Way, way back in the early 90's when I was but a starry-eyed teenager growing up on the east coast, I read that Courtney Love shopped here. For some reason I've never forgotten that factoid. Anyway... 3.5 stars. I usually walk out of here with at least one or two reasonably priced gems, and the Sunday sale is always an adventure. A few caveats, though: 1. If you're female and looking for something pre-1960's, look elsewhere. Can't speak for the selection of men's clothes, but the women's section tilts heavily in favor of the late 60's/70's. 2. As has been pointed out, the customer service is terrible. Be prepared to be treated like a potential shoplifter as soon as you walk through the door. 3. The dressing rooms are awful- they're poorly lit and made out of some kind of noisy metal material. So, yeah. Not perfect. But definitely worth a look. read more

WHO WOULDN'T LOVE A DOLLAR PILE SALE?? I have been coming here for years and for the Sunday dollar pile sale... It's always hit and miss on the pile sale. Secret is to get here when they open which is at 10AM.... Wait, I should not be telling you this.... My friend and I came here this Sunday and we arrived shortly after 2PM.. so yeah it was a little slim picking. I found good stuff here.. They have a rack outside which has some jackets on it. I found a leather jacket (a snug waist fitted) jacket with a faux fur collar.. Sounds silly perhaps but you would be jealous if you saw it and jealous if I told you that I got it for $10. So, yeah I dig the pile sale. I spent about $15 on the pile sale. Next Sunday I was told by the guy working outside that they will have 1500 pounds of clothing that they will be dumping on the parking lot.. Yes, I will be back again.... This time bright and early.... Now, Jet Rag on the inside.... MMMMM.... I don't think that they are overly priced. But, I found a lot of cute dresses and tops that had stains on them and they were asking a lot in my opinion for something that is damaged. Seriously.. $16 dollars for a dress that had a huge gnarly stain right in the center of the chest is just lame.. BUT, I still dig it here... I only really go to jet rag for the "Dollar Sundays" when they just lay tarps out over the entire parking lot and dump truckloads of old clothing for just a dollar and yes, on Sunday mornings... Hence the whole thing being called Dollar Sundays =) Now keep in mind though that you won't ALWAYS find stuff that's in perfect shape so some do it yourself work might be needed but for a dollar who can complain? Last time I went was around the summer of '04 with a friend who refused to dig cause he said it was too dusty (well duh... you gotta rummage to find good sh*t y'know?). Anyway, I found 2 old school penguin brand vintage golf shirts and totally freaked out saying, "dude you can't get this for a dollar!!!" and he whined about how it wouldn't fit him and how there was a pinky sized hole in the shoulder so I put the shirt on and he goes, "Oh yeah it looks cool." So he we went one like that until he had about 5 or 6 dollars worth of stuff... And what happens a few weeks later? He tells me,"dude I always get a lot of compliments on those shirts that we got at jet rag for a dollar!" read more

This store is the worst - mostly because of the customer service. The staff don't even greet you, let alone pay any attention to you. One staff member passed by me and didn't even look at me. The clothes are too pricey for what they are. They're not even high-quality like Crossroads and Jet Rag is more expensive than them. Won't come back at all. read more

I am only reviewing for the $1 Jet Rag on Sundays outside the store. Thank god they have tents now so people won't melt in the sun. It looks intimidating at first b/c you don't know where to start or what to do - the piles of clothes are enormous and everything looks gross at first glance. However, the trick is to just jump in. Bring a large bag with you so you don't have lug all the clothes around like I did. I arrived late so I was almost going to give up on the digging, but thank god I didn't! I found a super cute tank top, four awesome dresses, a button up for my man, and a skirt! Upon checking out OPP (other people's piles) I saw a ton of good stuff so I guess that's the main reason I kept at it. Sometimes it's difficult to decipher what is a pile you can sift through and a pile that actually belongs to someone. That's how much stuff people are buying here. But for a $1 who cares! At one point a row of people digging through a pile of clothes started yelling and screaming and picking up as much as they could. All the other customers (including me) looked very confused. A man next to me kept asking "What is it? What's going on? What's happening?" But no one answered him. Next time I'm coming early early! I love $1 Sundays at Jet Rag! Remember, cash only! read more

