What a waste! This vineyard has the history, great land, and wonderful views. Most importantly they have a great opportunity to dig into the history of Virginia wine and that opportunity was completely skipped. They are much more interested in taking your order and moving you along the assembly line. For $10 you get a great selection in your sampling and you keep the glass. The employee we had was very knowledgeable about the area and some local history. Beautiful setting and the tasting room was not crowded so we had the full attention of the attendant. The cost of the tasting was $10 with a plain Riedel glass thrown in - I think I would have like a glass with the Jefferson script. I liked their racks to display the wine behind the counter but don't think the direct sun is doing the bottles any favors. All in all the wines were just okay, with the 2008 Meritage and 2010 Petit Verdot making the cut and coming home with us. We'll put them back for a few years, however, to let them mature. Where to start, the view and grounds are absolutely stunning worth the drive from Raleigh, NC alone. The wines range from good to excellent but the service / staff are amazing and so helpful. The first time I was there and bought a bottle, that was not being offered by the glass, of their small batch Pinot Gris, however this Pinot Gris was fermented with its skin in contact. From its unique color and very sophisticated yet refreshing taste on the tongue it has became a favorite wine to drink almost anytime of the year. The staff is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I had to go to Charlottesville so I thought of stopping at the vineyard to replenish my stock of this wine, so I called ahead and spoke to Cynthia and told her what I was looking for and told me she would have them waiting upon my arrival. My wife and I met her and she couldn't have been more helpful, informing us that they had to go looking in the cellar and found them in their last box. I truly hope Jefferson Vineyards will do another, maybe larger batch of this most delicious and drinkable wine. read more

I debated on this and I likely would have had a higher rating under normal circumstances. I don't know. The surroundings are beautiful and you won't be disappointed with that. I also think the scheduled sessions for two hours are well done. However, the wine choices were limited to frankly pretty bad wine. Obviously that's my opinion. But I was disappointed and it seemed more like they were getting rid of wine no one wanted from previous years. Also, the person that served us was rude. And asked how much we want to tip, which IMO is crass. Turn the screen and let people tip. Don't ask them to announce the amount in front of everyone. We left after an hour as we had better experiences at other wineries, so we didn't want to waste more time there. read more

This place is absolutely incredible! The scenery itself is not the most impressive of the vineyards located nearby, but the staff far surpassed my expectations. We had Michael as our tasting expert, and he was quite the blast. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and we even bonded in our interest in chemistry. He had us guess what we tasted in each wine before he told us the description and even shared with us the process to make each wine, and what makes each special. Very nice place! We went on Christmas Eve, so it was obviously too cold to sit outside, but surely it would be nice during the warmer months. We tried the merlot and the vin rouge, both which were delicious and smooth. They were a bit on the pricey side, but so worth it. We got two bottles for our group, as well as some crackers, cheese, and cold cuts. The garlic cheese was amazing, by the way. The indoor area for drinking and dining was very cozy and nice. We had a lovely time there. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. My mom and I loved the story of Don Juan (the prized fighting rooster) and the cat that they feature on their bottles. We came by here around 11am on a Friday. When we walked in, we just kind of stood by the door because it wasn't clear what exactly to do. After about 2 minutes of standing there awkwardly, finally a worker asked if we were here for a tasting and that they would be with us in a minute. We started our tasting and a different lady took over. She was ok, but didn't really offer many details and actually got annoyed when I had to walk away from the counter for a second to take a phone call. The wine was just ok, nothing really stuck out to us and the tasting was $10 which was kind of pricey. The tasting room is small and it's just the tasting counter and register, there is nowhere to sit inside. There are tons of wineries in the area, so I would recommend trying some of the other ones. read more

After my partner and I were told that our tour of Monticello wasn't going to be for another three hours, we decided to drive up the hill and go to Jefferson Vineyards. We loved it! The woman who was administering our tasting was incredibly knowledgeable about the wine and the property, which we didn't necessarily experience at some of the other vineyards we experienced during this trip. The wine was good, but it didn't blow us out of the water by any means. The real treat here, however, were the excellent mountain views while sitting on the lawn in some Adirondack chairs sipping on a glass of wine. Other wineries that had good views were incredibly busy, but Jefferson was relatively quiet for a Sunday afternoon during a holiday weekend. I've been to Jefferson Vineyards twice, and both times it's been one of my favorite experiences when visiting Charlottesville. Sadly I can't recall the name of the gentleman who did our tasting two years ago but I know he still works there, and most recently Julia did our tasting last weekend. Both are fantastic guides through the wine Jefferson has to offer. They provided clear descriptions of the wine, explained how it was made, and provided funny little antidotes that made the tasting very enjoyable. We did the standard tasting and the reserve. I feel like they have a wide variety of wine and something for every type of person who visits. We bought 3 bottles and quite honestly should have bought more. I think I'm going to go online and check out their wine club because even though we live in Northern Virginia, we liked it that much. read more

