A Masterclass in Deception. Do Not Be Fooled by the 4.5 Stars My wife and I came here expecting a special dinner based on glowing reviews. What we got was a textbook tourist trap with a view. Yes, the setting is gorgeous. Vermont mountains in the distance, open-air ambiance, cozy lighting. But once the food hits the table, the charm dies fast. I ordered the grilled chicken. What arrived was three thin slices of poultry on a puddle of sauce, garnished with a few microgreens. It looked more like a sample than a $44 entrée. My wife's "Gnudi" was overpowered by a bitter green sauce, rubbery in texture, and she couldn't finish it. I ended up eating both meals just to feel like I had dinner, but left still hungry. We ended up grabbing pizza afterward because we felt completely ripped off. The bill? $80 before tip. For what amounts to two appetizers. No drinks, no dessert, no extras. To add insult to injury: they charge you $25 per person if you cancel a reservation. That should have been our first red flag. This restaurant survives off its view and inflated reputation. The food is nowhere near the quality or portion size you'd expect at this price point. The 4.5-star rating is wildly misleading and risks conning more travelers like us. We left upset, unsatisfied, and shocked that this place gets away with calling itself fine dining. Save your money and your evening. Go somewhere that cares more about the plate than the patio. read more

Amazing ambiance even when eating at the bar. Amazing top level craft cocktails. The lobster hand rolls and crispy rice tuna apps were sublime. Roasted beet salad top notch. And the desserts were fine dining quality, very elevated. 4.8 S T A R S The Restaurant (or Dining Room) at Edson Hill is the type of restaurant where you are 100% happy and actually feel so good to pay every single penny for the meal, the service and the ambiance. I will call it the Edson Hill "experience." Found ever so randomly through a Google search (and really just booked for Christmas dinner--whatever restaurant we could find!), we ended up actually going the following day, for an early dinner, as our last dinner out in Stowe. The 2.6 mile drive down the local, rural road off (Mountain) the main road is what can only be described as a combination of spooky yet mildly thrilling. There was no snow on the ground, but even with blacktop conditions, the road can seem slightly treacherous to some. There were lights of beautiful, big houses in the woodsy distance, but by and large, it is a dark drive at night. So there's that. (I do think that it's probably a very beautiful drive on a beautiful sunny late spring or summer day.) We finally arrive and park in the parking lot. The establishment (much what seemed like all buildings in Stowe are around the holidays) was decked out and lit up beautifully on the outside. The main entrance was not all that conspicuous looking but we opened it and were immediately greeted by a nice man who showed us towards the hostess area. The two hostesses were very friendly, took our coats and showed us to our table. We passed through this incredibly cozy living room space, where what I could assume a guest at the Edson Hill house was relaxing by the fireplace with a book and glass of wine. We stepped into the beautifully decorated Winter Dining Area / Room, where we were the first ones to be seated. It felt like it was our very own private gorgeous space! I absolutely loved the decor and the ambiance was so inviting, cozy yet stylistic in a rustic-chic Vermont way. Margot was our waitress and she was so kind and friendly, helpful along the way with recommendations and eager to answer any questions we had. She also gave us some recommendations for some last minute local Vermont gifts and goodies (think cheese, chocolate, jams, pickles, spicy sauces and of course, MAPLE SYRUP). We ordered 2 non-alcoholic beverages which were delicious and refreshing. Everything at Edson Hill is also locally sourced, as you can see at the bottom of their menu. We had the cheese board - the pickles and pickled carrots paired perfectly with the 4 different cheese we had. The fresh bread was a big hit too, brought out literally seconds before from the oven. The swordfish was so delicious and we also shared the arugula-beet salad. My only slight complaint with my salad was that it was supposed to have candied pecans, which in my opinion, really make the salad extraordinary. There were only about 3 pecans in total. So that was a bummer. We also had hoped the desert that Margot had sold us on would have been a little bit better than it actually was, though it wasn't horrible or anything. 9/10 recommend for an exquisite place! If you can stay here too, I'm sure that is just as divine as the dining experience. Will be returning for sure once back in beautiful Stowe, VT. read more

I tried to like this place. Service was okay. I'm giving 3 stars for the view. It's incredible. The drinks were okay at best. I got jalapeño infused spicy marg. It's too spicy, you can't feel anything after and you should at some point. But the food. It's just not good at all. We got an apricot salad, watermelon and watercress salad, and octopus for starters. The octopus was not seasoned, overcooked, along with citrus crème fraiche that was not salted and didn't have taste at all. Salads were ok at most. Fried chicken as a main dish was nothing extraordinary. Just fried chicken. I wouldn't go back for dinner, that's why I canceled my second reservation, but you can't beat the view. read more

