I had **the worst** experience I have ever had at a hair salon with Jeffrey. He and his staff were difficult to communicate with, rude, and dismissive. Avoid! I have long curly hair that can only be cut dry, because once wet it's difficult to see how much is coming off. Before booking, I confirmed by phone that Jeffrey cuts dry hair. At the salon, I spoke with Jeffrey at length about the particularities of my hair, what I was looking for, and confirmed the dry cut. He responded with a generic stump speech ("cutting hair is like building a house, you have to have the right foundation"). He then said we were ready to shampoo my hair. I repeated that I was only comfortable with and had booked a dry cut. He insisted four or five times that he knew what he was doing and we should shampoo my hair. It was quite uncomfortable. I agreed to let him shampoo. Once we were back in the chair, it was clear he was cutting how he wanted and hadn't listened to anything I'd said. My hair was wet and I couldn't see how much he was taking off, exactly the situation I had tried to avoid by saying at every stage that I was only comfortable with a dry cut. Jeffrey had not seemed to register anything I said. I didn't want to risk losing months of hair. For the first time in my life, I stopped a haircut mid-session. I politely asked his assistant why she had booked me for a dry cut if she knew Jeffrey would want to cut wet. She shrugged. The impression I had was that this salon just says yes to any potential customer. The salon refused even a partial refund of the $209 fee. I'm left with an uneven haircut that had to be fixed by another hairdresser. Jeffrey's staff wrote me an aggressive and dismissive follow-up email, saying, "After consulting with our team, we didn't find any issues/complaints about your cut." That sums things up well: This salon will cut your hair how they want rather than how you want, and they will be the judge of whether you have any issues or complaints. read more

I have a lot of hair, thick, curly and plenty to deal with. I only trust one person to deal with my locks, unfortunately she lives in LA and I'm here in NYC. Finding a hairstylist who can deal with this mane is difficult- thankfully I found JBW and Jeffrey. I have long mid back length hair with curls and sometimes they work with me and sometimes they don't. Wanting something short and cooling (its going to be a hot and humid summer) I came to Jeffrey. He taught me how to take care of my curls- what to do and not to do. Gave me a complementary treatment and follow up so I can go a little bit shorter come July. Jeffrey's been cutting my tight curls since his last location, and I followed him to his new, fabulous salon. I've been lucky to find some excellent curly hair stylists while in New York, but Jeffrey takes it to the next level. He is a true hair artist. The first time I saw him he pointed out that though the Mixed Chicks product I was using did wonders to eliminate my frizz, it was also weighing my curls down. He was right. He took me back to a simpler gel, and cut my hair shorter than it had been in a while (with my permission, of course.) It was adorable. And we've been growing my hair out ever since. Let me start by saying I travelled from DC to NY just to get my haircut here. For reference I have curly hair which is very fine and people usually don't know what to do with it, and end up butchering it. So I came to see Jeff Ching and boy was this a 5* + experience! Jeffrey is PHENOMENAL, he's an artist, a hair scientist and a visionary all at once. He spent almost 2 hours with me on my first hair cut/styling here, and taught me SO MUCH. The salon is on Lafayette, it's a very clean black/white palette, and is super cozy. Everybody is super friendly and relaxed here, it's a down-to-earth vibe and I was seen by Jeffrey right on time! He first showed me different angles of my hair to point out flaws in my previous cut (which I knew had issues but didn't realize it was so bad) and oh boy: my hair in the back was lop-sided and a whole chunk was missing in the middle-back of my head, it was a crazy look! but seriously how often do we get to see the back of our hair, and what someone's done to it. This process was an amazingly revealing intro to what he was going to do to fix it, and what his vision was for future cuts . Jeff goes by what suits you, its not some cookie-cutter experience for curly hair either (e.g Devachan) it's uniquely about you, your facial structure, and accentuating your best features etc, its perfect! As my dry cut was coming together I saw my head transform from the dreaded 'triangle' look, to balance, bounce, volume! it was incredible! He taught me awesomely simple techniques to style it and get the best curls. I've never walked out looking this hot after a haircut, I usually have to go home and re-style it after a cut. But this time I didn't need to and went about my day looking great and held the style well into my night out. I got SO many compliments from friends and strangers, my hubby even said "That's the best hair-cut you've ever had" - wow! my hubs doesn't throw compliments around easily, nor is he a man of many words. so that's saying A LOT. It's not cheap (but not super pricey