My husband and I did a pick up and go order and one of the male employees who brought the order out was extremely rude as he aggressively swung our groceries and threw them in the backseat. I called customer service to report the incident because what kind of employees are you hiring? I feel Jewel hires a bunch of low vibrational people who display the absolute most disgusting behavior. DA FAMILY JEWELS This grocery giant is well-known in Chicago, but they're slowly pricing themselves out of the market. Now that Da Bears have entered hibernation - their magical football season having come to a bittersweet end - I can sit down and hammer out a few reviews I've been neglecting.  This Jewel Osco is at the northeast corner of Boughton & Weber Rd, next to a Panera Bread and Taco Dale (one of the best Mexican spots in Bolingbrook). Growing up, Jewel was my family's primary grocer -- I never even knew of Meijer or Mariano's existence until much later in life.  20 years on, I've got my own house and family and a budget that prohibits us from doing too much shopping here. The biggest issue I have is that Jewel's prices are higher across the board.  Sure, they carry some nicer specialty items (like champagne or caviar) that you can't find at ALDI, but for the basics like milk, bread, and eggs, there's zero reason to overspend. Dozen eggs @ Meijer = $2, dozen eggs @ Jewel = $5.50. 8ct hot dog buns @ Meijer = $1.59, 8ct hot dog buns @ Jewel = $2.79. A 15pk of Goose Island 312 was $16, and a 12pk of Green Line was also $16.  These were fair prices compared to the rest of the items in the beer fridge, and I'd expect to pay the same across the street. Good selection of domestic & imported brewskis. I had to wait a long time at self-checkout until an employee came by to verify my ID.  It didn't seem like they were fully staffed, and the staff that were working had no sense of urgency.  The aisles are usually well-stocked, however I've been here several times when the endcap displays are empty or nearly so. * TL;DR * Had I not been given an Albertson's gift card from work, I would have no need to shop at Jewel, quite honestly. Meijer has cheaper prices, a faster checkout process, and similar selection of goods.  ALDI has even cheaper prices and blazing-fast checkout, but a limited selection (this tradeoff is A-OK with me).  Don't even get me started on the bullsh*t racket a.k.a. the Monopoly game! What a ploy that thing is! The cost of groceries at Jewel doesn't match up with our bottom line, plain and simple.  I was thrilled to see Green Line in the beer fridge, and that saves them from 2-star ignominy. read more

I am updating my review. My original review will be at the bottom of this. So over time I have had to return my hot chicken twice. The first time it was grossly undercooked. Bloody in the middle. I took it back and they gave me a refund. I went there again the other day to get my chicken. I eat it in the car so I'm not looking at it. I finish up my chicken leg and I happen to look at it and sure enough it was raw in the middle. Not too happy and counted on taking the chicken back the next day. Well about dinner time after I had not had anything else to eat all day I literally run to the bathroom. I spent the next 6 hours running to the bathroom and it was so violent that I camped out in the bedroom so I could be closer. Never been so sick. I take back the chicken the next day and spoke with one of the managers to show him the pictures that I took of obviously undercooked chicken in their display and also showed him the thermometer that I brought in sticking in one of his pieces of chicken that was way under temperature. The chickens were just dumped into the display I assumed because they were still steaming. He said he would file a report with their department. I get a call from Sherry today and she tells me that the store is willing to give me a 25.00 gift card. Wow. I stopped back into the store. My regular store that I have been going to for probably 25 years and I had a talk with the same man and I told him that what he offered was sad and ridiculous and insulting and he said that he never told them that. so I am not happy with the store and the games they seem to play. Not happy with what they feel is okay to sell to people. Especially after this has happened two times. I would really love to see the store turn around and take responsibility for their undercooked chicken. Just looking at the pictures that I've posted you can see the chicken is barely cooked. The skin is still soft yucky and raw looking. It just turns my stomach to look at that. Update. I've called the 800 number for Jewel and "filed a report". They said they were going to have the store manager call me I said I've already spoken to the store manager. I told him that I need a district manager or someone in customer relations and they said they will have someone call me. Never happened. I called back again. I was told someone would call me. Never happened. Since this first happened I've been shopping at a different Jewel. Now since no one feels it's important to return my call. I've discovered Mariano's. I cannot trust this location for unexpired fresh products, it's a health hazard. Food that has developed mold even though the expiration dates are months out, products that stay on shelves that have been expired for years- no exaggeration Ground turkey that had what appeared to be worms all through it. Extremely rude employees at the deli counter- I avoid going now Went through 8 cartons of eggs to try and find one without a broken shell and egg all over my hands. Ended up purchasing the more expensive eggs since the ones for $3.99 seemed to be delivered as a tossing game. waited for fried chicken to be ready for 20 minutes which