One of the landmark stores in Westfield, Jay's is one of the longest standing mom & pop-owned family businesses in town. I bought my first ten-speed, a Schwinn Varsity, from Jay's dad 50 years ago. I haven't bought a new bike in awhile, but if I go into Jay's just to buy a $7 water bottle, I get the same respect and courtesy from Jay's employees as another customer who's just forked over $10K for a top-of-the-line Trek or Specialized racing bike. You won't get a condescending attitude here that you might at some of the other nearby shops. Jay's prices are competitive, and in many cases, lower than the local competition, on items that everyone needs, like tires. Many people don't like cycling because their bicycle is not set up correctly for their body. A fraction of an inch of saddle or handlebar adjustment can make the difference between a comfortable ride and a miserable, painful experience. It's like wearing the wrong size pair of shoes. This is where a good bike shop like Jay's comes in. The staff here is skilled at properly fitting customers, which is crucial when setting up a new bike. Jay's does a lot of philanthropic work for the community, including sponsoring an annual century ride to the Jersey Shore to raise money for charities like The Jimmy Fund and local food banks. I'm suspicious of the sudden influx of bad reviews; I'm a longtime customer of Jay's, so I'm a bit suspicious that someone had a bad experience. I grew up in Westfield, so my dad, an avid cycler, got his bike at Jay's. My sister and I learned how to ride bikes bought at Jay's. When I graduated from college and wanted a fitness/fun bike, I went to Jay's. I didn't realize it until months after purchase, but I actually beat out the MSRP by a significant margin! I bought a crosstrail which I ride to work almost daily, half an hour each way, and as to be expected from a high end bike, I love it. What I didn't expect was the quality of service, both in terms of repairs and assistance, when I was getting tune ups, and buying accessories. One thing I particularly like is that Jay's doesn't pay their employees on commission so I never feel pressured to upgrade or buy higher. They also have good repair deals in the winter. Stopped in this week while I was peddling through Westfield and saw that the light mounted on the fender of my newly acquired Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 was a little loose and floppy. The screw was under the front fender and the small "L" of an Allen wrench would not fit. So rather than risk the loss of a loose screw and potential inconvenience, I stopped in at Jay's being they were an 'Authorized' Specialized dealer to see if it might be a quick fix. I had one person ahead of me properly social distancing and nobody behind me at that time. In about 3-4 minutes I was asked what I needed and I explained and showed it to the mechanic. He verified it would not be a quick in & out and I said, "It's a new bike I just got a few days ago form another dealer and I just thought that maybe you could take care of it under the manufacturers 2 year warranty as I'm about 11 miles away from my home." I got a look, then there were 2 more people that came in behind me for service and I was told, "You'll have to wait until we take care of OUR customers first." WOW, I left. AND, I should go back there ever agin because?? On a second note, being a member of the CJBC (Central Jersey Bike Club), another fellow member informed me that this business refused to honor the 10% discount card a few weeks ago. Nice. I recently purchased a three-wheel bicycle for my daughter who has Down Syndrome. Even though I didn't buy the bicycle form Jay's (they don't sell these types of bikes) they were willing to professionally assemble it for me. This would have been enough to warrant a 5 star review in and of itself, but Jay went above and beyond. When I went to pick up the bicycle it didn't fit in my small SUV. I just recently purchased a new Specialized Tarmac in an awesome yellow/black paint job from Jay's on the recommendation of the staff there, particularly Leo, and I couldn't be happier with it! It's a phenomenal bike that can keep up with me (a huge upgrade from my previous bike) and