either) and it's worth every last penny. Curly girls you'll only be going twice or 3 times a year. I realized when I left that I under-tipped a little (just calculating badly) and I feel super guilty about it, BUT I will come to Jeffrey for ALL my future hair journeys for as long as I live in this country. This was seriously the most inspiring, educational, laid back experience I've ever had going to the salon. If you have curly hair, don't even think twice about it and come and see this amazingly incredible hair magician. He also has clients all over the country and travels often to other cities, so you never know he might be in your neighborhood some time. Tiana is extremely creative & creates beautiful, unique and manageable styles. She mentioned that she does a lot of traditional cuts on longer hair which really surprised me since she has an awesome ability to create a bunch of new looks out of one very short hair style (like mine). I was shocked that most of her clients had traditional cuts, not asymmetrical, edgy cuts. That's when I realized that she's great with styling all looks and lengths of hair. She also corrected a really large color problem that I had a while back, which is how I met her. I'm naturally a brunette, but a while ago stylist tried to make me platinum. It didn't work, and my hair was very yellow with shades of, grey, lavender, blue, and green. I wish I was kidding. Broke and in a panic, I purchased a groupon. Tiana met me and evaluated the situation. She corrected the color with ease, gave me a sassy, sexy, but professional cut to match my new hue, and at the end we were both laughing about the previous color fiasco I had when I walked in. Tiana's great because she's extremely humble about her talents. She's also a bar method instructor, athlete, and dancer. All of her creative influences show in everything that she does. No matter how amazing my cuts and color turn out, she never gives herself any credit & instead focuses on how happy she is for me, the client. "You look so awesome! You better go out tonight." Found this gem while searching on Yelp for salons in the Soho. Swayed by all the positive reviews I decided to give it a shot. I called to schedule an appt and was warmly helped and notified who my stylist would be: Raphael. Upon arrival, Boni (I believe was her name) was very sweet and welcoming. I was given a robe and Raphael met me to begin my styling session (haircut). I brought a picture of what I wanted, he asked me several questions about my hair, etc. We proceeded to get my hair washed (bonus the chair is pretty much a flat bed = comfy) and then on to the haircut. I was beyond pleased with the results and will be going back in 4 weeks for my complimentary bang trim = bonus! Overall really great experience and I'm looking forward to going back. Followed my hairdresser here with no regrets. Andreas is a perfectionist. The salon is also perfection. Clean, organized, modern, attentive from the moment you step off the elevator. You are escorted to a room to change, they take your coat, offer you a beverage, honor your appointment to the second. Maya will give you a shampoo that will put you to sleep with zenful cranial massage. The sinks are fitted with a cushioned neck support to prevent neck kink from the porcelain edge. The chair reclines and you....zzzzz...I'm sorry, dozed off for a sec. The bathroom has one of those schnazzy Japanese toilets that spritzes and air dries your bottom if you so decide... Oh, the haircut? Yeah, awesome and precise... There's a reason why this place has perfect 5 star reviews. Take the 6 train to Canal and its a short 2 block walk. Keep in mind to make an appointment. Its a second floor business with little street traffic, so you can walk in, but you will wait if the staff has appointments, so just call them ahead of time. read more

When I first found Jeffrey last summer, I knew I had found the dry-cut stylist for my curly hair I had been searching for. Jeffrey is a gifted stylist, but more than that, he is sweet and humble and truly cares about his clients. It's really a joy to watch him evaluate and cut each curl in the mirror. The result is fabulous and the first time I went, my hair grew out so beautifully, I didn't need to return for months. By the time I needed to schedule my second cut, Jeffrey had just opened his own place. The new salon is beautiful - exposed brick, open floor plan with tall mirrors between chairs, and sleek black leather chairs. I had my hair cut by Nella and she was wonderful! She was completely professional, while still being delightfully personable! I highly recommended this salon! Thanks Nella! Ok, update. I get home totally happy, and spend some time looking at the cut, and realized that I wanted more of a change. I felt so silly for not realizing it while I was in the chair. Despite my shame for being a silly indecisive girl, I got up the courage to call the salon to see if they would let me come back in. When I called they were more than happy to help and got me in just a few hours after I called. When I got there I was worried that Nella might be upset that I wasn't completely satisfied with my cut. But she was so amazingly nice and made me feel so comfortable with my