I came here last week to deliver a Door Dash to Shorewood. It smelled amazing in there! Today I came back with my daughter. They are known for their tortas but have plates such as enchiladas and flautas. We chose a Cubano. They have two sizes, chica or grande. We chose the chica. I'm glad we did because this thing was huge! It had its own twist of a fried hot dog, queso fresco, pork, ham, pickles, mustard, and mayo. If you want to find the best Tortas, you need to go to this place. This my second time ordering food, first time I was with my son and I told him let me try this place out. So we went and bought food. I ordered some chicken tostadas and steak ones too. Then ate some chicken flautas, or taquitos they were delicious, yum. And a Horchata that tasted so good. Love it all, nice experience. The second time I ordered delivery yesterday night, The food I ordered was something different, but it tasted so delicious. I bought some tacos in a Basket, it came in 5, so good, rice with the beans, a steak burrito with the works inside, then I also ordered a steak Milanesa torta omg that tasted so delicious. Best tortas ever. Their tacos de canasta are to die for!! The servers are usually really nice and the food doesn't take more than 10 minutes to be ready if you're taking to go. Dine-in is a little slower but nothing worth complaining about. They have gooood Mexican and or Hispanic music playing at all times which is always a plus. The best torta I've ever had! They specialize on so many tortas with different meats and everything. For my first experience here I was recommended the cubana which is the sand which with ALL THE MEATS! I ordered the big size and was shocked when I seen how huge it was and I couldn't even finish one half. So when you look at the picture just notice how one half took up the whole plate. But the prices are cheap and amazing! They also have a food truck located on 35th and burnham everyday but just a heads up they are cash only food truck but they have a gas station on the corner for ATM if anything! I had ordered the "Pachuqueña" but it was missing cheese, chorizo, avocado and beans. Only had single sad piece of meat, barely eligible to be called a sandwich. When I called to explain the error, I was told that they couldn't do much and that they would try harder next time. First time here and it was certainly delicious. You order at the counter and then food is brought out to you. Every table gets chips and some beans when you sit down. My husband and I didn't know that so we also got guacamole and chips as a side... very limey but delicious. We each ordered a chico torta; I am so thankful we didn't get the grande tortas because the small ones were definitely big and filling. I like this place. We tried a bunch of different tortas among a few people, along with a taco. Disclaimer: the taco was our favorite thing! That's not a hit on the tortas, but really just shows how promising this little restaurant is. It was a carnitas taco, and the pork was succulent. There was a good bit of fatty bits that weren't chewy or off-putting, but melted in your mouth and tasted amazing. There was a nice crisp on the shredded pork and it was rich and super meaty. A really tremendous little taco, especially for $1.60. Now, the tortas. They're fun! The bread is very soft, but because of that has trouble standing up to all the fillings sometimes. Just a bit of a crust on those lovely rolls would have been ideal. Our favorite torta was the Texana, a mix of steak, pineapple, bacon and mozzarella. (All tortas are also topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, a smear of refried beans, avocado, mayo and a choice of jalapeno or chipotle sauce.) The steak was cut into large chunks and mixed with lightly caramelized pineapple and thick strips of bacon, all held together by a substantial layer of melted mozz. It kind of formed one meat/cheese/pineapple patty, and that was actually perfect given all the other messy toppings. The pineapple really made this one pop. I'd suggest trying any of their tortas with pineapple. The breaded and fried steak and chicken were both very tasty. They're in various combinations of other meats and cheese, so pick what you think you'd like. Don't do the hot dog unless you really like hot dogs. I though the hot dog was just kind of weird and a distraction from the chicken milanesa. Steak milanesa, chorizo and cheese is also a great combo worth trying. The breaded steak was much more tender than I expected it to be. The chorizo is mild and they use it sparingly, almost more like a seasoning, which was fine by me since it can be greasy. One thing to note is that if you're mayo-adverse, be sure to order them without mayo. I should have, since there were pockets of lots of mayo in places. Also, skip the turkey, for the love of god. It's processed deli style, which I expected, but it's perfectly round and sliced at least 1/4-inch thick. They popped it on the griddled to lose some of the slime which I'll give them credit for... but it's just not good stuff, especially when there's freshly made milanesa! So, while the tortas were pretty good, I'd probably rather go back to try more of their extensive menu. I will most definitely be back for carnitas tacos! Two small notes: Our servers spoke English very well, so no problems there as others have had. You don't get chips and salsa, you get chips and beans. Everyone gets a small cup of frijoles borrachos, a soup-like mixture of pintos and tons of bacon, with the tortilla chips. read more