is fine but this lady handed me a bag of chicken which looked like she was tossing to the front and looking for the old stuff. I said don't give me all the stale chicken which probably should have been tossed when the new was ready. I put the chicken in the refrigerator till dinner. So, I went to Jewel in Bolingbrook, IL to take advantage of the sale for Boneless Beef Chuck Roast. What I expected to see is not what they had. If you take a look online for USDA examples of what it should look like, there will be at least some good ribbons of fat and shaped somewhat oval. What they had displayed (no pre-packaged available at about Noon on 02/23/25), at the meat counter, were sad examples without the 7 parts; looked more like lean meat in the thickness of a boneless roast with sharp ends. Maybe this is permissible, but I've purchased this kind before and it wasn't the best after proper herb style slow cook in a dutch oven pot roast. This looks more like what you can find in a "discount" grocery store. Poorly done Jewel; I expected better. Isn't like the old days anymore. P.S. Jewel company makes it extremely difficult to use their coupons. It is on line and through their app. I needed assistance and asked the clerk to help me. After trying to access the coupon for about 5 minutes he finally gave up and used a code to override the full price. The shopper must also be on guard to make sure each coupon is applied to the item as there is no indication at the checkout. Jewel buy one get one free or at a lesser price are rung up at full price and deducted at the end which is confusing. In addition the regular prices are higher than other stores and when they offer buy one get one the initial price is often raised. NOT a company I enjoy dealing with. read more

The Jewel located at Boughton Rd. & Weber Rd has really gone down the drain, specifically the MEAT Dept. You can expect to pay $18-20 for a beef roast that is just a chunk of fat. The entire roast was crap. No way the butcher did not see that when he cut it. I'm sure he wouldn't have bought that to take home for his family. Basically just throw anything out on the shelf. The meat "used" to be good here, but must have either a new butcher that doesn't give a crap, or worse cheaper supplier for meat. Very disappointing! I use to love this Jewel and do not understand how a store can have been driven so low. Constant storage, understaffed and now the deli has the worst service. I feel sorry for the staff. Feel they are overburdened and frustrated. You have to pay a competitive wage if you want people to work at your store. I tried to stay away from here during the huge remodeling process. So after everything was said and done, I came back. And I felt as if I needed a map to find out where they moved everything to! Lo and behold, I looked at the cart, and it the front part, they had a list of basic items with aisle numbers on them! So it didn't take me long to navigate. They now have a bigger selection of organics (three aisles now as opposed to their previous one half.) and their meat counter, deli, and bakery have doubled in size. (Not that they were tiny before!) And they have four or five long self-checkout counters! Which means we can bag our own groceries in our own bags, without having a clerk look at our bags in distaste, or ogle every item as it comes down the belt. Definite plus! read more

This is one of the areas best Jewel/Osco locations around. I'll give the bullet points: - Deli items are always fresh and the staff is attentive to needs. From time to time, the wings may get low but that's to be understood. Snack trays have a nice variety (though I wish they wouldn't put muenster in cheese trays; some nights they all have muenster. That's the exception and not the rule). Bakery people are also tremendous. - Inventory is mostly on hand. Rain checks are given out with little or no hassle. Other locations will have you wait to "make sure" the item(s) were out of stock. My experience is that this location doesn't believe in wasting anybody's time (yours or theirs). - This place is very easy to navigate. If you can't find something, someone will happily show you where to go. - Meats are very good (especially with them being a major chain). Solid selections and as a rule, always fresh. In the event of something not seeming right, again, they take care of the issue. - The PEOPLE make this place. Often times, many in the front lines (check out , customer service, etc) recognize me by face. I may go here 2-3 times per week. I can't recall ever having any customer service related issues with the staff. Always considerate to customers. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had at Jewel. I was trying to go through the express lane. The lady who was cashiering was extremely rude. I wanted a weight on a bag of apples because it was open. She insisted the it was sold by "each" and not weight. I'm old school. I'm 73. The bag guaranteed a specific weight and I simply wanted it verified. She spoke to me in a very nasty voice insinuating that I was too ignorant to grasp the "each" situation. She refused to acknowledge what I was saying. This was my first time shopping in this Jewel and it will probably be my last. I took my items back, went and got a different bag of apples and went through the regular lane. From now on I'll stick with Meijers. Their employees are polite. If she couldn't weigh the apples and told me that I would have left her line and weighed them myself. She was looking for drama. I will not be treated badly by anyone. I did just call the manager. I have been doing the grocery shopping for my household since the beginning of this Covid period and I have to say that if I continue to do it, it'll be at another store. Every week I