The lady conducting our tasting was very nice and attentive. The wines themselves though were not to my taste. All of them seemed to fall flat for me. The Vin Blanc was the only one that I found to have any decent flavor, though not much. When it comes to wineries, to each his own, but this is one place I wouldn't revisit. read more

Jefferson is a great place to spend an afternoon with friends. Its a lovely drive to the winery, and there is plenty of parking (if you don't mind going around back). We really enjoyed hanging out on the lawn with bottles of wine and snacks - we stayed around for hours on a perfect March afternoon. We didn't have the best experience with tasting (which we did first in order to pick out a bottle to buy), but it's clear that depends on who you get. The lady helping us gave us no attention at all, no explanation even with me asking her questions. The guy helping people nearby was clearly the opposite, friendly, warm, giving all kinds of information about the grapes and wine making process to his customers. The line to pay for the tasting and buy another bottle was honestly insane, we waited for like 30 minutes - there was just one very slow lady working the one register. But once we made it outside with out bottles (don't forget to ask for a chiller) and snacks we were happy campers! read more

I came here today with three friends, and found it to be a decent winery. I wasn't impressed with the views, but the wines themselves weren't bad. The tasting costs $10, and you get to keep a cool glass with an imprint of Jefferson's face! I also liked the wooden lawn chairs and patio area with tables outside. The variety and number of wines during the tasting was nice; I've paid more for less at other VA wineries. I'm sure anyone can find something to like here. While the individual tastings are tiny, you can re-taste as you'd like, and a full-glass pour is cheap. There are two small tasting rooms - only one has indoor seating. We happened to go into the one without the seating (on the left), and the girl who poured our wines was friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. This room also has some cute trinkets for purchase, including local chocolates, magnets, and other gifts. Bottom line: this is a modest winery, good for a small group outing. The views aren't the best for photo-taking, but the range of wines in the tasting is pretty good. read more

Overall a good experience. The main tasting room was busy, so we went to a room across the courtyard. Our server was Stone. He was very friendly and gave a good introduction into each wine. It was $10 to taste 11 wines and you get a free Riedel glass of quite nice quality. We also got to re-taste a couple of the wines again. For $10 it seems great value. The bottles of wine to take home however are a little expensive however. They vary from $18 to $30. We went off-peak and the parking lot was quite full. I would imagine it probably gets too busy in the summer months. read more

I liked the wines. If the people would've been nice, I would probably go back. I've been to many wineries, but this was by far the worst customer service experience I've ever had. I was uncomfortable for most of the time spent there. We all got bad vibes before we even stepped out of the car. It's not relaxed, they patrol the property like they're just waiting for someone to make trouble. We waited as someone backed out of a parking spot only to be stared down as we pulled into the space. Two unfriendly employees approached questioning us about whether or not the person beside of us could get out. When my husband told them there was plenty of space, they took an attitude because we didn't move and did some other snobbish things once we made it to the tasting room. Let me just make a note, too, that the truck beside of us left before we did without incident. From what I've read, this seems to be an ongoing problem...poor customer service. read more

Very good place. I had expected more for one reason or another. It was very rainy when we went, so maybe when its not rainy it would be a nice place to get a glass of wine and hang out outside on the patios, but I would have liked somewhere inside to enjoy a glass after the tasting. The wines, I was moved by one white, and one red. They have a 2008 Viognier, and it was one of the best I've had in the state (and I've had a lot). Viognier grows so great here, and it always has such a beautiful, fragrant smell of flowers, honey, and other sweet smelling things. The problem with a lot of them is there is this lingering background smell and taste of sulfur so often, and that's started to become a pet peeve of mine. Their Viognier is not as powerful or as full tasting, but it is well-balanced and for that, and for not having the sulfur smell, its a big winner for me. They also have a Meritage that is very good. The Bordeaux style blend is on par with some of the best in the state, and I'm looking forward to drinking that soon. All in all, its a quality outfit... they make good reds and good whites, one of each that I took home with me, if a place can make me happy on both sides of the aisle, then there should be something for everyone. read more

