If you live in The Region, this is the place to get your hair done. I knew from the second I walked in that it'd be a great experience. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. It has a modern country chic decor. Many of the stylists are young and fun and have great personalities. They also have a very collaborative environment, helping each other out with different tasks and making the cuts and colors go by quicker. Now, I've gone to see Danielle for almost 2 years now. She has both cut and colored my hair. I am so impressed by her coloring, which looks incredible. She's seriously given new life to my hair, which often looks dead by the time I come to see her. She never cuts it too short or forces me to do something I don't want. She knows my face shape though and skin tone to make whatever she's doing look best. On top of everything, I found this place to be quite reasonable. I have a TON of hair and most places around here would likely charge me over $200 to get a balayage, toner, and style. I've never written a review before but Jay Marie is an exception. Yes, clearly, it's overpriced but you would think their quality would match. I bought a blow-dry style ($30) for prom and was charged an updo ($60). I asked about it and was told that since its for a special they consider it an updo. The hairstyle was my bangs pinned back and then the rest curled. No updo whatsoever. The first two times I've been there, I wanted a balayage and received a completely different color from the photo both times That may be on my behalf, because you know how salons are if you are not specifying to the bone. Will not return to this salon. The service is no longer worth the multiple apps you need to download in order to tip each stylist individually. Bring cash, or you will need Zelle, Venmo, AND PayPal on your phone for gratuities. You cannot tip on a credit card. I spoke with both the Manager and the Owner about this inconvenience for customers. The Owner was dismissive, even after I had paid for the services, left the salon, went to my own bank, and returned to make sure the stylists received gratuities. The salon claims they notified customers about their "changes in policy", but I had been there several times and never received any notifications. I had, though, received texts from the salon on other occasions. Since there was no acknowledgment for their customer's inconvenience, it would seem that Jay Marie isn't too interested in customer satisfaction or retention. read more

I was visiting from out-of-town and before stopping into the salon, I messaged the owner on Yelp inquiring about a blowout, manicure and pedicure. The owner quickly responded saying they could get me in the following day, but never referenced or made mention of any pricing. I have these services a lot in California so I went in with certain expectations on price. First off, it took 2.5 hours to complete both a manicure and pedicure because they only had one person assigned to me. Literally, never in my life has it taken more than an hour for this type of service. This was frustrating, but nothing could prepare me for what happened while checking out... At the register, after my (regular no gel) manicure and pedicure was already complete I was told I'd be charged an additional $35 fee because I already had gel on my nails. Look, I've been getting my nails done since I was a teenager and living in Newport Beach I'm used to high prices and additional fees, but this was another level. To be honest, this felt a lot like taking advantage of an out-of-town customer that they assumed would never come back. Where was the communication from the owner on this? There was none. Where was the warning BEFORE they started my manicure and pedicure that I'd be charged a VERY large fee because I already had gel? There was none. Where was it listed on their menu or on their website? It wasn't. I politely spoke to the gentleman at the register about the fee, but he didn't care. In Newport Beach (one of the most expensive places in the country) they at most charge a $5 fee for gel removal per area i.e $5 for gel hands and $5 for gel toes). I was absolutely livid walking out of the salon. And I can't help but feel like I was deliberately taken advantage of for being an out-of-town drop in customer. From New York to Newport Beach, San Francisco and even London -- this is the MOST expensive nail salon I've ever visited in my life. I couldn't recommend this place less. It was a terrible experience and I hope it serves as a warning to any new (especially out-of-town) customers. Beware. read more

I love going to this salon. Everyone is friendly and the women are always wearing cute outfits reflective of their own individual personalities. The most warm atmosphere is also reflective of the owner who is always on the floor working. I've been to other salons in the area where I felt the atmosphere was too snobby so this is a perfect establishment. I always get my hair done here (color and cuts), and I've also had my makeup and nails done as well as some spa services. I have been looking for a great quality salon that's closer to home. Before, I was going all the way to Michigan to get a more reasonably priced color/cut at an Aveda salon. Realizing this was becoming too far of a drive, I explored options downtown Chicago which ended up costing me triple the price for the same color/cut. I tried looking for a salon closer to home that could give me the same quality as downtown Chicago but at a more reasonable price --- similar to the Aveda salon I was going to in Michigan. After trying out Jay Marie, I loved it! Anina gave me a great haircut and balayage color that was better than any salon I've tried before-- definitely recommend her!! Now I wasn't going to leave a yelp review but I need to since this salon is not as great as it could be. I have been doing hair for quite some time and normally you wouldn't have someone fresh out of beauty school on the floor doing hair but if you are the owners son why not? I get it, that's your mother and she is "well known" because she has done