pick up the weekly ad and bring it home to my wife and she makes the shopping list I use to go shopping. Every week I find that an item in the ad is OUT OF STOCK! Ad starts on Wednesday and I shop on Thursday. I call BS! From shrimp to cornish rock hens, to hot dogs, and today liver sausage. For the first time I got a rain check but doubt if I will ever use it. The front desk claims it because of Covid or greedy shoppers. Again I call BS! How about you just don't order enough or order it at all! Don't tell me that there are that many liver sausage lovers to completely wipe out two rows of the stuff with nothing in the back. I know because I asked. You can shop at this store if you want but be prepared for disappointment on not only sale items but regular stock items as well. This area is covered so a person could be smoking 50ft away but their cancer laced smoke is just hanging in this covered area. They have all these registers but never have more than one or two people taking cash the express is a joke they only ever have one person there and I swear it's the slowest employee they have. The managers don't ever seem to work I needed help at the customer service desk and a employee called for help as she had a line at her register when the manager walked out after I waited at least 10mins the manager came out and yelled at the girl saying she could have taken care of me herself next time don't call her, what is your job? Beware of the sales. The "Oh, the sale price will display at the end". I was "shorted" on the coffee. All between $6.49 to $4.99 for K-cups. After an adjustment, I ended up having to go back and take pictures of THEIR sale price signs to take to an empty customer service counter. This poor woman is working a lane AND, Jewel's "Customer Service" counter. The item first rings at full price then mysteriously displays the correct sale price. Had I not asked, in both my original transaction AND at the counter, I may have been out of quite a few dollars. Different item same deal with original price. Great selection of organics and craft beer! Great selection of fresh fish and sea food. The store is always clean. There are always enough lanes open to check out! Easy in, easy out. The best part is they do not have people soliciting me in the store like they do at the other competitors stores. Nothing worse than trying to leave the store and someone watching you check out just to try to stop you as you are leaving. Horrible grocery store, newly remodeled but they should have replaced all of management. Checkout lanes are always long and not staffed appropriately. 2 days from Christmas, the lines are extremely long going down the aisles, express line was all the way the way to the bakery and they had 4 checkouts unstaffed. Beware of out of date products throughout the store but primarily dairy and non perishable food. I've complained about this several times to store management but still don't see improvements. I've gone to the extreme of putting the food onto the ground only to come back and see it restocked on the shelf. Do yourself a favor and find groceries elsewhere! read more

I visited Jewel, hoping to order a birthday cake for my baby, but I ended up canceling due to a very rude employee (Bob) that works at their Bake Shop. This employee has a condescending attitude towards the customers. I have bumped into him on two prior occasions, and both times he had an unpleasant attitude. When I had a special request for my baby's birthday cake, he refused to write them down, because I needed to speak with the cake decorator in person. He made me walk back and forth the cake decoration book just to start the ordering process. I mentioned to the manager the only time I can trek my way to Jewel is on Sunday evenings. I honestly can't explain why he had such a poor attitude towards me, but I am discouraged from ever buying from the bake shop. They lost 6 customers. At the end, I told him I was speaking to his manager (who I later discovered it was Mr. Tony Castillo) and with a rotten response Bob stated, "I don't care, go ahead." I don't think he should be working with the public. I think he brings shame to Jewel Grocery Stores. From now on, we plan to order cakes elsewhere. I recently purchased grapes at Jewel. They were red grapes, nice, crisp and sweet. However, in the process of washing them, I noticed that a number of the grapes had what appeared to be bite marks in them. Indeed, upon closer inspection, I could actually see little teeth marks. I used to go to Maple & Rt 53. There was a nasty cashier who embarrassed me. I went to Washington & Ogden. There was a manager who kept saying "God Damn" to her employees and told me to shove it when I privately confronted her. At the Downers Grove Main St & Ogden location three times I found the same employee not washing his hands. The management turned a deaf ear. I then went to Downers Grove Main and 63rd. Three of the cashiers and two of the female managers were very saucy with me and showed no respect. I am giving up on Jewel since the next location is too far. I will go to other grocers. In general I like Jewel, the interior is wonderful and has the atmosphere of a local food market. The store has interesting foods plus the produce is great. The employees have always been helpful and gracious with us. The reason for the three stars -- thIe prices are too high and in bringing in more exotic foods the store has stopped carrying many mundane products or stopped carrying them in a variety of sizes (eg, they only carry Rice Crispies in the smaller size). We have switched to a cheaper grocery story for the mundane things and now only shop at Jewel for items the cheaper grocery store doesn't carry, like chocolate granola bars and Entenman's. read more