They have a really beautiful picnic area, and hence I had a great time having a picnic lunch with a bottle of their wine. I had a great tasting experience here - of the 6 or so wineries that I visited around Charlottesville, the wines here were most consistent. We were the only tasters (at 10:30 on a Sunday), so we did not have to deal with any loud and obnoxious groups. The Pinot Gris was delightful - both the 2008, which was available for purchase, and the 2009 which we tasted, but is still not ready for tasting. Jefferson Vineyards is a wonderful gem in Charlottesville. For $12 per person, the tasting is a steal in my opinion. The employee assisting us with our tasting was very friendly and knowledgeable about the wine. He also gave us some great restaurant recommendations, as well. All in all, Jefferson has some of the best wines in the area. In particular, their Cabernet Franc is one of my favorites. I came here after touring Monticello and Ash Lawn, as it is conveniently located between the two attractions. It is unfortunate there are no seats at the tasting bar so you cannot relax. We had to wait approx. 20 minutes for the current tasting to finish before we started our tasting which was a bit long to wait. There were three staff members but only one pouring the wines so it was a long process. On to the wine....the Chardonnay Reserve was impressive and did not have the typical buttery aftertaste of CA Chardonnays (which I do not like). The Cab Franc had the most richness and complexity of the reds so we bought a bottle of that also. I found the rest of the reds to be weak and was not a fan. The Riesling was disappointing as it was not very sweet. The bottles we chose were $24 and $25 which is a bit high for Virginia wine, but it's a one time splurge. Barboursville has better wines for cheaper prices. read more

Conveniently close by, solid wines, free tasting glass--all in all not a bad experience! The tasting room feels rather crowded since it's a smaller space, and they have a bit of a patio where you can sit out to enjoy a glass but it doesn't have the same views as some of the other vineyards around town. My friend and I were a little put out by the woman running the register; she really didn't seem like she wanted to be there and acted a bit exasperated through the whole encounter, but that being said, the service was great once we actually got to the pourer. Our pourer enjoyed talking about the wines and history of the vineyard and was happy to answer all of our questions. The tasting was $10 and covered a reasonable number of wines. They were all pretty good but none of them wowed us. Jefferson Vineyards is a classic stop for wine tasting on the Monticello Trail for UVa students and families, and the souvenir glass is pretty fun. Fun if you're doing multiple stops at different wineries around Charlottesville (and Salt is right across the street if you want to stop for lunch)! read more

In addition to wine and a great local selection of cheeses you can bring your dog and sit outside and have a picnic. Up the road is Salt Cafe and they sell sandwiches perfect for a relaxing afternoon here. The wines are well balanced and can stand on their own. We ended up purchasing a selection of white and reds. Cute little wine vineyard a few minutes away from Carter Mountain Orchard. They have a nice little sitting area with a good scenic view. My husband and I have visited quite a few vineyards and wineries in the past several months and this was by far our favorite. Unlike some other places we have visited, this vineyard's exceptional wine is made on site with grapes grown on the property. The helpful staff directed us to a great sandwich shop just across the street for lunch and was knowledgeable in selecting the best wine to accompany our delightful tarragon chicken salad sandwiches (a Riesling 2019 with a Semi-Sweet Rose 2018 for dessert). The setting is amazing (mountain views accompanied by the soft mooing of nearby cows) and we felt extremely safe due to the COVID precautionary measures. We will definitely visit again! read more

The first stop in a wine and beer tour. I was pleasantly surprised by a reserve red wine tasting. I also sampled a few of their staple wines as well. I'm big on red's and they came through with some full bodied deep reds and some lighter toned reds in their standard collection. I would've enjoyed some nicer pours to get better tasting notes as 1oz sample is pretty lame especially for some of the more complex reserve wines. The grounds are nice and tasting rooms are pretty decent, but getting some better pours and more staff would bump Jefferson up to four stars quickly. read more

The wine was excellent! Especially for someone who prefers dries like myself. This vineyard uses 100% VA grapes (65% from their own estate). The young lady who did my tasting was very helpful and knowledgeable. The grounds are also beautiful. I highly recommend making a stop here - would be nice after a trip to Monticello. The price per bottle ranges from $16 to $50 - which is not bad. You also get to keep a signature glass with your tastings fee of $10, and they allow you taste as many times as you would like. Stopped by here earlier this week after visiting Blenheim. It was $10 for a tasting, and the wine was ok. I got a glass of the Viognier afterwards, and my girlfriend got a glass of the Chardonnay. The ambiance inside was pretty cool (they have a wall of colored bottles, which gives a rainbow-effect when the sunlight streams through), but I wasn't blown away. We sat outside, which was peaceful, but as I've previously mentioned about these wineries around Monticello, I think it's worth the trip to the Afton Mountain area and/or 29N. read more