I feel obligated to hate places like this, but the $1 sale they had on Sunday was pretty cool! I picked up a couple Pendleton flannels (grossly stained with what appeared to be either feces or chocolate, washed out though) and a cool obviously-Japanese made windbreaker that has a bunch of internal pockets and straps that don't really make sense. All for $1 each. The cashier guy outside was playing lots of really good latin funk/lowrider oldies/r&b which made for a nice clothes digging experience. The heat was almost unbearable but you can't really fault Jet Rag for the miserable/wonderful Southern California summers. My experiences inside aren't quite as good however. Expensive thrift store clothes and dumb overpriced costumes for posers. But hey, maybe that's your thing. read more

One of the first thrift stores I ever been to in Hollywood, I was prob about 15 or so at the time and couldnt believe they had a " dollar sunday" sale. I went and was so suprised how hectic it was. This place pretty much throws semi decent clothes in their "parking lot". Its a first come first serve, it gets a bit disgusting going thru piles of clothes that smell like urine. I swear you not its like a bum had a piss party on these clothes. But why am I complaining, its only a dollar. So i found this cute ass green flannel, too cute and totally a score. I went there recently, and OH MY SWEET BABY JESUS the clothes are rediculously ugly. I was so disappointed so I went inside hoping I'd find a deal... boy was I wrong. Its pretty much overpriced. Most of the items look like they came out of the 70's. I know its "vintage" but im pretty sure someone wont wear pr buy some ugly bright flower shirt for $25 dollars. This LA thrift shop is the biggest thrift store I've ever been too! It's 2 floors of just everything you can imagine. And on Sunday's they have this $1 sale outdoors and people just go nuts over random things. I suggest everyone see this once in their life, because honestly I saw it live and was absolutely amused and frightened at the same. People were just grabbing randomly and it's like running of the bulls but with old worn clothes and humans. As for the store itself, it's very well organized. Tshirts are color coordinated and everything is super well kept and clean. It is a more "expensive" thrift store. Tshirts are about $12 and up. I don't think I saw anything less than $10 here. read more

The staples of my wardrobe: 1) Burgundy leather jacket with cute puff sleeves ($35ish) 2) LBD (little black dress) ($16) 3) Vintage 50's style pumps ($12) All extraordinary items and purveyors of compliments and all things that I have found at Jet Rag for pennies!!! Jet rag is one of my reasons for no longer needing nor wanting to shop at department stores anymore unless I am in need of some new lingerie or undies (those items are DEFINITELY things that must be purchased new!!!!!!) Totally reasonable prices falling somewhere between the cost of Goodwill and Target...I don't know if that is a good comparison... ehh well. Also a much better selection of vintage pieces over Buffalo Exchange (which I also love). Parking is in front of store and they only have about 4 parking spots so that can be tricky sometimes. Also they close at 7:30pm on weeknights. They also have a wide selection of tops, coats, jeans, and skirts all organized by color and style (i.e. polyester, western shirts, t-shirts, etc.) Good men's selection too to keep your man busy or shop for him! :) One of a kind items that are way cooler than crap at oooooohhhh say Abercrombie and Fitch. I understand that Jet Rag is a vintage store and not a thrift store but still, the quality of the clothes they sell isn't that great and shouldn't be $30. Thrift stores sell the same items for less. The person at the front isn't that friendly and looks like she hates her job. If you need help, you're on your own. A majority of the items sold are very drag queen-esque and costume-y. If you're willing to dig you might find one cute item decently priced. I've also been to the $1 Sundays and the items out are garbage. read more

Wow the most vintage goods I've seen in one place. This place is so cool, they have EVERYTHING when it comes to vintage. Two floors and everything is hyper organized. The prices vary. In my opinion the prices are fair. I usually thrift shop so I found it to be pricey, but if I were selling vintage this good then I'd probably price it the same. I was actually able to find my wedding dress here and some cool psychedelic vintage tops. They have a great selection of 70's jumpsuits and dresses, too. It's all amazing. Since the prices are so steep I probably won't visit again, but if you're looking for a good vintage shop in LA then this is the one! read more