all the help and info I've gotten from everyone at the shop has been great! Julie helped fit the bike to me, John transferred my pedals and bottle cages, etc to the new bike, Chris made some adjustments after about 150 miles of riding once things started to break-in, and Jay imparts his wisdom and tips and quirks about the bike since he owns one himself. The staff is always pleasant, helpful, and friendly and they've even adopted the name I gave my bike, Bumblebee(TM) ;p as the unofficial name for the rest of them that they have in the shop. I just bought a new road bike there and had a fantastic experience. I worked closely closely with Julie, and was extremely impressed by her knowledge, customer service and patience. She never pushed me at all and really listened to my needs before making a suggestion. I found the perfect bike for me, as well as new pedals and shoes. They had a good selection with very competitive pricing. Leo was also a big help, and I even got some motivation from Chris, Jay and the team! As with any new bike, I brought it back a few days after my first two rides to make minor adjustments, and they were happy to accommodate. I went in and met Burt and he was fantastic from the beginning to the end of my purchase. Due to damage on my old bike from a crash, he was able to offer me a redicliously good deal on a new bike. He spoke with Specialized on my behalf and did everything absolutely possible to help and ensure I was happy, satisfied and things worked out. Bert also did a top notch professional sizing and fit of the bike when it came in and was able to again help so much with purchase of pedals and other accessories. He is a wealth of cycling knowledge. Everyone else in the shop was kind and helpful ( and Julie is easy on the eyes too ) but Burt is a true asset. Jays is a little bit of a car ride from my house and there are a few closer bike shops but I will without a doubt take all of my future business to them. They have the worst service I would go every couple weeks to get my bike fixed because a problem would always occur it' was just constantly having problems and when we went to buy it was the newest version before the Kink launch 2019 and the frame had broken and they told me it was my fault and it wasn't they said I was riding with something broken for months and that cause the frame to break. This makes no sense since I told them the was constant squeaking and it felt harder to ride almost every time I brought it back. They should have soon the problem if it has "been broken for months" as one of the worst workers Chris he does no good work even my friends hate him he never does your bike right and when u need anything done with your bars or brakes he pulls your bars back and if you ask for them to be pulled back up he says what the hell do u need to pull your bars up for and we keep asking but he would never do it. Whenever he says there is something wrong he's wrong and it would end up not even being that so it was his fault the bike broke and he said I was ruff with it, i was never ruff with it he lied everyone that knows me knows I take care of my bike, if there is something broke I'd bring it to Jays but like every time a new problem occurred. All my friends know how bad the service is once when I had my pegs done it Would take the guy "Chris" 30 minutes and that seemed unusual so I came back after 25 minutes and he's halfway across the store looking around and he sees me and he slowly runs to the bike when he sees me and one was barely put on and it took so long for him to do it. I would have no problems with any other bike from other stores and my friend recommended this place and his bike keeps breaking too. I had the bike for almost a year and the Frame was broken because of the shit service offered at this place. It's not like I was even doing pro tricks I would ride around town and do simple tricks like wheelies and fakies and stuff like that not hard or pro tricks so this is how bad the service is. Also all my friends agree with how bad the service is. And also the employee Chris bullied my and my friends of how we looked and dressed and should of looked at himself because I bet he can't even get on a bike. read more

