Review #26 for 2018. I liked Jesse's a lot! A friend picked me up from the airport the other day, and I was craving Filipino food for an early dinner. He suggested Jesse's, and I'm really happy that he did. Jesse's is located in a strip mall on North King Street at the corner of Kapalama canal. It has a shared parking lot with the other shops, including a hair salon next door. It's a sizable hole in the wall that could both be easily missed, but could host a small family party too. The food was great! My friend and I both got mixed plates, which included three choices. I got pinakbet, pork guisantes, and pancit. I love the eggplant and bittermelon in the pinakbet, but I was missing the okra. Everybody makes their pinakbet slightly different. The pork guisantes and pancit were good too. No complaints! We also ordered a plate of lechon to share, and it was so good! The fried pieces of pork belly were crispy and soft. Some places have lechon that's been sitting out all day and will crack your teeth, but not here. Delicious! The aunty that served us was very nice, though she was pretty busy. I think she was the only one working the front of the restaurant. As I went to pay, I saw all the amazing baked goods, so I grabbed a bag of ensaymada to go, and I've been enjoying it at home since. read more

We recently came here last week while we was in the area and craving Filipino food. It's not the same as I remembered when I was a kid. The food wasn't tasty and super oily! The biggest disappointment was the balatong. It had to be the nastiest I've ever seen and tasted. It had about 2 inches of oil floating at the top of the container. GROSS! It literally was a oily soupy balatong. I do not recommend that. The chicken adobo isn't adobo. Like why is it red? Wouldn't recommend that either. My husband got the plate which was a combination of different dishes and it just wasn't good. All that food with a small scoop of rice, food portion was off. When we asked if we can order more rice after seeing a small scoop, they said they don't have any and we would have to wait 15-20 minutes for rice. I wanted to check out this Filipino restaurant/bakery as I was in the area. I've passed by this restaurant many times. I do like their pastries as sold in the grocery stores so I wanted to check it out as maybe it would be cheaper there. Also, after my bad experience at San Nicolas (fatty/greasy food and even a rip off) I wanted to find other options. First of all, the prices for their pastry here is not comparable to a Loves Thrift Store or an outlet type store. I've actually found them at the same price or cheaper at Don Quijote that sell their products. The plate lunch I ordered was reasonably priced at $11 for two choices and two scoops white rice. I would have liked something else instead of another scoop of rice. Even a Filipino take on macaroni salad or even potato salad would have been great. Better yet, they should have offered pancit or pancit bihon in addition to the rice. The selection of sides was very limited consisting of pork intestine delicacy (not my cup of tea), blood pork (typically in almost all Filipino restaurants, Filipino vegetable stew, pork guisantes and some dish I could not make out. They really should put a label on each dish. As far as the food, the pork guisantes had animal fat but not as much as at San Nicolas. The dish itself tasted like it was sitting in the tray for hours (I arrived after 6 pm). The meat was getting to that point where it was not as tender as it should be. But it was still better than San Nicolas' version. Had it been fresh it would have been much better. The squid stew was kind of hard (probably from having sat in the hot tray for quite some time) but at least you get more than if you had ordered it at San Nicolas so that was a plus. I've had better but still better than San Nicolas. The cashier was nice unlike at San Nicolas where you felt like you were an inconvenience. So that's a plus. The parking was not hard to find, too. All in all, this is a decent place for Filipino food and the price was definitely reasonable. The food itself was not great but still better than San Nicolas. I would suggest you come here earlier in the day to get the food as fresh as possible. I guess my search for a place to get my fix on this cuisine continues. read more

The area is kinda sketchy especially during night so we come here for breakfast. They have a pretty good selection on their menu for Filipino food but I'm a bit hesitant to try just because I like my dishes cooked a certain way or my moms way. Yes, I'm being bias lol though I can say this is a spot we go to for breakfast when I'm lazy to cook my own. My usual order is the longonisa (Filipino sausage), fried rice and over easy egg dish. They serve the vinegar longonisa and not the sweet one. Fried rice is awesome when you bomb it with their vinegar sauce. I order the torta, longonisa and fried rice today. Their eggplant torta can be worked on a little but I'm not sure if that is just the way they prepare it. It was pretty plain to me. In fact, it just look like a roasted eggplant stripped off the skin and served it. No egg whatsoever (see pic) the rice was kinda mushy - kinda gross. Boyfriend got the adobo fried rice; he said it hit the spot but we honestly think Julie's in kapolei or Rocky's do it wayyy better. This is my favorite place to eat Filipino food and pastries. Today we ordered Lauya baka, Pork guisantis and Pancit canton. The lauya was perfectly cooked, meat falls off the bone and with cabbage. The guisantis was also very good, you could just taste a hint of vinegar with the pork so tender with just enough peas. The banana lumpia was golden brown, fresh and still piping hot after we ate the other items, the bananas was ripe and sweet. And it comes with free rice. Overall, the service was fast and efficient, we got our food within 10 minutes. On our way out we got some hot pandesal and balintawak. Definitely coming here again to eat the delicious grinds and pastries. read more

