I got tired of tooling around with my Trek Alero, which I ride to the train every weekday, and took it to this spot to get my brakes looked at -- they were not quite braking the way I needed them to. The owner Danny and his warm-hearted technician Juan fixed the issue within an hour or so after I dropped off my rig -- Turns out my bike just needed new brake pads. A 4-pack of brake pads goes for around $10 pads, so that with 20 minutes of labor resulted in a $59 charge. My only criticism is Danny needs to make the pricing up front and visible (Honestly, I don't even know if prices are posted on the walls -- there are tools and decor all over the interior of the store). The "tune-up" buzz word is always a catch-all bill booster, but I just asked for my bike to brake. I can grease my chain myself. I'm glad to help out another local small business owner, and I would recommend their services in the area who is willing to invest a bit into a bicycle because these guys seem to know what they're doing. read more

So I broke my gear shift or what I would later find out was my derailer. It was a Sunday and I wanted to get my bike back on the road by the following weekend. I had ventured into the establishment in the past and thought they were somewhat pricey but it was just for some air‍ This time my bill came to $127 with the labor and I was ok with the price. As I left I noticed the guard rail was a little loose and appeared damaged but not there doing. I asked how much to repair and was told $15 bucks ok great but hold on rider we will need to charge you a maintenance fee. This after only five minutes of leaving the store and having a major project done but why Well it's a different part-area-item! But why charge me again when I could have received a phone call prior to completion and had it done with the first charge? I entered this shop looking for 4 spare screws for my scooter. just 4 screws . He looks at my scooter , takes an old bucket of random screws, and puts in 4 different screws they happen to fit. it took like 1 minute to do this. he looks at me and his dumbass says $35. I told him that's way too much, since just put four random wrong screws in the bike. he asks me " are you a mechanic?" I told him it's not rocket science , I can literally do this myself . he tells me, " don't waste my time ever". I felt like slapping the dude, cuz hes tryna rip me off and fuck up my scooter . he takes the screws off, kicked me out. worst experience ever . read more

TLDR version: The repairs were good, but the customer service was poor, and I would be unlikely to return. I wanted so much to love this business. I moved to South Orange in June and could not wait to repair my bicycle to get into town and ride with my kids. In the end, my bicycle was fixed but my experience makes me unlikely to be a repeat customer, nor can I honestly recommend this business to others. I was quoted an $80 tuneup. My bike required more repairs than what a tuneup covered. I expected this going in. What I didn't expect was to be told my bike was ready and, for the first time, that the bill was more than $200. No good mechanic who tunes up your car and finds other problems would just go ahead and fix them without telling you what he found. Why should fixing a bike be any different? In addition, why, after 4-5 business days, should a customer be made to feel that he's annoying the business for asking when the bike would be ready? When I picked up the bike, the technician only said, "I could either have kept working on your bike or stopped to call you." Meanwhile, there was a manage right next to him. I was excited to hear that there were more than one bike shop in the area I grew up in. I brought over my NEXT Power X bike in hopes that my bike would get new brakes and probably a change in the cable (they were shot). Overall, my bike needed some TLC and I was expecting that it may be a pretty penny, but at least i'll have my little ride back in action and ready to navigate the rocky city roads! When I arrived, I noticed a green sign that said they were only taking clients by appointment. Since I was already there, I stayed outside and asked someone inside if I could simply set up an appointment to have the bike serviced. One of the team members came to assess the bike. I gave him my rendition (rear brakes are shot) of the issue. He took quite the time, looking over my bike before saying anything. Finally he stated that he thinks my bike will be a difficult issue because "department store bikes like Next, Genesis, etc" are hard to replace and a "pain" to repair as compared to higher end bikes. It almost became simply a viewing session for me as he debates whether to take on my bike or not. I was so perplexed that he classified my bike "department store" (aka cheap) and might as well have told me that the bike was a total loss. I simply stated thank you and he concluded with "have a nice day" which truly felt sarcastic, but that may just be me in my feelings at that moment so I will make that matter moot. And as someone who was raised in the area and experienced unnecessary elitist practices, this experience surely reminded me of the many reasons of my like/dislike relationship with Maplewood. I went to the bike shed's website to see if perhaps they were a niche shop that focused primarily on higher-end bikes, hence, why my "department store" bike couldn't be serviced. No where on their website does it say anything about focusing on high-end bikes. I then read some of the Yelp reviews; most of the bike owners are Trek owners with one owning an old road bike; with that assessment, I don't understand why it would have it been brain surgery in the cycling world to repair my brakes and replace my cable. But that's the reason why I, a novice, wanted to count on a a business that I assumed was an expert. Obviously, I won't be back due to my bicycles not meeting the caliber or standard of bikes they choose to work on. My only recommendation is that if you can not work on mainstream, or dare I say "cheap bikes" because they're a pain or "difficult", I suggest being upfront on your website. Update the Repair & Services section with language around that, incorporate it in your FAQs, post it on social media, or heck, post it on a banner in front of your store to ensure customers like me who have won't waste their time and energy lugging their "department store" bike to your shed. If my experience wasn't the greatest, why 2-stars instead of 1? Because the associate came out to assess it. If you have one of those Cannondales or Treks or Giants, go for it, seems like they ready to service you with top-tier customer service. If you aren't may I recommend, The Urban Cyclery Shop which is just a few blocks down and The Newark Community Cycling Center located just a few doors down from NJ PAC. read more

Phenomenal bike shop! Danny took the time to show me what I missed doing a bike repair and was super helpful. After years of only going to Trek dealerships, I decided bike repair was too expensive and decided to take it into my own hands. When I couldn't figure out how to free my locked freehub, they came to the rescue! When I called around, bike shops wanted cleaning and diagnosing fees, I got my bike fixed for less than what other shops would have charged just to look at it. Instead of just fixing it and brushing me off or being upset for not taking it to them in the first place, they explain to me what I missed and gave me tips on things to do in the future. I really hope to see some classes and rides because this shop is run by some pretty cool passionate people! read more