It's been a few years since my first visit to JC King's. Back then they had this location, which actually seemed smaller then, and a 2 page menu of a few appetizers and tortas, Mexican sandwiches, and I specify Mexican because "torta" means something else in other dialects of Spanish, such as a cake (torte). I can't recall if their restaurant was my first experience or if it was from one of their food trucks (trailers), typically found parked near 35th & Burnham outside of El Rey or 16th & Greenfield outside of Pete's Fruit Market. On Saturday I went back and was surprised to see the menu had expanded to 5 pages! They are more of a full blown Mexican restaurant now, instead of just a torta shop, although tortas is still what they are known for. The menu features items such as sopes, huaraches, enchiladas, tostadas, chilaquiles, and milanesa, while also featuring a kids menu and 20 different tortas. Tortas include the Puro Toluca with hot dog, eggs, and chorizo, the Hawaiana with ham, mozzarella, and pineapple, the Milwaukee with breaded steak, and the JC Kings with ham, chorizo, and melted brick cheese. I ordered Chilanga, which was filled with breaded steak, ham, chorizo and melted brick cheese. All tortas are made with shredded lettuce and tomato and served on very lightly toasted, yet very soft bread that surprisingly holds together really well! Tortas come in two sizes, chica and grande. The chica is the smaller size but it's pretty big! The grande will leave you with leftovers. Chicas average $6.50 and Grandes average $11.00 You can dine in or carry-out. When dining in, a server will come take your order and bring your food, but when you're ready to pay, you'll have to go to the register to get your tab and pay. There is a large plastic tub at the register to leave a tip, but we handed it to her directly since the container was empty. I wasn't sure if stealing tips was a problem here or not and didn't want to risk the server getting shafted. I consider JC Kings a hidden gem for the tortas alone, but now I want to go back to try other menu items. If you haven't had a torta from JC Kings, give them a try and compare to the others you've had. read more

What a gem this place is! I was in this part of town for work one day and decided to try out JC King's for lunch. I couldn't be happier with my choice. I moved to Milwaukee from Austin last summer, and I have been craving some really good Mexican food since. Let's just say my cravings were satisfied. If I had sat at that table long enough, you probably could have convinced me I was actually in Austin. It was soooo good. I had their signature torta, the name of which I am blanking on, and it was amazing. I got the regular size, as many reviews mentioned how big the grande size is, and I think I made the right choice. I was definitely full with the regular. Before the sandwich came out I was served chips and a small cup of mexican bean soup. This was a first for me, but I loved it. I don't make it to this part of town very often, but when I do, you know where I'll be for lunch. read more

Let me tell you how good this place is. I've been here 4 times in the last month...and I live in Madison! The tortas are GIGANTIC, and stuffed very generously with your choice of filling. We've ordered the smalls in the past, and one small torta each for my boyfriend and I was a FEAST. Last time we went, we ordered one small (for me), and a large (for the boyfriend), and when I picked up the bag, my jaw dropped! The large was literally the size of a baby. Which, because we were haaangry, is not a bad thing. Highly recommend this place, and definitely come hungry, and order the Cubana (has everything in it) with an agua fresca to wash it all down! read more

Ok my dear white friends. I'm from Mexico City, and because of that, I often get the question of "hey man, I'm sick of La Fuente, where is there an authentic Mexican place?" So, there you have it, JC King's. It is located of course, in the south side. It is a small place with maybe 8 tables, and they have two loud flat screen tvs always playing the cheesiest Latin soap operas, but guys always like the sexy actresses haha. I would say the menu is very authentic from Mexico City. Their specialty is Tortas. They are basically a sandwich, on a French type bread, my favorite one is the Hawayana, that one has, lettuce, tomato, mayo, ham, pineapple, avocado, beans, cheese and a choice of jalapeños, or a chipotle sauce, the size is very reasonable, specially if you are a big Mexican like me, and it only costs $5!! you will also receive chips and a dip made with beans and bacon cooked in beer. They also offer Agua Fresca, made with various sweet fruits, their menu includes, tacos, tostadas, burritos, flautas, gorditas etc. For dessert, it is soooo good, pastel de tres leches, (three milk cake) flan, strawberries and yogurt, etc. If you want true Mexican, go there, oh, you don't need your passport but you do need a little Spanish, don't be afraid, just tell them you know Juan. read more