The view and ambiance is the only thing this restaurant has going for itself. The two female hostesses could not have been ruder, rolled their eyes at us and other guests multiple times. Bartender couldn't have been more dismissive and clearly miserable to be there and the food was absolutely horrible. We paid Boston / NYC prices for overcooked cold flavorless food with a side of sassy service. There is only one entree on the menu under $50. In exchange for the views I have been trying to justify Edson Hill's restaurant prices, mediocre food and service for years but after my latest experience I will not be back. read more

My husband and I had a delicious dinner at the restaurant at edson hill this past February. The main dining room is upscale, but cozy. The service was attentive, but not overbearing. The food was the star. Everything was so good, not a drop was left on our plates. Highlights were the winter salad and the cheesecake (amazing!). We also had the squash tempura, steak and short ribs. The driveway to access the restaurant isn't for the feint of heart - make sure you take the right car! We went once in mud season and got stuck in a rut. But plan accordingly and you'll have a delightful evening full of good food. read more

I made the reservation as soon as they opened and followed up with a call to the restaurant to request a specific table for my wife's and my anniversary -- we were not given that table and we were seated so close to the other table that we could not help but be a part of their conversations despite both couples talking in hushed tones. It took our server a very long time to take our cocktails order and then an even longer time to deliver them (which she blamed on the bar tender). When we ordered a bottle of wine, she returned 10 minutes later with the wine list and said they were out of it. After trying to figure out a replacement wine then 5 minutes later the wine we had originally ordered magically appeared (and the bar tender was blamed for not restocking). My lamb was good but while very nicely flavored half of my wife's scallops were full of grit. We shared the sticky toffee pudding and asked for a couple glasses of Amaretto to go with desert. The sticky toffee pudding was ice cold and the Amaretto came out 5 minutes after we finished the dessert -- this was blamed on the hostess who delivered the dessert. When paying $300+ for a meal, the food and service should be spot-on and if there is a service hiccup I'd much rather hear an apology than a blame game. Thus, after four previous enjoyable visits I'm afraid that this fifth will likely be our final as all of the issues significantly detracted from what should have been a relaxed, celebratory experience. read more

