I went to Osco to pick up a prescription. Thought I would shop a little while waiting. There has always been a problem with customer service in the deli department. Today I asked for 1/4 pound of corned beef. The young gal do de doed around. Gets to slicer. You want a half pound? No, a quarter pound. She begins slicing, goes to bag it up. It is .43 pounds. I tell her if is too much. She takes a slice off and goes to bag it up. It is .34 pounds. I tell her it is too much, that that is 1/3 pound. Get ready, here it comes... She told me that 1/4 pound is more than a 1/2 pound. The other employee told her it is not. That 1/4 pound is .25 on the scale. I would have given 1 star. I work overnight and am usually here in the morning on my way home to shop. It's not usually too busy then and shopping is typically pretty easy. I can't recall having any issues with food quality here - they might be out of things now and then but are quick to offer a rain check if I ask. The reason I decided to write this review is due to the staff. The people working here that I've encountered are typically pleasant and helpful. I've shifted more of my shopping here from Mariano's mainly due to the staff here. The deli at Mariano's is usually slower and when I go to the seafood counter there to pick up a seafood salad, staff seems almost intentionally slow as if I might go away if they don't serve me. If there was a lower rating than 1, they would definitely earn that. I went in for a couple of items. The problems started with the rude cashier, Estella, who basically just wanted to scan my items and get rid of us to move on to the next customer maybe? I mentioned that the coffee was ringing up $3.00 more and I couldn't get their digital code to work. Estella basically said, "oh well" the price is $9.99 then. When I questioned how I could get it to work, she took off one of the two coffee's from my bill and told me to go to customer service. Okay. Well, Anthony at Customer Service looked at me like I had 3 eyes. He told me it was my phone that wasn't working and his worked fine. Great, but I can't get it to work. He just stared at me. I said, how about you use your phone then. No response (just staring). He scanned it with his phone and said, it worked fine and came up for him and then continued to just stare at me. In the meantime another customer waiting for customer service scanned my coffee and the wrong brand came up. Hello Anthony, learn your products. I finally asked for a manager. Marie (the manager was even more rude than Anthony and Estella) which I didn't think could be possible. She went to the coffee isle, came back, and said, "I will honor the price" but it is wrong". I said, how is it wrong. Marie wouldn't respond. I had a picture of their sign and she stomped off saying it was wrong and she would fix it. We figured out later, what Marie was rudely trying to say without words is that the store screwed up and marked down Maxwell House versus Folgers. Marie handed us off to Jackie B, who rudely stated. You owe us $4.08. She was just as rude. So after wasting about 30 minutes of our time, trying to get the price quoted on their coffee and dealing with 4 very rude, disrespectful employees, I finally got my coffee. This is the first negative review I have written. If you want to be treated with respect and friendliness, STAY AWAY FROM THIS LOCATION. The store is a hidden Jewel! Pun intended! Th lady who does the balloon decorations makes the store look amazing. Makes me wanna walk up and down the aisles (especially toward the front) for no good reason than just to take in the eye candy. The unbelievable amount of elaborate Feb 14th trimmings convinces you there's NO WAY they can sell all this. But, I've been told that they indeed will sell out. It is a decent store overall. It serves it's purpose which is to supply the immediate neighborhood with groceries in a pinch. The prices are higher than Marianos down the street, but Jewel has turned into basically a convenience store with a pharmacy. The fried chicken is crap. They allow it to sit out for hours and still sell it. If you don't get it fresh out of the fryer, you're likely getting chicken jerky because it's been sitting there so long that it has hardened and lost all moisture under the heat lamps. The deli meat selection is good. The cheese selection is decent. The fresh fruit selection is seriously lacking. If you want to pay more for your groceries or want chicken jerky from what should be moist fried chicken, shop here. Otherwise drive down the street to Mariano's. read more

A one stop grocery store for all your needs. Super clean and has tons of fresh food. The prices are always great too. Great selection of organic food. Sticks almost everything and the wine section is fantastic!! Service was great. Enjoyed my time there!! And bought the wine and fruits! I had good help when I needed it and was able to check out. Flower department has variety of flowers. Bake goods are great. Overall very clean and friendly environment. Their customer service is consistently above and beyond. Almost every single one of the employees in this store are so helpful and kind. If you call and ask anything that you need they'll let you know promptly whether they have it or not. Next thing escalated, I forgot my ID in the car , I sent my daughter to bring it, and she did. Cashier Jackie B check the ID and she told to helper that we don't want to buy wine, she trow the first receipt,she cancelled our purchase and charged me only for Christmas bags???I stayed without any comment, I stepped outside still confused about what happened. Too bad "0" stars is not an option. This jewel location has sold me stale nestle drumsticks ice cream. The cone was not tasty. What a waste of money. I've had other issues at this location. I never buy "fresh" veggies here. Fresh is not something the mgmt at this location believes in. The ice cream box had a best sell date of Sept 2019. It tasted like it expired in 2018. Also, in more than one occasion I've seen that the guys restocking the aisles block the walking area. Move the pallet or shopping carts to the sides!! Easily one of the worst stores I've been in. They have the brilliant idea of having no self service kiosks so you're forced to deal with one of only two open registers with employees who would rather be elsewhere. Bring your reusable bags and a ton of patience because you'll need it. read more