It's no surprise that you can find some great Mexican food around 13th and Oklahoma. The size of the portions, on the other hand, can be quite the opposite. The sandwich combinations are numerous and the menu does a good job of explaining what you'll find on each of each torta configuration, though amid the brick cheese, pineapple, and bacon, there was one torta, the Cubana, that mysteriously described itself as having "everything". How could you not? Oh, and it has to be the grande size, of course, because I ain't no freaking chica. Forunately, the sandwich wasn't a giant gloopy mess of literally everything they have back in the kitchen. Unfortunately, it did seem to include every type of meat, including milanesa, ham, chorizo, turkey, hot dogs, and probably a few others, along with the standard accouterments of lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, avocado, and mayo. It was a big sandwich, but you knew that already. Also, it was dang tasty, but you already knew that, too. The sandwiches are a novelty suitable for whatever food-related travel show you might watch, but the food doesn't suffer in service of it - the giant sandwiches are filled with a variety of components that would have tasted equally delicious in a more reasonably-sized portion, which is what the rest of the customers in the restaurant were eating during my visit. A wise decision, because even after eating half of my torta, I was in for a rough afternoon, and understood all too late that the royal sandwich mascot of JC Kings was not offering an innocent smile to put you at ease, but rather a mocking guffaw as he points at the fool who dares to conquer one of his tasty football-sized challenges. JC King's is a hidden gem in Milwaukee's south side. Best known for their tortas, they also offer a variety of other delicious Mexican meals. My favorite is the "pechugona", I love chicken and this is the perfect mix of veggies and chicken! I definitely recommend stopping in, good for a fast lunch or something to take back home to the family. The service is also very good, Angelica is a newer of their waitresses & she is awesome. Very nice little neighborhood place. Stopped in with a friend, my girlfriend and our kids for Taco Tuesday and I was actually glad it was slow. There was no wait to get in or get seated and the server took our orders for drinks and food almost immediately. We were there for Tacos but when it was all said and done we had quesadillas, tacos, and tortas with all types of meat ranging from chicken, to steak, ground beef and even Tinga. It took a little longer than I expected for the food to come out but it seemed like staff was very low that day so it was understandable. We all devoured everything in front of us. My tacos were loaded up with cilantro and sour cream and everything tastes great! My only criticism would be that the tacos were not loaded up and packed with meat. Again I believe we only paid 1.60 per taco but still, it's nice when they are loaded up, the meat is falling out of the taco, and then you have to use your fork and clean what's left on the plate! Oh man are the tortas good. I stopped into JC's for the first time after the Packer game today and was completely impressed. I didn't know a full on torta restaraunt existed until now. Both my wife and I enjoyed our sandwiches. I got mine to eat there with friends while I got hers for take out. Both were delicious. I strongly recommend the chilanga. If you are going as a couple, do yourself a favor and split the grande. You'll end up saving a few bucks and it's the size of a football. The meats are excellent, as is the bread, and the options for fillings are many and varied. Definitely the best torta I've had anywhere in se Wisconsin. They don't skimp. Ok this is a tough review. The Torta I had was Delicious. The prices are low. The people who worked there the day I went spoke enough english to help us get through ordering with a few dietary needs we had to clear up at our table. It was a really good torta. It was a juice and sauce running down my arms and getting on me Elbows Torta. But, and here it the catch, I felt terrible for the next 24 hours. It sat in my stomach so heavy. I felt actually a ltitle sick and certainly sluggish. Everything in my old review stands. This is a great food truck and thankfully it still hangs out just east of 35th on Burnham. However, I have also eaten at the restaurant on 13th in recent months and that is also a treat. As others have noted they have some very tasty frijoles charros which are pinto beans in a broth with bacon, beer and chiles. They are great! Also their chilaquiles - tortillas fried with salsa and usually served with egg. It doesn't sound that amazing but trust me they are excellent. And the huarache, which I previously would only order at Taqueria Guadalajara in Madison, is very good here. Think of what would be in your tacos instead spread over a thick, toasty, pita-type bread. It's a very small dining room, spare, and unpretentious. Service is ok. Nothing fancy here but excellent Mexican food. read more

How does one even begin with a place like JC's? I was introduced to this place many a year ago and it has remained a go-to ridiculously hungry moment staple of mine. As the name suggests get the crazy big comedically monstrous torta...sure there's the 'chica' size but in all seriousness go for the gusto and share with as many lucky folk you can encounter....I've known one to finish a 'grande' torta but he had just spent the last 4 days in a gas-station pizza laden suburban Sahara. Basically, this thing is huge but in company it won't last long. We stopped in here for the first time last night to try a torta. I ordered a grande for my wife and I to split, though I cannot recall the name of it. I was surprised to see how many choices there were. I thought a torta was a torta, but this place has some really creative ones. The sandwich was good, and definitely big enough to split. It was served on a very soft roll and it had breaded steak, a big chunk of soft white cheese, American cheese, beans, mayo, and avocado. It came with jalapenos and a chipotle sauce that were both tasty. We also ordered what we thought was a side of refried beans and chips, but what appeared to be more of a soup. After reading a previous review, I think they may have just forgotten the means. I plan to call. The chips and the bean and bacon soup were both good, though I think I ate more than a days worth of salt with those. All-in-all, I really enjoyed the meal.
