What can I say except I love the JCI Frito pie with no beans. Chili cheese dogs are good as well.

The gourmet chili dog had a weird bun on it like a bread slice you'd see on a grilled cheese sandwich. I didn't like the taste too much even with all the good components of chili, cheese, and minced onions. Even a Sonic chili dog has better taste. Recently transferred from the City of Chicago to the Clear Lake area has left me hankering for a good Chicago dog. It is difficult to say the least for any Chicago dog to compare to the old neighborhood Vienna Beef stand. Though when I tried the Chicago dog from JCI, I felt like I was back at Byrons on Irving Park and Sheridan. From a Chicagoan to anyone looking for a Chicago dog... its legit. We visited on a weekday evening about an hour before close. To say it was pretty empty, the service was pretty slow. Every employee seemed to be cleaning and preparing for close. The food was lukewarm with the exception of the tots which led us to believe it wasn't fresh, but we were starving so we didn't make a fuss. I was happy when I had saw them bring back JCI back to our area a while back and had been meaning to go visit the establishment for a long time. Unfortunately, when I did I didn't feel I had that great of a value for my visit. On this visit I wanted to try an assortment of the original stuff that they are known for. A hotdog, tator-tots, and Frito-pie. I have to say I was not impressed. The hotdog felt like it was a miniature dog and the Frito-pie's chili was terrible. This place is heartbreaking for the people of this area that loved our Coney Island. There used to be a great Coney Island in Clear Lake on Bay Area Blvd. They used to steam the buns and it was all so good. That one closed and I was crushed. My family has been coming here for 3 generations, and this year while visiting family I decided to include my fiancé in on our tradition. Our cashier, Nathan, was super attentive and sweet. He deserves a raise! Our food came out fast and hot. I always get the same thing and have since I was 6 and it tastes just as good as it ever did! Do not get the Italian Beef Sandwich!! OMG - so salty I called and accused them of dumping salt in there, and was told by the manager and District Manager that the Dip (Chicago Style Au Jus) comes in pre-packaged and that is the way it is - salt being the SECOND ingredient. I am not from Chicago, but eat Italian Beef whenever I go there, and this is a very lame attempt to recreate it. The Beef was not Vienna Beef, it was thick and stringy, and the Au Jus was killer - I love salt, and put it on almost everything, but luckily tried the dip before I did.... but really it is truly inedible. Not only did the staff and management agree with me, they also said they do not eat the Au Jus if they eat the sandwich, but did not offer to refund my money, or even offer me anything else. Poor customer service, and I will never, ever go back. I used to love the one on Bay Area Blvd and went there every Sunday for many years until it closed - couldn't beat the .79 cent chili dogs - and could feed a family of 3 for around $6. My parents lived in Houston for 28 years. I lived there for 21 years. 9 1/2 years ago my parents moved to Waco. And what is the #1 place my mom misses? James Coney Island. Many times I have driven "home" to Houston to visit over the past decade, I have had to stop at a James Coney Island location and get a dozen hot dogs (all the toppings on the side) and drive them to Waco on my way back to Dallas. Well the three of us made it back to Houston in December for the Texas Bowl. Each of us had at least one place we wanted to visit before we went back home. Mine was Star Pizza. Dad's was Pappa's Seafood. Mom's was a given. Sadly, neither myself nor my dad will eat hot dogs. We stopped here on Wednesday, December 29th about lunch time, on a gloomy rainy nasty day before heading to Reliant Stadium. My mom had two of the Texas Style (no onions, sub mayo for the mustard). My dad had the large Chili Pie and I had two of the Polish Dogs (Texas Style, no mustard). The Polish Dogs were yummy. This little hot dog chain was a great find. It offered meals with combo pricing and shareable sized meals. When you first walk in, you notice a menu with traditional American food (hot dogs, burgers, and shakes); however there is an expansion of a regular menu to include gourmet hot dogs-which are delicious and huge but also they are at a reasonable price with all the accompanied toppings tasting freshly made/cut. Although it is set up as a chain restaurant, the vibe is a bit more intimate. I'm definitely going back, it is a new favorite of mine when I want hot dogs! This is the worst service I have ever received from any James Coney Island I have ever been to. First when we come in the cashier Isabel just stared at us and didn't greet us or even ask what we wanted. We began to order and she started pushing buttons on the screen like it owed her money. She didn't repeat anything back to us that we ordered and had the worst stink face I have ever seen. This girl didn't not just want to be there but she wanted to burn the place down. I gave her my order very loudly and clearly so she could hear. Everytime we ordered a drink she just stood there and stared at the cups waiting for us to reach over the counter and get the cups. Once we paid and waited for our number to be called. When our number was called we went to get our food and the order was completely wrong. It was missing food and the food we did get was nothing that we ordered. The cashier Isabel did not get hardly anything right so the manager leny came over and we told him the order was completely wrong. He then proceeded to call me a liar saying that I didn't order what I had indeed ordered. I told him that his cashier wasn't doing her job right at this point she started to walk over to get into the mix when the manager leny stopped her and told her she was doing a great job which is a lie. I told him what I had ordered and he said that I needed to be sure because he was going to have to throw them in the trash as if I cared. He then said I better be sure what I ordered because he wasn't going to make anything else for me. Once he gave me my hotdogs with barely any cheese on them I took them back to my table and noticed I didn't get my fries I ordered and had to walk back up there to ask for them. The manager leny proceeded to make them and then just throw them on the counter and walk away with out any sort of apology. For a business that has "service is our top priority" on there front window when you walk In these to incompetent people managed to make that a lie. Never going here again read more