There are not many places like jet rag. The dollar Sundays are amazing! If you love vintage, clothes and have a good eye then you will love it. I have been going to the dollar sale on Sunday for several years now. Every time I have gone, it gets more and more popular it seems which is great for jet rag but makes finding the clothes and getting what you want a little more difficult. Pretty much 1,000 lbs of clothes wrapped in bundles of 100lbs each, lined up and opened at either one time or two. The guy in charge in crew have a system... Wait till all the bundles are cut open And well once they are cut open... Be ready, it's game on. It becomes chaotic then everyone goes to their areas and looks thru what they have grabbed or go looking around at what people have discarded from their grab or thrown back into the pile. My rule or method: eyes on the piles and look for fabrics. Guard/watch your stuff or things you have collected because people eye it or may accidentally grab it because thought it was not already chosen by you. It's fun but after some time, you get over it and want to check out. It's totally worth it because everything is a dollar and I have come up with some amazing finds and pieces. I love this place and it's totally worth checking out! There is really nothing like it and it's a real gem of a find! read more

I'm giving Jet Rag 5 stars to counter all the low-scoring kooks who claim they know vintage. I've been a vintage buyer and seller since the 80's and JR is at the top of the heap. First, they are HUGE -- how many vintage shops have two levels like they do? This is unique to L.A. The staff is unobtrusive, yet very helpful when asked about anything. The prices are more than reasonable. And if an item is missing a tag, they'll give you a fair price on the spot, no waiting to check with a supervisor. They all are knowledgeable. For a thrift store, I might agree that the pricing is pretty moderate. But lets be honest, their dollar sunday sales are where its really at. It gets a bit intense in the mornings but even when you arrive around noon, theres mostly always something to your liking. Past $ finds include a paper clip printed button up shirt, a woolworth jacket, a b/w polka dot coat, a long black cascading dress, and a cat sweater just for shits. When you really look, there are some fabulous and uniquely different finds! I've been to Jet Rag a really good number of times now, and the store itself is decent. Their selections are clearly organized and makes life really easy and a fairly enjoyable experience. A lot of the times, when you're looking for something specific like military uniforms, flapper dresses, lab coats, etc. its usually there; but for odds and ends, $ Sundays is where its at. This is in regards to the Sunday Sale: The other yelp reviews made em think that I needed football gear in order to get anything. In reality, it is busy but no one is going to deck you. Most of the stuff seems more 80's than anything, and there is certainly dirt and damage. If you aren't willing to wash and alter whatever you buy, you aren't really going to find much. There aren't any mirror around, and there is no way to try anything one. Which means if you don't have an eye for your size, you are going to have a hard time. Still, even if you are a little of fin fit for some items, it is all still just a dollar. If you only get half the stuff fitting and looking how you want, you are still getting a great deal. You will definitely have to dig for it though. read more

I've been in town so long, I shopped this place when it used to be down on Melrose... Here's the lowdown on Jet Rag: If you're looking for a deal, come on Sundays. That's when they have the bulk/ $1 sale. Come early and bring one of those rolling granny carts if you're serious. The Sunday sale is great for you up-cycling fashionistas. (By the way, there's now a similar $1 Sunday sale at the hippie vintage place on Lincoln Bl in Venice.) Now, on to the main store. I seldom find much worth considering in the main store, given the prices vs. quality. They do sometimes have a cool sweater or jacket worth a second look, lots of Western stuff, and the super great stuff is generally up on wall for display (or used to be, anyway) - so if you want those, you'll need help from the staff. So, 5 stars for the dollar sale, and maybe 2 for the main store - that makes 3 overall. Just my 2 c's. read more

The best thing about Jet Rag is the $1 sale on Sundays-- you have to sift through piles of polyester and downright ugly getups, but you'll also find a few gems. The only sad part is finding something super cute but with stains or rips in it that can't be fixed-- bummer! I scored two Boho tops and a belt here, $3 total. One guy there called it "church"-- it really should be a once a month shopping excursion for vintage finds. Jet Rag - $1 sale on Sunday at Jet Rag - Used, Vintage & Consignment Near Me - Los Angeles, California