I was so disappointed with our food this evening. We have been going here for years to eat and today my husband ordered takeout and brought it home for dinner. We opened up our sari sari and the first thing I saw was a bug floating around. So I tossed it out thinking it was just that one and just figured we'd eat the other things we bought. I opened the other dishes and what do I find? More bugs, little fruit flies! I immediately called the restaurant and notified them about what we found. They were very sassy and didn't seem like they believed us. They asked me to drive back with all the food to show them and only then would they give us a refund. Unbelievable. We live in Kaneohe and travel to Kalihi because we love their food. It's just such a shame that their cleanliness and customer service is not very good. I didn't get to enjoy Nana's or Tita's home cooking while growing up and I am not of Filipino descent, but I have been blessed with amazing friends and coworkers who have opened my eyes (and palate) to the joy of Filipino cuisine (and Filipino breakfast). And now, many of my friends and coworkers consider me an honorary Filipino, as have come to enjoy some of the more exotic Filipino dishes including dinuguan, sisig, kilawin/kinilaw na hipon, etc. Anyway, there's something special about Nana's cooking and it can't be fudged. Maybe it's that perfectly seasoned cast iron pan from the years of polymerized oil buildup. Or the fact that I'm not laboring over the food. Or the love and time she puts into the cooking. It's probably a number of things. Whatever it is, it's great. And there's nothing like a home cooked Filipino meal, especially a Filipino breakfast. At Jesse's, I get just that - a delicious and simple home-style breakfast, cooked just how Nana would make it. TORTA EGGPLANT W/ LONGANISA OR TINAPA (fried fish) AKA Tortang Talong In layman's terms, it's basically a grilled eggplant omelet. But this isn't just any old eggplant omelet. (If they don't give you suka / vinegar, ask for it. I like my torta with some suka and a dash of Tabasco.) Longanisa is a must, but the tinapa is also good. If you want both, you can add on a side order of either (or if they're extra nice they may include a little of both). And don't forget that vinegar. It's a must with that longanisa. For real. It's so good. Also comes with your choice of white rice, pandesal, or fried rice (additional charge). I'd go with the fried rice AKA garlic rice because it is the best (IMO). JESSE'S LONGANISA BREAKFAST Comes with 3 longanisa, two eggs any style, and your choice of white rice or pandesal or fried rice (+$1.25 extra) Don't forget about the vinegar (suka)! Really though, that vinegar is life. It goes well with so many dishes (and not just breakfast). And garlic rice for the win! Also, I usually like to add on a side order of longanisa because I really just can't get enough. So I think I made it pretty clear - I love my longanisa and eggs. WATCH THE TIME Breakfast stops at 10AM, so be mindful of the time. If you aren't going to make it to Jesse's by 10AM, call in your order to eat there or pick it up. I've done this before and they were very accommodating: I called to let them know that we wouldn't make it by 10AM and they kindly offered to put in our order to the kitchen just before 10AM (before the kitchen shuts down breakfast). They even kept it warm for us, too. SERVICE Generally they're all very nice. Sometimes they're busy or MIA, but they eventually come around. And the food comes out pretty quickly so we've never really had to wait very long. INTERIOR Not the most glamorous place, but it works. And, uhh, they have ample seating and tables... VERDICT I have been enjoying breakfast at Jesse's for a while now and I hope to continue. Another Filipino restaurant spot that I like to visit while I'm on the island. The Filipino dishes are average on my books, like today we ordered the fried silit because it's been a while we ate it. Another order we always come here for is the pianomo rolls which is always my favorite. Customer service is a plus because they ladies treat you like their own which makes you feel like family. They are located in the heart of Kalihi on North King Street across from 7-eleven. The best thing about this place is it's not only a bakery but you can order entrees. Sorry to say I called early this morning to place my order. I wanted vegetable lumpia, pancit, chicken adobo and pan de sel. Pancit, ok. Ran out of vegetable lumpia and they don't make chicken adobo anymore??? Uhm, that should have been a red flag for me. I went to pick up my order on the dot. Two ladies behind the counter helping one lady but talking all kinds of stories. I'm in a hurry, please, I have to get back to work. Then I excuse myself to ask one lady if my take out order is ready. She tells me it is but not been placed in a take out box!! This was over an hour ago that I placed my order. Anyhow, I waited as she went in the back and slowly did everything. Placed my buns in a bag and I paid. I got my pancit at my desk and it's horrid. Worst taste ever. Not only did they not put vinegar on the side nor lemon. The taste is old and absolutely no flavors. I think you might want to just open up as a bakery. The food is not desirable, the place is filthy and the people are so slow. If you are in a rush, this is not the place to be at! Wish I could give you more stars but I can't. I'm from Waipahu where there are many delicious filipino restaurants! I happened to be in Kalihi doing errands with my grandparents and daughter. I remember coming here from when I was very young and remembered it to be a place to enjoy authentic Filipino food with the whole