decision to go shorter. Nice, small and relaxing salon tucked away in a nondescript building on Lafayette Street. I come here to get my hair cut by Danielle. I've had many stylists at other salons who are adequate of course but they are not as good as Danielle! I have fine-textured hair and she knows exactly how it should be cut, what angle works best for my face, and she doesn't layer it to death so it looks weird--not surprisingly, her cuts last a while! I never write Yelp reviews, but Anthony was THAT good so I must rave about him to the yelp community and those in search of new hairdressers. Anthony has been my hairdresser since about 2011 and I have followed him from salon to salon. I have thick hair and a lot of it and other hairdressers have had such a difficult time managing all the volume and understanding how my hair is going to grow out and how it works. Anthony was the complete opposite. Ever haircut I get from him is beautiful when I leave the salon and months and months later when it grows out. It totally justified the leap in cost from $25 haircuts to approximately $100 because now I can embrace all the volume my hair has instead of finding it a messy unmanageable blob. I always thought that my hair had no hope but Anthony made me feel different about it and made me realize the right haircut makes all the difference! I have been going back and forth on cutting my hair short for two reasons: (1) I thought I have too much hair for a short bob and (2) I've had very long hair my whole life. For the past 2 years, I have been hesitant about short bobs, coming to Anthony with a few pictures seeing what he thought but ultimately just getting a trim to my long hair. When I finally decided to cut it short and get some color, Anthony just joined JBW. I had no idea what type of short bob I wanted or what kind of color would fit my style/skin color so came in to the salon with just a few pictures and told Anthony to just go with it. Lo and behold, my bob was amazing and the highlights were just on point. All of my friends who were skeptical of me going short had so many compliments for my hairstyle. Thank you so much, Anthony. I went to Jeffrey to get my long, thick, wavy hair cut considerably shorter. I didn't give him a lot of guidance and left feeling unsure about my blunt, mid-length cut but was willing to give it a try. After a couple of days, it was clear that the cut was not working. The bluntness made my thick hair poof out into the dreaded triangle. I called Jeffrey and he insisted I come back in right away. At that new appt, he spent a long time cutting my hair much shorter and adding many more layers, resulting in the exact look I was hoping for - young, fun, playful, and easy to maintain. This second cut was really great. I only wish I'd gotten it the first time. Jeffrey is very good at what he does. As others have said, he's very technical - a scientist. He is also very friendly and makes his clients feel comfortable. I'd definitely recommend but suggest giving clear direction from the start. read more

TERRIBLE. I found this place through Yelp and I was hoping I'd get the same experience as everyone else who left amazing reviews. But I was wrong. If you want hair dye all over your face then this place is for you. I had told my hair stylist, Anthony, that I was heading to an audition after so he was perfectly aware that I needed to look good and clean. At the time he started coloring my hair he would brush over my forehead and side cheeks. (Who does that?) I never had a hairstylist so careless about touching the customer's face. Obviously when he washed off the color he rubbed his fingers (with hair dye) half the way down my forehead and all over my ears and side cheeks. Then he told me to just wait for the color to soak in a bit more. I was not happy already knowing that it will leave dark marks on my skin and I was right. The assistant tried to wash it off by rubbing really hard and using color remover all around my hair line and face and not surprisingly it started to sting because of all the chemicals and rubbing. I didn't come in here to get my face washed, it's a hair salon for Christ sake. This place has nothing but great reviews and I thought I would walk out thinking the same but I'm extremely disappointed. On top of that, the color didn't come out the way I wanted. I have dark brown hair (asian) and all I wanted is to cover up some gray hair matching my roots. The hair stylist sounded very confident that it won't come out too dark and it will be close to my root color. Obviously, that didn't happen either. The color is close to black and it's not what I asked for. I wanted a haircut too but now I don't even want to go back to this place for a wash & blow dry because they'll just wash my face together with the hair. Extremely unsatisfied. read more

He is the CURL WHISPERER. Jeffrey knows how to make anyone's hair look phenomenal, really takes the time to understand what the client is striving for, and is such a good person, it's truly a pleasure anytime I've gotten a Jeffrey cut. She is always very thorough and everyone always complemented on my cut. I finally decided to go short 3 years ago and absolutely love the way she has styled my short cut.