I don't understand why people are saying they're overpriced here, it is supposed to be a vintage shop not a thrift store, there's a difference =/ This is definitely one of the cheapest vintage stores I've been to, I was mostly interested in the dresses and they ranged from about $12-$28 on average. One of my favorite vintage shops in the OC has an average price of $30-60 for dresses, and the really nice vintage stores will cost you hundreds, so Jet Rag's prices are a steal to me. I thought it was cool that they had a whole section just for Halloween costumes, def check this place out if you're in need of one. And their dress selection is MASSIVE! My arms were even tired from digging through all of them. There's tons of clothes just stuffed onto the racks so sometimes it can be hard just flipping through the clothes and putting them back. A lot of the stuff is very generic, plain vintage clothing, but they do have a good handful of the more unique looking items. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything I liked in my size (I'm teeny tiny, short, and size 0-2) but I did walk away with a fancy shmancy rhinestone leather belt. The sheer size of the store leaves me wanting to come again, I'll just need to find out how often they restock to know if it's worth my time. And yes you do need to check in your bag when you go in, there's a sign at the front that says that. The lady let me carry mine around because it was small enough however. Street parking, unless you manage to snag a spot in their ridiculously tiny parking lot like I did (there's about 5 spaces from what I remember, massive, no?). Dollar Sundays make ya holla! I came here yesterday with a gf who swears by this place, and she's one of the trendiest girls I know. SO, needless to say I was excited. I believe it opens at 9AM and we got there around 11:30. There were still a good amount of people shopping, I would say around 20. Immediately we start going through the piles and piles of clothes. I was over it after 45 minutes but honestly they had some cool stuff. Yes, you have to go through a lot to find something you like but it's a dollar, who cares? I just look for fabrics I like rather than going through everything. It's much easier that way. I actually did end up getting a few things. I found the cutest black gypsy looking skirt that I'm really excited about. A couple flannels, a dress, and a long sleeve button down. And my grand total was five dollars. I can dig it. read more

Fucking rips you off. They literally throw your stuff in the bags when you purchase it and sometimes it falls out and they don't keep track of what they pack it. I bought 15 ITEMS. they stuffed a bag that i didn't even see handed it to me and since it was pretty packed they just moved on after I paid. So I left. They only gave me 4 of my 15 items included a bag that I BROUGHT. Its pathetic especially when the manager doesn't do shit to help you with it.. Not worth it. I heart vintage clothing, no let me rephrase that, I have a manic love obsession with vintage clothing lol :) Jet Rag is such a cool vintage shop, so cool in fact that I FEEL cool just walking around in it. Everything inside is so neat and organzied and one gem after another. No crap here fellas! :) Also I hate to admit this, but the clothing/items inside (although VERY worthwhile) are a bit on the pricey side, therefore I am usually opt to visit their... $1 dollar Sunday sale!! Bags are brought out as hungry fashionistas and fashionistos (or just random crazy people) savagely open and grab all the clothing their arms can carry and take it back to their bin and run back for more. Afterward, they all pick one by one what to keep and what to throw back into the pile, usually, if one seems to have a lot of stuff, a little crowd will form by your bin anxiously awaiting any item throw back. Afterwards, the "after piles" may be even more disected with hopes of finding more cool s*, but most likley you will only find a few, that is why everyone gets their early to get the good stuff. Overall, I heart Jet Rag. They can be amazing when I am flourishing cash-wise or when I am in a frugal stage in my life :) read more