runway work etc... that means nothing to me. There were not enough stylists where he has his station and let me be clear it wasn't a very large spot for how big he is. There were multiple stations in the room with 2 stylists and she was right next to him and I could hear her entire conversation. Thank you, next. He was very nice and before I came in he knew I am a seasoned hair dresser and I will most likely judge and direct him on my hair cut. So when we started he asked what I wanted. I explained one time and that should be enough right? No, I had to remind him three to four times what to do. So that's when I decided to leave this. He isn't ready to be on the floor "mom". He needs to be assisting and learning more. However he did a very good job but I could have done this myself with a couple mirrors placed.. I wasn't offered a shampoo . So I left with hairs throughout my head for the day. About the salon, it's in a horrible location, not appealing to the eye outside and way to many people at the front desk makes it loud and caddy. I am just visiting but I am from the area and most likely will never go back to that salon. The problem with salons in the region, there are just too many in such a small area. Most stylists don't know what they are doing and just jump the gun and think they are the best. I am not the best but I sure as hell know what I am doing. I have worked at top salons in Chicago and do hair privately and have done it for bigger named people like this owner. I give the salon a negative 2 and Kyle a 3 for dealing with me . I got a very good haircut and balayage highlights at an affordable price, way lower than I was expecting considering the nice atmosphere and quality of the work. Jessica was efficient, informed, and a very talented stylist. The haircut was probably the best I've ever gotten, and the highlights weren't streaky at all and looked perfect--natural yet bright. I would first like to say before I get started that I am a easy going down-to-earth middle aged women. I am a quite person that keeps to myself. Never complain about a place or person in particular. Everyone has bad days. It all started with the timing of my appointment. From what I gathered they somehow transposed the numbers wrong. So basically I had to wait. Mind you I had a business meeting later in the day. So I always give myself some wiggle room in the event something happens. Thank God I Did! My review is the reflection on the poor customer service given by the front desk associate and especially the stylist Adeline. I feel she needs to find a new occupation for how she belittled me on my hair!!! So basically the receptionist made me feel like it was my fault and tried to shift the blame on someone else that may have booked the appointment. It was totally her! Whatever happens to: "I'm so sorry, let me speak to the manager to see what we can do." I wanted to throw the book "Customer Service for Dummies" at Adeline and the Front Desk Associate! I was a first time client at Jay Marie a few weeks ago. I wanted to pamper myself for my birthday, so I scheduled an entire day of spa services. I had a massage that was nice. Next was a facial, I didn't totally enjoy. Lastly, a spa mani/pedi which was fine. I was there for nearly 5 hours and was offered a cup of water after about 4.5 hours. I get that we are in NW Indiana but if you charge spa prices, you should receive spa treatment. The front desk staff was very pleasant but I can't say the same for the rest. I work in the service industry and we are all hurting in these unprecedented times, trying to please and retain clients should be a priority. I had a massage and no chip mani/pedi from Kristy yesterday. The massage was very nice and relaxing. The pedicure was good. The no chip, however, had a ton of bumps because she didn't buff my nails properly and kept saying with more coats it would look better. It did not. I should have had her fix the entire mani right then but had prior work/family commitments and couldn't stay another 45 minutes. When I called today to see if I could have a new manicure booked for free considering the initial one was crap-I was kept on hold and then told no. Joke is on Jay Marie because I would have been a high spend customer. Really what got me was the rude male receptionist. Never again. Customer service = everything. Let me start by saying that I am pretty particular about my cut and color. I always bring in photos of the cuts and colors that I like. Caitlyn totally exceeded my expectations. Although I loved this particular cut, I didn't think my fine hair would be able to mimic that particular style. I'm very happy to finally have the beachy waves that I've been wanting. She even managed to make my way-too-short top layer look cute. I'm growing it out from a botched cut from a different salon last year and have been frustrated with the short layers. My hair was so brassy and drab, but she managed to bring my hair to a beautiful cool brown with the perfect amount of highlights. It was exactly what I wanted. She also cuts my blunt bangs perfectly every time too. The most important thing is that she listens to me, and has a really good vision of what I want. I learned about Jay Marie at a bridal expo. Tristan did my bridal updo a few weeks ago. He was very nice and personable. The finished style was beautiful, unfortunately it didn't last. I don't feel like he listened to my concerns. I asked him to pin in my veil. He said he didn't need to. It fell out about an hour after he finished my hair, pulling the area of styled hair along with it. He made large curls in the back. I asked him to make sure he used enough spray to hold them in place. He assured me he did. Within 3 hours all the curls and pulled up sides fell out. I have naturally curly hair that usually stays curly without issue. 15 min before I walked down the isle I was basically re doing the entire style. I've had my hair professionally styled for other events multiple times. This was the first time I've ever experienced my updo falling out. Sadly it was one of the biggest days of my life. read more