Jefferson Vineyards is one of the first Virginia wineries I visited, back when VA only had about 50 wineries (waaay back in 2001 or so....) Their wines are found in many stores in the state, including some Giants and Safeways. Their reserve Chardonnay, in the special "script" bottle, is the best thing on their menu, albeit pricey (about $22 on last visit). They also make a Meritage - a member of that exclusive "Meritage" club. I find many of their wines to be a little overpriced, which is becoming an unfortunate trend in Virginia. But their wines are all good, and it is the closest spot to Monticello. Try their wines, get a glass, linger and then visit either nearby First Colony or Burnley, for better prices, equal (and in some cases superior) wine, and a less "touristy" vibe. read more

Views are good and it was relaxing to sit under a tree and enjoy wine. The reason I am giving 3 stars is that this is a small vineyard and you can definitely find bigger and better in this area. I would go to Veritas or Afton anyday over this. But if you just care about wine and not the views and seating, then this is a good place. read more

I visited here on a Monday and was surprised at the number of in and out visitors that arrived in the half hour or so that I was there. Because of the flow of traffic, you really have to just catch some luck on when a tasting is beginning or you will otherwise be waiting as the tastings have no schedule on which they run. During this time, you can peruse the thin shop for their collectibles. Admittedly, the gentleman that did our tasting had reason to be a bit burnt out for doing tasting after tasting, day in and out for several years, but it really took away from the atmosphere or appeal of the tasting. The tasting was rushed and had little difference than having the hot words read off the label to us. The tasting was quite reasonable in price though. You get 1oz of ten different wines and get to keep the Riedel glass that you use for the samples. The wines themselves left a bit to be desired, too. The Reserve Chardonnay was decent but very new world style with a hint of vanilla at the end. The other whites had a lot of work to do as they were all stainless steel tanks and not much was developed in the fermentation process. As for the red, the meritage was nice and the Petit Verdot was a pleasant surprise, but even then, all the wines were still very young. None were older than 2 years. Finally, the two dessert styled wines were okay-ish. The Vin de Trois was the better of the two, but still was similar to a watery Eiswein. A nice experience for something to do if you have never done a wine tasting at the vintner before, but not a ton of personality and needed some aging on the wines to appeal to more discerning palates. read more

This was a good little spot to taste wine. We came here after visiting the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. At first we were a bit nervous about not finding parking as there was very few spaces and some people had parked badly. But we were able to squeeze in. We followed the signs for the tasting room and bought our tasting passes. The cashier notified us that we could wait for a space to open up at the bar and we would know that a group was close to ending their tasting by a blue wine bottle placed in front of them. While waiting for a blue bottled group to finish, a lady came up to us and whispered that there was a second tasting room across the way and to see Stone as he does the best tastings. We promptly left and were amazed to see that there was an open spot at the bar and it happened to be Stone's spot. We tried whites and reds. My favorite was the Pinot Gris and Vignioner. I preferred the whites over the reds. My husband loved the red Saviognon Franc. And like the lady whispered, Stone did not disappoint and was very engaging to all that he was servicing. After the tasting we returned to the main tasting room to purchase the Pinot Gris. We will return to Jefferson Vineyards later this year probably with family or friends so they can share in the great experience we had. read more

I have heard rave reviews about Jefferson Vineyards from a few friends and had high expectations going into our visit, especially since it was a bit of a drive out of the way at the end of a long day. While there was nothing absolutely terrible about our visit, there was nothing that wowed me either. Considering the fact that I visited several other vineyards in the area and saw much of the stiff competition the same weekend, I was even more let down. The gentleman conducting our tasting was very passionate about his job, unfortunately the wine he was pouring wasn't anything to get excited about. Furthermore, I thought the prices were above the quality. While the location itself is beautiful and possibly worth a one time visit or an afternoon picnic, the wine itself is not memorable considering what's available within close proximity. I also don't mind that the tasting room is incredibly small, but it definitely plays into the overall underwhelm of the vineyard. read more
