Irene and Odaybea are great to work with. I first came in here last year when my then-boyfriend asked me what my ring size was. Irene was very patient in answering questions and sizing my finger even though it was clear I was no where near purchasing anything. Fast forward to this year - my fiancee originally wanted to purchase directly from Anna Sheffield, the company that designed my engagement ring. He had a lot of problems with timing, lack of communication, rudeness, etc. We found out that we could order the exact setting from Mia Gemma; the price was even slightly lower. Too bad for Anna Sheffield, that a third-party is better at selling their jewelry than going to the company directly. Odaybea was really accommodating and even tried to rush production of the ring as it was already a 3 month process with Anna Sheffield. We didn't end up buying the diamond from Mia Gemma, but no one at Mia Gemma batted an eye about that. They still treated us like we were spending a lot more money than we did. For the record, Anna Sheffield did apologize and made it up to us. Their jewelry is stunning, so I would still recommend you check it out - but you might as well do it at Mia Gemma with great customer service (and also lots of beautiful jewelry from other designers including Odaybea herself!) read more

Mia Gemma means " My Gem" in Italian. This store, and its owner Irene Barbieri are true gems! I give it five stars made of 24 karet gold and diamonds! I had a sentimental antique ring given to me on my 18th birthday, by my mother, which I cherished, and wore all my life. I'm now retirement age. . . One day I noticed that the beautiful blue sapphire central stone , which was surrounded by small diamonds fell out and was lost. I felt terrible, I brought it to a highly recommended jeweler, who botched the whole repair. It came back with an ugly black looking smaller stone and the mounting had been changed and flattened. On a business trip to Washington, I called Mia Jemma, not only because it had excellent reviews online --- but it sounded like a small, intimate store that emphasized customer service and personal design. Irene , the owner immediately answered the phone with her kind, gentle voice, listened to my story, and told me to come in.When I arrived, she understood exactly my feelings and special the attachment to this ring . She treated me with utmost patience, sensitivity and care. I could tell she loves her work and is passionate about it. I immediately felt I could trust her with my ring, and leave it with her in Washington to be fixed. I was right. She immediately set about working hard to find the right stone and color, and have it remounted correctly. She sent me photos throughout the process for my consideration and approval. I felt that that she was as dedicated to getting it repaired correctly as if it had been her own precious possession. I just received the ring back today. I am thrilled with its restored beauty, the way it glistens and shines, and the feeling of reconnection with the love that went into it when it was given to me by my mother so many years ago... Especially since my mother is no longer alive. I have Irene to thank for all of this. I can't imagine anyone, anywhere, doing it any better, or doing it with such love and care. This place is amazing! I have been a customer since 2010 and continue to go back. I remember walking by the window and being drawn in to look at all of the beautiful one of a kind pieces. The personal attention I receive here can't be matched. There is no pressure to buy. Feel free to just walk in, browse, and try a few things on. I can attest to stopping by after a long work week, trying on a beautiful unique piece of jewelry, and wearing it for a bit. It is definitely a pick me up. In addition to my frequent 'window' shopping, Irene and more recently Odaybea have taken time to find just the right artist to design or even redesign some of my jewelry. As I happen to have a fairly small wrist I do have problems finding a bracelet that fits. Luckily Odaybea can resize a piece by just taking off a few links or adding a different clasp. If I see a bracelet, necklace or ring I sort of like, I can and have worked with an artist to create a one of kind piece of art - selecting the color of gemstone, the type of metal, the shape, and the style. Most jewelry store offerings can be overwhelming, mass marketing, items are unoriginal and can be over-priced. The pieces at Mia Gemma are unique and elegant. The creations start from reasonably priced to name your price. If you have an idea just ask. the jewelry was heart-stopping. the customer service? i walked into this tiny little place full of anticipation. there were some lovely necklaces on the counter, and i reached out to touch them. wow, wish i hadn't, because the woman behind the counter literally snatched them from under me. i can only think she thought i meant to steal them. yow-sah. after that, i only stayed in the store because my sister and my 6 yr old daughter were so agog with the merchandise. i was so put off by the aformentioned incident that i couldn't really see anything else. i can't imagine what that woman was thinking, but this store's claim of "premier customer service" is waaaay off. read more

