week ago. It is my opinion that they are not qualified to perform watch repair. read more

I had my watch's battery replaced there three months ago. Last week the battery died. I went to the store to complain and the owner took my watch to the back and when he returned he claimed that the battery was 4 years old and was marked with the date that the battery was replaced. I paid to get the battery replaced again but I feel like I am dealing with dishonest people so I will not be going back there. read more

I've been here 3 times- to get a bracelet cleaned, to fix earrings I stepped on, and to get my engagement ring resized. All experiences were great, and they usually have the item ready same day. The only issues I have: they are kind of pricey. The resizing of my ring was $100. I don't remember what I paid for the other stuff. However- they are super close to work and therefore very convenient. Other issue- when I got my ring resized, I felt that I didn't get any guidance for how tight it should be, things to consider, etc. The jeweler is supposed to be the expert but I didn't get any expert advise. So I encourage you to do research before you go. He sized my finger and had me choose the size, but didn't get much out of him other than that. Luckily the ring fits perfect and it looks exactly how it did when I dropped it off (besides being slightly smaller). I even took it to 2 other jewelers to make sure the size was best for my finger. read more

First time I experienced racial profiling was at this establishment. A Black man and his kids were in this store today and then I walked in while they were already in there and the 2 women behind the counter said "Oh there's your mommy!". Just assuming not only that I even knew this man but I was the mother of his children. I did not walk in with them, did not speak to them, that man did not speak to me, and unlike the man in the store I was NOT wearing a wedding (or any other kind of) ring. So these women had no good reason to just automatically assume that I knew them at all much less was his baby-mama. They both just jumped to that conclusion based on nothing more than me being a random Black lady that walked into a store that already had a Black guy in it. They're both ignorant. read more

I took two rings here to be resized and they did an excellent job. After looking around at prices and convenience this was one of the pricier places, but convenience won out. When I got back my first ring, it looked better than new and was sized perfectly. They did such a good job with my first ring that I brought in the more expensive one. They were able to resize the rings same day. I will be bringing in other jewelry for a cleaning. I've also had my watch batteries replaced here and again it's more expensive but so convenient. read more

I just went to this store, as it is close to my neighborhood, to get a watch fixed. It was a new watch I got over the holidays, but it had a few small scrapes on the screen, and I wanted to get some links taken off. When they attempted to buffer the screen out of my view, they put in a large dent, as the screen is apparently made out of plastic, which they didn't think to check. After that happened they said they could replace the screen, which I was going to pay for. I got phone calls to come pick up the watch and when I did to my surprise the same screen was still on the watch, dent and all. I paid for my links (which also did not fit right). They said they could not replace the screen, with that I left and emailed the watch manufacturing company cause now I have a new watch that looked like it was in a train crash. Not recommended for watch repair. Expected to pick up a fixed watch, which they made worse, and I still would have had to pay for. read more

You can get your jewerly repaired and back in a few days, sometime the same day depending what needs to be done. I love that they have layaway, so you can get whatever you want. I've had a few repairs done on jewelry here, but what I've been most impressed with is the work they did on a very old Rolex. It has sentimental value, so I was leery about letting go of it! The jeweler ended up having to manufacture a part for the watch because the old piece was broken and he couldn't get a replacement part. They did such great work that when the watch needed a tune-up again, I took it back to Jay's. This time, even though I was willing to pay for the work, he told me that because he'd worked on the watch in January (and still had records of the work) that it was under warranty and he wouldn't charge me. The issue wasn't even the fault of his previous work--it's such an old watch that the second hand has become very worn and fell off. He fixed it, AND noticed that the catch on the wristband was loose and fixed that, too. I hadn't even mentioned that to him, and he was just observant and saw the problem. Each time he's explained to me what the issue was, and what he did to fix it. He even showed me photos of the inside of my watch that he'd taken when he had it apart to fix it so that I could see for myself the work he'd done.