family but today ruined it for me. First of all, we weren't even greeted. I had to find a table for us then nobody came to check on us so I went up to the counter and asked if they were still serving. Aunty up front said "just have a seat and I'll take your order". So we waited for another 5 minutes until she came. She brought us water with no straws. After placing my order, I asked for the vinegar with chili and with an attitude she replied "it already comes with your order!". We waited for about 25 minutes for our food. (No exaggerating) Mind you, we were the ONLY party there. When the food finally came, I was happy to know their fried silet tasted the same as I had remembered. The pancit bihon was okay, but very little bit of meat. Balatong was okay, not the greatest. And the shrimp sarciado was a thumbs up (per my 4-year-old). The food made us feel better and a lot more welcomed. When we were wrapping up, I noticed no one even came to check on us or refilled our cups of water. Again, I had to go up to the counter and ask for the check and containers to go. She rang me up and when I asked for the receipt, she sighed and put it down on the counter. The checked my bill and noticed I was charged 2.75 for a small drink of orange juice and then another extra $2.00. I stopped her to ask what the extra charge was and OMFG i was charged per container! I don't know of much places that charge for containers and on top of that has the nerves to give their customers attitude about it! do not go in and buy their banana lumpia. i went in this morning to get they're 6 banana lumpia for $4.99, and let me just sayyy that it was the worst decision i made today. they fried the banana lumpia in their old frying oil that they fried their pork, chicken and fish in it. i could tell by the fishy smell, and old frying oil. i then show it to another filipino lady that sells banana lumpia at the dilingham market, and she assured me that, this restraunt is using their old old frying oil that they use for frying fish, pork, and chicken. pls do not make the same mistake as i did today. stay away from this cheap place read more

We came here to get some take out for dinner. We were having dinner with my uncle at the rehab place he was at as he was recouperating from his surgery. We ordered lots of food on this night because there was a handful of us. Restaurant: it has a hole in the wall feel for me. It was spacious as well. They have baked goods and you can order hot food as well. Food: we ordered 4 orders of lechon kawali, 1 pork gisantes, shrimp mungo beans, and a combo mixed plate. These all come with rice. Everything was delicious and the service was very generous. The shrimp mungo beans was my favorite! It was cooked just right. We also bought the coconut pandesal bread for my tutu. I ate that when I got home - SO ONO! My tutu loves it too! Customer Service: they we super nice, helpful and patient! This was me and my boyfriend's first time there so we weren't sure what we wanted. Because we were ordering a lot and all unsure of what we were getting, we took a while and asked a lot to questions. If you've been here a lot then you will know how this place is... The first time i have ever eaten here i thought the service was terrible. It took awhile to get sat down, it took a while to get waters, it took awhile to even get menus. Even getting refills on water was so hard. But there was one good thing about Jesses and it was the food!!! Now that I have been eating here for a quite awhile, i kind of just seat myself, grab my own menu, i dont expect my water because they do have a drink cooler to the side of the restaurant where i help myself out to a drink if im thirsty (yes, you have to pay) sometimes, if i have been waiting awhile to order, i kind of go to the register and order my food there. Im really laid back when it comes to things, and i do understand that the workers there are really busy, and do have a lot on their mind so thats why im not going to say this place is terrible because of the service. You just have to understand!! But i really love the food here, a lot of other filipino restaurants do their dishes differently and I haved tried different ways of one dish but I will always like the food here. As much as I want to love this place for its simplicity, it will have to be at a later time. This place is known for its filipino food and the bakery is good too. I recently have discovered this place after playing tourist Yelp on North King Street, after discovering Toshi's Delicatessen and Diner's Drive Inn on consecutive weeks. Jesse's Bakery was really no different. Really, this place is a hole in the wall restaurant and you would have to come here just to find this place, otherwise, you would miss it entirely. There is a private lot or street parking. Or find street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. As I reviewed the reviews before coming to this place, I felt like I got a good smattering of information before coming here. They are spot on with this place, but I kept an open mind for good service and a pleasant atmosphere. I ultimately decided not to attempt the filipino food, but get something from the bakery side, just because I was in a rush to get back to the office. The bakery side reminds me of a wiki wiki Zippy's / Napoleon's Bakery style operation. The prices were reasonable, so I will like to come back more often just to gander at a taste of this hole in the wall bakery. While I would like to taste more of the filipno fare, maybe I will come back for that too, but for now, it was a pretty good experience. The service was slower than I thought, but I guess everyone was at the dinning area when I was there. Prices were decently cheap for the most part, but I can't really fathom paying $10 for a dish, when the experience is less than expected. The saving grace here was that the