We went to Jefferson Vineyards over New Years weekend for a trip to the area. We had spent time at James Monroe's Highland and then decided to stop by for a tasting on our way home. The wine itself was good and fairly good pricing compared to other wineries in the area. There was some charm to the area where you do the tasting, but there weren't many people working to provide us with a lot of knowledge about the winery and their products. It was still nice and we came home with a few bottles, but not as charming as some of the other wineries with better views. If you're looking for a nice winery, I would likely suggest Pippin Hill, Trump Winery or King Family Vineyards. read more

We had a relaxing and enjoyable visit to Jefferson Vineyards this weekend. The staff goes above and beyond with COVID precautions so you feel safe and socially distant throughout your stay, and it is clear that management prioritizes their guests' and staff's health. I highly recommend getting a reservation online beforehand. We (stupidly) didn't think to check this and showed up on a busy day but had to be turned away. We made a reservation for the next day and everything went smoothly! The money you deposit to make the online reservation can be used toward a bottle purchase at the winery, so it was a great deal. The wines were delicious and staff were so friendly!! They made us feel quite at home. Snacks and water bottles were available for purchase. Staff all wearing masks, keeping distance, and seen sanitizing tables and chairs between use. We enjoyed our wine flights and a cold bottle of Viognier sitting beneath the trees. read more

My sister-in-law, my wife, and I visited Jefferson Vineyards yesterday. The staff was so amazingly friendly and helpful. They gave clear instructions for the safety procedures and precautions in regards to COVID-19. We all felt very safe under our tent that was socially distanced from the other tents/tables. We were able to bring our own snacks to pair with the flight of wine that we each purchased. We also got a bottle of Vin Rouge 2018 - it was light, refreshing, and had a perfect amount of fruit flavor. The first time we visited, it was just my wife and me. I LOVED this winery! The staff was knowledgeable, they honored the trade discount (in fact, I didn't know it existed. Their manager told me, how great is that?) The staff was so great and genuine in their conversations and the wine was extraordinary. Some of the best Viognier I've had since moving to Cville. Let me start by saying this winery has a special place in my heart - it's where my husband proposed to me, where we spent our first anniversary as a married couple and made many memories. We have not been there in few years due to moving and recently having our first baby. Well this weekend we decided to go again, bringing our 8-month-old son for wine and picnic - because who doesn't love that?! We'd heard it was operating as limited capacity due to Covid so we get there pretty early. As we drove up we saw that it was already one in one out, which was fine, we waited in line. As we got up to the entrance there was an employee working the gate, communicating with the cars as they went in. She asked how many people were in our party and we told her 2, plus a baby. Immediately she responded, "Absolutely no kids are allowed on the premises, please turn around." First, this was clearly a new rule as we'd been there plenty of times in the past with friends kids. So my husband clarified that we'd understood correctly and her response was a very rude, "You should have looked at our website before coming - it says on there. It's a new rule - now you need to leave." I mean, we were both shocked at how rude she was after we waited for 20 minutes and spoke to her for under 1 minute. And of course sad we couldn't go to the winery (first world problems, I know). Anyways, we get why they are limiting it to only 21+ because it makes good business sense if your operating at limited capacity. However, so sad that we were treated this way at a place we love :( read more

This is my favorite vineyard in Virginia. Where else can you experience history, beauty, and excellent wine? My favorite is the 2018 Viognier that has won many awards. The awards don't matter to me; it's just an outstanding wine. Everyone that works at JV is friendly and helpful. You'll feel like you're at home except you're surrounded by beautiful mountains and excellent wines. They are doing an excellent job of keeping visitors as well as staff safe during COVID-19. read more

The lady conducting our tasting was very nice and attentive. The wines themselves though were not to my taste. All of them seemed to fall flat for me. Jefferson is a great place to spend an afternoon with friends. Its a lovely drive to the winery, and there is plenty of parking (if you don't mind going around back). We really enjoyed hanging out on the lawn with bottles of wine and snacks - we stayed around for hours on a perfect March afternoon. We didn't have the best experience with tasting (which we did first in order to pick out a bottle to buy), but it's clear that depends on who you get. The lady helping us gave us no attention at all, no explanation even with me asking her questions. The guy helping people nearby was clearly the opposite, friendly, warm, giving all kinds of information about the grapes and wine making process to his customers. The line to pay for the tasting and buy another bottle was honestly insane, we waited for like 30 minutes - there was just one very slow lady working the one register. But once we made it outside with out bottles (don't forget to ask for a chiller) and snacks we were happy campers! read more

Having probably been to every winery in the Charlottesville area, I can safely say that Jefferson Vineyards is among the best. The entire experience here, from their tasting room, to the tasting process, the wines served and even the stemware they're served in are far and away superior to their competitors in the area. I have been to Jefferson a couple of times and have found that their wine tasting room is never packed, and that the employees conducting our wine tastings are friendly and approachable, but informed and willing to engage in serious conversation about the wine if you're looking for it. A friend and I were here recently and tasted their 2010 Meritage which is exceptional. The emphasis on quality here really shines through. Wine tastings are done using Riedel stemware which reflects a certain respect for the wines and also gives the experience a more upscale feel. A Riedel wine glass is included to take home with each wine tasting which is always nice. At $10 per wine tasting, Jefferson's is probably among the more expensive in the area, but I think it's worth the extra few bucks to really taste some special wines.