Grocery shopping sucks in general... This Jewel or Jewels as we call them in Chicago doesn't make shopping suck any less or any more! I think all the people in the butcher shop are nice less one guy and I have never had a bad experience in the deli. The food is priced decent... There is fine balance between paying to much and going to 3 grocery stores for food. I believe that you can buy a good percentage of your groceries at Jewel and not feel ripped off. The meats and produce regardless of price have always been adequate. I did once have a problem with some chicken that may have been dated/labeled wrong and they took care of that with no issue or question. I have not had a problem with parking, but I also comprehend that I am going to be walking around in the store so I don't search for the closest spot. Although trying to make a left (go west) onto Lawrence can be tricky if traffic is heavy. Checking out is pretty much terrible... The self checkout people are the grumpiest people in the store. They have to deal with people making mistakes! OMG that must be the worst! It's almost like they have to help customers that are paying money and they don't want to... The young cart pushers are not yet jaded so they always tend to be polite! All in all, its my local grocery store so I will continue to shop here for mere convenience... read more

The only reason I still shop at this jewel is because I use the pharmacy which I think is very good. As far as my grocery experience, this store, in the last 5 years has gone down significantly and I now go to Mariano's knowing that the merchandise I want is in stock. My major beef with this jewel- I brought to the managers attention that I witnessed underaged kids pulling up at the exit (pharmacy side), grabbing cases of beer, and throwing it into a waiting car and driving off. I told him the display in the front needs to be moved to the back where the liquor is stored. He was well aware that this was an issue. After 2 years, the beer is STILL located in the same front display area and the manager I spoke with still works there and has done nothing about this. I witnessed this on one occasion- it was executed professionally as if it had been planned or done before. I am done with this Jewel. It's right on my way home from work, so it's always been ideal for the quick stop on my drive home. But, the last few months have ruined that. The lines are RIDICULOUSLY long every time I stop in. This is at 6:00-6:30pm on weekdays. In the industry, that's "game time" and better grocers prepare for it. This Jewel just doesnt care how many people with 3 items in their hands have to wait. Took 20 mins to get checked out last night. 20 minutes! 0 STARS I cannot, I cannot, I cannot! I have lived in the neighborhood for over 35 years. I have visited this location with both my mother and grandparents regular grocery shopping since I was 5 years old. I make it a point to shop at the Foster/Harlem location for very specific reasons. Every now and then it's just more convenient to stop at your Lawrence and Cumberland location, each time I am reminded of why I do not do my shopping at this location. You walk in and of course get your deli first being that it's what you walk into if entering through the north entrance doors. I always say "I am going to remember these ladies names and let management know how horrible they are"! Don't have their names but I'm assuming you know exactly who they are. They are the worst employees ever to be put in a customer service type atmosphere. Every approach is met with these ladies speaking negatively of management and co-workers. You can walk right up, no other customer around and they will continue with their nonsense for 3-4 minutes before they even acknowledge you. God forbid you ask them to make some wings! The only reason you ask in the first place is because the wing display is of the utmost pathetic display ever. It is apparent that these ladies are not trying to make wings for evening customers and they do not have any qualms with evening shoppers riffling through the 18-20 worst looking wings left over from lunch. On several occasions I approached and asked if some wings could be made only to be given a nasty look, shooting a look to the wing area as if I am a bother and I should be picking from the early day scraps. I swear that this review comes after many, many encounters and has been in the works for years. I don't want to be this person but enough is enough. It's that bad! My aforementioned grievances are merely the tip of the iceberg and hope you get the gist. All wings aside, ordering only deli is of little pleasure as well. These employees do not represent the business well, they completely lack any sense of customer service and they are just downright unpleasant, one could even say nasty. No one wants to feel as if they are interrupting and a bother when spending their hard earned money and just running into the grocery store. I have had to literally say "uh hello, customer here ladies" and have them just look at me and carry on with their nonsense. They even drag the male employee in to the nonsense, it's unreal. After living in the neighborhood for so many years I have many friends and family that have the exact same complaints, with the very same knowledge of how these individuals constantly engage in inappropriate, negative conversation while having no regard for customers. This place isn't the greatest. The parking lot sucks. The variety is good. The aisles are small and the people are pushy.

They were great 3 months ago, what happened? New model store, plenty of new options to buy and all day fresh products. Today the Fresh bread variety are all out and it's 5pm. Come on now, make some bread for the afternoon crowd. The worst part, I really got I to the Jewel monopoly game, got most of the pieces other than the rare ones which are winners. 100 game pieces later still no winners other than winning more game pieces. That not the bad part, it's May 9th and all the stores in the neighborhood are out for a game that ends May 20th. All jewels smell but this one smelled like dirty cat litter. I went to the deli at 8:45 and they close at 9, but they still serve people until then. When I got there, there was 2 people working, but I had to wait for the gentleman to finish his first customer to assist me because the women standing there talking about her "baby daddy" was too busy to help with my one item. I went to check out with my one item and there was 2 registers open pouring into the aisles, with cashiers who seemed miserable. Most people had only a few items but the line wasnt moving. Every single time I come here there are no more than 3 lanes open and every lane is hanging out the end caps. It never fails! I'm not sure it's my luck, or that this store is not appropriately staffed for busy times or what, but it is too often that this happens. I've complained in past about this stores layout and difficulty finding applesauce. I've also had no luck finding spaghettios here too once. I popped in here the other night to buy a gallon of milk and was UNHAPPILY surprised to find most of the check out lines closed and most of the self check out lines not open as well. If you're not going to have employees out there on the registers, at least keep the self check out lanes wide open so customers can get out! The prices here just keep going up and up with hardly any good sales the way it was a few years ago. There are many other competitors in the area who are far more customer oriented with lower prices and better sales.