bakery items I did order was good and fresh. Fresh is good and fun to eat. You might want to come here in the early morning before going to work. It's always a treat to get something fresh from the bakery in the morning. That normally sets the tone for the day. I already have my favorite bakeries around Honolulu, so Jesse's Bakery would need more visitations to satisfy my cravings. The sugggestion by Berneta A. not to come here and park near the Kapalama canal is much needed. I never thought of the homeless population was that big in and around North King Street area. Overall, I would recommend this place just to try. Needless to say that I would need to come back to try the filipino fare just to say I have tried it. CALL YOUR ORDERS IN OR EXPECT TO WAIT EVEN LONGER THAN USUAL AND BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR TAKE OUT ORDERS BEFORE YOU LEAVE! I was here less than a week ago and had decent service. My boyfriend and I had cravings all week for that shrimp sarciado since it's always been a favorite filipino dish growing up. So we anticipated to just get a take out one of these days and enjoy it at home. We placed an order around 6:20 pm on a Tuesday Night for shrimp sarciado and fried pork. 15 min later, still no food ready yet, another 15 min pass by and the food is still not ready. Note that the restaurant side was not even busy for them to be taking that long to cook food. At this point we were just about to walk out but gave them another 10 min because we've waited that long so we might as well just stay for it since we were trying to satisfy our cravings especially for the shrimp sarciado. Time seems to fly by slower when you're hungry, tired, and annoyed for waiting that long for simple food items to be cooked. Finally almost 45 mins later our take out was ready. Still can't believe how long that took to even get our order. When we were there last week, I swear it didn't take that long. We may as well just have eaten there, but maybe it was one of those days that we caught the super slow service that majority of yelpers were complaining about. Now I know why and experienced it for myself for the horrible service they provide. No personality, politeness or customer service whatsoever. Like it really makes me think how do they keep in business if all these other people have the same complaint as I do. We finally get home and are about to enjoy our dinner only to find out they gave us the WRONG ORDER for one of our entrees. Instead of shrimp sarciado which was the main reason we went there, we receive some other type of vegetable shrimp dish. Totally just lost my appetite just expecting I was going to enjoy a tasty shrimp sarciado like we specifically ask for with the egg and yet we got a thick vegetable soupy shrimp dish. They were already closing so we weren't about to drive all the way down to complain so we just decided to eat it anyways. It was so soupy and saucy that my taste buds were not having it with that dish. It seems like it was just a tomato vegetable dish with I swear what seems like only no more than 3 pieces of shrimp that I ate within that whole container. I was not satisfied at all. Definitely not worth what we paid for. I've never been so annoyed and disappointed at a restaurant so much as I did going through that experience. I understand why all these other yelpers gave negative reviews because it's true, customer service is not at all priority at this place! If I were you, I'd just go to Max's in Kalihi, you'll get better service and filipino dish choices there. read more

I want to start off with positive comments. The pancit bihon and lumpia were delicious! The 15 minutes wait was worth it. Unfortunately the 3-star rating is because of the poor service. The lady behind the counter was short with me because I asked her what type of pancit they offered. I am a local Filipino who was not taught how to speak tagalog because my parents wanted me to be Americanized. That being said, I am treated a bit differently by native Filipinos. I know what it feels like to be discriminated by people with whom I share the same ethnicity. My hope is that this review will help the owners and staff of this establishment treat everyone that comes in their doors with respect and aloha. Came here straight after getting off the airplane from Los Angeles. I'm always famished for local food when I land in HNL. I like to try new places so my Mom and Dad brought me to Kalihi. We ordered Pork Sari-sari, pusit adobo and one more I can't remember. Food was good and tasty. The adobo could have used a little more vinegar to my liking. The wait staff was interesting. Our waitress looked like she was at her 3rd job and was SUPER tired and cranky. So instead of being cranky at the customers she just kept a stoic zombie like demeanor. I didnt go for the baked goods, but they did smell really good. The fried chicken is what hooked me. We got take out and it was so easy to do. Just call in and let them know what you want and you can come and pick it up. Well anyways the fried chicken is extremely crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. You can eat this plain or with some salt and pepper. I recommend that you eat this with the vinegar that they give you. If it sounds strange you are not alone. I usually go to Jesse's to order my Shanghai Lumpia for my work potlucks. They have amazing customer service. I usually call in my order in the morning before heading to work and they always have my order ready when I get there. I have never had to wait. Sometimes I only give them about 1/2 hour advance notice but it's always ready. So far I've had their Shanghai Lumpia, Bihon Pancit and their UBE rolls. They have all been really good and tasty. Variety of food. Nice and hot since items are in warmer. Good amount of food given in the 1,2 or 3 choice combo. Will go again.