Visiting Houston and the hot dog snob that I am I decided to give it a shot. Tasted the legacy coney, the NY beef hot dog, the corn dog and the fries. The coney was average (they are better in Detroit and Cincinnati), the NY Dog was tasty and cooked right but was $3.39 which may be a tad overpriced, I guess I'm paying for the real dish it comes out on. The corn dog is clearly frozen and fried in the back so you can buy that anywhere. The fries had been sitting there for a while (you can tell) and it was a very small portion for the $1.99 (think the value size at Burger King for a $1.00). The food is three stars, the value is two, the parking situation is one. PS: check your ketchup bottles more often, took a visit to four tables before I found one that wasn't empty. read more

Yuck, I've come to this location 3-4 times when I get the urge to have a giant hotdog, and every time I leave saying I'll never be back. But give it a year or two and I forget and I go back and get grossed out again. This time I walked in and there was no one in the restaurant, that should be a sign that it's time to go. (Not just customers, I'm talking cashiers, cooks, manager.... No one) after about two minutes, the cashier comes out from the back and takes my order, I ordered two sausage dogs and a drink, and then I sat down (at basically the nearest table), A few minutes goes by, and he brings out my tray and set it on the counter 4-5 feet from me and calls out the order "two sausage dogs".... (Two things; one, I am an entire 5 feet away why not just bring it to me, and two, I am literally the only other person in the building, I don't think that there was going to be any confusion as to who's order was ready, it's just so unbelievably impersonal, why not even "here's your order sir", or "here's your food", heck "ready" is more acceptable. The only thing that would make it slightly more kafkaesque would be to yell out "Order 267, your food is ready..." Sofar it's been just strange, not disgusting, but because they have what looks to be 4 gallons of spicy mustard on top, I didn't really check the hot dogs to see if they had been made in Egyptian times and then mummified, I just figured it would be a hot dog. Boy I was wrong... I bit into it and it snapped not unlike a slim Jim. That's OK when you're expecting to buy the into a meat stick, it's not acceptable when you're expecting to bite into a hot dog. After traveling off as much of the mustard as I could I realized that the hotdog actually looked somewhat like the exceptionally wrinkly finger of a 98-year-old woman from Fort Lauderdale. I was exceptionally hungry and so not wanting to hassle with someone who obviously didn't like their job, I just ate as much as I could stand, but near the other end, I gave up as it turned more and more into a piece of hot dog jerky, and I gave up, spit out the junky end and went to leave; trying to find a trashcan to throw away this mess. But they don't have them because you leave the food on the table, and the cashier told me so, at the end of which he asked how was it? To which I answered not at all good, and he proceeded to say, yeah, they looked pretty dry, which yet once again boggles my mind as he was obviously aware of the problem, decided to serve the food anyways, and then not bat an eye when someone says that the food is not good. But best of all is that after telling him that the food is not good, to which he answered that he knew it was not good, he basically shrugged his shoulders and was like what are you going to do, no apologies, no can I make something else for you, just basically the equivalent of "Yep, I don't care, that was some pretty bad food!" So, Webster James Coney Island, never again will I eat your hot dogs, (at least not for another 2-3 years when I forget this experience, try this location out, and leave regretting it again. read more