$1 Sunday Sales at Jet Rag ~ I am giving Jet Rag a 4 star review for their Sunday $1 Sales. I have lived in the city for over a decade now and used to brave the Sunday dollar sale years ago with girlfriends while dining at Sante La Brea afterwards. I had a little time to kill this past weekend on a Sunday morning and ventured over to see if there were any items worth finding in under 30 minutes of hunting. I came away with a few amazing unique vintage pieces - a crop top made with beautiful metallic material that ties in the back; a little red 80s style light jacket with cute buttons in red (I'm not even going to remove the little shoulder pads like I normally would to preserve the style of this piece); and a pair of amazing print pants that I will wear with a million different tops to create several one-of-a-kind looks. To avoid hassles, bring exact change (or at least smaller bills like $10s and $5s rather than $20s the staff can't always make change for. You can park on the street and expect to spend at least 30 minutes combing through one of the four or five large piles of clothing but giving yourself an hour would probably be safer. I found every size imaginable from skirts and pants with a waist size of 23 or 24 up to the largest sizes. There were a lot of sheets and items with a lot of fabric that would make excellent remnants and raw material for crafters looking for new inspiration. I will be back soon to find more vintage additions for my closet for $1. Look out for stains and holes in items as you search, but don't get discouraged - there are plenty of items in great condition hiding in the piles that are waiting to be given a new home. read more

I had been wanting to visit this place for YEARS. Unfortunately, carless highschool me could not succesfully coax her parents into driving all the way out to Hollywood so I could peruse through some used clothes. I missed out on 6 years of potential clothes-buying heaven. Luckily, I got to venture through Jet Rag for the first time on my 18 birthday. I was on the hunt for the perfect obnoxious vintage dress for my prom; I had visited a fair share of stores already, to no avail. Within no more than 15 minutes of walking into Jet Rag, I found THE dress, no dress could have been more perfect. It fit like a glove, it was still in impeccable condition, and it was very reasonably priced at $38. I did not get to examine the store as thoroughly as I would have liked, but I was pretty impressed with what I did see. They had loads of gowns, old theatre costumes, children's clothing, shoes, bags, accesories, men's clothing, and even shelves filled with old quilts! On Sundays they even host a $1 vintage sale in their parking lot. Even if you don't find clothes that you would wear, the prices are cheap enough and they have so much clothing, that you could easily buy things from here and just use the fabric to create something new! Jet Rag is great, and not overrated like I had been fearing. It is probably one of my favourite shops off Melrose, aside from Slow. read more

After consecutive weekends of Melrose Ave and Rodeo Drive, Jet Rag is a wonderland. Situated two blocks North of the infamous Pink's Hot Dog stand on the corner of Melrose and La Brea, Jet Rag is a two-story warehouse of unorganized vintage clothing and accessories. It is most definitely unorganized and the clothes are smothered on the racks, but that is part of the fun of shopping at Jet Rag... everything seems to be a "find". I perused racks upon racks of dresses while my friend browsed their expansive shoe collection. I always have to try clothing on to see if it fits the way I prefer, and there ar four fitting rooms half a level up near the shoe area. They look a little like barn stalls... not complaining. Just trying to paint a visual. The entire first floor consists of womens' clothing, womens' tops, mens' tops, shoes for boys and girls, bags, jewelry and womens/mens' bottoms. There is also a section behind all the womens' dresses with lingerie and gowns. From what I've seen, everything is under $40 in that region. Upstairs is mostly outerwear and jackets. There are also a few vintage "collectible" items that are marked at a high price (obviously), but it's just cool to see the wide assortment of clothing items Jet Rag has to offer. $17 later I walk away with a gorgeous 50's-style sundress. I haven't experienced the manic $1 Sunday sale (I don't bode well with crowds of people, especially in the mornings..... specifically weekend mornings....), but I do know where I can go to grab a one-of-a-kind outfit for a last-minute event without having to spill $300 on a dress I'm going to wear ONCE. read more

I was telling my roommate about this place (by email) and trying to describe the event... thought my description was cute so I wanted to add it here. Sunday's $1 Parking lot - It's like a game..... They bring out huge bales of clothing. Everyone gathers around ready to pounce on the bale-o-clothes the moment the wires are cut. Than you grab grab grab anything that resembles WOW. Than like a dragon protecting her treasure you bring it your chosen corner, go through it and throw back or trade anything you actually don't want.... It's Fun!!!! No, I have never run into any "attitude" and no one in my experience has been been a jerk in 'the game.' In fact, I've had some memorable funny moments with other game players :) read more