Their jewelry is not run of the mill items. They have some unique pieces and while some items are pretty pricey, not everything is. I purchased a few items for special occasions. A couple years ago I purchased a silver and pearl necklace and matching earrings for my 25th anniversary. This year, I purchased another set of earrings that also match the necklace. for my anniversary I get so many compliments on that necklace. I lost the diamond from my engagement ring and purchased a unique ring with four small diamonds from Mia Gemma as a replacement. I wear it every day and I love it. When my girlfriend and I went engagement-ring shopping, Mia Gemma was the first place we went and -- after a couple stops elsewhere for comparison -- the last. Irene had a terrific, beautiful selection and couldn't have been more welcoming. No pressure at all, and she asked questions that drew out possibilities, likes and dislikes. We knew nothing walking in and felt far more comfortable with the process and the range of options by the time we left. Her focus on working with artists also was important. The selection felt more unique and creative (but not wild looking!) than what we'd seen elsewhere, yet still there was a substantial (and helpful) array of prices and options. When it was time to buy, Irene was very helpful in corralling all the details and making the work easy and relaxed. I bought a pair of earrings and wanted a bracelet to match it, and one of the ladies who works there was incredibly helpful in helping me select the right piece from the designer, taking my wrist measurement, and contacting the designer to get a price quote within days. She was in touch with me promptly by e-mail and by phone. The piece arrived within 3 weeks. It's a bit of a pricey shop, but they carry designers who you can't find elsewhere in DC. I bought my wedding band here. A Sarah Richardson band, and I absolutely love it. I'm not your typical woman who knows exactly what they want to wear on their finger for the rest of their lives, so I was a little overwhelmed by finding something that made me think, that's exactly what I want. I admittedly didn't make but one or two stops to other jewelry stores before Mia Gemma, but I instantly felt more comfortable there and was much more interested in their selection; they have a wide variety of American made artisanal jewelry that you won't find many places. I didn't feel rushed or pressured and the service was really good; they measured my finger more than once, and measured my fiancé's finger, too, even though he wasn't planning on buying anything there. They also cleaned my antique engagement ring and told me to come back as often as I'd like to have it cleaned in the future. Overall I'm incredibly happy with my Sarah Richardson ring, and Mia Gemma's service. The only thing I would wish for is that they carried more of her jewelry in the store to try on, pictures just aren't the same! Also, you should note that unlike most jewelry stores, this is a place where you find something based on it's unique craftsmanship, rather than wanting to seek out the finest diamond. Of course, many of their rings can be set post-purchase, so you can get the best of both world's if that's your thing! I'm so glad that I found this place. read more

Designing and purchasing a custom engagement ring through Mia Gemma was an absolute wonderful experience! I had a family ring with a beautiful center diamond but a bit old/dated setting that I was not sure what to do with. Irene was friendly and incredibly helpful, especially in the early stages of the ring planning. It was such a relief to have someone who could help navigate me through the many options, with the perfect balance of letting it be my decisions while also providing helpful suggestions that eventually zeroed in on the perfect ring. Irene's designer was fantastic, taking the many (sometimes conflicting) design tastes of my fiancé and distilling it down to a single design. I was very touched that they were willing to recast the family wedding ban/engagement ring into a new setting rather than scrap the gold. Mia Gemma is very sensitive to design preferences that work with your budget, and found a way to successfully accomplish both goals. They stayed true to the timeline (actually finishing the ring several weeks early), and were always professional and timely in their communication. If you have a family heirloom or custom ring idea, I can't think of a better place to work with than Mia Gemma. They have my highest recommendation! read more

I almost never write on-line reviews but felt compelled to this time because our experience with Mia Gemma was so wonderful that it had to be shared. Seven years ago my wife and I moved to DC from NYC, where we could go to 47th Street for our jewelry. A few months ago we heard about the resetting workshop being offered by Mia Gemma and took a chance at seeing if they had any ideas regarding a diamond necklace that my wife had in yellow gold and wanted reset into a silvery setting. Mia Gemma had some terrific ideas and transformed that very formal (i.e weddings and black tie events only) necklace into four magnificent pieces. A dressy but modern necklace that has three delicate strands with each of the diamonds mounted in a doubled sided setting so that the jewels always face out. A bracelet, where all of the tiny diamonds that didn't seem even usable to me, are cozied up against each other into a solid, Swarovski type piece, except that the diamonds are much more sparkly and the piece beautifully delicate. Stud type earring that are works of art that can be worn to a wedding or to Barracks Row. And finally, a double sided mounted solitaire (that always faces out) that I don't think my wife has taken off since we got it. Everything is beautiful, each of the pieces will be worn frequently, and the Mia Gemma folks were a pleasure to deal with. Five diamonds for this establishment. read more

My fiancé and I were looking for a very specific type of engagement ring that we could not find in any run of the mill jewelry store. We are from Philly and I was in DC for work and we happened to stop in- I loved Mia Gemma's style of jewelry so we decided to have our ring custom made there. My ring was very specific so it was quit the process. Irene and Odaybea were so helpful and their designer Brian did an excellent job! It was exactly what I wanted and BEAUTIFUL! I was intent about having a "dainty" ring with a pave halo and words can't describe how beautifully it was set- I still can't believe how perfect Brian made the halo. In addition, after we picked up my ring my fiancé decided to get one of their custom rings for his band. I would definitely recommend them if you are looking for an engagement ring- they have beautiful and unique jewelry to choose from.
