"MOTHERFUCKINGTITS!" I thought to myself as I chewed a long ribbon of garlic and chive pappardelle. I made a sauce to go with it and it was good but a pasta sauce is like a dress: It's only as hot as the girl it's on. A dress could be designed by Armani but if you put it on someone who looks like she swallowed a UFO, it might as well be a tent. Put a potato sack on a CrossFit girl, though, and she looks ready to walk the red carpet. Jean Louis's pasta is Michelle Jenneke. This top-shelf pasta costs more than your average packet of Barilla because it's handmade and flavored well. I bought the sun-dried tomato fettucine and the garlic and chive pappardelle. The second I dropped the pappardelle into the water, it filled the apartment with a herby aroma that smelled like it should have been coming from a kitchen in Avellino dominated by a 300-pound mamma. It made my mouth water. The pasta took about ten minutes to be just a little over al dente. It tasted amazing. It would have been good just with some salt and a drizzle of olive oil. But I had some gently sauteing garlic waiting. I also toasted a chile de arbol for a few minutes, tore it up, and threw it into the hot oil with the garlic to infuse the dish with some heat. I saved some of the pasta water and immediately threw the drained pasta into the hot oil. I then threw in some homemade chicken broth and turned the heat to high. I tossed it well and then grated some Parmesan cheese over the pasta to thicken the sauce and flavor it further. Then I tossed in a few tablespoons of Calabrian chili sauce and the juice from a lemon. Not too much because I wanted the pasta to be the star of the dish. I reduced the sauce, thickening it even further, and gave the pan a couple of vigorous tosses. I plated it and garnished it with some chopped parsley. It was sex. The pasta held the sauce well and I tasted garlic and chive in every bite. Garlic and chive is a fantastic combination for pasta dough. It's going to be hard to go back to regular pasta after this. I would take the Commuter Rail to Salem just to get more pasta from Jean Louis.

I was surprised to find a handmade pasta shop in Salem. Call me foolish but the city just doesn't have that Italian vibe like say the North end or the Back Bay fancy shmancy feel. Who would know this hidden gem was here?. The store front is very modest with just a sidewalk sandwich board to announce thier specialities. When you walk in it looks and feels like Paris and the store attendant ( idk if this was the owner or pasta maker) had French accent! How weird is that ?! Loaves of yummy French bread stacked neaty along side tables of bagged and sorted pasta. All with unusal combinations of flavors. For example I bought garlic with chives and burbon garlic. Among others available - sea salt and onions..... hmm? Too many to list and I'm thinking they change the flavors as often as the variety of veggies seasons change. The only things I'm sad about (which is why I rated a 4 star ) was all the pasta is dry , nothing still moist with refrigeration. Maybe this is a more European style pasta shop ? The cost was reasonable. One bag 8-10 ounce is for two servings $8. I will go back, the flavor was great but very subtle. Best with a light sauce or we did french butter with grated cheese. I think a heavy tomato sauce would over power these delicate strands of very unique pasta.

Sweet potato, raisin and walnut ravioli with Gorgonzola pear dressing!

I have never written a review, but this pasta is so good, I had to. My co worker lives a few blocks away from this store, I read the yelp reviews for it and told her to check it out. She called me from the store and told me the flavors of raviolis in the case. It was almost impossible to decide on one, but I picked sweet potato, raisin and walnut with a bottle of Gorgonzola pear dressing. I just made it and couldn't believe how good it was. It was better than anything I've had at a restaurant that was not in France, Italy, New York or Boston. I am a food snob and this blew me away! My friend spent $80.00 there and she is addicted! She is raving about the artichoke and smoked Gouda ravioli. I will make a trip over there on my next payday, I plan to stock my freezer. I guess my friend and I will be joining Jenny Craig in the fall. BTW, for the quality you get, the prices are very reasonable. This is not the kind of pasta you get at the grocery store.

    So many flavors!

The sandwiches, if you got there in time, were divine. Sadly, Jean Louis died in 2023 and the store has closed.

Great shop owner and staff. Owner is from France and is so helpful. Can't wait to try all the ravioli types I brought home tonight.

Delicious, fresh homemade pasta and sauces. A tad on the pricier side but definitely worth it!

No parking, no rest rooms, and nowhere to sit and eat, but I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the speed by which they made the sandwich. -- Italian Sandwich: A heavy beast of a sandwich with a lengthy ciabatta roll stuffed with sopressata, salami, capicola, hot capicola, mortadella with pistachios, asiago cheese, arugula, tomato, onion, seasoned oil, pickles, and hot peppers. --- All of the flavors came through and the meats seemed of very high-quality. The pickles were more noticeable than the hots, but easy to adjust next time. The cheese tasted better as it went along, probably getting closer to room temperature where it really shines. --- The flavors and textures were all impressive with the one exception of the ciabatta-- a little on the firm side, but that could be symptomatic of my late Sunday visit. I give them a pass for that and applaud this VERY good sandwich. --- Incredible value! This had to weigh at least 3 pounds and could easily have fed two people, and for only slightly more than a McDonald's "value" meal. Normally, I would wait and try it again before reviewing, but the city of Lynn isn't easy for me to get to, so now it is and it's an easy 4. The only things holding them back from a 5 are the lack of parking, seating, and toilet.

When arriving to pick up the order in the morning, there were so many staff ready to help - I was picking up two orders and I had one person per order, which made the process so much quicker! They also had people with trays helping customers to their cars when they had a lot of trays to carry. Everything was super quick and efficient and I would definitely recommend for the holidays, or other occasions!

I have been going here for many years and never had any issues until about fourteen months ago…read more Since then all down hill from there. I have purchased trays of food for parties, take out for my family and I have ordered cakes for special occasions. Let's start with the food. One of our favorite dishes is the chicken Broccoli Alfredo one day I picked up a family size and the cream was so sour it smelled! I called the next day and they refunded me. Several months later again cream was bad they refunded me. I explained to the manager this was the second time and they are not rotating their products enough or they are keeping it way too long. Now the desserts! Last year I purchased a birthday cake for my mom and the entire inside was not what I ordered. It happened to be her last birthday cake ever. Thinking maybe it was an innocent mistake I continue to purchase cakes so a few months later I order a cake and my husband and son go to pick it up two hours after I tell them to have it ready. They get there and the cake was never made so they wait one hour for them to rush it. You would think I would have learned my lesson by now but they do make nice cakes. Four days ago I ordered a graduation cake for my daughter. We were having a surprise after graduation gathering at a restaurant. I spoke to the manager and we talked about what I wanted. My sister-in-law went to pick it up today and they lost the slip and the cake never got made! They rush the order and tell us they will deliver it to the restaurant. What a hot mess this cake was! It was supposed to have a smaller fake hat but instead they made a huge hat with fondant that was so big it looked foolish. The cake was supposed to be a very light tint of pink it was pink but it was a Pepto-Bismol pink! It was screaming pink! It was supposed to have black scroll on the sides but there was non. It was supposed to have her picture scanned onto it but no they handed me back the picture with the cake. We still had half of cake left over so we take it home. It did not survive the short ride home. The graduation hat was so damn heavy and the cake was so soft from being made so quickly that they never refrigerated it so it could get firm and set. Instead it was put into a car and rushed to the restaurant. So the ride home it completely fell apart! Basically it looked like we had a cake fight and threw it back in the box. I am so disappointed with the Pastry Shop and it is a shame because they do make good items. There is no organization at this place! Never again and I will make sure I let all my friends and family know. I would seriously reconsider having an event here. They use the same food. Buyer beware! Two star is because the cake taste good even though it looked terrible.