When your order an Original, all the cashier's ask " How would you like that" They of all people should have been trained on the companies history and already know what that would be. To be told I cannot have my order. Then she told the angry line out the door and I quote "I suggest you go eat somewhere else" I was in shock! So reason's I'm a fan of James Coney: *They've got awesome creative combination flavors of hot dogs that make me want to try every flavor so I take 10 minutes struggling on what to order despite that it's a fast food place. *I vow that I'll try every flavor someday, but they keep coming up with new flavors, so it's a never ending vicious cycle that keeps sucking me back in. * They're not skimpy on their toppings! * The French fries are crispy and somewhat golden with good oil to salt ratio. * They've got a spacious clean dining establishment with TVs. * The presentation of the hot dogs is nicely put together and not a hot sloppy mess even though it's going to end up becoming one. At least they leave that up to you to do. * Portions are large and very filling for the price. * Quality of hot dog meat makes you think this could pass for gourmet instead of artery clogging a.k.a less guilty feeling of indulgence despite the half pound of toppings. These are all things I like and can live with on occasion and that's why I'll keep coming back to JCI when I'm in Houston! P.S. I saw JCI's newest commercial the other day where they want us to believe they are a true burger joint now. Can't believe I fell for it. Before I go any further, let me say that I give their chili and tater tots a full five stars any day. However, today was not that day. We showed up for lunch about 2 pm Sunday afternoon. A lot of help was in the kitchen and I should have known better than to think that meant great service.It just meant more mouths to yap. After ordering a chili burger and a Juicy Lucy combo, we set down and immediately heard the number before ours being called. Hey! we are next, not much of a wait coming? Was I wrong...after about 10 minutes I go to the counter and see ouir burgers sitting on a tray. They told me after a minute that they were waiting on fries and tots that were "coming up now". Again, not so. After a couple of minutes, we got our food. Nice fresh hot tots and fries but cold cheap meat burgers. This meat makes Mickey D's look like Angus. This has to be one of the worst hamburgers ever. I ordered my Juicy Lucy all the way with all the veggies and it came with only pickles. What a joke. I will still go back for tots, chili and premium dogs but NO BURGERS!! Trust me. read more

This place was horrible food wise. The chili was so thin! Like water and spices. When i got my chili cheese fries, I thought they forgot the chili, but it was there- a watery puddle at the bottom. Their shakes are thick and creamy, but the syrup they use is so cheap tasting, and the ice cream itself is pretty flavorless. Note: their coney-chili is called a sauce so there are no big beef bits, and the cheese seems to be some sort of cheese-wiz concoction that's fed from a hose via a cheese gun. I don't know what happened. The food used to taste better. The chili was lukewarm, the hot dogs were lukewarm, even the french fries were lukewarm. We used to visit the JCI on Bay Area Blvd. (before it closed), and they ran a good ship there. The buns were always steamed properly, the franks were always hot, the fries were always fresh. Horrible drive through service. We tried to put in our order at the drive up speaker/menu, but after repeating the first item 3 times, and a long pause we were asked to pull forward. I placed our order again, having to clarify two more times and waited 15 minutes total. We were the only car in line. When our order finally was handed over it was wrong and the person in the drive through, Yesi, argued with me about it and charged me to fix it even though she had already overcharged me by ringing up the wrong thing in the first place. By this time there were 5 cars behind me so we just left without speaking to management. We won't be back. read more

We love their Texas dogs. The corn dogs are good too. We always go through the drive-thru. Everything is always hot and fresh.