So I love the idea of being efficient and recycling and I understand that the garment industry is one of the most wasteful but I cannot rationalize paying $14 for a stinky old shirt. Yeah, everything is organized and I suppose if you were coming here looking for a tacky outfit for a themed party, this place is perfect. Still, I didn't think any of the pieces I saw were worth the price tag. Oh yeah, be prepared to hand over your purse when you get there. I had to surrender my expensive designer handbag to a sketchy looking dude with a green mohawk... I was considering coming back for the dollar sales but after reading some of the reviews on the types of items they sell, I'd rather hit the strip club or buy some gum. read more

Luckily, I've never dealt with the oft-mentioned rude salespeople, but I'm sure it'll eventually happen as it's par for the vintage-store course (mostly). That said, this place does have a ton of vintage items, but in my opinion, it's a lot of "vintage-for-the-sake-of-it-being-vintage," rather than being stocked full of amazing or even top tier (style, condition,etc) pieces. There are gems to be found, but in my (picky) experience, they are few and far between. Now, I did find an awesome pair of vintage, brown, 1 1/2" cubano heeled men's playboy loafers. $38 down, didn't think twice. A ton of amazing men's vintage boots and shoes but almost always in way-too-small sizes likes 8s and 7s (who wears a 7). On another visit, I found a size 34, violet and black-labeled blazer that you would swear came off of a Commodore! It's a very welcome addition to my birthday attire rotation. Typically men's extra-small and small stuff is sparse in vintage stores, so they earn at least 2 stars for carrying smaller men's coats/jackets. Overall, it's a giant, semi-expensive, vintage store staffed by fashionable folks who work there as a means to end. They are everywhere, this one is just bigger. read more

This place is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OVERPRICED. I literally saw a jacket in there priced at $200 that I got at goodwill for $20. IT WAS THE EXACT SAME JACKET.....i couldn't believe it. All of their items could easily be found at thrift stores. It's clear they are getting their stuff from a cheap vender in bundles and then jacking up the prices to an astronomical rate. So I've been plenty of times before to their Sunday morning $1 sale outside but its been a while. I went to the 24hr fitness down the street this morning and decided that it was about time to go and check Jet Rag out again. Its strange, I don't remember it being so crowded before... Unfortunately today, I didn't feel like really getting down on my knees and digging thru a bunch of random clothes so I pretty much just browsed the piles of clothes on the floor... Which in itself is impossible!!!!! You really need to go here in the right state of mind with determination to find something. LOL. No really... I'm serious. haha. The place is super crowded. Theres probably 1 decent thing in a pile of 100. So good luck and be patient! But it will all be worth it when you find that perfect piece and its only $1!!!!!!! read more

I use to love this store but them taking PURSES is ridiculous, large bags and backpacks I get but purses is just stupid. I use to work as a cashier at a store that took large bags too but NEVER purses. They never use to do that either, unless they were just less strict about it but you guys need to change that rule I'm not leaving my debit cards, cash, etc behind a counter with employees I don't know or leaving them in my car so someone can break into it and steal it???? This place is pretty cool. They have a HUGE selection of ALLL different kinds of vintage clothes. From old school 70 prom dresses to pretty modern looking stuff you can wear on a day to day basis too. Love this place because they have a huge variety of shoes and purses as well and the prices are really reasonable compared to the other thrift stores in the area. I always try to come back here whenever I'm in the area. Parking is pretty easy to find, you can park in the lot in front of the store (which is very small, usually filled, and can only really accommodate a max of 3 cars or so) or on the street right on the side of the building which usually has machines where you can pay with coins for a reasonable price. read more

The store is massive, so if you're intent on finding something from the 60s and later, you probably will find it. If you want real vintage though you have to know your stuff and do some digging, because their hang tags and categories are often wrong. (This can work to your advantage- I found a late 30s dress stuffed in with 80s prom dresses and bought it for $60.) I've been shopping here for years and I end up buying something 9/10 times. It's definitely not one of those beautiful curated vintage stores, it's more like a vintage warehouse, but if you have the time to spend it's definitely worth a visit. read more