Had a customer service delight today and wanted to share my appreciation. As many, I have been riding my bike more often. I noticed recently in certain situations my chain was falling off. I fully expected I'd have to leave the bike with Jay's to be repaired. I wheeled it back to the tech area and they asked me a few simple questions. The tech thought the bike fix would be relatively simple so he put it up on the stand made some adjustments and sent me and my bike on our way. Recently bought a Trek bike from here. The bike is great, and they thankfully held it for me for a couple weeks. I didn't buy a bike in over 20 years, so I knew I was going to have some questions. However, when I got to the store, the 20-something year old in the Trek booth rushed me from the start. As soon as he put the bike in my hands, he kept rushing me to pay. And even when I asked one question, his answer was rushed and I didn't feel comfortable to ask any other questions. I just paid and left. Didn't really care for my experience here solely because of their customer service, especially the guy manning the Trek booth. However, the bike was great! read more

I spoke to the Rep at the shop over phone and he said $15 for repairing the rear brake on a 20 inch kids bike. When I reached the shop, he asked for $25. An effective business practice of shody businesses, make the customer go through the effort of driving to the shop and then raise the price, poor customer having spent all this time is forced to shell out extra money. read more

Brought in my folding bike for a new chain and for tightening the folding mechanism. Big guy in the back told me it would cost $30 for the parts (chain is $16), labor, and tax. Okay cool, sounds good. Come back in an hour. We come back and the big guy gives the girl at the register the receipt and returns to the back. She tells me it's going to cost $50+. I ask her why and she reads the list of the receipt: Chain, tightening the mechanism, and 'other things'. I sigh, pay it anyway and leave because I'm in a rush. Not happy about it at all, but then again an extra $20 is not enough for me to cause a scene. Just not coming back. If you say something is going to cost a certain amount, then please do not proceed to lie or do extra labor that wasn't agreed upon to get an extra 20 bucks. This is why small business is dying. This is why it makes more sense to get a $10 chain on Amazon and look up how to do it online. Crap business. Crappier people. read more

Way too busy for a bike shop (during late spring through summer). The staff are nice but they are so busy that you have to make your presence known or they'd have nothing to do with you. They kinda need to expand their operations if this demand is consistently high. Good for them, though. I would have given it 5 stars but c'mon... 1 week for a safety tune up and chain replacement? That's a 20 minute job at the most. Every time I go there, it takes 1 week. As an avid cyclist, 1 week without my precious bike is terrible! Need to improve efficiency. read more

I recently have been enjoying indoor spin class for the first time and was not knowledgeable in what I needed in spin shoes. I came to Jay's to purchase a pair of shoes and get more information. Before coming to Jay's, I had wasted my time trying to order pairs online that didn't fit or the clips were not in the right place giving me blisters. The staff at Jay's are so knowledgeable and made the process so easy. In one shot, they found me the perfect shoes and had the clips put on the shoes exactly where I needed. I am enjoying spin class so much more because of their knowledge and customer service. When there are still stores like this, you can really explore new hobbies. We have never been thrilled with the service at Jay's but we love to support local businesses so when my four year old needed a new bike and I needed new cycle shoes I decided to go to Jay's. I walked in a saw four men talking and I assumed they were sales people and customers so I started looking at the kid bikes and waited for someone to help me. When I didn't get help I walked to the shoe section to see if I could get help with shoes first. This went on for about 10 minutes, all four watched me go back and forth and I'm sure they were able to hear me ask my son what bike he would want. Finally a male customer walked in and he was immediately greeted and asked if he needed help. It turns out the four men talking were actually Jay's Cycle employees. At that point I lost patience and decided to take my business elsewhere. I drove to High Gear Cyclery in Millburn and was thrilled with the service. When I got there the shop was full, but I was greeted and told I would be helped shortly, within minutes a sales person helped me find my son a great bike and helped me find new cycle shoes. Total price for both items was $370. I will continue to support local businesses in our area, but not Jay's Cycle, if we need cycle items we will drive to Millburn and support High Gear Cyclery. read more

I recently brought in an old bike purchased from Goodwill. I had what I thought was a pretty simple request for a seat post. Little did I know the size seat post needed for this bike was not standard and is incredibly hard to find. The mechanics at Jay's really went out of their way to find a solution for me, and did so knowing this wouldn't be a huge sale in the end. That is top notch customer service to me. I have been buying bike's from Jays' for 20 years. There are definitely a number of great staff here, but there are also always a large handful of rude employees as well. They are unhelpful, even to return customers, and usually prices are not great (being ripped off and giving terrible service is unacceptable). I have recently decided to not return back here for any additional services or purchases because of the handful of employees that are rude and unhelpful. Many people in the neighborhood have had problems with their bad manners and being treated poorly. It's time to change their customer service, because they will continue to lose customers. read more

In searching for my new road bike, I'd looked around a few placed in the Union County area to see not only who had the best selection, but who had the most EXPERTISE in the field. I came to Jay's with hopes of learning more about my purchase and investment, and Andrew (one of the associates) helped me BEYOND expectations. The guys at Jay's are EXTREMELY knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating to the needs of the customer. Andrew took me through a fitting, sizing, and eventually, purchase of my new Specialized Allez road bike. They also have group rides every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday which trek for about 20-30 miles per session. I'm now well-informed of my new pickup, and even more inclined to go to Jay's for all of my cycling needs.
