I was so scared but he made it so that I felt so safe with him. Booked a one hour surf lesson with Kenny. It was my first time surfing. Price was right, included one hour lesson, wet suit, and one hour practice. The lesson gave me confidence to be in the ocean, the lesson was easy to follow, and I got up on the board. Thanks for turning me on to surfing. read more

Tommy was a very experienced and competent coach for my two teens. He was also understanding of the different skill levels (1 of my teens never tried surfing before). He started out with warm ups, a bit of "theory", then right away into the shallow water for some guided surfing. Other places nearby seemed to spend an eternity on the beach practicing the wake up (going from prone to standing position on the board). Very reasonably priced. An hour of instruction and guided practice plus an hour alone was perfect for beginners. My teenagers were tired after two hours of activity. I spent the 2 hours in the water shooting pics and video, laughing and encouraging my kids wishing my shoulder was in better shape:( Don't let the look of the shop turn you off. It's very small and crowded with surf stuff and bikes, but the boards and wet suits were in good shape. If we had more time we would have definitely gone back to just rent boards and wet suits also at a competitive price. read more

J's Rental was a great place to go to on Venice beach. They offered great surf lessons with Wagner Lima. The owner has a great attitude and helped my girlfriend and I feel at ease. This place is worth every bit of the five star rating. The employees are the most cooperative and friendly in al of Los Angeles County, always saying hello even if you're not renting from them. They have always accommodated me and my heavy weight when I get my boards from them. (They're the only place I've found that rents surfboards over nine or ten feet) and I was even more impressed when, yesterday they fixed an old Frankenstein bike that no other bike shop around here could seem to fix. They opened a second store up on Westminster and the big bearded fellow is hands down the best bike mechanic I've dealt with since I bought the money-pit tricycle that I ride around the beach. I'd recommend J's to anyone for their rollerblade, surfboard, bike, trike, and anything else you can ride around the beach, needs. Even when I left my stuff at their place, they looked for my number and got ahold of me, letting me know that they'd keep it safe until I returned. They're the best. read more

Sort of sketchy bike for bike rentals. They gave me a messed up old bike with several non operational gears. Rather than apologizing, one of the staff called me a "princess" for asking for a working bike. Then they still charged me for the bike I returned after 10 minutes which I couldn't use. read more

We rented a long board surf board from Jays. The board had duct tape on areas of the board when we rented it, it should of been a red flag. They assured us it was fine. 30 minutes into our surf broken in 1/2 at the duct taped area. We called them immediately to let them know, they assured us they would not charge us. When we went back the owner told us we had to pay $150 for the already very used surf board. We thought we rented a fiberglass board but it was a cheap foam long board. We argued about the price but they refused to return my drivers license. This was a total scam and rip off. It really ruined our family vacation over this extra cost. I will never go and take my friends here again!!! I came here today with my friend who are visiting LA, around 6.30 pm and asked what time they close. There was a super kind guy who told me they close at 8pm. We came back at 7.10 pm, saw another guy(a young guy with a hat) this time and said I want to rent one bike. First, he said very rudely they close at 8 and we have to return the bikes before 8. Afterwards, he asked why we want to rent one bike. I said because I already have one and I want to rent the other one for my friend. He gave us paperworks. We signed the papers then I asked when we should Pay. He said we can pay either before or after the ride. My friend said she can pay right away. All of sudden, he started to yell us and said "I need a id for the bikes, I don't need money now!" I really wanted to leave at that moment but I knew how badly my friend wanted to ride a bike so we didn't. My friend said she had her passport with her and she didn't want to live there. I asked the guy if we only show him the passport(I wanted to try my chance), it will be work or not. He kept yelled us more and said "Look we cannot give you the bike without you leaving us an id etc." I said then we won't rent the bike. He just throw the dossier to the wall very angry and went outside. I finally lost my patient and yelled too "Hey, if you have an id and whatever prosedure, you should tell your customer in advance (he never mentioned before)!!! Also you cannot yell and be mean to us because I asked you a question. I live in this neigborhood. If you mean to me like this how you expect to me bring my friends next time. There is a something called customer satisfaction which you should learn." and end of the story. I am so sorry for the people who need job so badly when I see the hateful guys who doesn't deserve and apppreciate what they have like this one. read more

Wagner is the best surf instructor!!!! We started on the beach and he gave me a really good overview of what to expect in the water and how to position myself on the board. Once in the water he was with me the whole time, teaching me how to read the waves, when to pop up, and what to do once I was standing. I got up right away and am now addicted to surfing!!!! I already booked another lesson and can't wait to get back in the water with Wagner! read more

My sister and I visited Venice Beach and were trying to find the best deals for a surfing lesson. We had originally booked reservations with a different company in Santa Monica for $60 per person, but we passed J's and decided to see if they could give us a better rate. We were approached right away and told that we could have an hour and a half lesson for $50 with Wagner Lima- which we delightfully accepted. We were very happy that it was a private lesson and that we would be given full attention during the lesson. Wagner gave us very high quality wetsuits and two surfboards. We walked to the beach and Wagner gave us a short tutorial on the sand before bringing us into the water. We were able to stand up right away and spent the next hour surfing the waves. Wagner was an amazing teacher. He was extremely personable, attentive, and welcoming, and had a great method of teaching so that we were both able to stand up and ride the waves- just as he'd promised! Our surfing lesson with Wagner was definitely the highlight of our trip and I recommend anyone visiting Venice Beach to stop in there and take a lesson with him. read more

Was a little concerned by some of the reviews and the picture online (will forever be referred to in our circle as Shady Jay's). But given that they were the only place open early in the morning for surf rentals (added bonus - they don't just carry soft boards!) didn't have a choice but to check it out. So glad that we did. Patrick is the perfect SoCal surfing gentleman/scholar (sorry if you weren't going for this). Not only did he get us in and out on great boards (wet suits had been ridden a little hard but what do you expect for rentals) but his advice on surf breaks that day was priceless. Instead of getting hammered locally we were able to find a great spot up north that was well worth the drive. Got to give Jay's credit for taking our vacation over the top! But be forewarned ... when Patrick tells you that it's been warm and you don't need a wetsuit, remember that he is super human and that you my friend likely are not! read more