What an exceptional experience at Edson Hill! With at least 2 weeks advance notice, Edson Hill was able to accomodate us vegans. And wow, did they blow us away! Edson Hill arranged a pre fixe menu for us. - The Brussel Sprouts cooked to perfection, savory, smoky, hint of sweetness, and nutty from the pignoli dukkah and salt. - The Arugula and Beet Salad was so fresh, a beautiful balance of spiciness from the arugula, earthy sweetness from the beets, and sweetness candied pecans, and brightness from the dressing. - The Fig & Radicchio Salad was one of my favorites and what I will be dreaming about! Savory and smoky from the radicchio, subtle sweetness from the figs, varied textured with candied pistachios, and Chef Dylan's take on a vegan burrata... chef's kiss! - The Maple Soy Glazed Foraged Mushroom Pate was sourced from foraged mushrooms on the property (And Chef Dylan's mushroom guy is vegan!). What a treat! The broth was so umami and delicious! The pate wrapped in napa cabbage was so beautiful and a nice hint of sweetness from the maple and yams. - The Peach Streusel was a lovely finish, nice balance of tart, sweet, and richness. A sincere and serious thank you to Chef Dylan who's vegan cooking blew us away and could feel his passion in making exceptional dishes and experiences, Lei who helped coordinate our reservation and correspondence and the entire Edson Hill staff who made our experience so memorable. It far exceeded our expectations on service, the food, and I cannot thank you enough! We come to Stowe every year and will definitely be back if you will take us! First of all let me mention that this drive is not for the faint of heart at night. I drove with my boyfriend in the pitch black up into what we assumed was the mountains based on the steady incline. You can see nothing and it's quite a dangerous drive. Additionally, we arrived at the creepiest looking large barn shed, something out of a horror movie, when the driving app mentioned that we had reached our destination. We found ourselves saying, "Well, this might be then end" in a joking manner. When we arrived they took our coats and we were seated rather quickly, however the dining room in incredibly cramped and we were seated UNCOMFORTABLY close to another couple. We were so close to the other table there was no room for me to squeeze in between the tables. And we were also cramped by the tufted bench that was filled to the brim with so many pillows that we debated putting some on the floor. The service was pretty good and drinks came relatively quickly. For the Manhattan ordered, there was no clear ice cube in the Manhattan only a clunky unfiltered looking ice chunk. The balance was good, it was on the sweeter side, but did not have that high quality feel for $22 dollars and was also not served in a rocks glass 3/5 Rosemary rush I advise to avoid at all cost! It taste like straight lime juice with a sprig of rosemary and was just all around awful. Does not taste like grapefruit at all 0/5 The bread came out warm, but did not have any seasoning whatsoever. It's almost like they forgot to season the dough. It came with a side of olive oil... plane unseasoned olive oil. There was no seasoning in this as well, like is typically done at some Italian restaurants. This I completely didn't understand AT ALL. Unappetizing and just off putting and completely gross. They would be better off with a seasoned butter of some sort or a compound butter. The scallops were well done. Perfectly cooked and really well balanced with both acid and fat with the apple cider and butter. Spaghetti squash could have been salted, but the other flavors from the other elements came together to provide the squash with some nice flavor, could it have been elevated? Yes. Would I order again probably yes. 4/5 The steak frites were pretty good. I would give the fries a 5/5, the steak a 4/5 as it was cooked perfectly, but was under seasoned and the sauce was, interesting. I would not recommend the sauce for the fries, but it was nice for dipping the steak. The desert was a seasonal fruit cobbler that was not that great in my opinion. It was Luke-warm and came with a very skimpy scoop of Ice cream, not nearly enough to finish with the desert. Overall it was not unpleasant, but will we make the drive to eat here again for the price, probably not. Possibly the best restaurant in Stowe. Everything on the menu is sophisticated and top notch quality. If you are a fan of Hen of the Wood their menu offers a similar level of quality. The atmosphere is a beautiful blend of Scandinavian cozy design meets Classic Vermont. One of the most well designed interior spaces in the state. A must go place in Stowe. We were seated in the tavern, which was a more comfortable and less stuffy atmosphere which we appreciated given we went with kids. Ordered the duck pate and octopus for apps, both were amazing and shareable. For mains, the scallops and pork belly were stellar. Such an unexpected combo that's surprisingly worked very well. The osso bucco was heartwarming. The desserts were also really good. This is such a cute cozy spot off the main road with outstanding food. Definitely recommend a visit if you're in stowe. read more

Last Friday night of October we booked a 5pm reservation for 2 people in the Dining Room only based on online reviews. A long-time visitor to Stowe, I'd never even heard of this place. We had a great experience, broken down as follows AMBIENCE: Apparently two Boston-based interior designers are part owner of this inn/restaurant & that explains why it's such a fabulous interior. The lighting, the music playing (nod to 80s tunes), the "feel" was fabulous. Loved that they had the dining room abutting a living room with roaring fireplace; we stopped to play a game of chess by the fire before heading back to our hotel. STAFF: We found the staff to be personable, attentive, and kind. We did not feel rushed, though admittedly at 5PM the reservation was nearly empty when we arrived & almost full when we left by 630. One piece of advice: When the server heard that we didn't like her recommendation on the appetizer, I am *ALWAYS surprised when they aren't trained to say "I'll take your input to the kitchen." and think for the prices they charge, it wouldn't kill them to say - either - we are removing this from your bill *or* a dessert is on us. Honestly, you are missing it by not coaching your staff around a sense of accountability & care. FOOD: Uneven - but overalll so great I gave it 5 stars & would return. Appetizers BRUSSELS SPROUT Appetizer: Nothing super original but incredibly flavorful & well-prepared. Foodie 10 out of 10 PUMPKIN SOUP: Absolutely delicious & Foodie 10 out of 10. Exceedingly small portion. Barely a cup. APPLE & BEET GALETTE: Boo! Big disappointment. you could not taste the rosemary in the crust as server suggested, it was almost soggy, and my suspicion is this was not prepared freshly & was sitting in the fridge. Also the balance of flavors was wrong. I'd say Foodie 2 out of 10 and neither of us even wanted to refrigerate it. - Meals - PORK CHOPS: Flavorful, juicy Foodie 10 out of 10 STEAK FRITES: Exactly what you would expect, Foodie 10 out of 10 - DESSERT - Apple Crumble. This was the absolute best food we had on our trip. We had the squash and goat cheese lasagna as well as the venison. Both were absolutely unbelievably good. The drinks were also lovely. I am pregnant, and appreciated that they had several delicious non alcoholic cocktails to choose from. read more
